RB Jeff Wilson, MIA (1 Viewer)

Dolphins acquired Jeff Wilson from the 49ers for a 2023 fifth-round pick.

Wilson fell into a lead role for the 49ers after Elijah Mitchell went down in Week 1 against the Bears. Wilson has rushed 92 times for 468 yards and two touchdowns, averaging a career-high 5.1 YPC through eight weeks. He took a back seat to Christian McCaffrey after the 49ers acquired McCaffrey in a trade on October 20th. Wilson heading to Miami reunites him with head coach Mike McDaniel and running back Raheem Mostert after the three spent the last several seasons together in San Francisco. With Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed as the only two running backs on the roster, Wilson has a chance to serve as the immediate backup to Mostert, and would have top-24 upside should Mostert ever miss time.

Remember back in SF when Wilson functioned as the goal-line back? Seems like maybe -- just maybe -- he's in for a role like that here. He's somebody you call on in between the twenties, maybe. That would be a boon for people who roster him. Miami seems to live at opponent's goal lines.

Knowing Mostert is like Glass Joe I’m suddenly very interested in Wilson now. Dolphins should have a lot of leads in the 2nd half going forward.

I still don't see where he is that valuable.

I roster Wilson in dynasty so I could be biased, but it seems every time he starts in a game it's about a hundred yards total and maybe a touchdown sprinkled in here and there. Given Mostert's health and Miami's desire to use two guys, he's reasonably valuable. Depends how deep your benches are.

Mostert getting a large majority of the carries is about to change or Miami is about to expand their current running attack which is mostly 15/70 for Mostert and then luckily they never abuse Mostert but Chase was a disaster, Wilson knows the playbook and will do well adding to our running attack. Wilson will get his own drives, sometimes they might split some time if the drive is a long one but I don't think either of them is the "goal line" RB, both can score inside the 5 yd line, there won't be a huge drop off when either of them are on the field.

Tua cannot keep throwing 4 TDs a game so I see some box scores coming up that look something like
Moster 15/70, Wilson 10/48 and there's no reason they can't each score a TD. I don't think Mostert will regress in production as much as Wilson simply expands what we are already wanting to do and I actually think Tua will have a slight dip in his numbers.

Look for Miami to try and rack 150 yds on the ground whenever they can, they'd love to run the football when they have a lead. Struggled vs Pittsburgh and needed to pick up 1st downs in the 2nd Half of that football game.
Miami has Armstead and Hunt in the top 10 at LT-RG and Connor Williams the center ranks 2nd overall amongst the starting 32. The RG-C gap is prime to run behind and I think we get Austin Jackson back at RT, not the best at pass blocking but he likes to run block, the right side of the line is looking good in Miami, did lose our LG Eichenberg but he ranks near the bottom of starting OL.

New Defense OLB-Chubb is going to help increase turnovers for Miami which will set up some short field as well.

Moster 15/70, Wilson 10/48 and there's no reason they can't each score a TD

Mostert 9/26 with a rushing touchown -- 8.60 Half PPR points
Wilson 9/51 with a receiving touchdown -- 14.70 Half PPR points

Wilson in Miami might just be a godsend for some people who held through it all.
I think they will flip flop, Wilson looked spry out there.
Miami obviously throws the ball better but you could see their offense flowing smoother with the running game working
They were 5 of 5 on their drives ending in TDs until about the 4th Q, don't think they punted

You called it, MoP. Wilson is available. In hindsight he's wayyyyy better of a pick up then Pacheco. Well, anyway I will put in claims for Jeff Wilson, Jr. in two leagues. He has a bye week in week 11 so that might scare off buyers.

Good call MoP. Seems like a 50-50 timeshare. Any reason to think it will be different going forward?

I'm so bitter with myself that I didn't see this coming. I have been a closet Wilson truther for years now. For whatever reason SFO always seemed to want him to be the guy over others with much bigger pedigrees and his only issue was staying on the field. When he did he always produced. Being traded to the team now coached by his former OC should have made this obvious. Red Zone coverage had a couple blurbs on this and covered the fact he already knew the playbook and there were only small changes in verbage he had to adjust to. and it seems obvious now.

-I appreciate you all zoning in on Miami, truth be told I don't think the RB spot for the Phins is going to mass produce FF points, but if we are talking about Xs and Os, the Miami push for the pLayoffs they eludes them so often, this was a super easy call and I'll explain further.

-Both RBs are very prone to injury and it's the main reason the Niners eventually took 2 RBs in the 2021 Draft, Try Sermon-3rd, Elijah Mitchell in the 6th, if these 2 RBs were reliable and available the Niners would not have needed to do that. And they still had to pony up all in for CMC.

-The game script favored Wilson yesterday, he's not a great receiver by any stretch but one thing you saw immediately that you didn't see when Chase Edmonds was in there, Jeff Wilson was decisive, 1 cut or 1 look and giddy up and go. He's not fast but he makes decisions quickly and takes what the defense gives, you can't ask for much more from a back up RB but I don't view Wilson as that.

-I think Mostert is really the RB2 or change of pace, he's never proven to be durable, either of them really.
-As a Miami fan, I'm happy they are splitting time since they can't seem to stay healthy and I find very little drop off if any. I'm good with Mostert getting around 10 carries, Wilson similar, if the running game is clicking then a few more carries for the hot hand. The passing game from Miami is creating big holes for the RBs even with a subpar OL in some spots.

-When you look back though, CMC acquired, the Niners also truly love Elijah Mitchell and when he is clear, I expect Mitchell to at least come in for an entire drive or two during the games to keep CMC healthy and fresh. It's obvious they needed to unload and Miami could not survive for the Playoffs with just Mostert.

Miami is still a work in progress, they are winning games vs bad teams in general, the Bears game yesterday was highly entertaining and I don't think they are a bad team on offense but their defense was brutal, almost as bad the Miami Dolphins.

I think both RBs will look good but true FF production, the ceiling seems limited for both of them. But the next 3-4 weeks while we still have players on Bye weeks, I can see why folks want to use Jeff Wilson. Don't be shocked if Raheem has his typical 15/70 next week at home vs Cleveland. Could happen.

Cheers!

Phins are fun to watch and will likely keep up putting up decent points every week. MoP, in one league I picked up Tua just when he was starting to look good, dropped him for 3 weeks during concussion scare, picked him up again - wanted Dak first but got out bid, and ended up with Tua. Pleasant runner up trophy lol. And considering picking up J Wilson. Likely won't be playing them both, but ya never know. QB/RB stack not ideal. Helps if the RB caught TD passes like an Ekeler and Kamara.

Jeff Wilson played 50% of snaps in the Dolphins' Week 9 win over the Bears.

Raheem Mostert, notably, played 46% of snaps. In other words, Wilson technically led the Dolphins' backfield in his first game with the team. It's a bullish sign regarding Wilson's role going forward, and a concerning development for Mostert. Wilson could be leaned on in Week 10 with the Dolphins facing a run-funnel Browns defense, making him a viable RB2 play.

I think this is as much about getting Mostert some much needed rest since he has been carrying much of the load all season.

Look at the snap count disparity and how Miami was forced to use Mostert because of Chase Edmonds early in the season

Game 1-42%
Game 2-55%
Game 3-58%

The first 3 games Miami went 3-0 and beat some impressive teams. Edmonds was supposed to be the RB1, Mostert RB2 but there was going to be a big time share and that number trends up for Mostert the following weeks to a point he could not carry that many snaps each week and expect to survive.

Game 4-72%
Game 5-69%
Game 6-62%

We lose all 3 of these games
71% and 65% the last 2 weeks before trading for Wilson...Raheem Mostert was exhausted.
They have a Bye week after Cleveland and I expect them to again use a split down the middle and get Mostert some rest.
3 game stretch on the road vs SF-LAC-BUF looms and that is where I feel Mostert will be leaned on more.

Set aside the dumb website/source, I was more interested in what coach & QB had to say about Wilson yesterday:

“Yeah, wow — that’s what I’ve got to say,” Tagovailoa said during his post-game press conference. “Wow. His first game with us, and he almost takes one to score. Then that same drive, he basically Reggie Bush-ed and dove for the touchdown. You don’t see that often.

“So, for someone like him to come from the 49ers and fit right into our offense like that, that tells you a lot about his work ethic, it tells you a lot about who he is as a player and who he is as a professional. So, wow.”

“Then Jeff (Wilson Jr.) was exactly what I had known from my experience with him,” McDaniel said during his post-game press conference. “He’s a big-game player that really thrives when his number is called upon, and to bring that aggressiveness and then made a couple plays in the pass game that were pretty cool.”

Clearly Tua is punch drunk here. Did he really say "Reggie Bush'ed"
That's so funny, many recall Bush was a starter for Miami 2 full seasons, put up some nice numbers
I don't know that Tua actually was thinking that when he said this.
Jeff Wilson is not going to be mistaken for Reggie Bush.
Wilson had some tremendous blocks in the passing game, i'm sure Tua was thankful for that.

Getting a feel for J Wilson shares. There's a reason he was the #1 waiver wire pick up this week. And it seems to simmer now that the week has progressed. Perhaps more like 55/45 Wilson getting the nod. I think he's more valuable than that for his knack and opportunity to score TD's. Sure Mostert may get a TD here and there too. MIA offense in general is heating up and it's like getting a piece of the pie, kind of what everyone did with TB back when and BUF. Now it's MIA.

If Wilson scores he's likely good for 15 points or so. He's also very capable of having multiple TD days too.

@Ministry of Pain - if you owned both Mostert and Wilson, what would you do this week?
1st of all, what an honor to hear from you. I heard you were still around, haven't seen you much this season...i know work work work

This is a great question and i'll break it down like this.

-Mostert was taking about 65-70% of the snaps and he started Week 1 around 47% so it was painfully obvious Miami was either going to overuse him or they needed another someone to help shoulder the load and give Mostert some rest, enter Jeff Wilson.

-Miami played Chicago, an improving team but they don't have the weapons we do right now, we expected to win that game and Wilson was a big contributor and I do think we are going to see a good chunk of Wilson again this week vs Cleveland before the Bye week and Mostert will get 2 weeks to rest and recharge. Then they play Houston

-And then Tommy, the Miami Dolphins are coming to your State of California for 2 weeks including the Bay area and paying a visit to your LLLL AAAA Chargers! Then a 3rd road game I **** you not vs Buffalo in Orchard Park and that is when they are going to need Mostert to be spry and ready to roll.

Wilson has a good opportunity to cash in this week and probably vs Houston but I don't think Wilson is going to seize the No 1 RB spot but it could appear that way on the surface.
This Ivy league McDaniel guy that landed in our laps, he pretty smart and he knows we must run the ball up as we march to the Playoffs, this 400yd/4TD stuff never worked for Marino and the Phins when they go to the ice ponds in new York and New England but this time we have a penguin to unleash on them

Wilson seems like the right move this week but I don't want to get comfy, this is going to be a split back field and as a Miami fan, i welcome it. I have Wilson, he's my RB 4/5 now, I might flex him due to Bye weeks but I think there will be a pretty even split of touches, snaps and carries for a while so they don't wear these 2 guys down before the Playoffs assuming we can even make it.

If you need more clarity or want to ask a question, fire away, i watch every snap of Miami and so do a lot of others from the Miami team thread.
Good to see you posting in the SP, Gunz!

-Cheers!

I'm in on following your Dolphins, MoP. Pysched to have landed Tua, twice. And J Wilson this past waiver wire in two leagues. He sits in a Flex in both right now unless I flop him out for Swift in another. Gibson and Pickens also on the bench. So really, I'm going back n' forth this week on Swift and Wilson, Jr. Gathering intel and how many touches Swift expected to hit. Gotta be 8-10+ for consideration I believe. Wilson likely will get 11-13.

Here's a good summary of how I feel about Wilson...he isn't likely to have a really BIG DAY, but he is likely to not burn a total hole in your roster at the RB2/3/Flex level, although i prefer a guy that is more boom or bust in the Flex.

Wilson has a limited ceiling and a somewhat high floor meaning he is likely to see the ball enough to warrant a start. All he needs is about 50-60 yds a TD most weeks and people will be doing cartwheels mostly.

What is MoP talking about? OK, let's discuss Rhamondre Stevenson, he's like RB5 overall since Week 3. I know Coach Bill doesn't like FF but the reality os Stevenson has been a goldmine.
I don't think Wilson under any circumstances can come close to that so if anyone wants to make a nice trade offer for Wilson, i would JUMP on it.
In a couple weeks, the same folks praising Wilson will be cursing him because he's Jeff Wilson and he's no more likely to see 15-20 touches than he was last week when he had 9 carries, that's right ! People going gaga over 9 carries and you know Mostert is well liked and likely to see a good amount of carries.

This is never going to be the Jeff Wilson show, it could say Wilson and Mostert on the Marquee but the Miami Dolphins and Mike McDaniel would much rather use a 2-Back approach New England does similar and I still think Stevenson is likely to see a reduction in touches. Harris is a FA next year, kinda surprised the Patriots are not using him more since he isn't likely to stay.

My son has Tua, it pushed him to trade the little dude in the desert to improve the rest of his roster so he had a free QB slot, we both have Fields this weekend vs Detroit. but I encouraged him to stick with Tua, I have Burrow on a Bye so it's different for me, Fields is a must play because of the Bye.

I'll be rooting for Tua and your sons team, and yours, MoP. Both QB's are fun to watch. My two teams struggled early with QB's and to end up with Tua and Fields / D Watson. I'm happy to land J Wilson for a Flex / bye week player I could be comfortable starting with Stevenson on a bye. Kamara and Etienne as RB's. In the Flex it was C Samuel until I landed Wilson, Jr.

Mostert 2:40...who says he isn't the RedZone threat?
They Mic'd him up for the Chicago Bears game, the first couple minutes might be rather boring if you don't actively root for the Miami Dolphins, I enjoyed about 2:00 into the video when he starts interacting more on the sidelines and talking to his team right as they are ready to kick off.

Wilson enters the picture more around the 5:00 mark, these 2 were teammates in San Fran and you can feel Mostert getting super jacked. Raheem is 30 yrs old, he'll be lucky if he can get another $3M next year to suit up again at 31, certainly Miami will welcome him back and I see Jeff Wilson likely getting some type of offer from Miami just because he's younger.

6:10, Wilson scores and I think from the reaction and him saying welcome a few times, there's not going to be a lot of tug of war over who gets what. I think whoever is feeling fresh is going to touch the football more depending on the game script.

I thought some of you might enjoy that

"This ain't the 49'ers"
"Everyone here is focused and locked in"

So McDaniel recruited him out of North Texas, he basically has known Coach McDaniel for the last 5 years. He's bragging how Miami is fun and a great spot to be working.
I did not know McDaniel scouted him in college personally, that would make a difference in my projections the rest of the season. Might seem like a small nugget of info in that video but Wilson is candid and you can see that he understand completely what McDaniel is wanting to do.

"Open Arms"

I'm getting a warm feeling about Wilson but I will add that I expect a very close football game.

The warm feeling just had me swap out Swift for Wilson, Jr. in the Flex. That's about my 10th time switching these two players lol.

That's me being bias but I gotta say, I peppered this thread with a lot of clips to arm folks with information and found out as I was making links that Wilson was recruited at North Texas while he was in college by McDaniel, that's huge and I would assume that's not completely unique but it certainly adds a little something into the mix here.
