Ran a 10k - Official Thread (12 Viewers)

Thank you, good people.  I don't like running, I do, however, enjoy this thread and seeing everyone's success.

July 1 I start Hanson for NYC.

While we're feeling all warm and fuzzy this morning, take a minute to listen to "Keeping Score" by Dan + Shay.  It shuffled on during my run this morning, and even if you're not a fan of country music, it's another good reminder of what's important...

So, @JShare87, any point in wearing the VaporFlys tomorrow when over 60% of the race is on a crushed limestone bike trail?
I would not.  I saw someone post how their VF got destroyed on a crushed stone course.

i wore my VF at Boston and they got beat up pretty good.  Can’t imagine what crushed stone would have done

Didn’t you run this course last week? As long as the ground is fairly hard and not uneven, I think they would be fine. During my first marathon, many of the runners had the first Vaporflys. I think that course was crushed limestone as well. I try and wear them any chance I can get.

Whoever it was in here that linked those Saucony Kinvara 8's earlier this year, for half price no less, THANK YOU!  Love 'em.

I no longer use my New Balance, too big and bulky.  In fact, I am tempted to take them back because I'm convinced the guy misguided me on size.  Because I also purchased orthodox, he convinced me to go a size bigger, which I never really got used to.  I almost want to go back in and see what they'll do about it.  Or should I?

Wrapped up my trip to Nashville today - decided to get up and hit a local trail to get some miles in before driving home.  I used the AllTrails app and found a 7 mile trail that was all in the woods and an actual trail and not paved.  Crazy back and forth - was one of the weirdest trails I’ve ever been on.  At a couple of points it even crossed itself so it was a little confusing but I managed to stay on course and not get lost.  It ended up have some decent elevation and was just under 7 miles.

Almost 60 miles in the last 4 weeks - and my leg is still feeling pretty good.  Still going slow but a little worried it’s too many miles.  Going to take a few days off.

A cadence higher than the road runner probably played a role ;)
My cadence has been whacked.

Its time for me to start getting serious.  I am racing tomorrow (a small 5k where i came in 5th last year. I was 47 and everyone else in the top 8 were between the ages of 16 and 21.).

Im going to start piling on the miles.

Did my business.  A bit warmer than i would like with it being in the mid 60’s.  Heading out to the course.  Expect to have it posted to strava shortly after 10.  Guessing i run 20:30 today.  A full minute slower than last year.....ugh

My poop this morning was as much of a workout as my actual workout. Happy early Fathers Day gents. May get my butt out there tonight to see how things are doing. Knee has been kind of jacked up for a while. You’d think I would remember to wear a knee brace at the gym, but alas no which is why my knee never seems to get much better. I’ll learn one of these days.

Say, @Zasada, the discussion of pushups got me thinking: Do you do planks at all?  Given your long frame, I would think planks could be beneficial ..both regular planks and side planks.

And @gianmarco, a fall relay doesn't work out for me, given work stuff, a couple other race commitments, and the marathon training.

My update — i ran a tiny trail 5k yesterday and finished 2nd out of 40ish.

ill do a RR early next week
NYSACAC 5K

This run is coordinated through a professional conference that I attended.  It was located on a university campus.  The night prior, I had been up late and imbibed on many adult beverages.  I did get up early and get an easy 4 mile run done to work out the cobwebs.

The race was actually in the afternoon.  I wasn’t feeling 100% but I got out and did a one mile warmup.

I arrive at the race start and find out this year it will be done on a muddy, wet cross country course.  I haven’t run trails since last year so I was going to have to adjust a bit.  Its small race (only 40 people).  I surveyed the crowd and there was one guy (I’ll call him “fast guy”) who looked like a runner.

We get ready to start and no one wants to be up at the start line.  Eventually myself and a few others hop up.  And we are off.

The course is essentially a 2 big loop and 1 medium loop course.  The first 200 yards are across a field of grass before we head into the trails.  Quickly, there is a group of four of us (3 guys and a woman) who enter the trails.  We were 2x2 heading in and I was one of the ones in the front but I quickly realized I wanted to be in the back.  I didn’t want to set the pace and I was going to let others figure out the footing.  The course was very muddy and lots of standing water.  We did a lot of jumping and weaving to avoid the mud.  There was one case where it was complete mud for 15 feet so we almost had to walk or slowly run it due to sliding.  In addition, lots of roots we had to avoid.

In our group of four, was fast guy (guessing around 30 years old), big lumbering guy (30 years old), woman who didn’t have the look of the fast runner (probably 25 years old) and me (48 years old).  We had a nice camaraderie, but interested that I was suddenly racing them and not just my time.  We completed the first big lap and I was laboring more than I would like.  The others seemed to be doing okay.

Loop 2 began (around 1.2 mile mark) and we head back into the woods again.  We are starting to spread out with fast guy and the woman extending a lead of about 20 feet, then lumbering guy….then another 10 feet and then me.  I was trying to pace myself and be careful not to totally burn out.  Near the end of the second lap, there was a 20-30 second uphill and I made my move and quickly passed lumbering guy.  He was breathing hard and I think had hit his limit.

The final smaller loop started with a different stretch on the grass again.  I could see where the wet parts were based on where fast guy and the woman were running.  I was able to adjust a bit to stay on drier ground.  I was pushing more here as I started to reel them in.  I got even with them (fast guy probably was about 5 feet in front of the woman).  I passed the woman and tried to put together a kick as we approach the woods (but a different section).  As we approach the woods, fast guy shifts to another gear.  I had no response.  I had used much of my energy to get to that point.  Admittedly, I was back on the unfamiliar trails and didn’t want to twist an ankle for this tiny race.

I finished strong and 20 seconds behind fast guy.  The woman came in third and she was 25 seconds behind me.

It measured short for me.

Mile 1 – 7:50 pace

Mile 2 – 7:38 pace

Mile 3 – 7:26 pace (total time 7:14)

2.97 miles.  Time was 22:42.

Overall 2/40

No age groups but I was definitely #1 of the old guys.

Rogers Run 5K

This is a local 5K that is about a mile from my house.  I’m familiar with the rolling hills of this out and back race.  Its small (probably around 125 people) and not very competitive runners.

Last year, I ran 19:31 and finished in 5th place.  I thought 20:30 was more likely this year.

Temps were in the mid 60’s.  Morning routine was simple and I was able to get a 2.5 mile warmup done.

The front row of the starting line was a bunch of kids.  I settled into the 2nd row.  And we were off!

I didn’t really have a plan other than to find a pace that I felt was sustainable.  Half a mile into the race I was in 12th place and I passed my older son.  I kept picking people off through the first 1.5 miles.  At the turnaround, I was in fourth place.  The leader was way ahead (ran 17:58).  I was closer to the second and third place guys.  I closed the gap a bit on them as I kept my pace, but I never really had a chance to beat them.

In looking back, I was pleased at the consistency of my pacing.

Mile 1 – 6:34

Mile 2 – 6:35

Mile 3 – 6:33

Last 0.1 – 6:18 pace

20:03 time

4th overall out of 125ish

1st overall in the 40-49 age group (I’m 48 years old).  Second place guy was a couple minutes behind me.

I don't do anything except run right now.

Plan to incorporate some strength training next month after my race.  Planks sound like a great idea!

I’ve done a crappy job at telling you how much I like the K10s. Best of the recent 3 Kinvaras for me by a lot.  9s are ok but preferred the 8s to them

10 > 8 > 9
Interesting. I love the 9's much more than the 8's.

I haven't even looked into the 10s because of that.

Until the Hoka Carbon came out I was planning on using the K10...would still use them for anything less than a half.

Comfortable fast shoe... hasn’t lasted very long for me. YMMV.

A rainy afternoon in Chicago, but as I opened a surprise Amazon package, it got rather misty inside as well.  You guys are the best.  I'm humbled and blessed.

Signed,

Methuselah

I got my local sprint tomorrow 8am EST- supposedly they have real time tracking here:  https://my3.raceresult.com/127699/results?lang=en

I’ve run like once in past month. Lots of riding and some swimming. This was an A race last year. It’s a C race tomorrow.

The fun part will be weather calling for pouring rain.  I’ve never raced in rain. Sounds like fun.

My goals are to run hard and feel out the hip flexor and PR on the bike leg. With the shoulder nerve thing still around I haven’t been pushing the swimming.  The shortish run I did on Thursday was ok, only sore some the next day.  If the flexor crumbles tomorrow, my first marathon in August will be brutal.

Back in KC.

Got a lot of catching up in here. Whoever is racing tomorrow - kick some #BMF ###.

Whoever raced today or last week, way to kick some #BMF ###.  :headbang:

Have a couple of great fishing stories, one of which involved poop. Will try and post tomorrow. I ran once and don't much care. Family got all my time. It was awesome.

Who doesn’t love a poop story?  Especially while sitting on the ivory throne for his race morning constitutional.

At absolute worst, this will be an experience/race you'll remember.  Embrace the suck and take advantage of your competitors' suffering!  Good luck!

2019 All-American 5K Race Report

Pretty disappointing morning, not much to really say.  Just figured I'd get this done.

I wasn't expecting a ton but I did think I would be able to at least get a PR this morning and get in under 23 minutes.  Slept fantastic last night, up and did the business faster and easier than I can remember since probably being 12 years old.  Quick neurostim, then some beet juice, some coffee, some yogurt with honey and jelly.  Gatorade on the way.  Out the door at 6:25am, arrived at the finish line at 6:40, took the shuttle to the start line, arrived by 7am.  1.5 mile jog with my wife to warm up and back at the start line with about 10-15 minutes until start.  Perfect all the way around.  Only bad part was the 71 degree dew point.  I was completely soaked after just the slow warm up.  Still, there was a little drizzle and it was 10 degrees cooler than last year ("only" 74), so there was that.

I really wanted my wife to do well, had her read some of the 5K stuff and watch some of that video that @bushdocda posted.  She ran it in 23:53 last year (7:41 pace) and I know she had more in her.  She's been putting in 30 mile weeks over the last 3 months and was wondering if it would pay off.  I was hoping she'd start at around 7:30 pace and then go from there.

Mile 1 -- 7:18 pace (HR 145)

I think that HR was a little lower than it actually was.  However, I started nice and steady and kept it under control.  This first mile felt really good.  It's also mostly downhill.  After the first 3/10ths of a mile, I look to my left and there's my wife.  I didn't realize she was keeping up with me.  I was thrilled because she looked good.  Her best races so far are the ones where I push her and this was no different.

Mile 2 -- 8:19 (HR 180)

I was feeling fine for the first few tenths of a mile.  Next thing I know, I look down and my pace is in the 8's and my HR is almost 190.  It came out of nowhere between the 1.3 and 1.4 mile mark.  I didn't feel right.  Thing is, I could have kept going but I also knew I had no chance of holding up the pace I needed for the full 5K.  So I just quit.  First time I've done that voluntarily in a race. It just wasn't going to happen and I had no interest in continuing to suffer.  My average HR remained at 180 despite stopping to walk twice in that 2nd mile.

Mile 3.1-- 8:33 (HR 176)

Ran the first half of this mile until we hit the uphill.  Walked a couple more times.  Then I saw someone I know start to pass and decided to run with him and help him finish strong.  I was feeling much better by this point and figured it was the least I could do to finish.  Paced and pushed him to the end.  My HR spiked once again to almost 190 even with that.

Final -- 25:05 (8:05)

My worst 5K ever.  Frustrating morning.  Just wasn't my day but I'm ok with it.  My wife finished 23:05 (7:25 pace) with a nice PR.  4th in her AG.  So proud of her and she says she raced smart.

Anyway, Happy Father's Day to all you Dads here and sorry I couldn't be a BMF today.  Everyone else this weekend more than made up for it.  I'll do my part next time.....

Man, that sucks to hear.  I wouldn’t put much stock into it other than it just wasn’t your day.  Sounds like the humidity didn’t play in your favor and may have had a significant impact, but you just never know if there was also an underlying reason for the huge spike in HR at mile 1.3 (hydration, underlying illness, etc).  And once that happens in a 5K, it’s not coming back.  Well don’t let it ruin your day, and get back after it so we can read about the positive vibes after your next 5K.
