Ran a 10k - Official Thread (17 Viewers)

Welp, that was a successful way to cap off 25 days of running in a row. Hour 20 HM pace is 6:05. I got down to a net 6:11 pace 12 days ago after being in the high 6:teens in September, so let's bring it down to goal then see if I can sustain - 6:05/6:11/6:02/6:03/5:56/6:04/5:59 (net-6:03). I screwed up the beginning of mile 2 as I looked down 0.3 mi into it, saw 6:32, and had to haul ### to (try to) catch-up. But other than that I'm not sure it could have gone much better. A couple of short 5+% grade inclines late got my attention, but I didn't feel like I was laboring at all until the final half mile.

Finished October with 206 miles, most in a month since March 2018. I've nailed all 10 workouts beginning with the Oct 6 race, only three recovery runs north of 8 minute pace during that stretch, and as I sit here writing less than an hour after that workout...I feel fine. The only reason I'm not running tomorrow is a 36 hour wall of rain just arrived. Seems like an appropriate time for an off day. I'm going to be antsy though.

In a good place right now...
You think?

You've been on fire. Great stuff.

@MAC_32 you’re killing these workouts running them much faster than I have been able to run them.  My last workout is tomorrow, 5 at HMP with a target of sub 6:20 pace, unfortunately it will be raining. Looking forward to taking it easy next week, this plan has been tough.
I’ll be out there with you in the dark rain trying to figure out how to get goal pace out of these legs.

Stoked you’re at last 🆘 run.

Got out on a cold, dark, rainy day today with my wife. The first 5 minutes sucked but after that it felt really good to be out there. The slow running is tough as I want to run fast enough to feel a little warmer.  So my pace was a little faster today.  Breathing felt great all the way through, though, and could comfortably talk even in the 140's and 150's.  Fitness is definitely improved overall.

Had an incident less than a couple miles into the run. It's all sidewalk the entire run (and a nice one at that) with the exception of having to cross the road at one point. It's a somewhat busy road, but there is a large crosswalk with a large yellow sign on both sides of the street marking it with a picture of a pedestrian and a bicycle plus a yield sign. You press a button and lights start flashing on both sides too so that cars can see it and yield.

My wife and I get to it, wait a moment as 3 cars pass by on our side, push the button and start to run across. A car coming from the other direction sees us and finally slows down and stops as we are almost halfway across and as we are in front of her.

She starts holding down her horn and yelling at us while we are in the crosswalk. My sweet wife starts yelling back (even dropping a couple F bombs at that  ) and we both just stand there pointing out the crosswalk to the lady. Finally got going again.  You can see the sudden pace drop in the run about 1.5 miles in on Strava.

As luck would have it, on the way back (about 30 minutes later), we see her car parked in an empty parking lot as we are running by. My wife takes my phone to get a picture of her car and license plate (even though I already saw it and memorized it just in case). The lady was still sitting in the car but nothing else was said or done.

My wife rejoins me and goes "I hope she has a hard time sleeping tonight"

:lmao:

I am trying to visualize this happening, but I just cannot. Go Mrs. @gianmarco!

@gianmarco - I cannot overstate how much I love this. I would've done the exact same thing. Tell your wife I'm proud of her.

Daaaaaaaaamn!

Nice!

Do you have an end number in mind?
Well, 185 is my enthusiastic bet with @The Iguana.

But, if it keeps coming off with what I'm doing, 180 would be a great goal.

I can't believe I'm even at where I'm at now. So anything beyond is gravy and I'd be happy if I didn't lose another pound.

With winter/Thanksgiving/holidays coming up, I'm sure there will be creep up. So I'm trying to keep getting it down to buffer that as well.

We went to update our drivers licenses yesterday because of our new address. The lady starts to confirm the info, asks my height, then looks at the weight, looks at me, and then goes "you're not 215 pounds".

So I got to tell her 190 and told her now she's putting pressure on me to keep it there.

Little funny joke to go with that:

My wife was with me since we both had to update. I went first. When I was done, she came up to the counter with the same lady. It was $12 for mine but she said I could write the check for both on one check (stupid $1.50 credit card charge so did a check instead).

So after I finish writing the check, I ask if I need to put anything specific in the memo section. She pauses, then tells me to put my phone number.

Me: "If you wanted to ask me for my phone number, couldn't you have done it before my wife came up to the counter next to us".

Weighed in at 184 today.

Just kidding. Actually I've been pretty flat this month despite putting in a lot of miles. While eating has been relatively healthy, I have had a little more of it often. Long, long runs make you hungry!

My DL still says 225 and I know I lied on it when I filled it out - I was heavier.  It doesn't expire until 2024 but I'm ok with that - almost nobody sees it except when I'm buying alcohol and it's a good reminder for me.

Just looked at mine... it says 185. But it has said 185 for 20+ years - which is when I last weighed 185.

Actually as good a day as any to update since there is no run planned for today...

145.1 miles for October, 1068.4 for the year. Still at ~192 lbs - basically no change for the month. Weigh-ins throughout the month were quite the roller coaster - bouncing up and down between 191 and 196.

Message to future Gian - the mind will never be satisfied. But that's a good thing.

Also, hat tip on the practicality with the upcoming holiday's. The weight goals I wrote down for myself are 183 at my last pre-race check mid Nov, the same mid Dec, nudge up to 187 the week of Jan 6, then back down to 183 again by the end of Jan. I'm sure if I get there at that weight then I'll put 179 on my radar, but that's an internal tennis match for future MAC.

Had that feeling driving in of such joy my workout was done.

October miles in the books at 189 with a few missed days from vacation and travel. YTD at 1600 and will be around 200 in Nov and less in Dec so 2000 will likely wait till year. Capped October with a hard session this morning in the rain with 9 at goalish pace. Very good month and I’m on track with about 5 weeks until race day. No tune up races just last 4 weeks of quality. I need them all and will juggle a bit to hit something around 18 miles in the next couple weeks. Priority are the tempo runs and I’ve been hitting them thurs or Friday depending on how I feel and which weekend day I have more long run time. The fatigue is here but familiar. Been a bit disrupted by some new morning schedule stuff so having to get up even earlier on some workout days has sucked but it’s still my best time.  I could fall asleep most any time of day if given the opportunity. Let’s ####### go.

Book note:

Read ‘Running the Edge’ on the plane, about Meb’s coach and his early days and teams. First half was some of the best running stuff I’ve read.  Three thumbs up.

Been between a rock and a hard place with the running lately.

The core muscle soreness is not getting better, so I'm trying not to aggravate it too much. I can run, but it is sore all the way through at this point. Doc says I don't have a hernia. Not really sure what to do at this point.

Core exercises right now are causing discomfort. Don't wanna take too much time off and lose fitness, but not sure I can put in a 30 mile week right now. It's been hard enough to get in 20 miles a week with the soreness. Trying to take extra rest days.

Need to get this figured out before basically December 1, which is when the Hanson HM training plan starts.

Lots of good signs in your training, after 10 months you're already ahead of last year's mileage total. In today's MP workout you were 10-12 sec/mile faster than your final MP from last year's marathon. You're HR was up a bit today but so was mine with warmer than usual conditions.

Physical therapy?

Just jumping in here to whine about my butt.  New shoes didn't fix it.

Spent the weekend in NOLA with friends, and managed to get one run in.  Then three days off (Sun/Mon/Tue), which is normally just one (Mon).  Yesterday (Wed) I'm on the road again and force myself to use the hotel treadmill (thunderstorms outside, airport hotel, nowhere to run).  Starts OK, but 30 minutes in, I'm soaked in sweat and my right glute is as bad as it's ever been.  Pain is radiating down through the knee and calf as well.  All despite the three days off and some Naproxen to boot.

This morning I'm sitting on the couch feeling sorry for myself.  I took the day off work (help MIL with her Halloween display -- she gets 600 kids every year) and I have time to hit the trails when the sun finally rises (~0830, ugh).  But my glute was sore enough to screw with my sleep last night, and I know it's going to be bad for almost the whole run if I go out.  But sitting here typing this, I can feel my fitness just leeching away...

My Vegas HM is just three weeks from now.  This should be my peak training week.  99 minutes is seeming less and less likely.  No idea what to do.     :kicksrock:

Physical therapy?
Yeah, that may be the next step. I also have an appointment with my GI doc in about 10 days, so I'll ask him about it. My fear is that it is tied somehow to the stomach pain I've been dealing with.

I literally did nothing strenuous to cause it, so its a little concerning. Sucks getting old.

Better to be a little under trained and healthy than sufficiently trained and unhealthy. You haven't been under 174 miles in a month since February. You're not in a bad spot. Sure, it'd be nice to be peaking right now instead of tending to an ailment, but you haven't lost any fitness. This is just a stepback week at an inopportune time.

Priority is figuring that thing out, which is why I hesitate writing this...but I feel obligated to remind you about December 2018/January 2019. You need a base before jumping into the plan.

Yep. That hard part of that plan starts later obviously, so these months right now were supposed to be base building. Hence the concern.  The clock is ticking on my best laid-out plans.

Even just an initial consultation being poked, prodded, checking for muscle tightnesses, watching you walk, etc. might provide you valuable feedback.

I feel like I need to relinquish the gangsta title.  Looking at the MCM race pics, the numerous finish line pics are definitely not gangsta style.  I knew I was getting a bit of a tilt over the final half mile, and the final slope really blew me out, but I didn't realize what an ugly/comical, old-man lean I had coming into the finish. You can have a good laugh over that.     :bag:   Not sure what causes that.  But it's good, right, 'cause I left it all out on the course?  The dark sky photo is in the shoot just before the start.  I'd finish a madcap sprint to get positioned where I wanted in the corrals as the front runners were already taking off.  That pic is of me walking and trying to calm myself for a moment before starting to, you know, run a marathon.  The hand-on-heart pics are from the memorial Blue Mile.

eta: And yes, those are "ranger panties," which were provided along with the shirt by one of the vets associated with the Institute.

Pick #4 is pretty bad-### to be honest. Like, I'm gonna walk right up here and make this race my beeeyitch!

And the pic with the Capital building in the background is pretty dang cool.

Totally this, @ChiefD. They can assess you, determine what is acute and requires rest and treatment versus what is something you can work through and try to strengthen along the way.

The site asks to pick a package, but pics #19 and #20 clearly do that for me     :pickle:

I'm in a better place YoY and need to look back at the last block of tempo workouts and race day last year to help my plan for race day. I ran long last year so my finish average is not quite where most my miles were spent. Will be waffling on how big of a swing to take on race day for the coming weeks.

Starting to dial in my race plan for Monumental.  I'll share more as we get a bit closer to the race.

I'll begin to pack this weekend.  I need to fly to Atlanta for work for Wednesday through Friday and then I'll head directly to Indy.

Physically, my hip is feeling better.  Work is insane this week as I'm presenting to our Board of Trustees tomorrow.  I'm hoping next week provides a respite and a lot less stress!

Something more than rf; dbap? That's about the only plan I have!

Actually my plan is pretty simple - run with the 3:40 pacer for as long as I can do so comfortably. If at some point in the 20 to 25 mile range I still feel like I have a little more, maybe push ahead of the pace group a little. Ultimately, it may come down to just trying to hold on for dear life, IMO.

Uploaded my 500th Strava activity today.

Could be the last one for a while.  I think I need to take a break and see if I can get my glute/piriformis (whichever one this is) better.
