Ran a 10k - Official Thread (6 Viewers)

Just left my appointment. Doctor said, you’re good to go! Knee looks strong, start slow. We talked for about 15 minutes and he answered all my questions. He seemed to be extremely knowledgeable and really understood my lifestyle. It’s nice to have a doctor that seems to genuinely care. A little bit of bad news, we locked eyes at the end, he extended his bare hand with a smile on his maskless face. I couldn’t help myself, I extended and we embraced in the most solid handshake I’ve had in all my 33 years. So, I start running tomorrow, but I may have that Rona. Absolutely giddy to complete my 1-2 miles in the morning. Leggggo TeamGrue!
 ❤️

a Dr that gets it is so huge. When my IM training was literally pulling the bones apart in my feet, it took 4 podiatrist visits before I found the right one.

some tips I learned from that...

-if the waiting room is full of old ladies...this is not the Dr you are looking for. Every one of those Drs said...ok, easy- shut all that running and biking down for a few months (IM was a few months from that point).

my ultimate guy was a multiple IM and marathon racer, and his first words to me were...well, I know you're not shutting this down, so let's get you across the finish line without destroying your feet.

Wow. Between that and Oktoberfest already cancelled I do wonder if I should even be training for Paris in October at all! Jeez...
Generally speaking, if a race being cancelled will negatively influence you I would not train with that particular race in mind. I get it - having that carrot out there helps get us out the door each day. But try to make shorter term goals instead. It's why I think this race series was such a great idea.

I agree with this and also agree that the race series was a good idea for the short-term goals.

Was exaggerating a wee-bit but would definitely be a bit bummed if I targeted sub-3 and put in seven or eight 20+ mile long runs for Paris to be cancelled. Even if it was though, I think at that point I would make some minor adjustments to the schedule and do my damndest to travel to another race within plus/minus a couple weeks.

I totally relate - exactly where I was about 4-6 weeks ago. Been training since August specifically with a May sub-3/BQ attempt in mind. I had only done one 20 miler, but had done 15 between 15 and 18 miles. I've done some venting about adapting to WFH life with three small humans age 4-9, but in a bass ackwards sorta way that distraction played a big role in that March realization not hitting me as hard as it may have otherwise. I was just too busy to really think about it, so I couldn't be bummed about it.

I'm sure it would have quite an impact.  If the '20 qualifiers roll over - which only seems fair to them - what percentage would still go?  A high percent, I expect.  But then you get the oddity of people shifting up to new AGs ...and runners (like me) who have already got our qualifier for '21.   :loco:    A "benefit," I suppose, to all these cancelled races is that it limits the number of new qualifiers for '21.  If '21 is heavily filled with the '20 qualifiers, there won't be much room for new entrants anyway.

So @Brony, if you overrun your 10K, too ...don't get your hopes up.
Gonna lose a lot of sleep on that one, that's for sure.

Since we're giving updates on bad knees today... After 4 years of thinking that you know your body, the last few months have been strange.  I'm finally off any kind of medical or PT interventions (just me and my tibiofibular arthritis).   I'm not doing anything dramatically different, but my calf muscle soreness/tightness that has persisted for the last few years isn't there.  The bad news is that it's been replaced by just general pain and tenderness right at that joint spot - definitely more bone pain than muscle now.  I know that if I push my mileage eventually my hammy will say 'that's enough' and pop with a minor strain that needs a few days rest.  Already had 3 or 4 of those this year.

So for now, I'm trying to  mix running, elliptical and biking and continously trying to balance joint exertion vs. pain.  All of these activities create some pain for the joint, but running is the worst.  Mind you, I never feel any pain during activity, it's only at rest.  Fortunately, the pain at that joint is still more of a nuisance than genuine 'pain'.  But I'm always guessing at when the hammy will pop - no early indications, so I just have to nurse my mileage and cross my fingers.  I still stretch all of the time and ice it 4 or 5 times a day.

I still should be able to do the 10K even though my mileage never sniffs that on a daily basis.  Given rest days before and after, it ought to be fine.

I have added in push-ups and core stuff this year.  I can do a lot more now than I have since my 20's.

Easy point to point run today and I think I've got this knee thing licked.  Part of me is so aggravated that I didn't figure this out sooner.  And I hope I didn't set myself back too far to get ready for this marathon that may or may not happen.

But there's something to be said for a full reset, so let's go with it.  So glad @JShare87 about to join me back out there.  Let's do this.

Dear Mississippi Running Festival Teams:

It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the cancellation of the Mississippi Running Festival. This was an event born out of necessity last spring during catastrophic flooding in our area, but bringing it to life was one of the most inspiring and community building things we have done at GO! St. Louis.  That makes it even more difficult for me to have to regretfully cancel this year’s event.

I know we all hoped that by late May and early June that we would be out of the woods, but we now know that is not the case.  In addition, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville will remain closed past our event date.  And finally, it is the smart decision to place safety first and avoid gathering with an event of this size (because we all know this event was about FUN and GATHERING!).

Because we are able to cancel this event prior to any planning or purchasing, we are pleased to be able to offer all teams a 100% refund (please allow 2 weeks for processing of refunds). In return, my request for you is simple: please consider coming back next year and supporting this event, telling your friends, and bringing more running friends with you, so that we can all keep the local running community going strong!  Small organizations like ours have been hit hard, but we want to continue to provide you with quality, local events for years to come.

You have all my thanks for continuing to be a part of our community. Keep running, keep moving forward, and I very much look forward to the day when we can all run again together!

With thanks,
:(

In.

This year I was going to have to drop out anyway, given that my top priority is to spend time with my wife once travel restrictions are lifted.  Wouldn't make sense to spend a weekend with some of the coolest dudes on the internet in an epic display of BMFery, unfortunately, when my wife has been taking care of the house and fur-family exclusively in my absence.

But sign me up for next year.

Agree. I wasn't sure getting on a plane in 5 weeks was what I (or my wife) really wanted to do anyway.

Thanks @gianmarco for organizing us. Hopefully next year it can happen. And I definitely want to be there if it does.

On another note, I'm signed up for Boston and Chicago this fall and I'm really thinking neither of them will happen.  I'll wait on booking flights to Chicago until we see how the world comes out of this.  Fortunately, Boston is a drive and all my hotels have no cancellation fee as long as I do it a few days prior.

FWIW, all the airlines have waived change fees through the end of the year, so you can book now (get a cheap fare) and change later if the races don't happen.

gian: "Hey @JShare87!"  Checks his knees.  "2!"

JShare: Checks his own.  "Back at ya!"

Also, is anybody else really struggling to formulate a training plan for this fall given all the uncertainty out there? I’m extremely schedule-driven, so maybe it’s worse for me than others. Like do I even bother focusing on Boston in September knowing it’s probably 50/50 at best? Do I focus on the Last Man Standing event in early October or Monumental in November? Is one more likely to happen than the other? Do I try to cobble together a plan that will somehow get me ready for both?

I swear if I had awesome hair like @JShare87 or @bushdocda I’d be pulling it out right now!
My training plan is the same as it was on Jan 1. No injuries.

... well, now I’m running more and swimming much much much less :(   :(   :(

This.

Funny, I was talking with my wife on our walk last night, about how I have almost no desire to race right now but I really miss the gym and pool.  But at the same time I have no doubt that when I'm at the next race, I'll throughly enjoy it.

Understatement deluxe.

The way all of you guys are carrying on over this gru/jxt race series...I think heads will be asplodimg come first actual physical race day. Nothing left but tiny green globules

So hot this morning.  Almost took my shirt off a few KM in.  But thought better of it.

While my muscles are still feeling the pain from Saturday, my mind is still reaping the rewards.  Both yesterday and today when I crossed the "start line" of my 5K, I smiled and gave myself a few mental pats on the back.

In golf, I don't remember the 17 tee shots I sliced into the woods, I remember the one that went down the middle of the fairway.  That's the one that keeps me coming back.  Saturday's race is having the same effect.  Many thanks to you guys.

Agree! That’s why I run, to continue chasing the highs I’ve felt during it. They may be few and far between, but when they come, they’re amazing.

Also, 70 degrees with 72 percent humidity is approaching glove weather around these parts. Although, it was 62 here this morning. Tighten up!

I'm going to be smart about it, but I don't know if I'm coming down with something - or just ate too much bad food yesterday. I'm on a 46 day streak and have a new record (50) in my sights, so I really just hope a half dozen tacos yesterday was a bad decision.

I read online that "streaks" only require a one mile run.  I subscribe to that.

So one of the assistant principals in one of our school district's high schools was supposed to run Boston for the first time. Apparently a couple of his teacher colleagues set up a route that went by their houses and a lot of the houses of the teachers at his school.

The teachers were out along the route with signs, balloons, aid stations, etc.  Very cool.

Here is the story.

Pretty awesome.

I'm a 3 drink mile minimum subscriber. There is one 2 mile day wedged in there though. Also due to a stomach ailment. So I'm also a subscriber to not following rules. I guess this is why I cheat while racing.

He could free himself of those tacos a few miles in, and feel much better!  Give it a try, @MAC_32!
The area bathrooms don't unlock until May 1. Unfortunately I had to find that one out the hard way a few years ago. By my count the nearest porto potties are about 3 miles away in 3 different directions.

Never forget the basics.

I think I'm gonna go for a trail run this afternoon.  I feel like a little change of pace and scenery will be good for the soul.

Unrelated, if they're going to cancel Boston, Chicago, and all the other big fall marathons, I really just wish they'd rip off the Band-Aid and do it now so we can plan accordingly.

Haven't had any weather complaints here in a while.  Anybody else sick of the wind?  I feel like we've had 20+mph gusts here every day for the last week.  :tumbleweed:

I just ran in snow.
It would probably annoy me in April, but in general as long as accumulations are under an inch or so, I actually enjoy running in snow.  I find it very zen, especially if it's not a particularly windy day.  It's one of the few times I will consider forgoing music.

The bolded. Last week was actual accumulation while this was just flurries, but I still couldn't help but laugh. Locals are preparing us for more before the month is over too. I love winter snow running, but spring snow running can go #### itself.
