Ran a 10k - Official Thread (10 Viewers)

Jeebus. Heal up, friends. All the best to all of you getting through injuries and the beer flu.

call me a sucker or just overly optimistic but I think life will go back to normal by the end of the month. things in may or later will not be affected if people don't make decisions too fast. rest of this month and into april, anything is possible. miwok being May 2nd, same as the Indy 500 HM on the borderline but I'm still hopeful that things will be "fine" by then.
Things are looking up for the end of the month based on how it's moved around the world. And by up, I mean the numbers are likely going to follow the same bell curve the rest of the countries affected earlier have...so I guess up is a nice way of saying things are going to be much, much worse by the end of the month.

But positive thoughts and whatnot!

Damn Share, good luck getting through the knee and other stuff. I was depressed last week just battling a calf to the point that my wife called it out.
The Wim Hof stuff I’ve listed to/read but other than the occasional ice bath never tried. Glad you’re finding it beneficial.  You’re going to come out even better in the end.  @JShare87

Just saw that the HM and marathon this weekend that goes past my backyard is cancelled. Expecting all 3 of my upcoming races will get the same fate as containment measures keep rolling out.

@JShare87, thanks for jsharing ...but, man, it hurts to read what you're going through.      I'm encouraged to hear about the way you've learned to cope with this mentally, though, and I hope and pray that continues.  I expect these next couple/few weeks will be challenging since all you can do is wait.  I'm rooting for you to be alright, alright, my friend.

(:makes note re:JShare preference in upcoming Favorite Human draft:)

@JShare87 - that sucsk.  I feel your pain and frustration.  On the one hand, it's easy to say, "it's just running, I'm in good health otherwise", but I know that it's not as simple as that in reality.  Good luck to you on the medical side, take your time on the recovery, and no need to feel bashful if you just want to vent in here and ##### about the bad hand you got dealt.

I keep checking the status of my race every hour or so, lol. Still on and there are still a few more people tricking in to sign up.

Dammit @JShare87. Bummed for your knee and other issues you are dealing with.

Man, I know you have come a long way in turning your entire lifestyle around. God - several of us have been blessed to see your mental strength up close.

So I know somehow, someway you will figure this out. But dammit I feel for you, man.

Since this seems to be the year of crap, I will share mine now.

Last year I was diagnosed with a degenerative disk in my neck. I think I alluded to it some in here, with my whole right side just feeling “off”.

The last two months it has been back with a vengeance. At this point I am feeling pain in my entire right side. My glute, hip, right shoulder blade, my neck, and I am feeling pain shooting up into the right side of my head behind my ear.

On top of that I have had an extremely low energy level. I’ve had some sinus stuff, so it may be tied to that, but I also have ulcerative colitis so low energy is a problem from time to time.

The combo of these things has obviously stunted this training cycle. At this point my A race is not going to be any kind of glory effort (if the race even happens at this point).

So running has been a #####. I’m actually pretty proud of the effort this past weekend with Yan and Ms Yan.

And look, I know I am extremely lucky I can still run, albeit my runs keep getting shorter and shorter. But its a fight right now.

I am hoping and praying everyone here gets healthy and everything checks out ok. And this stupid coronavirus just adds another level of pissedoffness to the whole equation.

Blah 2020.

First time in 50 years that my team has a legit chance to win the chip, and now the NBA is suspending the season.

Starting to feel like the world is out to get me...

They'll restart a shortened season late spring.

I'm starting to get concerned about my BQ attempt. Best shape of my life all about to go to waste. Seems trivial in comparison to what else I've been reading lately though - both elsewhere and unfortunately in this thread.

Everything is gonna get canceled. Probably even dinky little races like Carmel and Milwaukee.

Did your race report get the Corona virus?

Mine isn't for 2 months and it's kinda dinky too, but looking at the timelines in early infected countries I'm not confident events will be active again by then.

So what have been peoples refund experiences on some of these cancelled events?
Fwiw, from nyrr concerning the NYC 1/2:

Due to the scale of the race during this unprecedented time, runners who registered directly with NYRR will be contacted in the next few days with the option to select either a full refund of their entry fee or guaranteed non-complimentary entry to the 2021 NYC Half next March (exact date TBD). Runners who gained entry through a charity or tour operator should reach out directly to that organization for the options available to them.

Work has taken priority this week in case we aren't allowed back next week and I ain't writing it on my phone. We'll see how tomorrow goes...
Calling BS here.  I haven't had a day less than 12 hour in about 3 weeks sans marathon day.    I managed to pull something together for a piss poor bop finish.  I know something epic happened at your freaking event.  This would be like running the moon landing on a two week delay just because. Maybe get the pre-race dump and nuro run part out of the way.  In lieu of that, at least post a dum dum chomping pic with you hulking out of your wife beater to tide us over.

Add me to the list of people dreading race cancellations.  I am signed up for a half in late April.  It's a smaller race with mostly locals, so I had been thinking that it would probably go off despite some larger races being scuttled, but that's looking less likely by the day.  I'd like to think I have a good shot at a PR, but between some nagging injuries and now cancellation concerns motivation is getting tougher to maintain.

So what have been peoples refund experiences on some of these cancelled events?
No refund for either the Gdynia Half Marathon or the Paris Marathon because they were cancelled, only postponed. Such BS as when I sign up for a race I usually know the date and plan on that being it. I would never sign up for a race and then let them assign a random date to it.

@pbm107..... Hoping today went well.....

Fingers crossed for a good update!
Thanks man, I am doing well. I started feeling noticeably better yesterday morning before meeting with the Pulmonary doctor. While I didn't get a PFT done, there was some miscommunication between my primary doctor and the pulmonary doctor, this guy checked out my lungs and prescribed me another inhaler, Symbicort. I have the PFT scheduled in April, the pulmonary doctor is good and I am looking forward to discussing the results with him.

I am feeling good this morning and my %SpO2 is at 97%. I think I will try go out for a test run on Saturday. Thanks for reaching out via PM.

Excellent!

Will need tracking info ;)

Every race I've ever signed up for makes you sign off saying that is possible. Just no one ever expects it to actually happen. That's one reason there are discounts for signing up early.

Per a dude in the COVID thread, "Cancellation hasn’t been announced but vendors to Boston marathon have been notified that’s it’s off."

Unfortunately that seems like the right call.  It will be interesting to see how they'll handle qualifications for next year.

@JShare87 I saw on Strava that you had a couple short runs and thought maybe something was up, but hoped it was just a funk.  Sorry to hear it's more than that.

As others have said in this thread, the only thing worse than running is not running, and I'm glad your wife has noticed that you're down and will help to carry you through it.  Wish there was something I could do to help, but unlike Juan, I have little to offer in terms of expertise or assistance.  But I'm rooting for you and get better soon, GB.

Land Between the Lakes Trail Runs

Saturday, March 14, 2020

Good morning. Please read the entire email, as it contains options for you.

This is easily the toughest email I've had to send. We've dealt with river flooding, severe ice storms, major snows, rain... you name it. We've always found a way to keep the event going, and we've been blessed to have you here year after year.

As of 06:00 this morning, the race is still on for Saturday. Everything has been purchased, and is ready to be put in place. We're ready to go. Based on the comments and emails we've received, you're ready to go as well.

In light of rapidly escalating conditions with Coronavirus, we feel that options should be made available for you.

We will be here with available staff, and the race will go on. We have every intention of providing a great event, all the while using enhanced protective measure to reduce risk. These measures are:

Packet pick up is normally a jovial reunion of great friends, and meeting new ones. This year we recommend cutting back on the hugs and hand shakes, and maybe not hang around as long to reduce the numbers in the Community Center.
Practice personal hygiene to an extreme.

The pasta dinner is still on, and the Yacht Club has a really good meal planned. You can still purchase at the door. $13 cash please.

Aid Stations: There will be hand sanitizer stations at each location. Snacks will be single servings, so no scrounging around. Volunteers will have gloves, and sanitizing wipes. This year we will have more paper cups. Throw the cup you use in the trash after drinking from it. IF you have a water bottle, do not fill it yourself. A volunteer will fill it for you from a gallon jug to reduce contamination.
Although we believe we can take care of your needs, be prepared for fewer volunteers than normal in the event some choose to stay home.

Common sense tells you that if you are sick, don't make the trip. You'd probably do this under normal conditions, but it's much more serious this year.

YOUR CHOICE: Come to the race, and we'll be here for you. OR, if you feel unsafe, stay home, and we'll offer you a 50% discount on next year's race. I wish we could offer more, but everything has been purchased, or rented, and much of it cannot be used later. An email will go out after the race explaining details of how to get your discount.

Be safe traveling, or be safe at home,

Steve
To steal a line from a meme going around... "We race at dawn, #####es!"

I wish more events would adopt this approach.  Your choice to attend [insert public event here], we're not going to make the choice for you.

In some cases it might be hard to staff things, and thus no choice but to cancel, but if can be staffed, give the participants the choice.

Unfortunately, given recent events and information as time has passed, that choice shouldn't be given.

It completely sucks, but limiting social gatherings and interactions is turning into a priority and shouldn't be a voluntary decision.

Little different scenario here I think - it's a pretty limited event. There's only like 630 people entered now and only maybe a 100 spots still open on the registration page. Not like there are 10K entrants or anything.

just looked 636 signed up, about 70 or 80 open slots - and that includes them opening up extra slots in the 23K - it had been full at one point.

@JShare87 I'm mostly a lurker here these days but went through something similar a few years ago with my knee. Was running 60 mile weeks, had completed multiple 50k's and was looking forward to my first marathon. Twisted my knee funny at a trade show the week before my first official marathon, knee ballooned up to the size of a softball and that was it. Had an MRI with similar results, bone on bone in a spot but guaranteed to get worse if I kept running.

Lost all motivation to do anything and had a tough time finding my woosa. Kept eating like I was running 6 miles a day so ballooned up in weight to higher than I was when I first started running which is what got me started in the first place. I've always been a gym rat so after about a year & half of my pity party I got back into lifting. That lead to walking on the treadmill and that first tentative jog. Knew I was never going to run again and 3 years in I still struggle to run a half mile without stopping. What I've gone all in on is biking. Took a long time to get my mind around it but I'm in with both feet now and loving it.

Stay positive. Keep focused on your health and how you can channel that running energy into something else. It's out there and while it might seem like there isn't much you can do, there is. Hell, even @gruecd rides a Peloton now.

I can't believe that I'm typing this, but I'm starting to come around to this same line of thinking.  Selfishly, most of us endurance athletes would be just fine if we contracted the virus, but the risk is just too high that we'd pass it along to someone else who wouldn't be as fortunate and who would contribute to the inevitable overburdening of medical resources.

This is exactly it.

It's really unfortunate, but the reality is we all need to just stay home.

This, 100% considering everything we know about this at this point.

how much of a selfish butthead am I if I drive the 4 hours and race this weekend? Cause I'm still planning to do so - the only thing that may throw that off has to do with my daughter being at Ball State. As of Monday they will be all online classes only. She's at class today and tomorrow figuring out what that exactly looks like - she's involved in some practicum classes, etc. Also has to figure out her work stuff. Might need to go help move her home over the weekend but hoping to wait a bit before that.

Actually will be interesting to see what happens there - if all 20K people are all trying to move out over the next couple of days, the "shut down" kind of has the opposite effect of what is intended.

Kinda selfish, but I won't judge you for it.  I had tickets to Bucks/Celtics tonight, and if it hadn't been canceled, I still would've gone to the game :bag:

Ask yourself this:

How do you know if anyone at that race has been exposed and has it?  We are seeing it now in various parts of the country.  It's here and in higher numbers than we know as we don't even have adequate testing.

How would you feel if you pick it up and bring it back to your city?  Sure, you'll likely be fine.  But this is how these things continue to spread.  As we learn more, we're seeing these numbers are significant and the ONLY way to stop it is to shut things down for a period of time and limit contact to stop the continuing spread.

Is a race worth that risk to you?

Selfishly, you'll probably be fine.  Odds are you won't come into contact with someone.  But take that thinking and multiply it by lots of other people and eventually you get enough to keep these numbers going upward until it will eventually become a really significant problem.

You're right though...

That brings in a whole slew of other questions - and I've asked myself many of them...

My wife is a nurse for a local hospital - actually works in a day center/clinic that works with the homeless. I'm more likely to end up with it from her than anything else. Actually not sure if that makes it better or worse if I go.

And look, I'm not trying to turn this thread into THAT.  There's enough here already in the FFA with other threads about this.

I will admit to blowing most of this off when I first heard about it and waiting for things to play out.  That's changed, unfortunately.  I wouldn't judge anyone here for making decisions they feel are right.

But, learning what I've learned and seeing how things have evolved, I hope these things get cancelled so we don't have to make those choices ourselves.  It's a huge inconvenience for lots of us (closing schools, gatherings, sporting events, racing), but there are times when there are other things that are more important.  I think this is one of those times.

Also on the board of a food pantry - we're trying to figure out right now what that needs to look like. Can't really shut down, need to think about the fact that a lot of our volunteers and clients are old and/or have health problems. Pretty crazy world we live in now.

Thanks for your insight and perspective, but I will run again. I understand it may be difficult, but I’ll find a way. I feel like Decaprio in Wolf of Wall Street. “You’re going to need a wrecking ball to get me outta here! I’m not leaving!”

Yep

Although my daughter is doing fantastic, her levels are in the normal range, it wasn't that long ago when she had no immune system.  That's hard to forget.

There will be more races and basketball tournaments.
