Ive been gone like a month so Im catching up on reading. However, the 8 minutes of my life I spent here were glorious
In addition, Canada is pretty cool.
I can't even imagine running your first marathon after what you did on the swim and bike. Total BMF. Nice work. Glad that you're considering one in the future.Honestly, I wanted nothing to do with the finisher area. I wanted out and never to see anything Ironman again. I was in a special place. I wanted to sell my bike, I wanted to rip off my clothes, and swore I would never compete in an Ironman again.
I’ll take the contrarian viewpoint. 4 is well with your reach. You loaded the horses in the barn with the early long runs. Brush up the fitness the next couple of weeks then get rested to kick ###. Your 20 in the heat will be harder than the 26For the record, I totally know that all is said for my benefit and I really do appreciate the words of warning and all the support in the many forms it comes in. Trust me, I have a very health dose of fear of what is coming. But I think there is something to having a "positive outlook". I go back and forth almost daily in terms of how much I believe I can meet my goals - including just finishing the damn thing!
So, thanks for yesterday, today, and tomorrow and please feel free to tell me when I am being an idiot. I know the time away to play wasn't particularly wise. We will see how all of this goes. I have no expectation that this will be "easy".
@The Iguana - take this with a grain of salt. @BassNBrew is basically the patron saint of undertraining.I’ll take the contrarian viewpoint. 4 is well with your reach. Great report - complete with radio review, lodging, transition nuggets I never imagined, insane BMFage and so much heart on the race, in training and in the write up.Starting the race like 70f and rolling up to like 80ish
It's well documented how much he loves the heat. I think it contributed to the late day struggles, but those are his wheel house conditions. For some crazy reason.Great report - complete with radio review, lodging, transition nuggets I never imagined, insane BMFage and so much heart on the race, in training and in the write up.
To the quoted, holy crap that’s hot. I know kona is off the charts hot so IM people man grade differently but #### that is a hot race day.
never underestimate the power of a race bib and lots of carrots to catch.13.1 last night. Pushed hard to break 2:30 and pulled it off by about a minute. Wish I could attribute it to better fitness but it was 78 degrees instead of low 90s
Back and hip still barking every step so that may be a factor.
Not sure how I’m going to shave off 10 min on Sunday. Hopefully race adrenaline
No cute acronym for this.parents in tow.Surviving the 5 hours of incessant backseat driving will be an endurance challenge in and of itself...
my ankle is NFG.... if I don't run on the literal crown of the road every step is stabby. How are things going with you @TripleThreat? Noticed you haven't been logging more than a mile at a time lately.
Rev fast; Don't bark at parents (RF; DBAP)9-mile run this morning, and what should've felt like "la di da" pace was a grind pretty much the entire time. Thank God tomorrow is a rest day...at least running-wise. I'm driving to Minneapolis for my sister's wedding on Saturday....parents in tow.Surviving the 5 hours of incessant backseat driving will be an endurance challenge in and of itself...
You can do it. Just don't eat any salads, apples, or roughage of any kind between now and Saturday.I ran 5.5 this morning and looking to do 10 on Saturday. This will be my longest run, so we will see how it goes.
Apples? You can do it. Just don't eat any salads, apples, or roughage of any kind between now and Saturday.
Bit the bullet, gave up my day off to get out of the office earlier each day and actually see the sun. I should be able to get 1-2 hours of daylight most days this way.Although I might change the schedule soon so I work 7-330 each day instead of the current 8-530 (with every other Monday off)
No kidding.GREAT report, @JAA !! And congrats again on a monumental achievement.![]()
Gels every 37 minutes? That's ...precise.![]()
Try some Biofreeze on the shoulder and maybe the knee. That stuff is great.
What does this mean?Rolled snake eyes in the Umstead100 lottery.
Ugh. Another reason I'll never again run a fall marathon.I know it's still a week away, but right now the forecast (upper 60s to lower 70s and humid) is NOT looking conducive to racing the Chicago Half Marathon next weekend. Gonna keep an eye on it, but I'm not super inclined to spend $135 race fee plus hotel, gas, etc., to struggle in the heat and humidity.
At least it's just a tune-up race and not my goal marathon. That's why I'm running Indy on November 9. Very low chance of it being too hot to race.Ugh. Another reason I'll never again run a fall marathon.
@BassNBrew being @BassNBrew, it could mean he didn't get in and have the chance to compete ...or it could mean he did get in and has to find a way to train and compete! What does this mean?
Yeah... always a chance it would be too cold for some of us. not very likely to be hot.At least it's just a tune-up race and not my goal marathon. That's why I'm running Indy on November 9. Very low chance of it being too hot to race.
It's the former. I'm on the outside looking in this year.@BassNBrew being @BassNBrew, it could mean he didn't get in and have the chance to compete ...or it could mean he did get in and has to find a way to train and compete! What does this mean?
Sounds like a good plan. I might take that approach, too. It's the former. I'm on the outside looking in this year.
Maybe I'll just stick to races that have beer at the aid stations.

Yeah...between reading @JAA account and having to swim over an hour, I'd say I'm at 2 or 3 on the JAA BMF scale. I hurt after reading his account of that event.@JAA - great write up! Congrats on the accomplishment.
I think i have decided I don’t have enough BMF in me to do an Ironman.
If you're a 2 or 3 on the JAA BMF scale, then I don't think I can properly lift the scale to even view it.Yeah...between reading @JAA account and having to swim over an hour, I'd say I'm at 2 or 3 on the JAA BMF scale. I hurt after reading his account of that event.
For those of you who haven't biked 100 miles of holy terrain, IMO the worst part is the leg fatigue, it's all the pains from just sitting on the bike for that long. Often you butts and shoulders/arms will be screaming at you enough to make you forget that your quads and calves and wanting to cramp.
Pretty sure a friend of mine got into that.BassNBrew said:Or pivot to this https://www.hellbender100.com![]()
I'm just about ready to sign my charitable donation for the season.Maybe if we were playing XFL fantasy...
