Still a Shanahan backfield. Do not drop Wilson unless you absolutely have to.Well he sucked royally today. Easy drop after today.
Why not?Still a Shanahan backfield. Do not drop Wilson unless you absolutely have to.
Still a Shanahan backfield. Do not drop Wilson unless you absolutely have to.
Why not?
Shanahan has made it clear this is Mitchell's backfield.
Considering Sermon & Deebo got more than a few first half carries and Wilson was well below average I wouldn't count on Wilson being the lottery ticket if Mitchell goes down long term.Still a Shanahan backfield meaning the backup could be valuable if the starter goes down? Or still a Shanahan backfield meaning "Shananigans"? Wilson is probably one of the better lottery tickets to hold, because of the former, but I think Gopher and Chaka are right that Mitchell is the man as long as he's healthy.
He's who I would pick, but yeah I agree any Shananigans here apply more to what happens if Mitchell gets hurt.Considering Sermon & Deebo got more than a few first half carries and Wilson was well below average I wouldn't count on Wilson being the lottery ticket if Mitchell goes down long term.
I said it last week. The 49ers RB to own is Deebo.Considering Sermon & Deebo got more than a few first half carries and Wilson was well below average I wouldn't count on Wilson being the lottery ticket if Mitchell goes down long term.
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Jeff Wilson's surgically-repaired knee "flared up" in the Week 13 loss to the Seahawks.
Shanahan said Wilson will be sidelined for a "couple days." With Wilson dinged and Elijah Mithcell now in the concussion protocol, JaMycal Hasty is the 49ers' lone healthy back. Trey Sermon is on I.R. with an ankle injury. This backfield is a mess ahead of Week 14 against the Bengals.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows considers Jeff Wilson the "frontrunner" to start at running back for the 49ers against the Bengals.
Wilson, who was upgraded to "full" with his knee issue on Thursday, has been practicing while Elijah Mitchell (knee, concussion) sits. The 49ers trust Wilson on early downs, whereas second-year pro JaMycal Hasty is generally regarded as a change-of-pace option. The Niners also have veteran journeyman Brian Hill waiting on the practice squad. If Mitchell is out and Wilson goes, he will be a last-gasp RB2 who will probably need a touchdown to actually finish in the top 24. Hasty's workload will be a variable in Cincinnati.

I picked him up everywhere but I got cold feet today and found better options in the Flex, Lockett seemed like a better idea or I used Osborn the other night, just can't seem to find a spot for him, can't start him over Aaron Jones or Javonte Williams, he hasn't done that much when he has been on the field.Bump for game day. Playing him in one spot as I’m sure many of you are.
The Athletic's Matt Barrows writes that "If the season begun today," Jeff Wilson would again be Elijah Mitchell's primary backup.
Tyrion Davis-Price, Barrows writes, missed a chunk of the spring practices with an injury. As for Wilson, he reportedly looked much better than he did down the stretch, when he was "dealing with the aftereffects of an offseason knee injury." It makes sense for the upside of Davis-Price to be prioritized in a backfield where anyone who gets snaps looks effective, but it doesn't sound like he's made his move on Wilson on the depth chart yet.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows reports that RB Jeff Wilson is expected to start in Thursday's preseason game with RB Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) unavailable.
The 49ers' No. 2 running back job has been uncertain this offseason. Third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price appeared to be the early favorite, but Trey Sermon has impressed after a disappointing rookie season. Wilson seems to be in line to start the season as the secondary back, however. Shanahan told reporters that he was impressed with the way Wilson played through injury last season. "Jeff last year played off — to me — all heart, and he helped us when he came in. And this year he’s healthy. So to me, he is back to being the Jeff Wilson we’ve always seen." Wilson looks like an intriguing last-round dart throw as the current favorite for the big back role and with Mitchell nursing a hamstring injury.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows believes there is a "clear demarcation" between Jeff Wilson and the rest of the 49ers' backup running backs.
"I expect Wilson to get the bulk of the third-down snaps [JaMycal] Hasty had last season," Barrows adds. With Trey Sermon in Philadelphia and Hasty released, it sure would seem that Wilson has upside as a bench stash in the event of an Elijah Mitchell injury. Wilson had 13 or more carries in each of his four starts in 2021, and while Tyrion Davis-Price has draft capital on his side, so did Sermon last season.

Jeff Wilson rushed nine times for 22 yards in the 49ers' Week 1 loss to the Bears, adding two receptions for eight additional yards.
Wilson also appeared to lose a fumble but ended up getting ruled down by contact. Although Wilson was indeed the 49ers' clear-cut No. 2 running back, he had a disappointing day on an afternoon where Elijah Mitchell departed in the second quarter with a knee injury. And while Wilson was the "lead back" following Mitchell's departure, he was out-gained by both Trey Lance and Deebo Samuel, not to mention Mitchell. With Mitchell seeming likely to be sidelined for Week 2, Wilson will be worth a waiver claim, though we would expect UDFA Jordan Mason to get involved against the Seahawks, and for rookie Tyrion Davis-Price to perhaps be added to the mix after today's healthy scratch. Samuel will be the favorite for high-value touches. Wilson will probably slot in the RB24-32 range if Mitchell can't go.

26 snaps, 18 carries and they were ahead the whole way...1st thing I see is whenever he is in the game he is getting the ball and teams might catch on.
at Denver in primetime this week...that will be interesting.
Jeff Wilson rushed 12 times for 75 yards in San Francisco's Week 3 loss to Denver, adding three catches for 31 additional yards on three targets.
Wilson fumbled on San Francisco's final drive of the game, but he probably just saved 49ers fans a different painful way of seeing Jimmy Garoppolo end the game. Wilson's 37-yard carry in the first quarter set up the lone 49ers touchdown of the game, and he had an 18-yard carry that got the 49ers into Denver territory before a Garoppolo sack quickly ended the drive. While he's still a good back, San Francisco's offensive line situation is starting to look dire and that could ratchet down his fantasy value. He's best-approached as a low-end RB2 in Week 4's game against the Rams.

Jeff Wilson rushed 18 times for 74 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers' Week 4 win over the Rams.
Wilson got the scoring started for the Niners with an explosive 32-yard touchdown run right through the teeth of the Rams' defense. He looked like he was shot out of a cannon. With Elijah Mitchell (knee) injured the last three weeks and still on I.R., Wilson has racked up carry totals of 18, 12, and 18 the last three games. This was his first touchdown. Wilson is a rock-solid, every-week RB2 headed into a Week 5 date with the lowly Panthers. He's dominating the backfield work for San Francisco.

I'm not sure how the team thinks they can depend on him. He can't make it through 2 games before heading to the IR.Shanahan seems to stick with a guy. Mitchell came back last year and was the guy. Wouldn't expect much different.
When is Mitchell expected back? I thought it was later this season.
Impressive game against Aaron Donald and a great Rams run defense….Jeff Wilson rushed 18 times for 74 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers' Week 4 win over the Rams.

Jeff Wilson rushed seven times for 25 times in the 49ers' Week 6 loss to the Falcons.
Wilson's most impactful play of the day was a lost fumble on an inside run on 3rd-and-1. The fumble was returned for a defensive TD and contributed to a difficult game script for the running back; the 49ers never led in the game. Wilson should continue working as the lead back but is not involved in the receiving game in a big way, seeing just one target in this game. He will be a TD-dependent play against the Chiefs in Week 7.

Jeff Wilson is no longer the 49ers' starting running back following the acquisition of Christian McCaffrey.
Spoiler alert, we know, but Wilson's final hope is CMC either not playing or being snap counted for his 49ers debut against the Chiefs on Sunday. Although ESPN's Adam Schefter has hinted it is a possibility, we definitely would not be counting on that after the Niners surrendered four picks for McCaffrey's services. We are guessing CMC and Kyle Shanahan can figure something out together. There is no harm in waiting if you genuinely believe CMC will be limited for Week 8, but Wilson is safely droppable from a going-forward perspective, especially since Elijah Mitchell (knee) is likely nearing a return.

Should I drop Wilson and pickup Mitchel now? Oy vey.
Right. Just wondering how long as a handcuff Mitchell will last since he's always injured.Should I drop Wilson and pickup Mitchel now? Oy vey.
That probably makes sense. But Mitchel is now just a handcuff.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports the 49ers are "willing to listen to potential offers" for RB Jeff Wilson.
The 49ers "have received calls" on Wilson since trading for Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey last week. Wilson isn't needed with Elijah Mitchell close to returning and adding another running back to an already crowded backfield. Playing on a one-year deal, Wilson would be unlikely to return more than a Day 3 pick.

It’s one of the more make sense trades considering Mostert’s injury history and Wilson’s familiarity with McDaniels.I hope the Miami Dolphins try and make a move for him. If they are going to the playoffs, having both Mostert and Wilson at their disposal would be a good idea since Edmonds has been a disaster to this point minus the TDs, he can't catch or find any open holes where as Mostert tears it up.
