Ran a 10k - Official Thread (3 Viewers)

Ahhh... went back downtown and ran on the canal...

couple notes:

1) legs got a little tired in the 2nd half of the run but felt a bazillionty times better than they did yesterday.

2) Garmin has some issues while running on the canal, IMO. Overall path tracking is correct so total distance and average pace is good but the "heartbeat" running pace is off, IMO. I was running neither a 13 min/mile pace nor a 4 min/mile pace at any point. Pretty sure the buildings in the area were messing with it a bit.

I think I like the idea of not having anything specific to train for right now and just getting to go out and run for fun and by feel. If I feel good and want to push it, good. If I just want to take an easy stroll, good. At some point will have to think about putting together a plan to train for the monumental but I have some time before that.

Oh yeah... they linked up some photos from the race on Saturday. Timely discussion of body fat %. There's a couple lovely photos of me being sexy after the race with a medal around my neck and no shirt on. It's not a particularly pretty site but pretty sure it's a lot better than what it would have looked like if I would have posed for the same photo after the 1/2 in November!

Gents who’s wearing prescription sunglasses and what’re you wearing?

Last year at 48 I finally needed glasses for distance and now want some Rx sunnies before the summer.

I noticed you ran yesterday after yard work. Post yard work running never goes well for me. Kinda like if I run immediately after lifting. It is a quantity run. A grind. Nothing more.

Just something to chew on...

I've got a pair of prescription Oakley's. I love them. Use them for all things outside... from golf to running to softball to hanging out at the pool.

Might be but my legs were dead all day and I was just doing some light stuff around the yard while also grilling out.

I almost didn't go out but I really wanted to just jog a little to try to loosen up my legs, which did help some.

Biker dudes....

What's your cycling max HR compared to your max HR for running?  I'm a 197 max running, but it seems I'm around 185 riding.  I knew they'd be different, but didn't think it'd be that drastically different.  It doesn't matter much for mtn biking, but curious what you guys are seeing.

I need to go visit Oakley. I’d like a pair for chill and a pair for activities.
be warned, prescription lenses for sunglasses tend to be stupid expensive. I basically have this pair and have had them for 3 or 4 years:

My prescription hasn't changed much so it's all good for me. Frames were basically "free" via eye insurance for me. IIRC, the lenses were probably about what that link has, which is about $300 +/-. That's only single vision lenses but they are top notch in terms of clarity, protection, etc.

They are durable as can be. They've taken quite the beating and still fit the same as when they were new - nice and snug, no movement, etc.

My max (never measured officially just off my HR monitor) running was around 165 (I'm old and fat, keep your judgement to yourself). Biking up the steepest hill I can find around here max's out around 140. That's from an Apple watch so probably not as accurate as the running HR using a strap but close enough. I'm also not ####### nuts like you crazy bastards are when it comes to workouts :D

looking at recent stats 198 running, couple of years ago 202 during a CX race...I don't log my rides any longer, so I don't have recent data.

Mind you, I turn 50 this year and didn't do any specific training during the last 3 years... that may explain some of the discrepancy.  Previous to that I trained by HR zones for 100mile MTB races...

So, an update on where I'm at.  Basically been no running for 5-6 months.  Leg still not 100% but as I mentioned last time the Ortho thinks I have a nerve issue and honestly I'm not sure what has changed since then with me physically but I'm convinced he's right.  My leg now consistently feels weird as I have been going to the chiropractor for a couple of weeks now and after adjusting the leg itself it seems more "off".  I feel better after I'm adjusted but something is just still off - but I do think I'm heading in the right direction.  Here's the good news - even though I know he's not the Ortho I asked the chiropractor based on what he's seen if I should be ok to try and jog some.  He said while it obviously won't help and full running may aggravate things, he doesn't think it will really hurt if I feel up to it.  So, I went out last night and did 3 miles of walking and then mixed in some jogging.  No pain but I was apprehensive to go too "fast" so I was just jogging.  Tried to stretch really well afterwards.  I was a little sore this morning which I'm not sure is from the adjustment or the jogging or both.  I'm cautiously optimistic but still frustrated that this is taking so long and I've really been worried the last few weeks that I'll never get it right.  At the end of the day it wouldn't be a huge deal as I've never been a runner on any consistent basis but the idea that I couldn't run any more is a little disconcerting.

My plan is to keep going to the chiropractor and very, very slowly ramp things up and see where it takes me.

Finally sort of got to use my Garmin on the golf course. Pretty cool stuff, IMO, even though I still have some stuff to figure out on it. I probably should read a little on how to use it at some point to get the most out of it.

Also feeling pretty good again now for the most part... Starting to get pumped for the 5k on Saturday. Goal is sub 22:00. Plan is to try to run the first 2 miles near 7 minutes/mile then give it all I have left in the last 1.1. Best 5k so far was a solo run back in mid March of 22:49. Splits then were 7:17, 7:30, 7:24 with a 6:20 pace for the .1 at the end. Hoping to average 7 min/mile might be wishful thinking but I'm going to give it my best shot.

I'd just cut the leg off.

Sounds like you are on the right track, but if you ever get the vibe that your ortho or chiro is going down the wrong path, don't be afraid to jump ship to another provider.  I've wasted a good chunk of time and money trying to stick a dead end plan from some providers.  While I think my situation was a little more on the unusual case, it has taught me that not all providers are alike and it takes some time to find the right healthcare provider for you and your situation.

A little conflicted about how to approach my 50K on Saturday.  I do know that I won't be running with my buddy.  His pace is going to be a couple of minutes per mile slower than mine, and there's just no way that I can slow down that much without it being really miserable for me.

The course consists of two parts:  a 13-mile out-and-back section on a hilly, somewhat technical trail and then 2 loops on a hilly (but mostly runnable) 9-mile cross country ski trail.  I ran the 13-mile section at 9:36/mile on Saturday, but there were several times that I stopped my watch while I stood and waited for my buddy to catch up, so that's probably not indicative of what I can expect this weekend.  I did (more or less) the 9-mile loop last week on relatively fresh legs at 7:54/mile, but there's no way in hell I'll be going that fast on either of the two loops on Saturday.

My 50K PR is 4:54 from way back in October 2012.  Sub-4:30 sounds like a good goal, but that's really aggressive.  Top-ten last year meant going 4:46:21, so maybe that's more realistic.  Anyway, no clue in hell how to pace this thing.  Any suggestions from our resident ultrarunners?  @SFBayDuck@BassNBrew@Zasada?
4:45 and consider that a PR win

Last 2 SOS workouts in the books and I’m ready to taper in with easy runs for the next week or so. Volume will come down but frequency will stay. Really pleased with this cycle that started off pretty iffy with some nagging stuff and has progressed nicely into some new territory.  Hanson HM plan has me feeling ready and also has been a great fitness springboard into the summer.

I got what I wanted and a little more out of tired legs this week and my workouts were solid throughout. I think I like the taper more than anyone, I’m excited to sleep a bit more.

Arrive the following Saturday afternoon (5/18).  Will be pretty free during the day on Sunday and Monday and likely Tuesday morning.  Staying near Copley Square.
Im not in the city on the weekend, but I can swing Monday 5/20 or Tuesday 5/21.  I believe thats my rest week, so you will need to be kind to me :) .  Shall we see how the weather is and call it from there?  Lots of attractive running along the Charles headed west from there.

Wife wants us to sign up for a traveling "Beer Garden 5K Series" that a local race management company is putting on this summer.  There are eight races in the series, but I know already that three of the dates won't work.  But still, FIVE 5K races?   :scared:
