Ran a 10k - Official Thread (3 Viewers)

T-minus 42 hours to takeoff.  Superior 100 starts Friday morning.  Coming off my best month of training and relatively healthy as Friday nears.  Just trying not to have a huge stress/anxiety energy dump this week (but failing miserably), as life is out of control bonkers with the kid starting school, work requirements, and this race.  If anyone gets bored on Friday/Saturday, feel free to follow along with live tracking here.

Previous times at this one were 27:22 in 2016 and 27:04 last year.  I'm not "trained" well, but I'm fit.  If I'm being honest, I'm going to be extremely disappointed if I don't hit 26:XX, and mid 26 or faster would be ideal.  But I guess ultimate goal is to get 8 tickets into the Western States bucket, and I've got 38 hours ( :X ) to do that.  Weather looks near ideal with temps currently forecast between 48-65 degrees with a very low chance of rain (though rain is forecast tomorrow so the course may be wet).  

Aid Station Splits in 2018:

  1.  01:25 - Split Rock (Mi 9.7)       
  2.  03:44 - Beaver Bay (20.1)   
  3.  04:53 - Silver Bay (25.0)       
  4.  07:41 - Tettegouche (34.9)
  5.  10:05 - County Rd 6 (43.5)
  6.  12:03 - Finland (51.2)
  7.  14:20 - Sonju Lake (58.7)
  8.  15:32 - Crosby Manitou (62.9)
  9.  18:16 - Sugarloaf (72.3)
  10.  19:55 - Cramer Road (77.9)
  11.  22:02 - Temperance (85.0)
  12.  23:32 - Sawbill (90.7)
  13.  24:55 - Oberg Mtn (96.2)
  14.  27:04 - Finish  (103.3)      
With temps looking favorable, the key may be how well I get through the Beaver Bay to County Road 6 stretch between miles 20 to 44.  It's got some pretty decent climbs and typically they're right in the mid day heat with some exposed ridgeline running.  Last year I struggled badly and spent almost 25 minutes in the Silver Bay aid station at Mile 25.  In order to hit my goal, I think I'm going to need to get into the halfway point at Finland having shaved some time off of last year's 12:03.  From there I'll be heading into the night pacerless for the first time ever, and that's where the mental battle will begin to keep pushing hard.  Pretty sure my wife will be bringing me home from Oberg to the Finish, so that will serve as motivation through the night.  I'll also be motivated immensely by all the glory that will undoubtedly be heaped upon me from my internet running friends following my mid-pack finish.  :lmao:

Since I'm not running Wasatch, I'll be following along!  If you're moving well during the night, not having a pacer really won't matter.  If you do hit a low spot, then team up with another runner, use music, spend an extra couple of minutes in the aid station.  And don't forget the basics when you're tired - hydrate, eat (set your watch to remind you if you need it), and take care of small problems before they become big ones.

I did get out, but ended up at 16 miles due to a very @Zasada  type of run that cut into my time.  I took care of business (big time) before leaving, but still ended up with two serious death crawls over the first half of the run.  Barely made it both times.  Fortunately, I kept the run to a bunch of local weaving with porta-potties never too far away.

Good Luck Say What.  And top 20 in an event of this size is not MOP.  For those not familiar, Say What is a legit ultra runner.

Thanks BnB, but “legit” ultra runner I am not.   “Grinder” would be far more accurate.  😉  

Along the lines of placing though, if I manage to hit my time goal I’m fully anticipating to place worse than last year, maybe 30ish or later.  Field is getting faster each year with actual legit ultra runners, and the temps are looking near perfect.  One day to go!

Love it.  Thank you kind sir!  These are all things I will be sure to keep in mind.  I’ve probably mentioned before that I listen to music/podcasts on 100% of my solo training runs but have yet to listen to a single minute during any race.   :unsure:   That said, I’ve got my headphones ready for the Finland aid station at the midway point as I head into the night.  Thinking some tunes or a podcast might be beneficial at some point to keep me company.  That, or a hot lady runner.  But thinking tunes are more likely.

12 hours until kickoff, but plenty to keep me busy in the meantime.  Tons to do at work, then hard treadmill workout this afternoon featuring 6 x 1/2-mile, 6 x 1/4-mile, and 6 x 1/8-mile.

I'll be watching. When my oldest son was younger, the Chiefs were terrible. 

So he asked who he could root for. So I said: Well, since we have family in Wisconsin and they are in the NFC, how about the Packers? 

They won the Super Bowl that year. He's been a Packers fan since. So we'll be rooting for the Packers tonight. 

 
Headed over to Kennesaw Mtn. on my way home from work.  Went up and down the mountain 3 times - total of 4 miles and then used the walk back down as a cool down.  So, 2.4 miles up and 1.6 miles down in the 4 and its 500 ft. of elevation up on the route I took.  1,500 feet total in the 2.4 miles.  I was dead at the end.

Heat was brutal yesterday in Atlanta.  I think I got a little dehydrated as I was feeling a little off walking back down (had planned to run back down but knew that wasn’t happening).  I know I’m always saying I don’t mind the heat but I’m ready for the permanent cooldown.

@SayWhat? are you on Strava?  My notebook is nonexistent and I don't see your handle listed in the FBG group.

@AAABatteries, I'm headed for ATL next week for work.  Hoping to get some early morning runs in before meetings & dinners.  I'm staying near the airport and in the past haven't been able to find anywhere decent to run in that area (so I treadmilled it).  With Wednesdays being my 20K day, I don't think I can stomach the treadmill for that long.  Any secret running routes in that area or something nearby you would suggest?  It's very likely I'll be running in the dark or very near sunrise so I should avoid any dodgy neighbourhoods.

Not 5 minutes after I type this, my trip to ATL gets canceled.  Nevermind!

You may be a legit ultra runner if...

You're sniffing a top 10% finish.

You finish races before the elite's return flights have touched down.

You haven't seen an aid station in the process of being torn down.

You don't mention cutoffs in you're pacing plan.

La di da I'm not even going to mention the event I'm doing has more than 21,000 ft of elevation gain.

You do worse than last year and only finish 30th.

Yeah, I'm not buying what you're selling.  Hugely impressed with what you've accomplished in the past.  Good luck tomorrow, I hope you crush it.

HFS I didn't even notice this part.  I set a PR for single-day elevation last weekend and was patting myself on the back.  But it wasn't even half of this.  Not even close to half.

Can I drop my TE now and pick up a new one?  He is listed as OUT tonight so I don't have a TE.  Not sure the rules.  If I am able to, I'd like to drop Burton and pick up Jimmy Graham.  (Graham may not be able to be picked due to waivers?....if so, then I'd like to pick up Will Dissly.)

Thanks guys.  On the bus about to head out from the finish to the start.  Going to bribe the bus driver to drive me back the other way past all the aid stations so that I don’t have to run this thing.   :thumbup:

Leader went out at a 7:30 pace.  He has put 9 min into the second place pack already.

Something weird is going on.  The 1:29 times are posted and no Say What.  Also only 19 people through.  

 
Second place runner got in at 1:19 and said #### this, I'm done for the day.  DNF.  Only explanation I can come up with is that he was running fast to hit the crapper and came up short.
