Ran a 10k - Official Thread (8 Viewers)

They saw me at miles 2, 6, 11.5, and 15.5 but made their way to the finish after the last run-by. One way or another I had to get there...and dammit my kids aren't going to see me quit.
This is all I needed to see to confirm what I thought I knew about you.

You are a good man and only a GREAT father goes through what you went through to prove something to your kids.  That mental will is from a place of greatness.

I'm sorry your race didn't go well. But the above is pure gold and you and your family won't ever forget that.

Week 14 - 50 miles, 6 runs in about 7.5 hours. Held things together up to last week with big fatigue and all the doubts hitting me. I keyed this week on 10 miles at goal pace and a long run 2 days after. Weather turned lovely last weekend and continued, providing a boost.

Thursday - I cheated and took a couple extra recovery runs heading into this goal pace session. Prior week everything at pace was 🥴, this morning was back on 🤠 .  Let it drift a tad fast and took a picture of it in my body and mind to remember to hold on and let it happen.

Sat- enjoyed an octoberfest party Friday night unscathed and wanted a faster finish 16 miles or 2.5 hours. This got silly as a bridge project on the trail took a chunk out of my normal southerly route to Annapolis. Drove below the impasse and figured I’d loop the Navy stadium a few times to make up for it. Failed to process there was a home football game until I was in the tailgate zone. All I brought was a tutti fruit gel with none to share so I didn’t stick around. Got out of there and looped town and picked up the return back over the bridge and up the hill. Finished this strong and am pleased.

Let’s see how the taper goes, body in a pretty good spot 14 weeks of 16 in the book and my mind a bit better as well. 12 weeks of quality will be a sweet spot for me to try in the future. Will hit a couple reduced volume workouts and follow reduced volume target and get a bit more sleep.

Onward.

@MAC_32 , you didn't hit your time goal and that sucks.  But the effort you put in to finish, despite basically being unable to walk, almost certainly exceeded the effort you would have made with a healthy PR/BQ time.  Sometimes success isn't measured by time, and this is one of those cases.

Wishing you a speedy recovery (both physical and mental -- you sound mentally exhausted) and eager to see more of your BMFery in the future.

Quick Monumental update.  TL;DR version is "I'm probably not coming to Indy, because life".  My best shot at a short explanation below:

Most of you know that I work in DFW and commute to/from Calgary on the weekends.  My wife is in Calgary full-time, for all intents and purposes.  Mostly because of US Immigration reasons, but I won't bore you with the details.

When I took the job in DFW, it was supposed to be 8 months until my wife could get a green card and the ability to move to the US with me (insert 90-day fiance story here).  Well, COVID, and we're now 19 months in, and no green card.

Anyways, my wife hasn't been thrilled with this situation (she only planned on 8 months of this commuting arrangement) and any time I can't come north for a weekend (work, whatever), she is disappointed.

I told her months ago that I signed-up for a marathon in Indy with my e-friends, and she kind of shrugged it off.  She has since forgotten, and I've been waiting for the right moment to remind her.  That was supposed to be this weekend, but I chickened-out (bawk bawk bawk).

The reason I'm reluctant to bring it up with her is because we recently got notification that we have an actual appointment in Montreal for her green card interview, preceded by a medical in Vancouver (yes the only two places each can be done, respectively).

While she's excited about both, she's also stressed about both.  Because of the process and the travel.  And each basically straddles the weekend in Indy (medical before, interview after).  So there's very little chance she's going to want to go to Indy in-between those two, and even less she's going to want me to go without her, and miss another weekend north with her when she's stressed-out.  Especially since I took a boys weekend to London for English & American football just 10 days ago.

So what I'm getting at here is that I'm going to bring it up with her, but I kind of know how she's going to react.  If I was in peak fitness, and this was my one race to get a payoff, I would push it with her.  But you guys know I'm nowhere near peak fitness, and was just planning to come to Indy for social reasons.

So while I haven't canceled the hotel yet, things aren't looking good.  I'll take a shot with her later this week, but I've seen this movie before, and I know how it ends.

I get this completely, gb.

my unsolicited 2c (as a husband of a wife who isn't always the most supportive of my solo endeavors- and not saying that's you here)... pose it much as you've posed here. Hey- I'm signed up for this race with those weirdos. right now, it's secondary to getting our stuff done and seeing you, so I'm ready to write it off. But if you're interested- and again, it's not something that's going to bother me in the slightest if you say no- it would be a fun thing for me to do. If not, go to hell.

or something like that.

Yup, that's the plan.  Pitch it as a fun weekend away/break for us, and then a low-priority thing for me solo.

Maybe if I promise unlimited room-service...

Yep, pretty much this.

And if need be, I'm sure any of us are happy to talk to her.  You just let us know.

Sorry to hear, GB.  Please LMK so I can adjust the dinner reservation accordingly.

Find a high-end salon in Indy.  Book her a luxurious massage for Saturday.  Profit.  :pickle:

@MAC_32, I'm sorry the race didn't turn out like you wanted.  I saw the video of you coming down the homestretch; that did NOT look enjoyable.  Wishing you the best of luck with your recovery and whatever you decide to do going forward.

@Zasada - selfishly, I hope you are in Indy as I'd love to meet.  My dad worked for American Airlines for 35 years so I'm familiar with airplane corporation life.  All that being said, if wife doesn't approve, I completely get it.  Take care of things at home!

@MAC_32 - It's amazing to see you persevere through race day injury. You are incredible talent....much more than me.  If I can get to Boston, then you will certainly get yourself there. The marathon is a beast and I'm thankful for every marathon I have the opportunity to finish. I don't take it lightly. The fact you got to the finish line speaks to your talent and dedication.  Take whatever you can from this experience and build upon it for something in the future, whether its a marathon, ultra or something else. You can be damn sure your kids just watched their dad battle when things got tough....they will take that forward with them. Take your time recovering and I can't wait to see what you do next.

Speaking of making people happy. Winter is here! 62 degrees tomorrow morning! Probably just stick to some cotton gloves tomorrow. Save the thermal gloves and hand warmers for the 50s.
Been thinking a lot about your sneaker purchase. Is there a tracker somewhere so we know what pair you’re on?  Assuming since this went down in July you’ve only used one pair? Or maybe you’re still saving all 9?

The shoes just started coming in yesterday. The Nike factory was closed due to Covid. Strava has a tool to keep track of mile put on shoes. I’ve never really been good about updating it. Maybe I need to start.

Wait, you ordered 9 pairs of shoes???  Why, you found the perfect shoe or something and want as many as possible before they update and stop production or something?

I may have asked this before, and I have no clue regarding the format in which it's delivered, but do any of you guys wanna go in with me on this?

Marathon Legs
Do you mean share the cost?  Yes, I'd be interested in that.  I could patch together a plan, but it'd be helpful to see what McMillan has to say.  I'm surprised that it's a 12-week program.  My desire would be more of a year-round approach.  My thought would be to take the routines and maybe cycle through the process a few times each year.  That's part of my focus for the next few years - core work; flexibility; leg strength; don't die yet; etc.

I'd chip in now as long as I can save the workouts somehow and use them in the spring.

Yes. The shoes in my size were released and sold out in about an hour or two. I purchased as many as I could before they were out. You cannot purchase the shoes anywhere. Also, the shoes I run in last about 250-350 miles. At 50 miles a week, a pair of shoes lasts about a month and a half. I will admit that I also have a problem.

Long-range forecast for Indy looking picture perfect.  32 degrees at 7am with 6mph west wind, and 39 degrees at 11am with 8mph west wind.  This race never fails...

I was just looking at it, almost too good to be true.
This will be my 3rd time running there, and if the forecast holds, I'll be 3/3 with perfect running weather.  Conversely, I've run Boston 8 times, and only once or twice has the weather even been "decent."
