Dear Miwok Runners -
We had hoped to wait until April 2, but after discussions with our permitting agencies, and with the shelter-in-place announcement yesterday for all residents in six Northern California counties – including Marin, where the Miwok 100K takes place - it has become unavoidably clear that we cannot in good conscience put on an event that brings people from many different counties, states, and countries into Marin during this pandemic.
Our runners could unknowingly bring COVID-19 into the area, infecting residents and other runners, or could return home to their own communities with it, and infect their families, friends, or essential service providers. Due to the above, as well as the potential risk to the volunteers, staff, and other participants, the 2020 Miwok 100K is now cancelled.
Like you, I am dismayed that we will not be able to gather together for the 25th annual trail celebration that is the Miwok 100K. I will miss greeting each of you at the finish line and hanging that hard-earned medal around your neck. We will all miss hearing about your journey, cheering you on, listening to our volunteers share their stories. And you bet I will miss Devon Crosby-Helms’ café’s best-in-the-universe mac & cheese… But we will put on the race in 2021, and you will be there.
Some people are worried about qualifiers. I hear you. Races that require qualifiers are aware of the problem and are doing their own calculus in that regard. (Go for a good run today and let some of that worry go.)
We will be finding out over the next month what race expenses are recoverable, and what are sunk costs, and let you know by April 17 what sort of refund is possible. Like many ultras, we are not run by a deep-pockets corporation. We’ll also be sharing with you a few ideas on a virtual Miwok, and ways to get some running in despite curfews and quarantines. And don’t forget, you’ve got a lottery bypass for the May 1, 2021 Miwok 100K.
We are ultrarunners. We will weather this and come back even stronger. As a community working together, and as individuals.
Enjoy the trails,
Tia
