and for the record... you broke me last time around on this challenge! Mostly because I was stupid and tried to go from 0 to 100 at the start. This time around I've been doing some push ups but not enough and not consistently enough to risk doing 100 a day again right now but this will be good to get back into a more regular habit.
That’s the whole point! 🙃

“Hypothetically” - if you’re feeling good overall and doing different workouts, is there any harm in Not taking a day off?

just looked at February, 36 hours with no off days. January also had no off days. Last time I didn’t have something in strava was Christmas. I’m feeling fine, and between run, bike, swim, and weights I’m getting a fine variety and my legs aren’t destroyed.

I love my rest days.

Honestly I’ve found they mess with me mentally. Could be that my “office” is literally 4 feet from my bed and if it wasn’t for a workout I wouldn’t be doing anything other than working and parenting.

I think as long as you're working different muscles, a "no off day" approach is fine.  I use weights (upper body) day as my running "off" day, and it definitely recharges my legs for the next day when I run again.

Almost sounds like you’ve got a healthy lifestyle going there.

What Z said. The important thing is to listen to your body when it eventually tells you it needs a day off - whether something aches or just general fatigue. I don't recall my longest stretch of consecutive exercise, but it's longer than my run streak (50some days) and pales in comparison to juxt.

Thanks guys!  My third time running this race, and every time it seems to squeeze more out of me than I thought I had.  Almost a 10-minute PR.  Will write a quick RR tomorrow on my flight home!
 @gianmarco "TWSS" / @gianmarco

Fantastic race, @Zasada !!!  Don't feel you need to explain your high placement in the race stats.  Placing that high in such a large race is a noteworthy accomplishment.  Your training commitment certainly paid off.  Very happy for you!!!

In.

Work schedule is starting to open up, finally, after what was a three-year grind driven by academic research requirements. (Despite all the work, my ####### dean did not support my current tenure application, although I was able to submit a rebuttal letter.  I'm pretty sure the faculty appointments committee supported my app with a recommendation for tenure, but oddly/stupidly, they can't tell me, so I'm waiting in limbo for a handful of weeks until I get word from the president.)

Do we have a push up sheet link?

I knocked out a set of 40  :coffee:

(probably will need to take tomorrow off)

I'm in - won't be doing 100 a day, especially not the beginning. But will definitely use this to help get me back on track.

I badly need this, so I’m in.  That said, I was worried about whether my arms would fall off after day 3.  Sounds like I maybe shouldn’t go for the 100 x 31 days?  Rather, ease into 100 per day?

Any veteran advice would be greatly appreciated.  😬

I highly recommend easing into it. Last time around I had not really be doing that many push ups, or hardly any weight work for that matter. Figured how hard could push ups be if I just broke them into small sets... well, after about day 2 or 3, I spent several weeks with my left arm/shoulder feeling like absolute crap. took quite a while to get it back to 'normal'.

I've been doing sit ups for the last few weeks. So I think I'll go a plank/sit up challenge again.

6 weeks til my half marathon. Should probably start training. At this point I'm going to use the @BassNBrew plan I think.

that's like a lifetime or something based on my 'training' for the last 2 HMs I ran...

One way:

test yourself in day one. See how many you can do in one set.  That’s “X”

Day 2 - do half of X.
Day 3 on - add 10% or 5 to the previous day. When you hit 100, either keep increasing or don’t.

so if your day one max is 40, Day two is 20. Might seem easy, that’s okay.  If you add 5 each day, you’ll hit 100 on day 18.

Don't do sets to exhaustion for the first few days.  If it has been awhile, try doing 5-10 per set and spread them out during the day.  You could use having to get upto pee as your trigger to knock a few out.

Killing yourself day 1 will ruin you on day 2 or 3.

PS: the whole idea of a “challenge” is that it’s supposed to be difficult.

If it was easy it would be called your mom.

Thanks guys.  So is this 100 per day supposed to be one set, multiple sets, or either?  I did multiple sets (and variations) yesterday to get over 100.  That’s what I was planning on.  If that is “cheating,” let me know and I’ll revise my total from yesterday to reflect my max set.  👍🏼

However you want to get to 100.

Personally, I think the easiest way to get there is just to mark the spreadsheet.

However you wanna do it.  I generally do sets of 20, but sometimes I'll do as few as 10 at a time, or as many as 30.

I started with sets of 20 as well.  Early on, those can be spaced apart (e.g., one set during a commercial break).  Later, they can be done with just a short break in between.  The nice thing with smaller sets is you're more likely to keep good form - elbows staying in; stiff form ("TWSS").  As I settle in, I'll often finished with a set of 10 where I make a diamond shape with my thumbs and index fingers, which really works the triceps.

As many as you can do per set with as minimal rest in between is how they're most effective. There's the not getting injured and doing them with proper form variables that need accounted for though.

Hi everyone! It's been a long time since I posted in this forum.  Short version: I used to run a lot and then I got old and arthritic and I no longer run a lot.  I still run when I can, which varies depending on what ailment I'm dealing with at the time.

My Garmin Forerunner 225 just finally crapped out.  I am thinking I don't need to replace it, that surely there must be iPhone apps that can handle my needs now, especially since I'm not training for any races or worried about pacing or heartrate etc.

Do you guys have any recommendations?  Just something to track my mileage and pace.  It could be very simple.

Long story: I loved being a part of this group and several others online that were dedicated to running.  I ran 12 marathons between the ages of 44 and 50.  About six or seven years ago my online running presence got to be problematic.  In two other online running groups I had some disturbing incidents. In one group, I was stalked online by another group member who had apparently been smitten by my online persona. This person did some very weird things and sent threatening messages to my wife.  In the other group I became aware that one member was engaged in some extremely psychotic behavior online, essentially committing fraud and pretending to be multiple different people.  My wife was completely freaked out about these incidents and asked me to disengage from all my online groups.  She was especially concerned about things like having my running routes displayed online through Strava and the possibility that one of the online crazies could access the info, including my home address.  The other groups were on Facebook, so my whole life was basically on display there for any and all internet loonies. So I left those groups and this one too, although the only crazy in here is how many miles some of you run.

All those things appear to be in the past now, so I feel safe to be back in here, although I'll still attempt to be pretty private.  I have been told I am going to need two new knees someday, and one new hip. Who knew cartilage was a thing?  I also have arthritis in one of my big toes. I go through joints like Snoop Dogg visiting Willie Nelson's tour bus.  I run when I can (12 miles last week), and still enjoy it when I'm not dealing with an injury.

I see lots of old friends are still in here.  I hope you are all doing well!! I missed you guys!

Welcome back!! How you doin.........

By the way, that was a joke. I know you've posted about that before and know it was a serious situation. So not trying to make light of THAT.

Just trying to have some fun on an otherwise weird time of life and history.

And welcome back  :)

Hard to resist an old man in running shoes.  Amirite?

Welcome back, @worrierking!!  Sorry about all the weirdness in those other threads. Interest in your daily poop cycle is about the extent of our intrusive behavior.

We do have enough walking wounded here to keep you company these days.

Welcome back! CRAZY stories about this online thing.

We only have @gianmarco stalking @gruecd around here.  Or maybe it was the other way around.  :brush:

Goodness on the stalking. Was going to say just run strava app through your phone - I think they’ve added privacy/route stuff so maybe that would work. Or an app like runkeeper (no experience with it).  Stop being so interesting and attractive. Works for me.

Welcome back @worrierking!  Sucks that you had to go through that garbage.  Around here, you might wanna be cautious about sharing your HR data.  Lots of inquiring minds.

Hope your knees keep going!

I just start/stop my runs in front of the senior residence center down the street.  With Strava-stalking over time, it's given everyone the impression that I'm some old dude.

It’s prettier in person.  It showed up with some of the wrong components, they offered a full refund and ship it back or a $500 credit, I asked for $1000 and we settled on $750.  Just finished getting it in the trainer and about to test it out.

Welcome [back] worrierking!

Speaking of strava, I just dropped by to post that for the first time ever I am [temporarily] on top of the leaderboard.

:bowtie:

Waiting for one of these maniacs to go on a 2+ hour run

is that lump/box on the top tube behind the stem a place to stash your drugs? or is it to go into stealth anti-radar mode?

I feel like an absolute dope linking my 15yo bike now... your new ride is completely filthy.

eta: and you need to post some pics of it. are you going to sleep with it?

I wouldn't have let the achilles get the better of me if I'd known that.

Watch out for Steve and @Zasada

Pretty sure you need to put up 90 minutes a day, for the rest of the week, to hold on.

Yes if you go to the main club page there's a top 10 by hours of activity.  I very rarely even make the board.

Steps needed for me to be at/near the top:

1. Exercise way more than usual

2. Steve takes a week off

3. None of the tri-guys training in earnest

4. High mileage guys nursing injuries or coming immediately off of races

I was in the driver's seat last week until Steve and Zasada both run a Sunday night half marathon.

Not that I'm looking or anything.
