Similar to losing the laugh emoji, the Garmin performance score kind of bugs me. It hits early in a run and I’m almost certain to be waking up or warming up. Why does it read so early, weird.

From the Garmin site.
The Performance Condition metric is a real-time assessment of your ability to perform compared to your average fitness level. This metric ranges from -20 to +20 with each point representing approximately 1% of the VO2 Max set on your device. During the first 6-20 minutes of an activity the device will alert you to your current Performance Condition. This can also be used as an indicator of fatigue level, especially at the end of a long activity. Performance Condition is calculated using the following:

Running:

Pace

Heart rate

Heart rate variability

I don’t think my watch has this.  I just get told if my recovery was good, fair or poor about 10 minutes into my run.

i'm really going to have to get back to running more regularly and then come in here and start posting up a storm or something. this thread is surprisingly slow these days.

for the record, I'm still old and now I'm getting fat again. I did run twice in one week last week so there's something... what are you people up to?

Nursing a bad hamstring and trying not to clog this thread up with bad news, but you're right - the silence is deafening in here this winter.

Happy Valentines Day!

Did I botch the race calendar doc or are y’all seeing it with a 2022 sheet?

My training, travel and planning lookin like Charley from Sunny at this point.

I'm running, like, 3-4 times per week!  But tomorrow is three months from a scheduled HM, so it's time to start gearing up again after a deliberate lull.

Sorry to hear this.  Sucks not seeing your runs as frequently on Strava.  Can't wait to see you healthy and back to full speed.  Need to hear about new dum-dum flavours.

Thanks - I am probably being overly cautious, but there's no upside to finding out I'm wrong the hard way right now. The culprit was likely 800 repeats early this month as those 2 workouts were the first of that sort since September. It's still tight, but while speed would be a bad idea it's not discomfort. It feels the same now as it did before yesterday's jog and more importantly - during. Hopefully the only negative outcome that results is simply just no racing this spring.

Same x2!  Cheers everyone!!  :hifive:

Hey!  I'm the guy who LOVES summer running and hates winter running.

Where are all those summer complainers? This is your chance to shine!  All those posts about loving cold running so much better than warm running.....where are those runners?  :pokey:  :P

In all seriousness, I'm not aware of any spring races on the books, so I'm not sure people are training for anything of substance. If I'm wrong, please correct me!

I'll be running Boston (mid April) but only for fun.  So, just trying to keep myself upright and not gaining too much weight (nearly 18 pounds gained since my London PR in October. :hot: ) I'll probably run 3:45 in Boston or just run with @gruecd and @gianmarco's better half.

Hadn't even considered this. And my aversion to winter running after marathon training through 2 straight has certainly played a role in my conservative approach. Gonna make sure to take advantage of today's mid 50's weather, but part of that is because of what's happening the next 2 days. What was 3' of snow with 5' drifts has melted to about 6" with 2' drifts, but that's all gonna flood with Thursday's day long down pour then all that water is gonna freeze when temps crater Friday.

Well cold running is way better than warm running!  18C/64F this morning with high humidity for the first time in a while.  Definitely noticed.

But I'm not complaining.  After spending much of last summer unable to run due to injury, I realized that hot running is better than no running.  So I might note the heat in the future, but won't complain!

I'm registered for the Vegas R&R HM at the end of this month.  If I can stop eating like complete ####, get a couple pounds shed, and get my gut in a place that I don't have to #### twice on every run, I'm hoping for a solid PR.

I'm registered for a half in April.  I plan on running it but it's gonna be a slow jog just so I can say I haven't missed the starting line of any race I've signed up for.

It might take me three hours, but it's gonna get done.

I'm hurting bad guys. I've already alluded to the neck issues - the pain is getting worse down both arms, right leg, hips, everywhere.  To complicate matters my wife (who carries our insurance) just switched jobs, so I'm waiting until we get our new insurance that starts March 1 so all of our 2022 deductibles apply to the same spot to keep things simple.

So I get to suck it up til then and run when I feel decent. On the bright side my wife got a new job at a company where she really wants to be. They've been after her for a year and they finally brought an offer that is a substantial raise and position. So that's a good thing. Kids are doing well so I have no complaints other than my stupid pain in the neck.

:sadbanana:

well that sucks.  Sorry that you are going through that.  Hopefully there is a path to recovery starting March 1.

I hear you on the navigating slippery roads.

Before I moved, I had to often drive so I could run in safe (from ice and snow) areas.  Fortunately, where I live now, I can almost always run, but I have to sometimes choose my routes carefully.  Another reason to hate winter running as doing tempo and interval workouts around black ice is not a good scene.  Its nice that its not a consideration since I just do mostly easy runs these days.

Ohhhhh...almost race time.  This should be fun to watch and hopefully they have solid tracking so we can cheer for you from our warm snow covered homes!  What's your HM PR?

And I'm with you, my GI track is all messed up.  I'm running this afternoon but I'm choosing a route that keeps me close to toilets as its quite unpredictable these days.

Ugh.  The neck is tricky.  Hope you get it straightened out (literally) in a couple weeks.  I'm so happy wife and kids are in good spots.  There is an internal joy when those most important in your life are happy.

Yup a week from Sunday.  PR is 1:41:59.  Aiming for <100, and if all goes well I think I should do a minute or two better than that.  But if my gut acts-up, then all bets are off.

Positive spin, thanks to climate change I am increasingly optimistic the window for this level of sustained poor conditions has closed and will continue to only close more. Sure, we get impactful winter storms as early as Nov and as late as April, but in recent years the sustained inconvenience generally only lasts beyond a couple days at a time from mid Jan-mid Feb, give-or-take. During this time period safe running routes don't exist (only marginally safe routes and certainly not at all times) because there is too much snow piled up everywhere. But that all changes once we melt like we are now. Yeah, probably can't run outside for about 48 hours or so, but it'll be sunny and 50 by Sunday. That's a sorta winter I can navigate around here.

Not on the calendar, but I have a HM in just over 9 weeks.  I've managed to get the runs in thus far despite some volatile weather and scheduling issues.  My left foot is acting up a bit again, which was my main concern when I upped the mileage as it has reared its head the last two HM cycles.  Hopefully it stays manageable.

For the neck (once March arrives), have you tried acupuncture, if insurance will cover it?
I have not.  I know already I have a degenerative disc in there. But something has changed over the last year or so. So that's what I need to figure out.

I may sign up for some yoga classes for the next few weeks just to try and loosen things up.

I've mentioned (and you've noted) some videos from Kristie Ennis.  Also, Bob & Brad are knowledgeable and rather entertaining.  Maybe something in this mix will help, at a minimum, to loosen things up ...an at-home alternative to the yoga classes.

I’m firmly on team hot is better than cold, but today’s 60 degrees and sunny and humid run was a bit of a shock to the system.  It’s amazing how the acclimation wanes over time.

@pbm107 destroys his 5-miler and not a word of it here?!?

Need the details!

Sorry I haven’t been too active on here, I’m having a tough time getting motivated with my training. Yesterday was my 2nd fastest time on this course which is encouraging. I kind of surprised myself how well I ran the first 4 miles, kind of fell apart the last mile which was mostly trail.
Hopefully this will jumpstart my training, but life has gotten busy as my wife went back work full time and I have had to pickup the slack at home.

Not much new to report from me.  Not running much right now as I try to navigate through this foot thing.  I'd scheduled an MRI just to get a definitive diagnosis, but then I canceled it, and now I've rescheduled it for March 7.  Regardless of what they say, I'll probably continue trying to alternating days between running and Peloton through early summer and then shut it down for a bit when I don't want to run anyway because it's hot as balls.  It's just annoying because it's not so bad that I can't run or that I feel like I need to 100% shut it down, but it's bad enough that I can tell that something isn't right.  The other thing is that I'm just way more concerned right now with working out consistently and getting back into peak shape than I am with "running," per se.  I don't know if my priorities have changed or if the nagging foot thing is affecting my mood or what, but the "why" just isn't strong enough to get me out there doing 2- or 3-hour training runs right now.

On a much more positive note, our little girl turns 14 months old today.  She's speeding around the house getting into absolutely everything.  She's long and lean, and her height is literally off the charts, which is no surprise given me being 6'4" and my wife 5'11'.  Anyway, it's amazing how time flies...

Been a rough 6 weeks at home with weather and other stuff just crushing my time. Got a run in yesterday and today on vacation and then got an alert that canyon had some bikes in stock. A loose wallet on vacation basically forced me to buy a real triathlon bike.  Might have to actually do a triathlon now.

@gruecd. remind me (us) what the foot issue is?

And: Great to see your little girl growing up!  (Too fast, right?)
Soreness around the base of my 2nd metatarsal.  Ultrasound on January 26 showed two "very small" plantar plate tears, but cortisone shot didn't help, which leads me to believe that those might actually not be symptomatic and something else might be causing the pain.  Thus the MRI.

And yeah, way too fast.

I wonder if this may be the case with a lot of us in here right now. I say this from a relatively uninformed perspective though. I've been disengaged from most things running since October and haven't kept as updated on what most others are doing as I had been up to that point. I'm not just speaking about this community too - noticing the same locally. But again, it may just be me since I know racing is not a consideration before at least late summer/early fall and that is certainly impacting my involvement.

We do seem to have a particularly high number of walking wounded around these parts lately.

If we could at least get @El Floppo healthy and running again, he could amuse us with tales of bear attacks in the boroughs.

Did you end up shipping that hundy to your friend?

I should've been checking in here... I have an old, but rock-star Quinta-Roo Typhoon (titanium) with full Dura-Ace and Zipp 404s just gathering dust in my storage locker.

Missed my long run on Saturday for the first time in months.  I developed a head cold on Friday, and I usually try to keep running unless I'm can't get out of bed sick, but I thought the 30mph was maybe a sign that it wasn't a good idea.  Might have been for the best as my foot had been pretty cranky on Thursday.  Got back out Sunday and Monday, but the longish run Monday really put me on the mat so I took a zero day yesterday to give my body time to finish off the illness.  Today's run felt decent, so hopefully I'm nearing 100% and can get back on the mileage train.

Haven't heard much from the monocled canine lately, but he seems to be putting in the miles - hopefully his training is going smoothly.

:lmao:

My job that I started I'm November is in full swing and since the start of the year they are letting me spread my wings and take on a lot more responsibility.  I'm navigating that (and 10,000 kids activities) with my training and have been able to stay on track.  Although, the weather and work commitments have me moving runs around throughout the week.

I'm only a couple weeks in to my HM training, but am on track.

Go on…

I’m leaning towards keeping my old bike on the kickr and getting an upgrade.

Surprised to see there hasn’t been more action in here lately but totally understand (and I’m in much the same boat). Life is busy, priorities change a bit with kids and what-not.
I’ve been enjoying zwift, although I know I’m not using it to it’s full potential.

i think I’m only racing a few times this year and the focus is definitely on health.  I’m steadily just over 190 lbs and feel great about it. I had been just over 200 at the start of 2022.  if I wanted to prioritize racing I’d probably need to drop another 10-20 lbs. I’ve been trying to get in to the health clinic for a body assessment but they’re either closed or I’m calling at bad times.
