My update — i ran a tiny trail 5k yesterday and finished 2nd out of 40ish.
ill do a RR early next week
NYSACAC 5K
This run is coordinated through a professional conference that I attended. It was located on a university campus. The night prior, I had been up late and imbibed on many adult beverages. I did get up early and get an easy 4 mile run done to work out the cobwebs.
The race was actually in the afternoon. I wasn’t feeling 100% but I got out and did a one mile warmup.
I arrive at the race start and find out this year it will be done on a muddy, wet cross country course. I haven’t run trails since last year so I was going to have to adjust a bit. Its small race (only 40 people). I surveyed the crowd and there was one guy (I’ll call him “fast guy”) who looked like a runner.
We get ready to start and no one wants to be up at the start line. Eventually myself and a few others hop up. And we are off.
The course is essentially a 2 big loop and 1 medium loop course. The first 200 yards are across a field of grass before we head into the trails. Quickly, there is a group of four of us (3 guys and a woman) who enter the trails. We were 2x2 heading in and I was one of the ones in the front but I quickly realized I wanted to be in the back. I didn’t want to set the pace and I was going to let others figure out the footing. The course was very muddy and lots of standing water. We did a lot of jumping and weaving to avoid the mud. There was one case where it was complete mud for 15 feet so we almost had to walk or slowly run it due to sliding. In addition, lots of roots we had to avoid.
In our group of four, was fast guy (guessing around 30 years old), big lumbering guy (30 years old), woman who didn’t have the look of the fast runner (probably 25 years old) and me (48 years old). We had a nice camaraderie, but interested that I was suddenly racing them and not just my time. We completed the first big lap and I was laboring more than I would like. The others seemed to be doing okay.
Loop 2 began (around 1.2 mile mark) and we head back into the woods again. We are starting to spread out with fast guy and the woman extending a lead of about 20 feet, then lumbering guy….then another 10 feet and then me. I was trying to pace myself and be careful not to totally burn out. Near the end of the second lap, there was a 20-30 second uphill and I made my move and quickly passed lumbering guy. He was breathing hard and I think had hit his limit.
The final smaller loop started with a different stretch on the grass again. I could see where the wet parts were based on where fast guy and the woman were running. I was able to adjust a bit to stay on drier ground. I was pushing more here as I started to reel them in. I got even with them (fast guy probably was about 5 feet in front of the woman). I passed the woman and tried to put together a kick as we approach the woods (but a different section). As we approach the woods, fast guy shifts to another gear. I had no response. I had used much of my energy to get to that point. Admittedly, I was back on the unfamiliar trails and didn’t want to twist an ankle for this tiny race.
I finished strong and 20 seconds behind fast guy. The woman came in third and she was 25 seconds behind me.
It measured short for me.
Mile 1 – 7:50 pace
Mile 2 – 7:38 pace
Mile 3 – 7:26 pace (total time 7:14)
2.97 miles. Time was 22:42.
Overall 2/40
No age groups but I was definitely #1 of the old guys.
