Also, is there no such thing as rain in Canada?
A)  Calgary gets very little rain (one of the sunniest cities in North America),

B)  What @ChiefD said,

C)  My treadmill is in Calgary (don't have one in DFW); and

D)  Rainy days in Calgary are always cold, increasing the pain, but in DFW it can be warm and rainy, making me willing to give it a try.

This is why I have so many pairs of shoes lying around. I just strap on an old pair and hope for the best. If I get soaked then immediately stuff them with crumbled up paper and put them next to a heat vent.

Clothes?   I don't avoid rain, but I try to avoid downpours. It's a game of probabilities, so it doesn't always pan out that way. But I probably only get a good soaking a couple times per year. And if there's any chance of one that I don't do a something of substance run that day. That way if it's that bad out then I'll just cut that day's run short knowing I'm not missing much. I don't wear anything different though. Just more liberal with the lube.
This.  Lube well, and use crumpled newspaper to soak out the moisture (you can take out the foot liner first).

Godspeed.

BMFs, any tips for running in the rain?  I figured that I'm going to have to nut-up and do this at some point here in DFW, and this Friday looks like a possibility, as well as next week.  I'm not talking about a drizzle (which I've done), but some serious Texas rain.

It is just as simple as "embrace the wet/suck", or is there gear I should get to make it suck less?  I've tried running in jackets before, but it doesn't last long.  Too hot.  Thinking about GTX shoes, but not sure if they're going to get soaked anyway, perhaps taking longer to do so.

I'll hang up and listen.
Old shoes for full rain runs.  As little clothes as temps allow. Hat and sunglasses to keep rain out my eyes.  Rain jacket usually overheats me but if cool enough that can be less awful.  Lube it up.

Took Summit out for a hike/run up Bald Hill this morning, same 1.5M, 900' hill I did 4 x repeats on a week ago.  Well with the stupid time change we were up there a little earlier than normal, as far as the natural world is concerned.  Summit was on a couple of scents like a hunting dog, at one point almost tunneling under a bush to try and smell something (there was a game trail on the other side of the bush).  As we approached the last 1/4 mile or so of the climb there's an open area, and we simultaneously saw three coyotes up on the hill above us.  One was rolling around on it's back, one was laying down (I think they were both pups), and the other was cruising through the open space looking for some rodent breakfast for her and her brood.  Summit laid down and stared at them for a good 10 minutes, and then I decided I wasn't going to take him any further up the hill as even though he's about the same size as an adult coyote, I don't want him around any part of a mama protecting her littles.

Kind of hard to see as they were a few hundred yards away, but it was really cool to watch for a bit even if it did cost me about 200' of vert on Strava!
Thanks for sharing.  Cool pics.

I haven’t been running recently and been away from this thread for a while because of it. I thought I’d give an update as to why.

After my 5 miler a couple weeks ago my wife was complaining that I was wheezing in my sleep. She convinced me that I should see a doctor and I agreed since I hadn’t seen one in a few years. I went into that appointment thinking that perhaps I had developed exercise induced asthma. She checked out my lungs and she thought they sounded fine, but agreed to prescribe me an inhaler. She agreed to refer me for a Pulmonary Function Test which is scheduled for tomorrow.

A couple of days later I decided to try a workout on the track and I bailed after the start of my 2nd interval.

I skipped my run on Friday for the first time found it difficult to breathe during the day and started with a dry cough. Saturday morning I woke up and I really was struggling breathing, my wife went out and picked up my inhaler and %SpO2 tester from CVS. The first %SpO2 measurement I took was 90% and everyone else in my family measured at 99%. The inhaler helped but I was taking one hit every 4 hours per my doctors direction. It was a real struggle the last hour between hits, it was exhausting not being able to take a deep breath.

Late Saturday night my wife suggested that I take two hits every 4 hours in attempt to get my %SpO2 over 95%. I have been much more comfortable since then.

I should note that I haven’t had a fever throughout this but for piece of mind I went to the ER 3:00 AM Monday morning hoping that they test me for Covid-19. They gave me a nebulizer and a chest X-ray which ruled out pneumonia. Since I didn’t have a fever and I wasn’t out of the country they didn’t test me. The nurse said that she didn’t think they had tests.

I don’t know what I have but I have to use an inhaler every 4 hours to get through the day, and I don’t have a history of asthma. I haven’t been in work since Friday. Hopefully the Pulmonary Function Test tomorrow will provide me with some answers. I don’t expect to be running anytime soon as carrying the laundry up the stairs is exhausting.
Wishing you the best dude.  Hopefully they figure it out.

Having a hard time keeping up in here.  It's been 12 hours days non-stop for two weeks with some 14 hour days mixed in.  Maybe some light at the end of the tunnel this weekend.  My only non work day was marathon day.  In addition to my regular job I've been working with my son replacing a tub and tiling a bath in one house and tile back splash/painting/wiring/fixture installation in another.

Have to find a new race that isn't cancelled or at risk. Not likely in the tri state.

Finding it hard to do the do without a target to train for.

I can 100% relate to this.  Knowing I'm not really primed to PR this spring, and with all my goal races presumably getting canceled, what's the point of even racing?

Being a northern boy, these warmer morning temps (17C/64F) are a treat.

For the first km.

Then I just sweat like crazy.

Can't wait for morning temps to reach the 80s... at least I'm going to get some heat training in for Miwok...

Here's the message so far from that race:

Coronavirus: Naturally, we are starting to get a few queries as to whether there is a chance that the race will be cancelled. All plans are being made for the race to go on. We spoke with representatives from LBL, and they agree that we should go ahead with the race. We will take precautions to keep you safe. Things like having extra hand sanitizers at the porta johns, more individual servings at the aid stations, volunteers wearing gloves, excessive wiping of tables with chlorox wipes, etc. Everyone should do their own part as well, by taking care not to contaminate items. Choose an item, and then take it. Use the provided tongs. Don't pick through.

If you want to get better then this is the opportunity to test some limits and see if you can break through the glass ceiling you've insinuated you have before. You have to find your want-to though.

Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon scheduled for March 28 postponed indefinitely after a government edict to cancel all public events with 100+ people.

Not that we’d be going anymore anyway, but this obviously doesn’t bode well for the full marathon in May.

Given all the work-related (stock market) stress that I’m dealing with, I absolutely do not have that kind of energy to invest right now.

It’s amazing how the mental exhaustion bleeds over into the physical. It’s a real grind right now.

Agreed. So relish chill time to the point of not having to worry about where my running shoes are

Here, here - this is a big reason why I really need to avoid trying to peak for October races.

The only thing I've got going for me for my race is it being in the middle of nowhere, unlike major marathons.  But I'm not optimistic.  This came today...

Dear SayWhat?,

We continue to understand and share the concerns of people throughout the world regarding the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and remain committed to your health and well-being.

We recognize that the situation is dynamic and evolves each day, with new information and understanding that informs the health and safety protocols issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Placer County Public Health. To the greatest extent possible, Western States will be implementing preventive measures and controls to ensure the health and safety of our runners, race volunteers, crew members and spectators. We continue to review and adapt our planning strategies as more is learned every day. All decisions regarding our event will be made in concert with advice and input from our partners in the health community, most notably Placer County Public Health and the State of California.

We do not anticipate cancelling or postponing our event at this time.

Since the situation is so dynamic, however, we will continue to regularly evaluate this decision based upon what the scientific community learns about coronavirus and what public health officials believe to be in the best interest of the communities they serve.

This is a challenging time for all of us. Perhaps the most important challenge of them all is to keep yourself and those around you healthy. We ask that you follow the protocols and information that are presented through the CDC’s website regarding good hygiene, travel abroad restrictions and what to do if you feel you are experiencing coronavirus symptoms.

Thank you for your support of Western States.

Sincerely,

Craig Thornley, Race Director

The Western States Board of Trustees

Miwok website has an update.  Maybe I'm optimistic, but the tone seems to be that they're planning to go forward with the race:

COVID-19 UPDATE: As you continue your training and prep for the epic 25th Miwok 100K, we are printing race shirts, ordering food, lining up excellent volunteers, AND monitoring the CDC website and the Northern California public health website. As with any flu: Wash your hands. Stay home if you're sick. Get healthy before resuming your training.

call me a sucker or just overly optimistic but I think life will go back to normal by the end of the month. things in may or later will not be affected if people don't make decisions too fast. rest of this month and into april, anything is possible. miwok being May 2nd, same as the Indy 500 HM on the borderline but I'm still hopeful that things will be "fine" by then.

I'll take the over.

me too. Got big vacation in mid-June that is now looking iffy.  But I hope Iggy is right.
I'm registered for a national conference in early August in Atlanta, and it draws an international attendance.  I'm holding off booking the flight to Atlanta for now.

We're going to Disney at the end of next week...

The trip is also tied to a medical conference my wife will be attending.

I’d suspect the conference will be canceled. Won’t be shocked to see Disney close the parks, either.

My race weekend (Star Wars Rival Run) is coming up in mid-April and there are already rumblings of cancellation/postponement for all 3 races.  The first time I did a 10k there, it was a mass of people. Thousands in my race alone. Not sure many want to be in the large pens with so many others in such close proximity right now.

I’ll throw my hat into the doom and gloom around here. I’ve been waiting to share why I haven’t been running for a few days now. Here it goes.

It took a few days to recover from my marathon at the end of January. Right when I started to feel healthy again, my brother texted me that they were going to be short for their flag football game. They were playing the best team in the league, and I felt bad leaving them hanging (I play every once and a while when they need me). During the game, my left knee started to swell and hurt. Nothing out of the ordinary, just some general pain and swelling I get in them at knee when I play sports. I’ve had ACL and Meniscus surgery and have some pretty bad arthritis due to that. After the game, my knee was swollen for longer than usual.

Still thinking it was my normal issues, I tried to run. I’d limp through a mile and try again the next day. Rinse and repeat for a few days. Finally decided to get a cortisone shot. I waited about 2-3 days after my shot to try running again. I limped through 5 miles. Took about 3-4 more days off after that and headed out for another shot. Got half a mile, turned around and knew I needed to see what was wrong.

I got an MRI on Monday and received the results yesterday. I have little to no Medial Meniscus, scar tissue, bone spurs, and my knee is pretty much bone-on-bone. I am going to need a knee replacement sooner rather than later, but I’m not comfortable heading down that road right now. We both agreed that a scope would possibly clean it up and “buy me a few more years of running.” I am not Mr. Tough Guy by any means, but if it were a pain thing, I’d push through it. However, it’s a mechanics thing. My knee is simply not working properly. Sometimes it gives way and I can’t walk normally, other times it feels perfect. Any time I try to run, it is not okay. I can workout with no issues, but running is close to impossible. Surgery scheduled for March 26th.

During all of this time off from running, I thought it was a good time to get an abdominal issue checked out too. My ultrasound from that revealed a polyp in my gallbladder and an issue with my liver. They referred me to a general surgeon based on the results. That appointment isn’t until April 3rd. Assuming they referred me to a general surgeon because I am going to need some sort of surgery. So who knows when I’ll be able to run again.

I already miss it like crazy. I go through all sorts of emotions throughout a day. My wife can tell something is off and she just says, “you’re sad because you can’t run, huh?” Although I get sad sometimes, I think this is what I need to get back that mindset of a full and complete training cycle.

I have been texting back and forth with everyone’s favorite human @gianmarco, and I am so grateful to have his brain a simple text away. Hopefully my texts don’t take up too much of his time. But I told him I’d be ready for Washington in July. There’s a lot of time in between, but I will do my best to run that marathon. So that’s the goal. Hopefully be able to resume running end of April beginning of May.

Although I get sad sometimes, I’ve taken this time to work on myself. I started practicing the “Wim Hoff Method.” It’s a breathing technique and cold therapy program. I converted a chest freezer into a permanent ice bath, and I mediate in in for 10 minutes a day. I’m in a good place mentally because I am reminded daily how lucky I am. It’s just running, not the end of the world. Sorry for the long post, but I hope to linger around for the next few months while not running.

I’ll see myself out.

That’s unpleasant news, but I love reading the bolded.  And you’re right, running doesn’t define you.  These things typically have a way of working themselves out, so I trust and hope that’s the case for you.  Best of luck JShare.

Man, some really tough stuff for some of our 10K brothers in here.

It's a reminder to be so thankful we can even get out there when we can. It really breaks my heart knowing some of you wonderful people want to get out there and can't. Yes, I know, there's other things that could be worse, but it's still a big part of a lot of our lives.

I know it must be incredibly hard to come in this thread when you can't get out there but I know we all understand either way.

Best of luck to all of you struggling right now with injuries, health, life, stress, or whatever else.
