Ran a 10k - Official Thread (14 Viewers)

Had my first real run since the marathon. Felt really good. Did a lot of reflecting on the race out there this morning. Around mile 9, Meatloaf came on and I started flying while singing aloud. Who else added to the playlist? Don’t be shy, that song is absolute fire. 
I added it and played it on the way to my son's soccer game last weekend.  

He played his best game of the season.  :yes:

 
I feel absolutely awful right now. Sucks after a good week. 

I didn't get out on Monday like I hoped. It was fine as I needed to rest from Sunday work and the week. Ate some food from Sam's that day as we went shopping and probably ingested a week's worth of sodium. Returned there yesterday for an eye appointment and ended up eating there again and then went out to dinner last night and ate more than I should have and drank more wine than I should have.

So here I am this morning with 2 days of no running, probably up 5 pounds, my resting HR was incredibly elevated this morning, I feel like complete ###, and we have a bad winter storm moving in this morning until tomorrow night. On top of that, my wife's brother flew in for work and is now delayed a day so will come visit tonight which likely means dinner somewhere. 

And to think, this used to be a normal thing 2.5 years ago. 

I can't wait to get out now and run. I may not eat all day today. Oooof.
I would do anything to run.....

It's been added to level 1. We'll see when the shuffle selects it if its effect leads to it being leveled up to #2.

 
1.  While my musical interests are all over the place and range from country to Kesha to some super grimey hip-hop, you will NEVER find any Meatloaf on my playlists.

2.  Weird 12-mile run this morning.  First 4-5 miles felt like it was gonna be one of those grind-it-out "lunch pail" runs that we talked about.  Just wasn't feeling it.  Started feeling a little bit better from 6-8, and then the last 4 miles felt almost effortless.  Averaged 8:05 pace for the first half and 7:30 for the second half, with the last two miles at 7:22 and 6:59.  

 
Somebody give me a good workout to do tomorrow. 10 miles total with wu & cd.
You could do a simple fartlek workout.  After the wu, run the equivalent of a long block easy, then short block rather hard.  Rinse/repeat over and over.  So for the body of the workout, about 2/3rds will be easy; 1/3rd will be with a strong stride ...but no need to time the hard segments, and no need to be precise with the distances. 

 
Yeah, mine isn't meant to be effective either. I don't care how fast he is. I just want him to die or at least feel like it. Just returning the favor.
I get your (ill) intent, but your suggestion would be effective - objective of it is similar to mine. Where's your breaking point? and can you endure and do more even after you've gotten there?

 
Run 3-4 mile warmup to a track. Run 1 mile as fast as you can. Cool down 5-6 miles. Not meant to be an effective workout or anything, I am interested in seeing how fast you are.
I love the idea of an all out mile challenge but not with having to do 5-6 cool down miles afterwards.

 
Why don't you hit the lap button on your watch at the end of each interval?
I thought about that after rep #1, I recalled you all talking about it before - so I looked down at my watch, hit a couple buttons, didn't figure it out, called myself an idiot, then moved on with my day.

on mine you have to have "manual lap" enable - it's an on/off thing you can access in the menu before starting the activity. Then you just double tap the screen to mark a "lap".

How has the double tapping gone for you?  I hate it.  It seems like it doesn't register at least half the time.  In the winter with gloves, it's completely out of the question.

I’m looking for more “comfortably uncomfortable” than “uncomfortably uncomfortable” this training block. I’ll get back to the latter this fall when I’m back with my coach trying to PR again (and beat @Juxtatarot) at Monumental.

Depends... Sometimes it's all peaches and cream. But I've had issues at times. When I have used it outside for tracking intervals, I don't recall having had a huge problem - but I don't run out there when it is super cold and the gloves I have are meant to work with touch screen devices so it isn't too bad. The times I've had trouble are when I'm on the indoor track - it tends to be warm/humid and I can get quite sweaty... if my hands are sweaty, it doesn't always want to register, which can be a PITA.

That's ridiculous that you have to double tap the screen to mark a lap. One day when I have to replace my 230 hopefully there will be a watch available with a lap button. I must be getting old, these watches seem to be adding too many features that I have no interest in and seem to be buggier than ever.

Fortunately we still get a start/stop button.

In theory it seems like a good idea -  but the implementation/execution is less than perfect. 

 
I know you don't get in the training you should, but I'm pretty confident you can complete a marathon in less than 3.5 weeks.  You got this.

Well, I suppose it might help to stress the legs and let them heal - shoot for five four-day cycles. Make strong use of hill repeats to emphasize leg lift and drive.  Do a stress workout, run some easy miles the next day on tired legs, then recover for two days.  Repeat etc. :shrug:   Thats what comes to mind with no real science behind it.

The whole Fenix lineup has a lap button, as do the new Forerunners.  

 
As an FYI for any Saucony wearers - the Kinvara 10's are $59.95 and the Freedom ISO 2's are $89.95 at Running Warehouse.  I've also seen these prices on Amazon (not a ton of sizes left at either place).  I picked up some Freedoms.

 
I'm off work next week and I'm making a list of the stores and places I want to hit.  I'm thinking about testing out some Vaporflys although I must admit it makes we feel a little dirty.

I was looking into this yesterday and the closest store that has them in stock is 20 miles away. If I make the leap I guess I will have to order them online without trying them on first.

Is there a shortage and hard to keep in stock?  I didn't consider this.

Ok. So by now most of you know that I take my shovels seriously. I truly believe that there really is "a shovel for all scenarios". 

@Juxtatarot - I'm glad you reached out. I've been really worried about your shovel collection since you posted that picture, but I didn't want to say something because you've been so nice around here in terms of me whining and crying about running. So now, I appreciate your cry for help and am willing to provide the best guidance I can.

As those in northern climes realize, there are different types of snow. There is the nice, light powdery snow that is fun to frolic in - this is the snow you really want if you have to shovel. Easy on the back, pushes easy - really a joy to shovel.

The second type of the snow is the heavy, wet show. This is the sack breaker...the back breaker...the ultra of snow shoveling. You'll use every muscle in your body, and then some, for this shoveling job. 

And then there is the mix of the two. Sometimes you get that light snow that lands on a warmer surface, so you get a little wetness there but it still makes it easy to shovel. 

And the final ####-YOU scenario: a layer of ice that comes down first, and then the powdery stuff that lays so gently there that it fools you. You think you have an easy shoveling job in front of you but after one pass you realize: I'M GONNA BE OUT HERE ALL ####### DAY. #### YOU WINTER YOU ####### PIECE OF CRAP.

The point is, you need to be prepared for anything. I know you guys think I am some shovel buffoon, and that's ok. But I'm prepared for all scenarios here. Where you laugh at ME...well....I'm really laughing at YOU. So our goal here today is to turn @Juxtatarot into one you laughs at these other non-prepared shovel wankers.

Shovel #1

This shovel will do it all. The steel blade is perfect for all scenarios. This is the workhorse. Has a hardwood handle. Is a little heavier than most shovels but that weight is what gives you the power to dig into less-than-ideal snow scenarios. If I'm buying only one shovel, this is the guy.

Shovel #2

The 24" width is awesome for pushing lots of snow quickly, especially when you get that light powdery snow. The aluminum blade also gives you enough edge to get through slushy or icy surfaces. This shovel is designed to push snow - not lift it. You're moving a lot of snow quickly with this guy - you aren't out there creating snow forts or anything with this one. If you need to shovel fast in the morning so you can get to work, this is it.

Shovel #3

WARNING: This shovel is for powdery snow only. This is a nice lightweight snow shovel, and is usually a complement to your snow shovel collection. Easy on the back and arms, and you can usually work quickly with this shovel. If you can only buy one shovel, this is NOT IT. This is a luxury to have. I own three of these.

Shovel #4

Now I'm going to take you to an area where I'm not sure you are ready, but this shovel is what I like to call the: "It Will Do A Lot of Sheeit" shovel. Lightweight aluminum, so its easy to work with but has enough OOOOMF in the blade to cut through some light ice. This is also an ALL-SEASON shovel. You can scoop mulch with this. You can clean your garage and use this as a man's dust pan. You can scoop sarcasm from message board non-believers. This is the shovel you get when you are ready to go "Next Level.

Shovel #5

The ice-buster. This shovel is the backbone of all shovel collections. Is multi-faceted and ready for anything. When you have that hard layer of ice underneath, this shovel is a must for that scenario. Can also be used in all 4 seasons. If I remember, you may already have one of these. If so, you are one step ahead already.

Hope this helps. I know it is overwhelming, but should make you feel confident when you walk into that store. Don't get seduced by the ergonomic handles - they are made to look sexy and all, but snow shoveling is supposed to be back breaking and painful work. Plus, those curvy handles just look dumb.

I think you probably still have my cell number from Carmel, so if you start to panic at the store take a pic and text it to me and I can work you through it. Good luck!
