RB Ezekiel Elliott, LAC (4 Viewers)

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill Jr. reports the Cowboys are expected to release Ezekiel Elliott.

Hill cited sources "close to the situation" who said the team would part ways with Elliott, 27, a longtime favorite of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. The move, which would be a post-June 1 release, would save the Cowboys nearly $11 million against the cap. In 2022, Elliott's yards per carry plunged to a career low 3.7. He recorded runs of more than ten yards on just 17 of his 254 rushing attempts last season, having completely lost the explosiveness that made him one of the NFL's most productive backs from 2016 to 2019. Zeke in 2022 ranked 48th in Pro Football Focus' breakaway rate, lower than plodding backs like Damien Harris and Boston Scott. Tony Pollard would become a first-round pick in fantasy drafts if Elliott is released, and we could see a team sign Zeke to a one-year flier deal unless he retires.

It’s the beard and hair. Yep, that’s it for sure.

Wow, strange to see the option of retirement. It does seem like he has been in the league forever and then I see he is only 27.

Cowboys released Ezekiel Elliott.

He will be designated as a post-June 1 release, freeing $10.5 million in cap space. The move was foreshadowed earlier in the day but can now be considered official. Zeke has been a favorite of Jerry Jones and much of the Cowboys' front office for years, but his play in 2022 reached a low that made even his most ardent supporters see the light. He averaged 3.8 yards per carry on his way to 876 rushing yards. Both marks were career lows. He also ranked as one of the league's least efficient backs in NextGen Stats' rushing yards over expected metric. With Tony Pollard's role increasing but his efficiency only ballooning to new heights, it was impossible to justify keeping Zeke around for another year. He will now look for a new home as a two-down plodder, though the market for a 27-year-old back with well over 2,000 career touches and seemingly nothing left in the tank could be slim.

Zeke has been looking run down for a while now. I'm sure he catches on as a 10-15 carry guy with another team, but I think leaving Dallas hurts his fantasy value. I got the feeling the Boys forced the ball to Zeke more than they should have to try to justify his contract.

I roster Zeke in dynasty. I will continue to roster him until the league moves on. But I think the league just might do that. He looks sort of cooked.
I could see him get one more job & perform like a FF RB2, 15-20 range.

Maybe even sneak in one more flukey top 12 finish on a contender. Maybe not

He’s gonna retire on a lot of dynasty rosters like yours, that’s probably for sure.

Guy was an absolute beast for years upon years. Might have broken down towards the end, but very rarely missed a game and still managed to put up decent numbers as a reduced version of himself. I traded him away for a ‘23 2nd, ‘24 2nd at the deadline last season. Consider myself lucky tbh, was probably the very very last moment to get anything of value for him

I take a small amount of pleasure after watching Jerry talk so highly of Elliot and the rightness of his contract only to turn around and cut him

Honestly watching last year I feel like Elliot is worth less than Montgomery and probably in the range of Foreman (although Foreman looks way more dynamic)

Also where I'm at. He was useful fantasy depth despite the dropoff. We'll see what his next role is, but I'm waiting until the fantasy usefulness dries up before I rush to cut him.

Regarding the dropoff, can Cowboys fans confirm that he looked just as cooked before the injury as he did after? Is it possible that he was playing through something a little bit more than what the average NFL RB is playing through late in the regular season?

Any word on a renegotiated contract with the Cowboys that Zeke turned down? Or they didn't want him back at any price?

I f I were Philly...you spent nada on Penny and might get nada from him but if he can physically line up and take the field each week, Elliott would be nice in the 2nd Half when they build these leads and run the clock down.

What Zeke will actually agree to play for is another issue. If I had his kind of money, not sure I would want to play for $2M-$4M a season, even to try and secure a SB ring.
He can still walk pretty normal, wouldn't be the worst thing if he retired and walked away from the game

If he has other ideas and wants to try and extend his career for any number of reasons, he should try to get on a strong Playoff contender and be the 2nd guy.

Chiefs Chiefs Chiefs
2nd Half to salt away and run clock down

Lions let Jamaal Williams go, they need a guy to get the ball into the end zone, 10-12 carries a game
Cardinals could use a steady at RB, there's several teams you could make a case for.

I've enjoyed watching him, his early seasons were good for most of my redraft teams

Makes some sense if he wants to chase a ring on a reasonable contract. I believe that they struggled mightily on 3rd/4th & 1 this season.
Pus they rebuilt a lot of their OL the last couple of off seasons, if they have the right pieces there, Mahomes at QB, hard for a defense to think about stopping Zeke
If the Chiefs have the cap space, it makes a lot of sense for them. He won't be asked to carry the ball anywhere near the amount he has in Dallas.
Pacheco-Zeke would be a solid for KC

hey for Barkley insurance or as a bench guy to spell him, Zeke would be a great fit in a NYG uniform. I'd take him in a NY minute pun intended

Lions signed Monty to replace Williams.

Feels weird to say, but at this point, I'm not sure Matt Breida doesn't bring more to the table than Zeke, and he's obviously a lot cheaper.

I think with it being an especially deep draft class, Zeke might be waiting a while to be signed. Ala a guy like Latavius Murray the past 2 years.

I dunno why people keep trying to add more RBs to Philly's RB room. I'm pretty sure they're done there besides maybe a rookie in a later round.

No chance we could afford Zeke, nor would I want him. Penny is gonna be more durable than ppl think. Planting the flag.

He's on my favorite team now, therefore he will stay healthy :ponder:

OK then. Lets go with that
no I just don't buy into everyone loving to call someone injury prone. I think he can make it double digit games. More discussion on this is in the Penny forum though.

I get that BUT Penny truly has been injury prone. Not a small sample size.

People used to call Frank Gore injury prone because of a few missed games in a couple season. That was not the case. Hopefully Penny can avoid injury. Fun guy to watch and makes FF more enjoyable

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports free agent RB Ezekiel Elliott has "narrowed" his options down to the Eagles, Jets, and Bengals.

He'd like to make the decision by the end of next week, per Schefter. Cincinnati would probably profile as Elliott's softest landing spot for fantasy purposes -- assuming that means they'd move on from Joe Mixon and not use Elliott as a goal-line battering ram. Signing with the Eagles might throw a crimp into Rashaad Penny's fantasy profile. The Jets would probably use him over Zonovan Knight as an early-down back. It's surprising that there's this much interest in Elliott coming off a rough 2022 season.

 Bengals, if you sign him, he better be cheap.

Has anyone notified the Eagles, Jets, or Bengals?

We'll see what the 1-year deal looks like, but that has to be somewhat encouraging if he has an offer from all three teams and they're not even waiting to see what falls in the draft. Bengals could still drop Mixon and take a big swing, but I tend to think that this most likely puts a wrap on Jets and Eagles doing anything very significant.

As far as Zeke's '23 impact..

I'm thinking Perine role in Cincy, maybe more/less if Mixon is gone and depending on the rookie.

Philly, a little underwhelming for goalline. But gets interesting in a hurry if Penny goes down.

Jets would be a complete TBD depending on how Hall rounds into form.

I'm open to the idea that some of what we saw at the end of last season had something to do with the injury. If Cowboys fans can say he was just as cooked early as he was late, then nevermind.

The guy is a warrior in pass protection, last play as center notwithstanding. It's not surprising to me that a contender would come calling. Luckily we have no shortage of veteran 1 year contracts as a point of comparison. It will be interesting to see what he gets.

They just signed Ty Johnson too. So they now have Breece, Carter, Ty, and Knight under contract. Actually looks pretty doubtful he'd go there.
Imagine Rodgers, Zeke, and OBJ all going to the Jets for one last shot? lol
