Ran a 10k - Official Thread (11 Viewers)

Tried like a SOB but failed to make my goal race weight of 215.  Weighed in at 218.2 this morning.  Still should be an improvement as I was in the upper 230s for the Black Mountain and Biltmore Marathons and lower 230s for Umstead 100 and finally upper 220s for Burning River 100.  Been eating clean and around 1500-1800 cal a day for weeks.  Hardly even know what a beer tastes like.  Went with more of a marathon training approach and relying on the 88 at Burning River 10 weeks ago sufficing for a long run.  Did one 24 miler mostly downhill to build the quads plus leg work in the gym most of September.  Outside of that it's been mostly 9-13 mile runs several times a week.  Diligent on the rolling, yoga, and stretching.  Feeling good about getting this done.

Btw, here's her running over the last year

As you can see, lots of inconsistency due to work/travel for most of the year.  Since the end of June, none of those weeks is under 25 miles and most of them are easily over 30.  She's never been this consistent for this long.  Her HR has plummeted from when she first started.  We used to have about the same HR when we ran.  She's now consistently 5-10 bpm lower than mine.

So I'm REALLY hoping this pays off for her.

Oh, and weight this morning less than one week home after a 10 day vacation with good eating:  194.  Right where I left off.

NOW THAT I'm enthusiastic about, #####es.

That's still some awesome work, especially with the stiff competition you had in Oats.

Good luck, GB.  Get some nutrition in and kill this thing.

So after spending time looking I think I found a race to do and I had no clue it existed - https://runsignup.com/Race/GA/Cartersville/RedTopAdventureRun

Adventure Run that is half of my normal route and my favorite trail I run.  It's almost fate I guess.  There's a 10k and 25k but I know I'm not ready for the 25k and the 10k is what I wanted so once I coordinate schedules with the wife I'm hoping to sign up.  What will be nice is I'm already familiar with the course and I can go run it a few times before the race.
Don't forget to log it in our race calendar!  Good luck!

Just saw on the calendar that you are doing the Indiana 100. Wish it was a little closer to me or that we didn't have plans this weekend or I'd try come by and cheer you on for a while... Had a friend do that one a couple years ago - they had some terrible rains that year and some course flooding so they had to alter the event, IIRC. This year should be about perfect. Temps even drop here from like highs of upper 70s/lower 80s on WTF to highs of mid 50s on Saturday and Sunday.

Also this. I haven't talked about it much, but her HM is coming up in 2 weeks. Other than our June 5K, she hasn't raced in a long time. Any time we've been limited (which is a lot lately), I've been deferring so she can get out. It's hard to have 2 people getting out that often.  But this is a big race and I've been doing what I can to help her be ready for it.

She's been at 30-35 MPW for almost 4 months now consistently running slowly like me. I'm really excited to see what she can do. And also a little nervous. She feels she isn't ready. I think she's going to crush it.

I think she has a great shot to run sub 1:45 (< 8:00 min/mile)  Her PR in the HM was last year with me and she still hasn't broken 8:30 pace so it would be a big jump. But, she also ran last year's 15K at 8:01 pace on a brutally cold day and she's in even better shape than then. Fingers crossed....
Oh, yeah. And this continues to play a role in my feet dragging about another BQ attempt. It's difficult, but we're usually able to map out our calendar so one of us can train at a time. We laugh about the thought of both of us training at the same time until we are able to leave the kids home alone. One gets priority and the other gets it in when they can. That's the way it's gotta be, so I'm lock-step with you in that regard. Keep supporting your wife and your time will come again soon.

Overall the weather looks good.  The 30s Saturday night with wind will be a shock since most of my runs have been in the low 90s.  I'm scrambling to find gloves and hand warmers this morning.  Looks like it may start off wet.  Was hoping to be able to use Carbon Xs, but I think I'll have to start with trail shoes, especially since the first 2 hours will be in the dark and I know nothing about the course.  My son lives in Indy so we'll be hanging there a couple of days.

BnB needs to consult with us before he signs up for these things. I'd have loved to meet the madman at Burning River, but of course we scheduled a vacation during it this year.

Knowing the course is HUGE.  I do so better on the trails I know well.  I can plan for the nuances which don't appear on maps or elevation profiles.  Great choice.

I'm hoping running the Houston marathon again, and being able to properly visualize each section, will help boost my performance a little this year.

Depending on when you are actually in Indy and what both or schedules are like, I would be happy to buy you a beer and say hey...

Thanks.  I'll keep that in mind.  Driving up tomorrow and dinner plans tomorrow night.  Probably will leave mid day for Chain O Lakes to pick up packet and survey course.  Looks like I'll be staying 30 min away from the race Friday night.  Family is coming up Sat afternoon to crew.  I never know how I'll feel afterwards.  If it doesn't work out this time, I'll be getting back that way on a regular basis so maybe we can catch a run and beer when it's less hectic.

Agreed, despite it almost certainly being in suboptimal conditions I'm strongly considering my next BQ attempt here in Cleveland for specifically that reason. Familiarity. Isn't what you're getting at with Houston, but repeating the morning routine too. Surprised it never registered before, but race morning Sunday was so relaxing. Even with preparation it wasn't when I went on the road for my last two BQ attempts. I think there's a ton of hidden value in that known.

I get the feeling he wakes up and says: "Huh. Looks like there is a 100 mile race in two weeks. Guess I'll sign up."
If all goes well this weekend, I'll be in Vienna Illinois in four weeks running Tunnel Hill.

It’s entirely reasonable to enjoy a rest day buying shoes, entering the Berlin lottery and searching for east coast trail races for the end of next year.

Not sure anyone here can actually validate the exactness of your comment...

I love my dog to death, but I wanna kill the little ####er right now. Got home from work to discover that she'd chewed the rubber tips off my $200 running sunglasses. 😡

I have a pair of the NB Fuel Cell 5280s. Haven’t worn them yet because they are supposed to be worn for short fast runs. I don’t really partake in either of those two types of runs. I kind of have a shoe problem. Also, a new color way in the Nike Vaporfly Next% line drops tomorrow. Pink Blast.

I so thought you were going to say your shoes.

I wish the VaporFlys fit me better. I LOVE those fluorescent colors!

The pink ones are pretty sharp. Although they’re not available at the moment, the new Next%s were customizable on Nike id a few weeks ago. I am assuming they sold old or couldn’t keep up with the orders. You couldn’t order a different color, but they had the option available to use the new bottoms with the old flyknit upper from last year. I remember you saying you had a 2018 pair and didn’t seem to have any issues with them. Just throwing that out there as an option. I’ll keep my eyes open on Nike if they have that option available again.

A really enjoyable run today.  Went to one of my favorite spots, the paved 7.3 mile loop in Busse Woods, for my last long run of this cycle.  Temp in the 60s; humidity was moderate ...great conditions.  The run itself was productive at 15 miles, with a late 4 miles @ 7:24/mile.  Early on, I ended up connecting with another (even older) runner and we had a relaxing few miles together as we chatted and got acquainted.  He's a 70 year old retired physics professor from Berlin.  It turns out Helmuth is in town for the Chicago Marathon, but not to run the race (though he is, obviously, still a runner).  He's involved in the tracking and communication of pace data for the elite runners.  He's been doing that for a number of years, now, and works at all the major marathons - Chicago, Berlin, London, etc.  I'm not sure what company it is that does that, but it was interesting to hear him talk about it.  So yeah, a nice run on a great day, plus a good conversation with my new BFF from Berlin.

I think I need a decent HR monitor - is the OP up to date on the latest and greatest?  I’m willing to spend some to get a good one - would like HR (strapless), Bluetooth and music preferable.  I’d like to swim in it.

On a more serious note, I'm a fan of the Garmin 245. They have a music version. I'm pretty sure it should cover all your bases without breaking the bank (~$350).

Took a couple days off after my knee issue...well did an elliptical/ kettlebell workout on Monday and nothing yesterday.  I have been icing my knee and heating / working on my back which is likely related

Got out for 4 after a longer warmup than usual.  The knee was a bit achy but did not feel weak like before.  Run felt fine, though I was very cognizant of my knee/stepping the whole time.

I intentionally left at a time where I could only get in 4 since my wife had to head to work and I was in charge of the kids. I'm glad I did, because I would have  gone for another 3 or 4 like an idiot.  We'll see how this holds up later.

Saturday morning run forecast: 35 degrees + 27 dew point = 62 SI.  :pickle:
For my run this morning it was -10C (14F).  Does dew point and humidity even matter then?

Nice thing is that I basically had no sweat on me when I got home.  Long-sleeve quarter-zip, shorts, wool socks, touque, and mittens.

I'm not ready for that...

But also not quite ready for the dark either. It was only like 6:30 or so when I left home for 10 miles last night. It was completely night by the time I got home. Need to dig out my headlamp. Never tried to run with one on but time to start. Also waiting on my noxgear glowy vest thing to show up...

Yeah even though I ran in much colder temps last winter, it's way too early in the season for this.  Even for Calgary.  I bet we set another record low for the date, in fact.

I run so early now that (except in June/July when the sun rises at 0530), 100% of my weekday runs are in the dark.  Thankfully my route is very well-lit so I don't need a headlamp.

Street lights are few and far between in the neighborhoods around my house. Plenty of interconnecting streets/neighborhoods that I did all of my 10 miles last night on side streets or sidewalks so no too much of an issue, but as it got dark, there were definitely a few spots that I wanted some light to verify the footing and/or see some rough patches of pavement a little better.

This time last year, I started going on the treadmill if running in the evening. I know I'll use the indoor track at the Y and some treadmills over the winter but I'm all for putting that off as long as possible!

What G said... 245 music hits those requirements and if/when you get fed up with the wrist HR you can pair it with a HR strap.

On the race calendar, you put a goal of 59:xx (9:39 pace)

Uh, you just ran an "easy 8" this morning and put up a 1:01:29 10K in the middle of that (9:54 pace)

Methinks you need to adjust your goal.  By a lot.

Dew point doesn't really matter once below 50something. Where in that something just depends person-to-person. I've thought about trying to conjure up something for the other end of the spectrum, but haven't been successful. I know when performance will suffer before I go out, but putting a metric to it? Not there yet. i.e. no matter the other conditions 14F alone will impede performance.

I think wind/lack of sun is a bigger deal when it starts getting cold.
