Ran a 10k - Official Thread (13 Viewers)

TeamJuxt - You guys need to drink more water or something, cuz there's a whole lot of salt in your bloodstream... ;)

When I was looking to make a draft pick, I remember being really surprised at his predicted 5K time.  “Surely he’s faster than that,” I thought.  I almost picked him regardless. But then I thought about how wise and sensible he always is — not only about running and fitness in this thread but about everything else I’ve read him discuss in various threads on this site over the years.  If I can’t take the word and wisdom of someone like Oz, then who can I trust? So I passed.

Well, needless to say, that’s the last time I listen to that guy!
Yeah, no way I'm anywhere near that time, and I'm in the same draft slot.  With that time, @-OZ- has to be SOTD.

Rest day today.  Naproxen tonight.  Running tomorrow morning.

Can anyone help a Strava newbie out. I was just assuming I’d stop my Garmin Fenix at 3.1 miles.  Upload to Strava.  Done.

But I’m noticing the mileage in Strava differs.  For example, my last outdoor run was 7.05 miles but it’s showing up in Strava as 7.21 miles. I assume the Strava app/softwarw is calculating the distance separately?

So, how do I hit 3.1 exactly when it’s loaded into Strava?

I just stopped my watch when I saw 3.11, but I don't usually see differences that large usually Strava is 0.01 short for me.

That's unexpected.  My Strava distance always matches my Garmin distance, except that Strava will round-down to the nearest 10 metres vs Garmin doing more traditional rounding.  Did you have a GPS hop somewhere in your run (where the fix went off your path for a bit)?  Maybe Garmin is correcting for that but Strava isn't.

Not sure, to be honest.  Sounds like I should be good to go to stop my watch at 3.1+ and it should be pretty dang close in Strava.  Thanks!

Same here. I’m stopping at 3.11 and that’s that. I got grassroots and that better be good enough.

I think it depends on where you are running as well and the quality of the GPS signal. Are you in a city? I usually have some differences as I have lots of building around. Yesterday Strava said 7.22km but Garmin said 7.10km.

Man that drives me nuts.
Strava always rounds-down.  If you're at 4.99km, Garmin will show "5.0" on your watch, but you're not actually there yet.  So you have to add a bit to be sure.

In my case, I just have to wait for my watch to beep, then I know the actual distance has hit 5.0km and not just the displayed distance.

My Garmin data just gets swept to Strava.  There might be a difference of .01 miles due to rounding or something.  I think Strava also will sometimes cut out time if I'm stopped.

I don't think Suunto rounds up while in the activity but maybe I'm wrong?

I find it happens sometimes with time from the bike trainer. I'll ride 45 minutes but Strava sometimes shows 43:32 or whatever. As if it didn't believe I was actually riding part of the workout.

Not sure how it applies to the bike trainer, but Strava will always remove motionless time from your calculations (stopped at a crosswalk, stopped to poop, etc) unless you log the activity as a "race".  That's why on training runs you'll see "moving time" and then on the web you'll also see "Elapsed Time".

Hmmm, I'm not moving much anyway and it's set to bike trainer. Could be those are times I'm adjusting myself 🤔

You guys are all doing longer (~3K) warmups for your race.  I was planning on just 1K, but now I'm rethinking that.  Coach @Juxtatarot, any thoughts?
Listen to your body. If you're tight take a little longer to warm up then a little longer between stopping and getting started - maybe do a little more stretching than planned. If you're loose and limber then you don't need much of a warm-up. Just ####in' go, man. My PR (by 25 seconds!) was on nothing more than a couple of stride outs.

Take a picture of the watch time if it doesn't upload to strava correct.

What have you had success with in other races?  I personally like about 3K.
Never actually raced a 5K before.  Had an untimed charity 5K where I went out for a PR and got it.  For that one, I ran 16K to the race.  But that's when I was the most BMF version of my running self.

For my one and only 10K race, I did do a 2K neurostim.

All of my other timed races have been HMs or longer.  And I generally don't warm up for those.

I think you should do at least 3K then.
