Rank your top 5 "Rock" albums from the past 20 years (released in 2003 or later) (1 Viewer)

Lotta repeats from @rockaction 's thread but my personal top 5 in no particular order but for the first album would be:

Oracular Spectacular - MGMT (my top choice
American Idiot - Green Day (even though it's not their best work)
Elephant - White Stripes
Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not - Artic Monkeys
In Rainbows - Radiohead
Narrow Stairs - Death Cab for Cutie

Do Mumford and Sons count? I thought not, but if they did I'd have Babel in my top 5 and would probably take out In Rainbows (just on personal preference).

Damn, not sure why I forgot about the bold. That'd be way up there for me, too, and probably should replace In Rainbows for me.

ETA: Upon reflection, Narrow Stairs is my preference. I still listen to more songs from that album.

You're question is really puzzling (unless you're unfamiliar with the album, in which case, disregard).

My question isn't puzzling at all, and I'm more than passingly familiar with the album and more than familiar with Jay-Z's inclusion in the "rock and roll" hall of fame.

Some things aren't rock. The Black Album is one of those things. It's not even close to rock. Only a tortured definition of "rock" gets one there.

The Postal Service and Death Cab aren't rock, either, but I figured I wouldn't be a grinch and picked the obvious (by all accounts at the time) non-rock album.

There isn't a "Genre" tag in question that calls the Black album "rock." Not on Wiki, not on any page nor almost any review about the album that contains the word "genre" in it. It's hip hop or rap, pure and simple, and nobody denied that until the rock and roll "Hall of Fame" started putting the likes of Missy Elliott and disco starts into it, conflating pop and rock, conflating heretofore easily understood genres.

99 Problems and Jay-Z still doesn't rock.

You know who rocks? The King of Rock.

I'm the king of rock, there is none higher
Sucker MC's should call me sire
To burn my kingdom, you must use fire
I won't stop rockin' till I retire
Now we rock the party and come correct
Our cuts are on time and rhymes connect
Got the right to vote and will elect
And other rappers can't stand us, but give us respect!

Another example of Rick Rubin trying to sell records by conflating the definitions and using guitar samples over a hip hop/rap drum machine.

Yain't foolin' nobody, from '85 to '03.

The king of crowd rockers finally is back
My voice is your choice as the hottest wax
True as a wizard, just a blizzard, I ain't taken no crap
I'm rhymin' and designin' with your girl in my lap
The bass is kickin' always stickin' 'cause you like it that way
You think it's hotter plus it's def 'cause it's by Cool J
Cut Creator on the fader, my right-hand man
We rock the bells so very well 'cause that's the name of this jam
Rock the bells!

Careful. You may draw the ire of rockarbiter

Rock Lobster?

That's absolutely fine if you want to list Run DMC and Jay-Z as rock bands. Just go to the 'hood and tell them you're doing so. Write back when you get the chance.

Taylor Swift? I mean she's 100% pop...... maybe folk I guess......rock? That does not seem like the proper genre for her.

Band of Skulls - Baby Darling Doll Face Honey (2009)
Royal Blood - Royal Blood (2014)
Metallica - Death Magnetic (2009)
The Black Keys - Thickfreakness (2003)
Sleigh Bells - Treats (2010) (rock?)
The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely (2008) - if Sleigh Bells isn't rock.

That was me giving a nod to my fourteen year old daughter. We listen to it all the time. Wasn't even thinking about it genre wise.

This is a really good question. Without doing too much serious thought this is what came to mind

5 Self Titled - Fuzz
4 Amputechture - The Mars Volta
3 Sleeping Through the War - All Them Witches
2 Like Clockwork - Queens of the Stone Age
1 Self Titled - Them Crooked Vultures

You really like Queens of the Stone Age, huh?

I'm not the arbiter of anything, but this sounds a wee bit racist. I don't think Run, DMC or Jay-Z live in the hood these days.

Can we get back to the 5 best rock albums since 2003? I'm anxious to hear what rockarbiter deems appropriate choices.

TIA

If this is where your peak is, I suggest another mountain range.

Yeah, no, it's not racist. And by merely suggesting it, you know what you're doing. But that's par for the course I guess, for modern sensibilities. It's reality, not racist. You'd get a lot of amused looks at best.

Sarcasm down?

You didn't use this /s

;)

I gave Ted Leo a spin on the train. Not for me.
Well, I flat out am digging your list GM.

I'm not going to simply vomit one up. This takes time.

Note: I am not suggesting she should be labelled as rock, merely that she does have some songs that rock a bit

Do The Shins count as rock?
They were #6 on my 2003 list. Not sure if they would pass muster as rock though. ;)

Emo? Same genre as Deathcab, right? Just trying to see the bucket I need to pull from.
Never thought of them as emo. Indie would be the bucket I tossed both of them in

Need a @rockarbiter ruling to be sure.

Tis why I used a question mark. Coffee House rock? Indie?

Need better parameters here. The navigational buoys are opaque.

I don't see how Arcade Fire is ROCK and The Shins are NOT rock.
Arcade Fire is more bombastic and at least from my memory has more grooving, jamming, etc. Louder? I can't explain but AF feels more rock to me than The Shins

Feel like AI needs to get involved here. In no universe would I consider Arcade Fire more rock than The Shins. Both bands are fronted by wispy hipsters. Didn't Arcade Fire require concert goers to dress in period piece costumes?

The first three Arcade Fire records are very rockin. Reflektor is a lil different.
Reflektor is where I fell off the train with the band. Not sure if I didn't care for the new direction or I was just tired of the band itself.
