RB Jerick McKinnon, KC (1 Viewer)

McKinnon hurt his knee in practice today and is getting an MRI, oh boy  :wall:

Jerick McKinnon - RB - 49ers

Jerick McKinnon (right knee) will receive an MRI Sunday.

McKinnon stayed down holding the back of his knee following a hit Sunday. He was helped off by trainers and remained on the sidelines for the rest of practice. Although he was seen signing autographs on his way back to the locker room, the 49ers immediately announced that he'll go for an MRI on his right knee. The team is already without RB Matt Breida (shoulder) until Week 1. Stay tuned for updates.

I’m in a MFL slow auction redraft. Currently have him (I’m in the lead) at less than half his value (if healthy). Could go either way. If he out i lost funds. Will anyone bid? If not and healthy I’ll roster him for huge bargain!

Well, if it was major he would of stayed in the training room I think.  But he could be slowed this season
We were told the Guice injury was minor and the MRI was just precautionary and look how that played out. As a McKinnon owner I am trying to be cautiously optimistic, but I don't think we can assume anything at this point until we get the MRI results.

I’ve learned from the Guice injury not to buy into any reports about “he’s fine” until we get the MRI results.

Glad to hear the injury wasn't serious but this guy has a way of getting nicked up and under performing.  As a Vikings fan, I was not sad to see him go.

I suppose the guy in one of my leagues that picked up McNichols can go ahead and drop him.  Great news for McKinnon owners.

I guess it all depends on the level of the muscle strain. Is it the 1-week variety or the 3 month- bother you all season variety.
The fact that he can rest nearly a month if needed before the next maningful game argues for the former.

My suspicion is most of the lingering muscle issues come from players trying to rush back for a game before being fully healed.

This guy is not a heavy workload back. If Shanny uses him like one,  this type of thread will  be on the front page weekly.......

More competition/relief for McKinnon. Could be a good thing or bad thing depending on how you look at it.
I don't think it should affect McKinnon. Currently both McKinnon and Breida are sitting out and Williams has been away because of a death in his family. 49ers need someone to run the ball. I'm not sure if Morris plays special teams, if not, I can't see how he makes the final roster once everyone is healthy.

I am not the biggest McKinnon fan, but what are you basing this on?
Having watched him closely as a Viking's fan. It seemed like he was often nicked up and was never able to assume a big workload even when he had the opportunity after Peterson got hurt.

I remember that vaguely, but last year he seemed to do pretty well. He had over 150 touches in the in the 11 games after Cook got hurt and seemed to hold up well. That is only about 14 touches a game, but I think it could be possible he could up that by 4ish a game. Some guys learn how to stay healthy and not get nicked up as they get older.

How does one learn to stay healthy as he gets older?
There are plenty of ways. One way is pointed out above. Another way is practice habits, learning when a play is over, just learning how to manage your body and adjust to the NFL. Plus there is a big difference in training in the NFL and college.

#49ers GM John Lynch tells us that RB Jerick McKinnon will be out of action until Week 1 at Minnesota.

One doesn't. I seem to remember a thread about guys having to many miles on the tires and thus were more likely to break down when in fact, the guys that had a ton of carries tended to last longer because they had learned to handle the wear and tear. It's the guys that haven't had to deal with the year long grind of 250 carries that tend to get injured more frequently.

From local sports talk radio it sounds like he’s being benched until week 1 as a precaution.

That the injury is less severe than initially feared, but they’re going to bubble wrap him as it gave the team a scare.

Makes sense, if it’s more than just coachspeak.

They did run out and sign Alf though, which concerns me.

Still - Niners are one of the more honest teams with regard to injury reporting, so imma be optimistic about Breida & McKinnon starting the week 1 game.

that said, since more and more talk of RBBC, I’m avoiding McKinnon at his mid-2nd ADP.  Would be tough to pass on him in the 3rd if he slips & you went WR-WR.

I'd be very afraid if I went WR-WR and Mckinnon was my RB1.
I probably would be ok with it. Not excited but not afraid. I’d prefer Collins in standard format, but PPR I think McKinnon still has a shot to outperform early 3rd round ADP.

This feels like an overcorrection on early preseason mocking / ADP where he was as high as late 1st early 2nd.

He’s a solid 3rd round pick, IMO. He still seems to be going in the late 2nd though, which may be fair value but then it may not.

yeah i agree.  he was pretty overdrafted super early on.  now with the recent injury news hes being drafted where he should probably have been all along.

im pretty neutral on him at his current adp in 12 team pprs.  i think id be fine with him as my rb1 at lke 3.05-3.07 if for some strange reason i started ab-ajg or something.

#49ers RB Jerick McKinnon suffered what appeared to be a concerning injury during team workout today, sources tell @MikeGarafolo and me. Not good.

McKinnon (calf) suffered a non-contact knee injury during Saturday's practice, eliciting concern from coach Kyle Shanahan, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.comreports. "Something with a knee, we'll find out later," Shanahan said. "We're nervous about it, that's for sure."

Awesome.

Who's the guy to own here?  Breida with injured shoulder--does Morris step in?
Breida is clear. They love him. I think he’ll get first stab for lead back but they’re going to have to limit his usage. Morris will get work regardless what happens so he may be the smarter add.

Sorry to hear this news about McKinnon but glad I drafted Morris last night and just snagged Breida off waivers too...

I think this is huge for Breida. He has an upper body injury so you have to imagine he’s the lead back once he’s ready to go. It’s not like he’s just some plodder he has shown flashes with the opportunity he has been given.

I did go Morris before the injury. Alf has good history with Shanny in the one cut offense and looked great a couple weeks back and they sat him since.  He was going to have a role and now he’ll have a much bigger one.
