Ran a 10k - Official Thread (7 Viewers)

@pbm107  I'm so happy for you especially since you had some frustrating years despite putting in the training efforts.  This was well earned and I've always been impressed with your mental game -- not only by your approach to training but also in race performance such as with these stomach issues.  Congrats!

@pbm107 - that's an pretty amazing race on so many levels. And pretty much what juxt said above - all the work you put in and then to fight with the stomach stuff.  I can't even imagine what you were thinking: "all this ####### work and a stupid dump is gonna ruin it....."   But then you came out of it and just smoked that race.

Just incredible. Awesome job.

@pbm107 - great meeting you this weekend.  I really had a great time on Friday at the group dinner.

Your race report is fabulous and the wave start/corrals was more chaotic than previous years.  Although the slower start was frustrating, I'm believing that a slow first mile (a warm up essentially) pays huge dividends.  The doctor's in the house may be able to say my thinking has some merit or its just idiocy, however, I think if you start right at race pace, your body is burning energy at a much higher rate because you aren't properly warmed up.  Therefore, doing a slower first mile saves that energy burn and it pays off twofold/threefold/fourfold/etc. later on in the race.

Regardless, awesome race and with the farting,  I had the same experience in NYC yesterday (albeit while running 3 minutes per mile slower).  The challenge with farting as a pacer, you always have people around you.  Thankfully, the crowds were insanely loud, so I just farted like mad when it was really loud.

Week 16 - race week and Indy report

TL/DR - so much fun and PR baybeee 3:25:51

Prelude - Tapered down another chunk of volume. 2 miles at race pace Monday. I almost botched the Saturday race on Tuesday when I overstretched my rights psoas and hip flexor into a left lower back disaster. By Tuesday night it was a concern, Wednesday morning I was encouraged that an easy run didn’t make it worse. Thursday morning I was freaking out when I couldn’t get a PT appt bc it was no better. Found a miracle PT who lives in my neighborhood 🤯 and she fit me in and told me she used to run a PT clinic in NYC for Broadway dancers and that she could get me to the start line. She told me my pelvis wasn’t gliding 🥴 and then pretzeled it into submission.   Said it would keep improving for next 48 hours and the soreness would be from the manipulation not the disfunction. Ok. Got home and closed the browser windows for Richmond and Philly races in a couple weeks. Felt legit better hopping the flight to Indy Friday morn. Walked around a lot Friday and in lieu of a shakeout then met the group for a great dinner hang. The drinks would have to wait.

Slept well and up early race morning, I set off on a walk to loosen up after a hot shower. Feeling good. Jogged it back to the hotel and still feeling good. Missed meeting the group in the lobby as I forgot my icy hot patch and had to go back up. That delightful rectangle of Shaq endorsed chemicals would have to hold me together. Goal of 3:24:xx was adjusted to 3:26:xx with a slight step back to more like 7:50 miles Instead of 7:45s

Got to start corrals after the national anthem and got into the B corral back pretty far due to my lateness. Saw Gian for a quick second and pbm sister a few people over in the corral for a quick ‘we got this’ and we were off.

Pretty crowded back there with a lot of folks by the 3:40 and 1:50 half pacers. Took a while to get going but I wasn’t going to sweat being a bit slower than my planned conservative start. Things opened up after the first water stop (only one I skipped) and in mile 3 I got a bit faster than race pace and felt fine. It was time to settle in and get really boring. It was a cool/cold sunny morning and enough movement of the course to be interesting. Went through downtown, city burb cool houses, solid fans and then back through city and into a park. I just keep lying to myself to hold pace for 10 miles and then assess. I wasn’t working too hard and wanted to sustain. Dumped a long sleeve around mile 5 and was really comfortable in tank/arm sleeves/shorts/calf sleeves/headband. Alternated some watermelon salttabs and roctane along with water stops. Took a side of road pit stop at 14 and was fine on the restart. Now legit I had another 10 boring miles until I decided if I had anything left to press. My back was holding up but I didn’t think I had a sustained push of 10k or even 5k. It would be late and fevered if anything. Hit a caffeine gel around 19 and had another with me. Took that one around 22 something bc why not. I’m passing a lot of folks but still haven’t made it to Kent pacing 3:30 which was perplexing me. I hadn’t looked at watch other than mile splits until sometime in mile 25 and it said 3:17 something.  I had a big PR at my fingertips. I started the press and the super shooz and caffeine took me home. I kicked one turn early and then had the homestretch to further gut out. Saw Kent just as I crossed the finish line and realized he went off in A corral about 5 mins ahead. Sweet lady wrapped me in a moon blanket and I watched the finish a bit so see Mrs G looking great through the home stretch. I then found a soft sunny spot on the grass to chill a bit before shower. Hit me that I had a great result in the warm sun and cool air. So many happy folks, happy to be at a marathon and happy with a gorgeous morning.

Super fun day into night hang with the group. Yesterday and today my back feels like hell but I can rest it and get it figured out as it calms down. Good training cycle and I learned another thing or two along the way. The support is so appreciated, thanks to all.

Ok, so this Boston talk just got me looking at some stuff.

Mrs. GM is now in the 45-49 group.  Her qualifying time for that AG would be 3:55:00 (and the actual accepted times were 3:50:08)

That's an 8:45 pace.

Based on the calculators, with her run yesterday, she could run a 3:43:00 (8:30 pace) marathon.  Which is a pretty big cushion.

However, she's never run a full marathon (just several HMs).

I don't know if I can convince her to go for it, but if so, what would be the timeline/deadline for her to run one and try to get in for 2021 with all of you IDDIOTS?  What are her chances of hitting that mark on her first marathon try?

Where this whole thing all started for us.  Crazy 2 years since.

Also, just deferred Mesa Marathon in February to 2023.  She can take a little break now and then start up in January to get ready for April.  Will actually train together and run lots of hills around here so should be "fun".

@bushdocda it's always cool to see in here the culmination of all the hard work that people put in and then have it pay off on race day.

Congrats and awesome job. You just stuck to the grind and did the work and then crushed it. Love it.

Monument Half Marathon Report

Really pretty bummed that I lacked the mental fortitude and physical preparedness to run the full with a great bunch of folks. Also bummed that my daughter's birthday is tomorrow and that plans worked out that we celebrated with her on Friday evening. Actually I'm happy to have gotten to see the younger daughter and celebrate the older one, just bummed I missed the Friday evening meal.

Pre race, I was up and out the door plenty early, parked and walked to the JW to take a morning dump and then hang out in the lobby a bit, stretch and wait for people to wander in. Got to say hi to everyone and walk over to the start. We were a little later getting over there than I have ever been and getting into the corals was a bit of a challenge with a lot of spectators clogging the sidewalks and such. But, I saw the 3:30 marathon sign and walked over to join it even though I knew I couldn't really run that pace the whole way.

I ran along with the marvel that is @SteelCurtainfor about 3 miles. Got to talk a bit when not trying to weave through traffic but as we neared the 3 mile mark I looked down to see that my HR was already at ~170 so I decided to let him drift off in front of me a bit and I tried to run at whatever felt "comfortable enough" to be able to keep plodding long. That pace started at about 8:15 and slowly deteriorated throughout the day. Normally I do all kinds of math during a run to distract myself and know exactly where I am in terms of goal, etc. This time I still did that a little, but very little. Based on what was kind of comfortable I figured I'd see how close to 1:50 I could be.

I was ahead of that for awhile based on keeping up with steel but that started to fade and the HR stayed in the 170's and 180's but I was breathing fine and legs felt fine enough to just keeping going. Mile splits started at like 8:15 and slowly dropped to 8:20, 8:25, 8:35 but I just kept putting my feet in front of one another. I really was one of those annoying people that start up further than they should but things had thinned out before I started lagging. That meant that I had a nice steady stream of people slowly passing me but they also pulled me along with them.

Official result: 1:51:13

That's about 1 minute per mile slower than my PR but about 90 seconds per mile faster than the first time I ran my first ever HM here in 2018. And it was totally awesome to meet some more of the incredibly inspiring people that make this thread the awesome thread that it is, as well as Mrs. @gianmarco and @pbm107's sister.

I now have a red ribboned I and D with a blue ribboned N. Next year I want the blue ribboned Y to complete the INDY set and I promise to find the "want to" to get it done.

Great reports, guys!  @pbm107, odd that you were so, um, gassed throughout the race, and then @SteelCurtain with the same issue at NYC.
I am not sure what the issue was with me, we were joking about how spicy my pasta dish was Friday night. I didn't do a great job planning my breakfast, ended up with a Clif bar, Gatorade, and some coffee. I ate much better during this training cycle losing some weight, and rarely had GI issues in training. Sort of took it for granted what I needed for my last two meals before the race.

You know, I've been thinking a lot since Saturday... Well, really before that but Saturday through this very minute, it has really struck home about how great this thread truly is. Despite me being a lazy, good-for-nothing when it comes to discipline in training and all, I still had nothing but encouragement and it showed even in my effort out there on the course. This thread makes me want to be better than I am in many, many ways. I'm not sure I'll get there but the motivation and inspiration provided here really is pretty phenomenal. Even if I don't translate that to not being a bum it is still true. Without this thread and this community, the fall off I have had over the last 18 months or so would have been far, far, FAR worse, 100% guaranteed.

@Juxtatarot, how have you been feeling? Making progress?
Thanks for asking. It seems like I’ve made a little progress although it’s hard to tell without running a lot of miles.  I assumed it would take some time so I’m just going to stick with the plan of stretching and strengthening with a run every now and then.

I'd mentioned the name earlier, but I've started incorporating a lot of stretches from Dr. Kristie Ennis, via YouTube.  She has a lot of short videos for all sorts of issues and body parts (and speaking of which, she's easy on the eyes).

I posted a while back about my brother, who was running the NYC Marathon as his first marathon ever while on the cusp of turning 58.  Well, he completed it!  His time was...well, let's not go into that and just say it was kinda dark when he crossed the line.  But he was solid and even had a nice kick at the end.

Thanks to this thread, I was able to give him some great advice such as...no wait, he already knows everything so I didn't bother to try.  I've learned a lot from this thread, though!

Congrats to your brother! NYC was absolutely amazing on Sunday.

Updating my OCD excel file with 2022 race dates and potential race options is my kind of recovery. It’s like hair of the dog.

Doing much of the same this morning, but my races are pretty much locked in through May. I don't think I'll be following a formal training schedule this spring, with races scheduled every 4-5 weeks I'll probably just try to maintain a decent weekly mileage with one workout a week plus a longish run.

Looking forward to your races next year.  You just finished a marathon in 2:54 with a tornado interrupting training followed by excessive gas and vomiting on race day.

All of you guys kicked ### this weekend and being down in Indy this weekend really made me want to get back on the horse to join in on the fun. Had no running scheduled for 2022 but it just so happens that there is the F3 (####### freezing frozen) Half Marathon on the lakefront on January 29. Signed up as of this morning and let's see how far I can take it over the next 12 weeks!

@tri-man 47, you interested?

Um ...sure!  I'm about to sign up for a Turkey Trot HM on 11/27 as a motivation to keep up my mileage so I can hit 2,000 miles this year (first time ever, I'm quite sure ...I'll have to check my stone tablets).  This will ensure I keep pushing through December.

Anyone that writes and performs amazing songs like you do is far, far more than a "mascot". I am offended for you at being referred to as such. You are the glue that holds this thread together, IMO!
I am pretty good at songs.

Thank you kind sir.   :banned:
