they?   :tinfoilhat:

:lmao:   i drink an ungodly amount of water, daily.  i actually work out a lot.  just don't run, because my knees HATE it.  but with the gauntlet thrown,  by some dude i've never met, @bostonfred i have taken my usual, gym rat self, into this place, called the outside.  i'm seeing if i can run again.  need to get that heart rate up somehow!  and!  get in amusing ifights with other people, i've never met.
I would tell you, speaking from experience, to not raise the white flag if your knees start barking. I've had a left knee reconstruction and when I started this journey 8 years ago I had the same concerns. But I've been able to work through it.

I'm sure you know this already, but as you are running pay attention to how your foot is landing. If you are landing mid step or even on your heel, you are going to put a tremendous pounding on your knees. And it expounds if you take long strides.

What helped me is short steps - you almost feel stupid doing it but you end up putting less pressure on your joints. And if you can , try and land on the balls of your feet for awhile just to have a lighter step when you run. It takes awhile to get used to but it does make a difference. At least for me anyway.

I rarely have knee pain anymore, and with all the workouts you are doing there is a good chance you lower half is in pretty good shape anyway.

This is extremely helpful advice for a novice runner like myself.  I never actually even considered the technique in how I run.

Well ####, they're evolving. While I did do a bunch of laps around the block last week, I think that was my last time on a bike until the lockdown is over.

And the net is getting tighter! New rules put in place on running starting today: 1) Cannot be more than 1km from home, 2) for a maximum of one hour, 3) only one time per day (good luck with that one). On your hall pass to leave your apartment/house you also need to start putting the time of day. Using my nerdy math skilz (Thanks Mr. Lee from HS!) , using a 1km radius and 2(pi)r gets me about a 6km loop if I do it right  :nerd:

Boy, this gives me a lot more optimism than I had previously.  I would ❤️ a move to the fall, and would even take an entry in 2021 (though if that meant no lottery, that would suck for 6,000+ other people so I think that’s a very low likelihood).

COVID-19 UPDATE #3

To the Western States community:

We continue to monitor the latest developments regarding the outbreak of COVID-19 throughout the country and the world. As an organization, our commitment to everyone involved with Western States remains the same: We will do everything in our power to put on a race this year provided we feel it can be done safely and responsibly. The situation continues to be extremely fluid and dynamic. The past week alone has seen several states enact strict limitations on businesses, gatherings and the delivery of essential services. Some states and numerous cities, towns and municipalities have implemented “shelter in place” restrictions.

We want you all to know that we are working on race solutions for many of the challenges that are inherent to this time of uncertainty. All options are on the table. We continue to plan for our runners to assemble during the weekend of June 27-28, but realize that we need to be proactive as well. In the event that the coronavirus situation does not improve, we are also exploring the possibility of postponing the event to the fall or guaranteeing a spot in the 2021 race for all 2020 race entrants. We are approaching our May training weekend in the same manner. We are hopeful the training runs will be held, but are also looking at options such as consolidating the training weekend or adjusting their place on the calendar in the event we choose to postpone to the fall. We are also aware of the community’s concern regarding qualifiers for Western States. We have a committee tasked with exploring a number of options that we hope will demonstrate fairness and an equitable understanding of how the 2020 ultra calendar has been thrown into disarray because of COVID-19.

The past few days have also brought into sharp relief what a world dealing with coronavirus looks like. People throughout the world are doing all they can to minimize contact with others, to practice social/physical distancing and to avoid large gatherings. We ask that in order to stay ahead of the curve that you continue to be aware of the latest US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines in order to ensure your health and safety and the health and safety of those around you. For our international runners, this means that you understand and are following any public health restrictions or guidelines that are in place in your particular country; for runners in the United States, please abide by shelter-in-place requirements or restrictions on movement if your state or city has implemented them.

Our goal in this unprecedented time remains the same. We will do everything we possibly can to keep our community safe, and to hold our race in 2020. We will continue to update you and be as transparent as possible as we figure out the best path forward for our runners and community. Thank you for your patience and trust in these unsettling times.

Sincerely,

Craig Thornley, Race Director

I'd have to be a Dum Dum to mess up the first pick.

1.01 @MAC_32

Without a doubt, the best runner in the thread at these distances.
Oh man, I read that he's had nagging gut issues.  Are you sure about this?  Worst part is that you could put him in your starting lineup and halfway through the event he's got to stop at some garbage can to take a ####.  You've already set your lineup then and can't go with one of your backups.

Also, what if this C19 business limits the supply of dum-dums?  Another risk.

You think this is chalk, but I'm seeing tons of risk here.

I don't know if it would change your picks because we're civilized and aren't subjecting Team @Otisto a playground humiliation ritual to make our teams but please consider the following events if you are so inclined:

1 mile

5k

10k

Rowing (distance tbd)

Planking

Drinking

Drunken rowing (distance tbd)

Drunken planking

Pinball

Business ethics

Thanks

Captain Fred

Technically, my scheduled marathon during the 10K window has not been cancelled yet. That risk is greater than anything else. Of which dum-dum's ain't one of them. I bought one of those 200 packs when my supply from christmas ran low. Dum-dum's may not survive the corona, but I've at least bought myself some time should I need to find an alternative.

You reap what you sow. And when I DNF the 10K and you lose because of it @gruecd will hold this loss over your head...forever.
This is going work out like the Browns signing Terrell Owens

The ripple effect of the race cancellations will be interesting.

Howa your training going?

OK, I'm going to make my first pick, and then I likely won't be back on here until tonight sometime.  Please take the opportunity to give me your suggestions for 2.02.  With no further ado...

1.02  @pbm107

High risk, high reward.  He's got 3+ weeks to recover from the 'rona, and assuming no lingering lung damage, I'm confident that he'll be neck and neck with @MAC_32 throughout the contest.

He's a solid pick and I think the right call.  He's quiet in his training but lethal with his speed. I think deep down, he wants to exemplify to @Juxtatarot that it was a mistake to pass him over.

Who is the likeliest to go 2.01?

With @Juxtatarot's luck, you'll make a wrong turn on your own course.

I may slightly disappoint in the 5K, but I should be ready to go for the 10k and mile.

I was hoping he'd slip to the second round due to virus concerns.  Great pick.

I'm not sure who I'm picking next.  I have some meeting this morning and since Grue won't be back until evening, I'll mull this over and research a bit before picking.

I'm sure we can easily amass a group here to beat you guys in these challenges.  Fire up a new thread so we can discuss this on neutral turf and we'll get the planning started.

2.01  This guy is fast, he's good at geometry, and he's got nothing else to do right now besides run.  With the third pick in the 2020 FBG 10K draft, je choisis @Harris.

Oh man, that would be intense.  Make each H2H racer start at the same time and wear a GoPro. Livestream the two at the same time.  Get some two way audio going so your team can cheer you on and provide updates on how far ahead/behind you are.  Taking this thing to the next level.
H2H would be fun - could be a portion of the scoring.

Again...K.I.S.S.
Well, we could still have match-ups.  This is like my HS tennis team.  You rank players 1 .. N to match-up to the other team.  Then you would score the h2h match-ups for points.

We could also do this for the teams.  Whats interesting about this from a coaching standpoint is you can put slow people 1 and 2 and move down your strongest runners.  The purpose being to lose #1 and #2 but have a better chance to win 3 .. N.

Its KISS for me, but YMMV

You're bringing back memories. We used to game plan like this for swim meets. Not pure ranking, but based on events.

Somehow I was generally the sacrifice, got my ### kicked a lot, with a lot of 3rd place finishes.
