RB Christian McCaffrey, SF (3 Viewers)

In 25 leagues I had 1st overall just once. So my exposure is limited to just that team. The guy is so productive it's really a bummer for him to miss so much time last year and this year. Sounds like he's doing what he can to give himself the best chance at a longer than average career.

I did draft Hubbard on one DraftKings best ball team. TBH, it was less strategic and more because he reminded me of a Ben & Jerry's flavor.

My favorite part is drafting. So, about 80% are best ball and most are slow drafts. The number of managed teams is reasonable and keeps me involved throughout the season.

Didn't do any season long last year at all due to concerns on the viability of the NFL season.

 
Ian Rappaport knows what we do. Literally nothing except that he is likely to sit for at least “a few” weeks. He just wanted to bump views. He cited nobody.

 
I would pose a hard no in that unless you get a ridiculous return. I have never owned him because of fortune, but if you throw him out, I am the sunfish at the dock waiting.

Eh, hammys happen. 

Last year was high ankle sprain, which also happens.

those type of injuries can happen to any player in any sport at any time. I don’t see either as “breaking down”.

the other was a shoulder injury IIRC? 

Any player can take a bad hit & suffer the same. Tee Higgins might miss this week with a shoulder injury. Is he breaking down?

I probably would.  It seems his body has accelerated wear and tear due to his usage in college and the past coaching regime in Carolina.  I dont care who you are you cannot have that many touches and not have some residual damage.

Not all touches are equal. Receiving touches are less abrasive than rushing touches. 

If your statement were true, Henry should have been hurt last year & this year. Yet on he goes, churning out yardage & taking an absolute pounding.

If you really dont think the number of touches that a player has doesnt affect his overall health and long term consequences that go with them then there is really no point in discussing anything. 

Singling out one player to try and prove this as false doesnt really apply across the board.   And I would fully expect that if Tenn keeps feeding him the way they are its just a matter of time before his wheels fall off.

Getting rid of someone like CMC, Dalvin or Kamara is tough but before the season began I was looking at RB age and value and it was sobering.

The most valuable 27+year old RB was Derrick Henry. Arguably the second most valuable was Mostert followed by Melvin Gordon. 

So ok, might just be an anomaly you say and with the 2017 RB class getting older they might buck the trend.

So entering the season the most valuable 26 year old RB's were Dalvin, Kamara and Elliot from the 2016 class. I've seen Dalvin traded twice this week and his only issue at this time seems to be an ankle injury but it's just week 2 and this guy gets rode hard. The other two seem to be value down a bit.

 As of this moment I have two teams with Dalvin/Kamara and a Dalvin/CMC team and all of those were original rookie picks. So I absolutely know how hard it is to give up players like this, I've poked around with a few offers but not got what I want but if I'm being honest with myself I've not pursued it as aggressively as I think I should have. 

Long story short, I think if you try and move every valuable RB you got in their age 25/26 season you are going to come out ahead most of the time.

People have said this for 3 years with Henry though.

The simple facts are that

1. not every touch is equal in weight

2. not every player is the same

therefore

3. applying some arbitrary touch metric to “prove” that all humans will react exactly the same using a select few examples sample size is framing a narrative. 

CMC could have a slight hammy pull after a season of 0 carries or 500.

making a blanket statement about a minor CMC injury based on heavy usage 2 years ago doesn’t sound scientific to me, but you’re certainly welcome to your opinion.

This is a take I can 100% get behind.

I sold basically every asset over the age of 26 to rebuild.

Definitely a better metric than workload for a player who can still produce in their prime.

Because that’s how long a low grade hammy injury takes.

And he’s not out “close to a month”. It may be 2 weeks. Clearly they’re optimistic because they didn’t IR him. 

Grade 1 hammy is 2-3 weeks. More severe grades are significantly longer & the most severe requires surgery. 

hyperbole doesn’t serve anyone well in these discussions. All we know is what the team has said. And they haven’t said he’s going to be out “nearly a month”.

CMC, misses 4 carries due to an ingrown toenail.

I dont think the timing is great to put him on the trading block right now.

However there is some wisdom in what Menobrown said and also just looking at a pretty large sample size of players from my study, it was only one out of 4 players who had a top 12 season who were able to do this for more than 2 seasons, which CMC has done so far already in his career.

Now CMC has a lot going for him that are positives as far as him being one of those players. Even with missing several weeks he still might do that this season, and his opportunities when healthy are elite.

I dont think it hurts you any to listen to offers. You may get some really bad offers right now because he is injured. As long as you dont mind listening to those and saying no I dont see any harm in doing that. It's actually a good opportunity to gather information from your competitors.

Maybe some one actually makes you a good offer worth considering. 

I would not sell CMC at a discount because he is injured though and I would expect most offers to be trying to buy low.

As I said though you might learn some things from those offers like what players your competition is willing to move on from, maybe that information leads you to some other deals that do not involve CMC.

I dont see any harm in doing it. Just be prepared for a lot of low ball offers.

Doing this now may cause your competition to smell blood in the water and start sending you lots of offers you would not get otherwise. That doesnt mean you have to be a tomato. You can always say no.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule said Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) will not be placed on injured reserve.

Things could change but, for now, this would seem to indicate that the Panthers expect to have their star runner back within three weeks, the minimum length of a stay on injured reserve. McCaffrey suffered the hamstring injury in Carolina's Thursday win over the Texans. Chuba Hubbard is the next man up and should see plenty of work until McCaffrey returns. He played 73 percent of the snaps after McCaffrey went down and saw 14 touches. Royce Freeman will serve as his backup.

I'm guessing that is why they ruled him out and he spent so much time in the blue tent...but it's all speculation for me.

Trying to stretch it out and test it, him wanting to go back into the game, Coach saying "it's the Texans we need you."

Again, just speculation. My conspiracy hat said coaches wanted to rest him after all those touches the past 10 days lol

Iirc he was instantly ruled out, then still spent a lengthy amount of time in the tent. That’s what had me worried- that it was so bad they knew he couldn’t go but still wanted to look at it.
 

Oh well, very happy to be wrong. I’ll make due for a few weeks. 

 
Has anyone traded for him or traded him away in redraft? Just curious on where people value him and might try and make a push for him depending on the answers around here.

I have him in a non-IR, short bench league. I’m holding but assume that any of my league mates would try to buy way lower than it’s worth.

😄 If any coach said that, they should be shown the door.

If CMC was in an danger of making the injury worse (a safe assumption), the Panthers were wise to get him off the field.  Especially in a Thursday night game against the Texans when the team is ahead and already at 2-0.

Just got him in a trade. Seemed fair on both ends as he is winless and I was 3-0 with most PF.

League is redraft, 12 standard, 2rb 3wr 1flex for reference.

trade was CMC/dj Moore for ekeler/hunt

Don't want to list whole rosters but he was starting Mkissic, Rojo as RB1 and RB2. Just thought I'd show what he went for at least in my league and what the CMC owner had for rb's. 

Now hope he comes back fully health and it isn't a season lingering injury

He sent me the trade. I just reached out and said I was interested. Took me awhile to hit accept as my RB2 for these 2 weeks is in rough shape, but if he is healthy it won't even matter.

I think the records make it a good trade. You can afford to sit on him at 3-0. I give props to the owner who knew his 0-3 team needed wins now, and he made a trade that provided that opportunity. Too many owners would have been stubborn and sat on their guy because they wouldn't get "full value." Now he has Ekeler to help right the ship now.

Good move for both sides imo 

 
Panther declared RB Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) out for Week 4 against the Cowboys.

McCaffrey had no real chance of playing this week, as he deal with a multi-week hamstring injury he suffered in Week 3. The majority of his role will be handled by Chuba Hubbard with Royce Freeman mixing in. Hubbard flashed a similar snap share to McCaffrey in limited action last week. If he can play 75%+ snaps this week, Hubbard has significant upside in an offense that prioritizes targets to the running back position.

ESPN's David Newton reports Christian McCaffrey "could return next week but maybe more likely in two weeks."

Newton's report comes with a few qualifiers but it still helps us narrow down a timeline for McCaffrey's return. The initial outlook was that he was set to miss "a few weeks" and that seems to hold true still. If McCaffrey returns in Week 6, he would be back for a juicy matchup with the Vikings, who are allowing the second-most yards per play through three weeks. Until then, Chuba Hubbard will serve as the Panthers' starting runner. He is in line for RB2 numbers based on the role Carolina gave Mike Davis with McCaffrey sidelined last year.

Thru 4 games CMC on pace for:

854 rushing yards

693 receiving yards

68 catches, ~4 touchdowns

Sadly, we could probably post the pace through 5 games already.  Or 6... 🤕

 
As much as I want and need CmC back in my lineup (and the loses two weeks in a row show it) I really do hope the Panthers don’t rush him back. Let him sit next week and aim for week 6. With hammies it’s so easy to have a reinjury and then we are looking at him being out for a while.

I agree. But with them contending I fear they might rush him back too soon.

 
Man, can’t say I’m feeling great about him playing this week. Would much rather him miss this week if it meant greater chance for season long availability. Hammies are notoriously tricky. I hope the Panthers know what they’re doing (spoiler alert: they probably don’t).

This is one of the times were just stupid as a society.  Chip Kelly had this awesome tech that scanned a bod for heat and trainers would then know to react to an overheated body part which is well proven to be an imminent muscle issue. But oh no Kelly was the worst, what does he know, he's no longer a coach, he's no doctor etc. As if he is the one that patented this, built the machines, or did the studies.

We would know (far better if not conclusively) on AJ and McCaffrey. 

Stretch, work it out, stretch, what's the heat temp on the muscle?

A massage and stretch could also lower the temp 

It was so fascinating!

The Eagles felt like an interruption to their day to day and didn't give it the full commitment it needed.

I'd bet $, 10 years from now this is back in all sports and prevalent. It's garbage that we have to wait for shame and probably a company name change to take place

Yup. I'd rather him get close to 100% as possible. Even if he's a dreaded GTD keep him on ice.
