RB Giovani Bernard, TB (1 Viewer)

Plays like that kill the gio love.. small play in the stat sheet but monster for the coaches
what play? I missed the 2nd half
Probably when the Bengals were running out the clock and BGJE was bulldozing people to make first downs and kill clock. I know people love to rail on Lewis for how he uses people, but for my money both guys were nails in their roles last night.
Absolutely. As fantasy guys, we tend to overlook the little things that mean a ton to NFL coaches, but seem futile to us. Such as moving the chains in small 2-3 yard increments that keeps your defense off the field.May not be what we want, but I'm sure Marvin is as pleased as punch as to what Law Firm was able to do.

Now when the team is playing in catch up mode, then I imagine we'll see more of Gio.
eh that might be overstating it

It seems obvious to me that the Bengals brass realized that they couldn't get over the hump because of lack of play making at TE and RB and that is why they addressed that in the draft. On monday night those 2 draft picks were the x factors and arguably the difference in the game.

Yet our fantasy takeaway should be that coaches were really excited about that 3rd and 2 pickup by BJGE? And that should be the direction of the offense in the future? Yeah not buying it
Can't look at it only from a fantasy standpoint. Totally agree that Gio should - and probably will - get more touches going forward. But to think that because he is much more explosive, he is going to put BJGE on the bench is misguided thinking. They complement each other well. Gio's time will come, but may be a ways off.
I think the original statement (not by you) was "kill the Gio love" which I took as fantasy

He wasn't ever going to be a volume back and we knew that. The upside isnt great but it certainly is relevant in the current RB scarce FF landscape.
This isn't true. Unless you are only talking about 2013.

Marvin Lewis has some decisions to make.

Giovani Bernard -- He is explosive and he needs more touches. The idea that BJGE can "run the clock out" is true...but if Gio gets 15-20 touches a game, perhaps the Bengals score an additional 7-10 points and put themselves in better positions? The 3 yards and a cloud of dust that the coaching staff loves in the fourth quarter, is a drag on the offense in the first quarter.

Gio needs to be the main man, aside from short yardage and "run the clock out" scenarios. But at this point, BJGE is 100% still the 1A rb, and Gio is nothing more than a change of pace back, that happened to pick up 2 td's, which should be classified as "lucky". He's going to be a drag on your starting lineup until the coaching staff changes things up.

Yes, he needs to play against Green Bay for the Bengals to have any chance.
I would say the td pass could be qualified more as luck. But the other td he had the goal line touch which is defintely a good sign to see he can run between the tackles and is getting goal line love in week 2

Totally agree with you regarding his value considering the dearth of startable RBs these days.

I do think he can/will be a volume guy at some point though, just not this year as long as Law Firm is around and healthy.

I think he has a lot of upside going forward because he is making the most of his carries now.

The potential is clearly there. Will he have 2 touchdowns every game no. But he ran hard, and the Steelers arent a bunch of slappies on defense either.

I thought the consensus agreed that he probably was never going to be utilized as a true every down feature back ? (which he wasn't even really in college)

ETA I do mean throughout his career

If gio doesn't get 10 plus carries and 7 targets in the passing game against GB Lewis should be fired on the spot. Playing in catch up mode will be this week so I see GIO breaking out this week.
You're going to be sorely disappointed this week.

I can't remember the last time a Bengals RB got 7 targets. It's simply not their offense and not what they believe in.

The Bengals might be favored in that game so might want to slow down on calling for "catch up mode".

Marvin Lewis has as much job security as anyone in football.

Why not? He's built like Ray Rice and he's even a little faster. Good hands, great speed, and nice power. If Rice become a star and vaulted Baltimore to a championship, why couldn't Bernard be an every down feature back?

I disagree that he is built like Ray Rice

I'm a UNC homer and followed him closely since the recruiting days. He is slighter than Ray Rice and deserves some mention of injury proneness. Heck even during his signature play, the NC state punt return, he was already out with injury and gutted it out due to the situation.

I'll also say this... in a vacuum looking retrospectively, I think dynasty owners actually would rather him not be featured because of longeivity. If he is an every down back he is going to get dinged it is just a matter of time. He is a playmaker though and doesn't need a lot of snaps to produce.

I'm a N.C. State homer, and what I saw of Bernard in college has me expecting him to be a feature back in the near future. I expect him to be able to handle 15+ touches per game with no problem, and I expect him to be quite productive with that many touches. And that still leaves another 10+ touches for another RB.

I felt all along that it was between him and Lacy for top rookie RB.

Gio left 17 points on my bench while Murray gives me...what... 4? Is Gio startable over my 3 clowns Bradshaw, Murray, and J Bell?

You should try to trade for a better RB. Who are your WRs?
(weakest-link) RB: Murray, Bradshaw, Joique Bell, Gio Bernard, and dropping Vereen for Bryce Brown

(strongest-link) WR: Brandon Marshall, Demaryius Thomas, Steve Smith, Josh Gordon, Golden Tate, Reuben Randle

I like where I am I just need to get lucky on one of Gio, Bell, or Brown in order to start winning. I have teh highest (through 2 weeks) point total and I am 0-2 due to H2H shenanigans

12 carries 3-4 catches should be doable for Bernard goin forward.... BJGE can still get 15-17 carries 0 catches.

Is there anyone on the planet that can give me 3 reasons why the Bengals shouldn't give Gio 13-17 touches.... 10-14 carries and 3-5 catches a game..... Besides maybe not wanting to win, I don't see a reason to not give Gio 10-14 carries Bjge 15-19 carries.... both backs can touch ball 14-17 times... It just doesn't click hopefully the Dang coaches can see what EVERYONE else sees??????? :jawdrop: :jawdrop:

Leaning toward starting Gio over McFadden & Mathews - Green Bay's D has looked pretty bad to me so far, and I figure the Bengals can't afford to go for a shootout but will still need big plays to have any chance here.

guess no one wants to take a stab at why Gio shouldn't get 14-17 touches per game... Pretty blatantly obvious even for a schmuck like marvin and mike brown but we'll see how it plays out.. If Bjge is in there plodding away 20 plus times and Gio gets 6 touches that's just plain bs and they must be paid off to want to lose/ I can't think of a logical, legit explanation. I mean for the Giants at least wilson is fumbling and not blocking anyone, and that is the main reason for his misuse, but anything less then 15 touches is pure CRIMINAL mishandling and any perpetrators should be fired Instantly. Oc, head coach, gm, etc.

I don't think anyone disagrees with you. It's just, like... what can we do about it?

next season.

This year its a committee

It somewhat depends on if the Bengals have a lead or not I think also.

Bernard to help the Bengals build a lead. Then if they feel like the defense can keep the other team from scoring too much, slow things down a bit and run with Benjarvus Green-Ellis.

Against the Packers I do not think they will feel this comfortable so I expect them to play more of Bernard.

Because he's a rookie and all rookies must suffer the same way these veterans suffered when they were Rookies. He's the kind of guy who might benefit from a timeshare, put on a little muscle, etc.

If he keeps making plays, I'm sure he'll see more playing time. But it's not smart to give it all to him at once, BJGE isn't uber-impressive but he's pretty reliable. Not saying that Gio isn't but it's better to ease into these things, imo.

These guys are trying to compete in the NFL and the Bengals don't necessarily need Gio to be the guy right away. He is definitely more talented than the Law Firm though.

Really the only thing BJGE offers over a street FA type of RB is his ability to avoid fumbles. He is truly an awful runner, but his ability to hold onto the ball gives him a role, which should only be very shortage & closing out games.

If Cincy wants to be a contender in the AFC, Gio needs to be the lead dog.

ok I didn't say give all the carries to gio... 14-17 touches... it can still be a committee.... right now its not even a committee its like 80-20 bjge/gio and Gio is still fantasy relevant which is amazing... 12-14 carries and 2-4 catches isn't a Unbearable amount even as a rook... You think TB said Doug martin is a rookie we can only give him 9 touches... GET REAL... Get the ball in GIO's hands. I think Cinci is using Bjge so much because they are paying him and Mike brown is a selfish little twit.

A running back transitioning in the nfl from college is one of the easiest in the league to make..... I can name countless studs in rookie years from 96-present... Don't give me that rookie crap guppy. That's not the reason.

If Gio doesn't get 15 touches and Cinci Loses, I think all the coaches, coordinators and GM (Mike Brown) should all be stripped naked and taken out back and giving a good beating, Tennessee style because that would be as stupid as it comes. :thanks:

Talent finds a way on the field

You saw the beginning on Monday
100%

this will be a 65-35% split i think for BJGE

then in week 10

50-50

Gio just helps this team win ballgames... you need to get him more touches...
why wait til week 10 just to give him 50 percent of the carries if he is a far superb runningback to BJGE. If he helps you win ballgames wouldn't you think you would want him at least splitting carries with a guy who doesn't help you win ball games. Am I missing the boat on this, it seems to obvious.

I think you're looking at this from a fantasy perspective. I own Gio and want him to get touches, too. So we're in the same boat in that regard. But BJGE actually played well last week. For what they ask him to do. While Bernard has shown flashes of brilliance, it's not like Green-Ellis is fumbling or blowing his blitz pick ups. And the staff may also be easing him into the touches to see how he responds to more and more work. Until BJGE really screws up, I think the transformation from back up to shared-primary back is going to be a gradual one.

you are probably right but fantasy or no fantasy that sucks. Gio has in no way shown he should be given carries little by little. Everything he has shown so far is the exact opposite and the more touches the better for fantasy and real football and winning.

I hope he gets max touches but looking at the way lewis has been running this ship, its doubtful right now...

that being said, he won that game for him with his two tds.. that does not go unnoticed..

hes in my lineup, but i would rather start him than dwilson at this point...

yes me to... Im rolling with Spiller/Gio/J.bell in a ppr league with Colston/garcon as my wrs and Rg3..... I also have o.daniels,g.hartley and TB defense... Roddy,Dwilson, gronk on bench for at least another week... I think team has some decent upside.

Jay Gruden: Expect more carries for Giovani Bernard

As Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard scampered up and down the field Monday night, it was evident the rookie should be a bigger part of the offense.

The electric Bernard has 95 yards and two touchdowns on just 14 touches. Staring running backBenJarvus Green-Ellis has only 14 more total yards on his 38 touches through two games.

Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden admitted he would try get Bernard the ball more.

"I think they are going to get more to 50/50 sooner than later, probably," he said, per the Cincinnati Enquirer on Thursday.

Bernard brings an added dimension to the Bengals' offense that is unmistakeable. He's a home run threat every time he touches the ball. Outside of wide receiver A.J. Green, Bernard is the most explosive player the Bengals employ.

Gruden confessed he's still working out ways to deploy Bernard.

"That's something I'm trying to figure out," Gruden said. "Sometimes I need to know when Gio is in there because there might be a different set of plays for Gio more so than Benny. But really, they complement each other and both can do similar things. Gio, obviously, out in space is more productive. I try not to alter my play-calling too much when one is in there."

Gruden also praised Bernard's pass protection, meaning he's comfortable with him on the field in most situations.

Green-Ellis will still get the start and be leaned upon to salt away the clock late, but in between we should see more and more of the dynamic Bernard.

Rotoworld:

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis made it clear Gio Bernard (probable, hamstring) was limited in practice Thursday "as a precaution."
Bernard looked just fine going through drills in Friday's workout, per the eye of beat writer Joe Reedy. He was listed as a full participant. Bernard is coming off a two-touchdown game, but has yet to hit double-digit touches in either of the first two weeks. We like Bernard as a flex play and nothing more in Sunday's potentially high-scoring tilt with the Packers.

Also, for what it's worth, I really like Ball's situation in Denver. McGahee/Moreno were top 12 RBs in Denver last year. Whoever gets the ball is going to face a *TON* of nickel defenses. Ball's almost certainly going to be the goal-line back. I think his biggest threat is Hillman eating into his workload too much, but I think he has RB1 upside if he can wrest the McGahee role away (which I think is practically a fait accompli, given McGahee's age and cost).
Fox has historically preferred to play veterans over rookies (e.g., Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart). Both McGahee and Moreno qualify as veterans here. Do you discount Fox's history on that front? Also, it seems to me that pass protection and receiving ability is very important in the Denver offense. I am not aware that either of those things are strengths for Ball, but they certainly are strengths for Moreno. And I assume McGahee is probably better at those things also. Even if McGahee gets cut, I still expect Moreno to have a significant role, possibly the lead role. And Hillman will also be involved. Doesn't seem like a recipe for Ball to be an impact player, at least not this year.
prescient.

arrow pointed up for bernard...

14 touches, 99 total yards and another score (third in past two games)...

10-50-1 rushing, 4-49 receiving

law firm

10-29-1 rushing (1 fumble)

* the word that comes to mind describing the process of bernard's talent forcing an increasingly larger share of the distribution...

INEXORABLE

@adamlevitan: Giovani Bernard played on 37.2% of Week 1 snaps. 34.5% in Week 2. Bumped to 53.5% in Week 3. Bengals coaches seeing the light.

2 weeks in a row now Gio has received carries near the goalline
Very important point.

Just as importantly is that the Bengals had him in there - and was handed the ball - when they were backed up against their own goal line. You would think that would be a perfect spot for BJGE since he generally can move the pile forward, but shows how much faith they have in Gio.

Gio is taking over. He has every chance to be a top 5 RB THIS YEAR. He's a ppr goldmine and the Bengals are seeing the light quickly, to their credit. Smart move to start the season giving carries to BJGE, as he's a vet. But every time Gio isn't on the field, it's a win for the defense.

agreed... I hope it is 70-30 by midseason.... GIO 20 touches and Bjge 10-12 ...... It's not real hard to see who is better and even the Bungals are starting to see the light..

Injury is the only thing that can stop this little tank. Took a big shot on that 17 ayrd run.

http://www.nfl.com/videos/cincinnati-bengals/0ap2000000249366/RB-Bernard-17-yd-run
Yeah, I'd rather him not do that. He also lowered his shoulder and slammed into a defender instead of stepping out of bounds on another play. He probably gained an extra .25 yards out of it. Ball carriers that take those kinds of hits don't last long.
Between that run and his TD run where he cut back and landed on his shoulder, lots of fantasy owners like myself were holding their collective breaths. He'll learn that he has to protect himself more, but he's sure fun to watch.

I live in a remote part of the world where I am unable to watch any NFL (really any US shows at all), so I am unable to see Giovani in action. These forums are my eyes!

The consensus here seems to be that this little fellow will be a top-10 back next year - guaranteed - and maybe even this year. And there is much talk about top-5 as well. It's amazing to me how quickly Cinci has turned from a fantasy wasteland into a potentially budding jaugernaut.

With all the good news... I am wondering if there are any contrary or at least cautionary voices in regards to this train? I am on board, but in weighing exactly where I would value Gio in regards to other top-tier rbs, I'd like to have a little more of a balanced view - if there is one.

All Cincy really need is a real threat at the QB position and they are set on offense. If they are wise they will look at next years draft and see if they can grab a stub.
