RB Christian McCaffrey, SF (3 Viewers)

Here's a study that suggests that the combine does not predict NFL performance. Interesting.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/18841077/
Sorry in advance about hippling the head, but this

"Using correlation analysis, we find no consistent statistical relationship between combine tests and professional football performance, with the notable exception of sprint tests for running backs."

was in the summary of the study.

In a poll of nine NFL Draft experts and former NFL scouts conducted by Peter King of the MMQB, all nine predicted Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey would go in the top-20.

Dan Hatman of The Scout Academy had McCaffrey the highest at No. 8 (Panthers), while Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus had him the lowest at No. 19 (Bucs). King didn't ask our opinion on the matter, but we would agree that McCaffrey is likely to hear his name called among the first 20 picks.

Stanford HC David Shaw told MMQB's Albert Breer that RB Christian McCaffrey shares similarities with Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy.
Breer, himself, has likened McCaffrey to former USC star Reggie Bush. And while we are playing in the comparison sandbox, Saints HC Sean Payton envisions the 6-foot, 202-pounder as taking a role similar to that of Darren Sproles once he hits the NFL. We think that undersells McCaffrey's ability to handle more of a workload, but there are almost certainly other teams who view matters in a similar light to that of Payton. He is a likely top-20 pick at this juncture and could potentially be the second running back off the board behind (presumably) Leonard Fournette.

Pro Football Focus compared Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey to former St. Louis Rams RB Marshall Faulk.
As far as comparisons go, this is about as juicy a one as you will see. "McCaffrey’s unique skill-set is reminiscent of Marshall Faulk’s versatility and ability to play wide receiver — as well as a wide receiver does — in addition to playing running back," explains the PFF analysis crew. They would like to see the do-everything 6-foot, 202-pounder land in a creative offensive system that would allow him to utilize his wide range of skills. While Faulk is the most lofty comp we have heard for McCaffrey, he has also variously been compared to the likes of Reggie Bush, Darren Sproles and (courtesy of Stanford HC David Shaw) LeSean McCoy. All indications point toward a top-20 selection for C-Mac come the draft.

Jason Licht is on record as referring to McCaffrey as a great "3rd and 4th down player."  Maybe that means he loves him?!

I don't see Tampa taking him at 19 though especially if Cook is still available.  I think their plan is Cook at 19 or Mixon in round 2.  If neither is available in those spots they sit tight, keep Doug Martin, and draft Foreman, Hunt, or Mack in rounds 3/4.

Hornets staffer Pete Guelli passes along word from one NFL scout he "trusts" who says Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey is the "best all around prospect he has ever done a report on."
This scout is using a bit of hyperbole, or is new to the business. We love McCaffrey, but this is outlandish. We would absolutely listen to the argument that McCaffrey is the top running back in this class, but he is not even better than last year's top running back Ezekiel Elliott. Still, a Hornets staffer citing a source only connects the Panthers to the Stanford back even more.

Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey is declining all private workout requests from NFL teams, according to Mike Florio.
McCaffrey is staying consistent after electing to sit out Stanford's bowl game. McCaffrey to fully participate in the NFL Combine and did position drills at the school's pro day, but does not want to take the extra risk at these private workouts. Expect to see more and more prospects take a similar approach in future years.

The "Hornets" don't even exist anymore - and that franchise moved to New Orleans years ago, so if anything it would connect McCaffrey to the Saints not the Panthers - which makes more sense with Peyton recently gushing about him.

The Sidney Jones injury makes this easily justified. He also did everything at the combine and ran with the WRs. And then took kickoffs at his Pro Day. Plus, he has a ton of college film to look at.

A promise to take that guy barring he's there at that team's pick
So nothing other than a team just saying things to him? I thought it was some sort of "draft guarantee" that was for like a bank loan or some type of "draft insurance" or some strange thing like that.

It's a pre-written card you can turn in 5 years prior to the NFL draft obviously

why would any team do that?
And why would McCaffrey and his team fall for that?

His dad played in the NFL, they know there is nothing binding about any guarantee, and there are countless players that have stories of teams saying they would take him and then didn't.

I think it's more likely McCaffrey is saying I have worked out, you have my workout numbers, and years of tape.  Not trying to blow an Achilles out running pass patterns for one team.

I'll admit I was wrong if he's a bust. I think he'll be something like 800 yards rushing, 600 yards receiving, 8 TDs in years 2-4.  Not sure how he'll do as a rookie but I'd be surprised if he doesn't do well this year. And I'll come back to eat crow if he's a complete bust after year 3.

Don't know how true:

According to @xOrtiz4x, the Eagles plan on selecting Christian McCaffrey with the 14th overall pick

https://twitter.com/madeforphilly/status/854747564851200002

He's been on ESPN and CBS and worked for BR before starting his own thing. He's not some random nobody, and he has Philly connections.
Well, good thing for the Eagles that if you announce it the week before the draft you stake your claim and no one is allowed to trade up in front of you to take him.

An NFL scout characterized Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey as "a mismatch guy, and when they get in the league they make hay."

"Have you ever seen a guy catch the ball that good?" he said. "If he moves out to the edge you might have your ‘sam’ backer on him. The other thing is, you don’t have to worry about that kid. He has been prepared for the NFL since he was born. When you get guys with dads that played in the league, they’ve been told all their lives to compete." McCaffrey's father, Ed, played 13 years in the NFL. One scout speaking with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel compared McCaffrey's interview to Tim Tebow’s. Though C-Mac has generally received rave reviews from anonymous NFL sources during the pre-Draft process, he still has his critics. "Everyone’s anointing him as the next great white (hope)," said another scout. "I’m a little skeptical. He didn’t dominate as much as he did sophomore year. Why is that? What’s the value of a third-down back and return specialist?" We believe McCaffrey can be an every-down NFL back.

Yeesh, sometimes it's good to see quotes like these to remind us that these "scouts" are often just football fans who happened to luck into the right spot.

What a truly ridiculous statement.  Why didn't he dominate as much as the year where he had 2600 yards from scrimmage?  I dunno, maybe because that's one of the greatest seasons of all time and you'd expect things to regress a little bit from it.  Oh, and not to mention that he played three fewer games the following year and he was actually on pace to put up MORE yards that year?

I don't think we can trust this Odell Beckham guy.  He didn't quite dominate as much in 2016 like he did in 2015.  He was a little worse.  Probably best to avoid.

Ridiculous.

You forgot the tinge of racism. Why does his skin color matter? His measurables are just as good as other prospects and he has proven production in an NFL style system.

He did have a very good offensive line, and he is a little under the ideal weight, those are real worries, not perceived BS.

Stanford offensive coordinator Mike Bloomgren specifically mentioned the Panthers as a scheme fit for RB Christian McCaffrey because of their trips personnel.

The Panthers, picking No. 8, have been heavily linked to McCaffrey over the past month-plus. Bloomgren, a former NFL assistant, said McCaffrey will fit in the modern NFL because "teams want to run 21 personnel (two running backs, one tight end) and then split Christian out wide and run 3x1 trips (three receivers stacked on one side of the field)." He further deemed some of criticisms McCaffrey has received "ridiculous," emphatically stating that McCaffrey excels between the tackles, is a good pass protector and will be a three-down back in the NFL. "It’s like, ‘Have you ever seen us play?’ We run power," Bloomgren said. We couldn't have said it any better.

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said both Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffrey fit in the Panthers' offense.

The Panthers have been heavily linked to selecting a running back at No. 8 overall in industry mock drafts, with Fournette and McCaffrey the two most popular picks. "They fit ... Christian has a different style from Leonard, there's no doubt about it," Gettleman said. "Completely different style. And by the way, Leonard has really good hands, he catches the rock now." Gettleman isn't concerned about McCaffrey's ability to run between the tackles or become a three-down NFL runner. "The last two years he's rushed the ball for 650 and he's caught another 90 balls," he said. "So that right there -- he can run it, he can catch it -- I guess that's three downs ... He's certainly shown he can carry the load at Stanford."

Nice.

Yeah, this guy is a total mismatch in the making.  OC's are looking for them whenever possible.  The quote from the Stanfurd OC tells it all.  The guy is durable enough to run between the tackles.  Maybe not on a 20+ carry per game type of basis, but 10ish carries where the gap will be up the middle, sure why not?  He is going to give DC's headaches.  Too fast for linebackers, safeties and probably most DB's in general.  As for fantasy football, I'll be a buyer since he can obviously catch the football, put up yardage in bulk and can help in the return game.  Dude's a stud.

Player this good, I don't even give  a faulk about. Born to shine.
