Ran a 10k - Official Thread (1 Viewer)

Just read a study:

Men completed 56.69 cycles/3 min and women – 48.84/3 min on average. The best male participant completed 82 burpees, and the best female participant – 73 burpees. The majority of male and female participants (66.71% and 68.18%, respectively) were characterized by average strength endurance in the 3‐Minute Burpee Test (range of scores: 47‐66 and 37‐60 cycles/3 min, respectively).

:kicksrock:

Edit - it seems these are without push-ups. Burpees in the Army always included push-ups, so I’ll do it that way.
FYI, I'm doing them with the push-up, too. Just gotta clean up the technique of it all.
It’sa challenge for sure. I got sloppy towards the end the first day.

Phil’s Tavern 5K

I’m in the third week of marathon training and instead of running my 5 mile tempo I decided to race this local 5k that I try to do every year. It’s the race that used to be a quarter marathon and I usually win a pie.

Originally I didn’t have high hopes or this race since in the past the course has been short so I wasn’t going to taper for the race. Well on week 2 marathon training while on vacation, I started experiencing some knee pain so I took 2 days off. I also didn’t complete my MP workout because the weather sucked all last week. As I am getting ready to start week 3 of training with the knee feeling better, I saw that the course was modified for the better and the weather forecast looked good for Wednesday night. My PR of 17:22 was set just over a month ago, so I decided I was going to be aggressive and attempt sub 17 (5:28 pace).

It’s a fast start, but not out of control. I have raced with the leader before I knew he was capable of running sub 17 but not much faster than that. After 400 meters I am in the top 5 feeling fairly comfortable, as the start is on the loop where I do all my tempo runs. Just before the 1 mile marker I see my daughter cheering me on, I must have got a bit excited as I immediately pass the top masters runner and am now in 3rd place. I get to the 1 mile marker at 5:24, I am thinking this is the day I am going to do this. I see that I am catching up to the 2nd place runner who a younger runner and I am still feeling good as I cruising down the only real hill on the course.

As we both made a left turn into a slight incline I started really being impacted by the heat, the suck index was only 128 but the sun was out. We were both slowing down but on the hill before the 2 mile marker I passed the kid for 2nd place. In the third mile as I approached the area where my daughter was cheering I felt like I had company, the masters runner and the kid were on my heels. I wish I had more fight in me as the masters runner passed me, and I did my best to stay in front of the kid. With about a half a mile to go a different kid flew past me and he was able to overtake the masters runner and finish in 2nd. I felt more competition behind me but was able to hold them off to take 4th overall, 5 and 6 were 3 and 4 seconds back.

My watch had me at 17:20 with a distance of 3.07, this effort is faster than my 5k PR but I’m not going to count it since it was short. The official time was 17:14, but that isn’t right, I’m not sure why it is off so much. Fun competitive race with the back and forth, winning time was 16:55 and 6th place was 17:18. The masters runner that beat me, has some real talent, ran a 2:39 marathon back in 2018. I took home a peach pie, they were all out of apple by the time I got my award.

My 12-year-old son ran this race with me, and a year ago he ran a 5k in 30:46, he finish in 24:37 yesterday. First time that he wore a watch racing, 199 HR average with a max of 211. He is signed up for cross country this fall.

A little bit of redemption, tri style this morning.
Huntsville Sprint
I really like this race 😎

Swim 400m - We line up by predicted race time. I put my time from last year. Many others did not and overestimated their ability. So I started #96 / 300. The swim is 400m, 8 lanes - down one lane, go under the lane line and back up the next. We start 2 at a time, 5-10 seconds after the people in front of us. In the first 50m I passed three swimmers. I passed a few in each lap. The time I put was really close to what I swam, which I’m happy with. Just wish others would be more accurate. Maybe next year I’ll need to take my time down just a bit.

Bike 7 miles - this distance is pretty similar to running a 5k in that it SUCKS. It’s basically a long sprint but you need to both control yourself better on turns and keep enough in you to run afterwards. I’d probably Closer to running a 10k effort wise but the point remains to a degree. I do enjoy passing people on the bike, and not getting passed by anyone. Strava shows 21mph which was the goal; official website shows 22.7mph which doesn’t seem right. I think the course was half a mile short. Still, while I definitely need to improve my short speed, I’m happy with it today.

Run 3 miles - this course is not designed for speed. The first quarter mile is on grass with curves, roots, and holes. Then sidewalk for 1/4 mile or so, then gravel for over a mile before getting onto the greenway, hard track for most of the race, last quarter is back on grass. I was hoping to hit under 7 for the last mile and probably would have if not for the grass. 22:36 / 7:31 pace (7:22 according to strava)

Won the illustrious 40-49 year old group. I was listed as the overall masters winner for a while but that must have been a glitch as the real winner was 4 minutes ahead of me. Still, 13/165 males, 15th overall. our team did well overall with many podiums, that’s a good day.

Fun to watch and relevant for some of you maniacs.
Good to see @gianmarco crushing his long runs and then just happening to watch youtube videos about running ultras. Do you have something you want to share with us about your future running plans? :brush:
No.
You could gian into each aid station instead of just the finish line.

I'd pace him just to see this.
I'd man the aid stations just to laugh at him.

I’m 5 goal pace workouts & longruns from a taper. My change in training plan from prior marathons has given less tangible workout history comps to prior years but my sub maximal HR and paces are improved and workouts have been rolling along through the summer.

The remaining goal pace work and some long run goal pace inclusion stuff is going to be a confidence boost I’m looking forward to.

Messing with more electrolytes night before harder sessions has been helpful. I’ll be trying a slew of different gels next couple weeks (SIS, neversecond, precision) to see how raceday ammo belt will look.

Onward all.

Noticed when I looked at my Garmin last night after my run that it is now listing estimated sweat loss? Anyone know how long it's been doing this and if it's at all accurate?

The number it gave seemed low to me even though I'm not a crazy sweater, and I'm also not sure how well they can model it given that they don't know whether you're running in shade, etc. I would think HR would only be mildly correlated with how much you are sweating. Still, they certainly have a lot of data to mine, so if it's even in the ballpark I can see it being very useful to prevent over or under hydrating after a run.

Wasn't even close for me. I weighed myself before/after a run (@gianmarco inspired me), and after 1h10m in DFW heat/humidity, I had lost 5lbs. That's over 2L of water. And my hair was still soaked and had sweat all over me. Like a spaghetti noodle you just pulled out of the pot, if you need a visual.

Garmin estimated just over half of that.

It probably uses temp/humidity info and historical studies to estimate what you would lose if you were an average human in those conditions.

I just looked and I see it. I just checked my 16 mi run on Sunday and it estimated 1.6L lost. That's so cute.

I guess it only estimates for the first 3 miles for me.

So a distinct lack of endorsement then. Like I said, it seemed low for me as well. If it at least scaled (e.g., always estimating about half of actual), that'd still be useful. I think I'll start watching it to see how much signal there is versus noise.

My training has been sporadic as we were in Hawaii since the 31st (3 nights on the Big Island and 6 nights in Maui).

With the fires, I will say we were very fortunate. Our planned flight was on Wednesday and while it was delayed 10 hours causing a 17 hour overall longer trip home, we got out with only a travel inconvenience. Got home last night and are exhausted from the trip and just in shock of everything that happened and is continuing to happen in Maui.

We were staying in Kihei, east of Lahaina that burned down. What didn't get as much attention was fires were also to the east of where we were. They proactively evacuated a neighborhood 3 miles east of where we were and we could see the red hue of the eastern fire at night. There was some real fear that that the highway to the airport would be overrun with the fire and we would be trapped. We left for the airport way early and fortunately didn't encounter the fire itself.

What a tragedy.

Logged my first 30-mile week and beginning to see some meaningful improvements. Eager to see what my pace starts to look like once the weather gets less soupy in the fall. My legs are telling me it’s time for a down week, so I’m planning to pull back to 15-20 miles next week before going back to 30+. Seeing lots of great runs from everyone else, keep it up.

Gotta feel good to know that when he’s ready to make the leap he’s got pacers, bbq at aid stations & a shirtless guy for each foot

80 miles last week. Really trying to get 100 per week consistently, but when I had time this weekend (afternoons) the suck index was 170 both days. I'm usually an "eff it" guy, but that's asking for heatstroke. So inside ride it was Sunday. Still, three solid rides is a good week.

This is not aging well. Track session residue remains with angry old adductor. It’s easing off so am want to see if I can warm up and test it a bit on some goal pace time this weekend.

Not been a fan of the icy hot patch right next to my sack. Will try to see PT for some magic needles and have a massage set for Tuesday.
I should have switched that track workout for something else. Greedy pig.

Have you tried using Biofreeze?

I like to mix arnica gel and voltorin cream. And then complain.

Update to the update. Spirits soar on the wings of a squeezed-in PT session. She said I was a mess only two weeks after seeing her and my left leg was visibly shorter than right and my hip flexor complex and adductors were a bound up mess of hot ****.

Note to future self to be really careful with the duration of track sessions and to run the recoveries the other direction.

After a bunch of manipulation and some hurt so good and we are feeling a lot better. Hopeful to get a good session in Sunday.

Yeah, but did she do your feet?

Feet were not addressed this day. I will let the masseuse loose on them on Tuesday though.

Just saw these 3 docuseries on running the 6 majors.

Thomas Eller

Next one is released in a week: Alexandria Williams
I just watched the Thomas Eller video. Very inspiring ...very touching. As you know, my recent research was on disability as an element of diversity. The inspiration behind that research paper came from two deaf colleagues who teach at Gallaudet University. I understand some of what Thomas was saying from seeing the experiences of my friends. Thanks for sharing.

Couple crazy falls on the ladies 10k and mixed 400 relay today were 😳

Men’s 1500 heats are just bonkers with the hi light probably being Jakob Ingebrigtsens peaky blinders style haircut.

Can anyone link the racing calendar if it's up to date? If not, chime in with what's coming up because it seems there's a whole lot of training going on and I hadn't been keeping up with what's upcoming.
