Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

Just got back from my run.

I was 3rd-and-10 from my ad-hoc 200,000ft of elevation goal for 2019.  Given that it's three days from the end of the year, I'm in 4-down territory.

Today, I had just planned to throw a short 7-yarder to set myself up well for a 4th-down play on Tuesday (the 31st).

Got through about 75% of the required elevation over ~3 hours today and called an audible.  Could have taken the left turn back to the car, but I said "#### it, Zasada, get it done today, and haul your ### back up that hill you just hauled it up a few hours ago".

Closed the deal.  Now sitting at 200,492 ft of elevation gain and can watch some football with great satisfaction.  Also got my Strava Dec HM badge which just yesterday I had figured wasn't going to happen.  And to top it all off:

  • Weekly distance PR - 96.2km (~60mi)
  • Weekly elevation PR - 3,656m (~12,000ft)
  • Weekly time 2nd best - 13h21m (do you guys down there use some stone age version of time I also need to convert for you?)
And to take some advice from @SteelCurtain, I think tomorrow is a forced rest day.  The last time I PR'd my weekly distance, I found myself off for four weeks to get my butt back to some semblance of usefulness.  It still hurts now, but the pain is tolerable.  Speaking of which, I'm still waiting on the ####### clinic to call me back for an appointment.  :rant:

Anyone want to throw caution to the wind and have a run streak contest?

Rules:

Starts January 1.  Although you may enter the year with a streak, everyone starts over for the purposes of this contest.

For a day to count, you have to run at least 1 mile.  It can be outside, inside or on a treadmill.
I would love to join this, but:

  • I don't think my body responds well to more than 7 or 8 day streaks
  • I have this weird mental block about short runs ("Zasada, if you're not going to do 10K, don't even bother...") -- the only times in the last two years I have done <10K street runs were prescribed tapers

I’ll start the new year on a day drinking streak, tailgating at the Rose Bowl. It’s gonna be a short streak though, as training really needs to get ramped up starting next weekend. And I have to work on Friday, so there’s that.

He’ll of a day (and week) @Zasada!

Welcome to the 200k vert club, good to have another FBG member.
For a nanosecond I thought I might be able to compete with the master, but after looking at your profile, I see you're way ahead of me.  :tebow:

1. Nice work!

2. :lmao:  at the time comment

3. :lmao:  at 12k elevation... that's about my total too... FOR ALL OF 2019!

This will probably come down to @Juxtatarot and @gruecd at the end.

Naturally, juxt will win this.
Nah, that's not my kind of thing.  Similar to @Zasada, I just don't see the point in going out for a run if I'm not going to do at least 4-5 miles.  Not worth the effort of getting all my #### together, getting dressed, having to cool down and shower afterwards, etc.

2019 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

My two stated goals for this year were to go sub-2:59 at Carmel and to run faster than my 3:09:48 course PR at Boston.  Thanks mainly to some ####ty weather (cold rain at Carmel and warm/humid at Boston), I didn’t do either.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2019

Just like last year, set a new PR in the marathon (2:58:29) at Indy.  Also set a new 10K PR (39:09) at my Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race)

This one is easy, and it wasn’t even my own race.  @gianmarco digging deep for one last big push to finish the 15K in St. Louis.

A race or race training disappointment during 2019

Nothing really comes to mind.  I guess I could’ve had a little better mental focus during the middle third of Monumental.  But overall pretty happy with how things went this year.

Total training volume during 2019

Currently at 2,623 miles for the year.  If I can do 18 miles the next two days, I’ll have another 200-mile month, and I’ll finish the year with the EXACT same mileage as last year (2,641).  I was also pretty good about making to the gym 2-3 times/week for my strength/core work.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year

Really need to be more mindful and deliberate about what I eat, especially as I get older.  I write this as I sit eating a bag of chips from Qdoba…

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2018

There’s been so much bad-assery that it almost doesn’t feel right to mention anyone by name, for fear of slighting somebody else.  That said, I’m obviously partial to @gianmarco's big PR in St. Louis.  Dude went deeeeeeep into the pain cave, and I couldn’t be more proud of him for it.  A couple of others that stuck with me were @MAC_32's stupid fast half marathon, @tri-man 47's run in DC, and @The Iguana's debut marathon (supposedly).

Other experiences or comments (about your year or any of the other guys, including funny memories)

I was really fortunate this year to have a chance to meet/hang out with a lot of you guys IRL.  First it was @Brony, @ChiefD, @Juxtatarot, @tri-man 47, @gianmarco, and @JShare87 at the relay.  So fun.  Then I got to hang out with @ChiefD again (and break his cooler…sorry) when the Packers played his Chiefs at Arrowhead.  Next was Monumental with @SteelCurtain (who I also saw briefly in Boston) and @The Iguana.  Then to top it all off, my wife and I got to spend a couple of days back in St. Louis last month with @gianmarco and his amazing family.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but I consider myself very blessed to be part of this amazing community, and I’m super thankful for the many friendships that I’ve formed because of it.

Goal(s) for 2020:

The first part of next year is going to be pretty fluid.  My thinking right now is to put myself in a position to race Carmel….but to only pull the trigger if the weather is absolutely perfect.  If not, I’ll pivot and save myself and try run 3:05 or something in Boston.  Spring weather is so damn unpredictable that I just don’t want to miss an opportunity.  What happens with those two races will determine how I approach Prague and/or Lublin.

For fall, I’m pretty sure I’ll take advantage of the special pricing and sign up on Wednesday to go back and run Monumental for the third straight year in November.  And I’ll likely still try to do my “run across Wisconsin for charity” thing, too.  Probably need to start working on that soon…

ETA:  One other goal - for @gianmarco to not freeze to death when the wife and I host him and the missus at Lambeau in a couple of weeks!  Now I just need the Saints to beat the Vikings next weekend...

Your training this year was incredible.  Some of those runs you posted left me agape.  You deserved every second of your PRs.

:whistle: I'll be out in the first week.

Workout / tri category might be fun.

Push-up competition? 🧟‍♂️💪🏽

Flight booked for Washington in July.

Just looked and there are 460 spots left for the Saturday marathon (was 500 when I signed up a month ago). Over 800 spots for the Sunday marathon. And, if at all concerned, you can defer to another year or another person for a nominal fee (I think it was $20).

So, for whoever is remotely considering it ......

@tri-man 47

@ChiefD

@bushdocda

@xulf

@MAC_32

@The Iguana

@AAABatteries

@SFBayDuck

@Zasada

@Otis

I was a big ol' poosay this morning.  Got up around 5:45 and got dressed to go run an easy 6 miles.  Walked outside to let the dog out, and it was cold, wet, and windy.  Went back inside and decided I'd run later instead.  Ashamed of myself.... :kicksrock:

Your avatar captures it brilliantly.

I just came back from a nice 8 miles in the wind and a combo of rain, snow, and sleet. I feel glorious!

I'll just point out that his run was at 37 degrees and he mostly had a crosswind.
That wind almost felt like it was in my face in 3 directions. But, yeah, I was only truly running into the wind a small percentage of the time and most of the time had his to keep it from being too bad.

But that long north / south section furthest from home is on a road between farm fields on either side and that's where the snow and ice was worst with the wind whipping it into my face most of the time so I'm still flexing over here...

My run yesterday was similar without the moisture. I ran around the outside of the mall right by my house to block the wind that was swirling all over the place.

Was quite nice actually. Avoided getting blasted for the entire run.

I really am pretty pumped up right now. This time last year I was still just trying to "feel my way around", see what an old, fat fart could try to do. All the goals that I set where kind of just "dreams". I didn't even know if I would truly stick with the whole running thing all year, much less if I could hit the seemingly lofty goals I set.

Now that I have a year behind me, I am totally stoked for the year ahead. I'm not sure how much more I have in me especially as I head toward my 50th birthday in the fall - I know @tri-man 47, I'm but a babe! But I am excited to try to push my limits.

Bring on 2020!

:hifive:   I spent my 40's wondering if the competition would ever slow down.  The bracket did thin a little for 50-54 ...more so at 55-59, and then it's a cliff at 60-64.  I move on to 65-69 in the fall  (!) and it looks pretty much like 'last man standing.'

Did my last run of the year this morning to bring mileage to 1,890; elevation of 18,000+ (= a Duck race); 248 runs.  I know I couldn't stop at 249 runs, and I don't feel like doubling up today or tomorrow to hit 250, so I'll hold off and get the new year started on 1/1/20.  However, I'm not particularly interested in an every-day challenge (sorry Juxt!).

BTW, looks like we've got five of the gang in the impressive 2K mileage club for the year:

SteveC  - 2,788

@gruecd - 2,623

@Juxtatarot - 2,435

@pbm107 - 2,216

@MAC_32 - 2,073

Juxt, if you start running now, you might be able to catch Grue by tomorrow night ...

Wind really is the worst.  I can handle cold and snow as long as it's calm, but a strong, northerly wind.... BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

You really are a bad MF. We may give you a hard time about your age, but I think we’re all a little jealous of your accomplishments. I’m 33 years old and can’t walk each morning. You’ve logged 1,900 miles at 64! I have no idea how you do it. BMF!

What am I?  Chopped liver?

I’ll let my 2,236 miles stand off to the side unrecognized.  😀

Actually, it’s not bad considering I took 2 weeks off this past summer to go backpacking with my son in New Mexico and the last few weeks off of. 2019 as well. However, a far ways off from my 3,194 miles in 2018.

In terms of 2020, I suggested on Strava to @MAC_32 we both do 2,500 miles.  He agreed to it (I think).  Anyone else want to join us?

FTR, I did.

Sorry @SteelCurtain!!! As soon as I saw that you'd responded, I knew that I had overlooked your excellent year. In checking, I see I missed @Zasada, too.  :bag:   Hard to keep up with all the BMFery.

That Steve character (who doesn't count) is going to be close to running more miles in these past 3 weeks than I ran for the whole year   :bowtie:

I have been away for a while trying to recharge, how much do I owe for fantasy football and who should I send the money to?

Any sprinters in here....  I was a pretty fast runner - my best 40 time was 4.88 (kind of look at me :P  )  but I don't know really what good times are for general events and I never really trained in running

My daughter is running track for the first time and had her first 200M race today.   Her team won the event but she ran just under 33 seconds - she is 14.

Is there like a chart anywhere for what average times are for females by age?

TIA

eta: I know shes not the best I'm just trying to get a gauge if its on the quick side - average - slow etc

@MAC_32 can probably answer these as he does XC coaching now.  And he's fast AF.

Needed sub 29 to make city finals. 30.xx would be top 2-3 at most schools. 33 is about average, but this has to be early in the season. Has she ran track before?

I am not sure but I will race Broad Street and my sister wants me for her birthday to organize a Bourbon Chase team in October. If my motivation returns, I would like to get my mileage back up this year.
I'm likely doing that this year with a friend here.  Couldn't join last year due to my trip to Italy.

Nope never ran before. She's a freshman and this is winter indoor track.  She's honestly doing it just to get some speed for softball

She ran 8.63 for 55m first race. I know that's a little slow but not completely horrible

Then I wouldn't read too much into what she's doing now. 33 is a good starting point. How much she gets between now and softball just depends on first what she puts in the next 6 weeks and second genetics.

I had to reread his strava mention of 600 miles in December to process it.
Looking at his detail, he had essentially no mileage through mid-July.  He then jumped to an 84 mile week and hasn't looked back.   :loco:

FYI, Gene Dykes (age 71) is at 2,492 miles for the year.

$50 to me.  @ChiefD, did you pay me?  Sorry if I missed it if you did.

@TripleThreat, @-OZ- PayPal'd me so I've sent your way on Venmo.  Waiting for @tri-man 47 to PayPal me and will forward that as well.  Did you get payment from @jb1020?
