Ran a 10k - Official Thread (6 Viewers)

I'm slightly worried about the sprint, I'm not a quick guy.  The rest should be alright.
You know, the swim isn't too bad, but getting your clothes off after the 100 inside 4 minutes could be a challenge.  I can see a boatload of comedy watching that.

Thankfully stripping isn't part of the 4 minutes.  But it is in deep water so the smart move is to hold your breath and just stay under until you're done.

48 hours to go...nervous yet @SFBayDuck?
Not nervous, per se, just anxious.  After all, I'm not actually doing anything on Saturday morning other than sitting in an auditorium watching Gordy, Ann, Twietmeyer, et al pull names out of a big drum.  I am trying to mentally prepare myself for what happens if I end up in the middle of the 50 person wait list.  Since there's never been one, we have no idea how much movement to expect so that limbo would totally suck.

Anyone with absolutely nothing better to do at 8:30 AM Pacific on Saturday, the lottery can be followed at http://www.ultralive.net/lottery or watched live on the WS100 Facebook page.

Then on Sunday it's just a matter of watching the @Hardrock100 Twitter feed, but at 1.2% with my two tickets I have zero expectations there.  Of course I don't think I'm ready for that race anyway, it's more of a 5-10 year plan of trying to work my way up to that and each failed lottery ups my odds for the next one.

You're going?  Awesome!  That would be cool, and I believe gives you one additional chance as they draw one extra entrant from those that are in attendance right?

It's great that they've added the wait list, but getting drawn anywhere from about #15 or below would be the suck.  Pretty challenging to logistically plan for a race (flights, lodging, crew, etc) where you may not find out you're in until weeks or possibly days before the race?  Ugh.  Well I'll be following live online and crossing my fingers that we're numbers 1 and 2 out of the hat.  :ehighfive:   :hifive:

That would be pretty sweet!

I've driven up for the lottery every year (some of my friends think I should pass this year to change my luck), and yes, they historically have given out three spots to those in attendance that don't get picked (looks like 2 this year).  They hand out a playing card to each person as they enter, and put a matching card in a bucket that they pull three from after the lottery.  Last year there was one of the six lottery entrants that was on their 7th year (64 tickets!) that still didn't get picked in the lottery, and so we (the crowd) gave him one of those three spots.

There is also a raffle that they pull five or so names from for entry.  I always buy a few tickets when I get there, and my mom is sending me a check to buy a few more on her.

Well, it is what it is at this point.  I can't sugar coat it and say my ankle made huge improvements, but it's not terrible either.  Coaching a soccer doubleheader last night irritated it - I guess just standing around for 2 hours is enough to bother it, but what can ya do?  It's cool how 10mins in the ice bucket really settles it down though..... but at the end of the day, unless I don't really damage it, its going to come down to pain threshold.

My fitness is around a 3:03, but Goal A is 3:04:59 (7:04) so I can get into the BQ-5 group and totally forget about the cutoff!

Goal B is 3:06:59 (7:08) which will give me a BQ-3 and should be enough to not sweat the cutoff.

Anything slower is an afterthought.  I hate to think a PR (<3:09:02) isn't sufficient, but that's where I'm at.

The margin for error is razor thin, but that's exactly what this is all about for me - its a huge challenge over a distance that has humbled me every.single.damn.time.

You definitely have the fitness to get the job done but be smart. If you are on track for goal A & B grind it out and then worry about that ankle down the road but if not, goal C should be coming out of the race as healthy as possible. Make sure you can tell the difference between pain you can run through and pain that you shouldn't.

I'd be lying if I haven't struggled with this thought a lot.

I have an idea of what I think you should do, but I don't think it'd be appropriate to make the suggestion.  The one thing I will say is that I would make a tangible plan, identifying all if-then's, before going to bed tonight.  You'll sleep better without variables still floating through your head and 2 nights before is the most important night of rest.  Not much you can do to help the race now, all you can do is hurt it.  Trust your training, execute your plan, and listen to your body.

And see you here http://www.capegazette.com/sites/capegazette/files/styles/lede_image/public/2014/12/field/image/male win half.jpg?itok=WpyrN-yd about 10:06 Sunday morning  :boxing:

  It's tomorrow morning, though! :excited:

Stop thinking. Just run now.

(coming from a guy who thinks way too much)
As a high strung guy who OCD's on everything, I've been surprisingly pretty chill (relatively speaking).  I know what I gotta do - just execute and it'll be all good.

It's tomorrow?

grabs phone

Hey, clients...appointments now begin at 10:15 Saturday so your appointment is now 15 minutes later than originally scheduled.  Hopefully I arrive giving a series of fist pumps and chest bumps.

Happy to see this, don't worry about the things you can't control, like if your ankle is going to hold up.  Good luck tomorrow and don't forget to pack your HR monitor.

Best of luck Ned, looking forward to following along and being part of the party in here after you crush it.

So much for taking it easy getting back for me...

Guy in my neighborhood gave me a free entry to a 5K trail race tomorrow morning. Based on last year it could be a pretty weak field though...might be a decent race to cherry pick a "W".

Perfect racing weather!

doesn't it kind of feel like there should be a central location/event where members of this thread can gather for a race and then some serious drunken debauchery?

Ned, my one shred of advice is to sit down, tune into this link, and listen for a couple minutes.  Not the fastest song, nor really what you'd call a pump up song.  But, it's the song I've always played right before a race.  Why?

Because, as the refrain goes - "You already know how this will end."

You've done the training.  You've planned out your race.  You're getting your last nights sleep.  You already know how this will end.  All you have to do is run.

So - go run.
