RB Jonathan Taylor, IND (1 Viewer)

Very curious to see how he runs, if you're holding him, his peak value might be today.
Uh. No. I'd assume it would increase if he comes out hits 100 yards first game out. Not saying he will, but this is far from his peak value. Barring injury.
I mean, sure. But I think his hype and value is massive right now.

He could not run well and then his value is toast.

I hope he crushes it, firing him up this week!

Have we seen a truly talented RB playing next to a running QB? Feels like all these running QBs played with 'decent' backs.

Considering what Gus Edwards has been able to do next to a running QB, I am fairly optimistic about Taylor's YPC.

Josh Downs best ball beast based on this, gotta figure between A Rich and JT, they'll see stacked fronts all day, those play actions will be pretty sweet

Downs has looked better than JSN so far.

What we need in here is less talk about Jonathan Taylor and more discussion of particular posters individual teams and their drafts
Oh my bad this isn't a fantasy football forum or nothing and how my drafting of Taylor has or has not helped/hurt my team.....................
Gotta love the “purists” who expect everyone to discuss every player in a vacuum & never ever opine on personal experience(s).

On a discussion forum. In a discussion community.

Why a snap count?

I’d be surprised by a snap count. If so, it’ll still be pretty high and, in my opinion, not worth considering relative to starting JTaylor.
Why?

He hasn't been hit in a game for quite a while.

Plus, there less likely to run him into the ground right away now. They're invested deep into this asset. It's not about increasing his trade value or running him into the ground as if he was gone next year.

I think it's easy to say he is on a snap count before the game starts. It's also easy to follow snap count in a blow out either way. Let's see how they play it in the 4th quarter of a tie ball game and he has already hit that number.

Whoever wrote this must be facing Taylor this week:

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports Colts RB Jonathan Taylor will have his snaps monitored and increased gradually.

This makes sense considering Taylor hasn’t played a game snap since Week 14 of the 2022 season due to lingering ankle issues. The current plan is to limit his snap counts and gradually work him up over the next month of play, which is likely to sap most of the upside from both Zack Moss and Taylor. Eventually, Taylor should return to a robust role but fantasy managers might have to wait until half way through the season for that to happen.

The dreaded snap count.............
I guess it’s possible. But I think the contract indicates a commitment by the colts to win now. Why a snap count?….especially against a Divisional opponent.
I think the contract indicates a commitment to have him play for them for at least the next 2 seasons and there's almost no way they're going to risk that by overusing him in his first game back.

He's practiced twice in the last 9 1/2 months and is coming off of ankle surgery. It's perfectly logical that he'd be on a snap count this week, it would be borderline malpractice if he wasn't IMO.

I'd bet on 12-18 touches this week, with probably a 50-50 shot of a TD.

I wouldn't start him over guys like Monty or Kyren, but I would over guys like Mostert or Hall.

He didn't have any leverage.

really

Mr. Irsay disagrees with you, and agrees with me. He told me this today, when he handed out a top contract to a player on a rookie deal.
What leverage did Taylor have? Sounds to me it is based purely on how they value Taylor, not from being pressured somehow to make him a good offer.
Sure, but if that's the case why not avoid the circus and give him this contract? Only if he was asking for more than that does this not look like an all-time organizational F-up.

It doesn’t matter the reason because at the end of the day both he and the Colts got a good deal. He is making more and the Colts pay 3 years and only 26M for 2 years.

I'm assuming that in the end of this journey the Colts saved money. Did it look good? Not really, but this isnt the first time an athlete and team made it ugly. Nobody outside the organization knows for sure but reading the tea leaves I'm guessing Taylor wanted way more money before this began and settled for less as life happened.

Glad this got done. Good for all parties and other RB’s as well. I’ve never seen a position devalued this much in any sport. It was getting ridiculous.
Still only getting 2-3 years and/or franchise tags for these guys. I honestly think Taylor wanted much more than this and it’s likely this deal has been on the table all along. It’s a little bit of a raise over back to back franchise tags and then basically a 3rd year option.

Great deal for the Colts.

I can’t keep up with the numbers. Does Taylor’s deal rank somewhere between CMC’s contract and the contracts Barkley and Jacobs got previously?

I disagree about this offer having been on the table all along. From everything the Colts said previously, they never even entertained a contract extension. I think that is what angered JT, as he felt he had proven himself enough to at least warrant extension talks.

When the Colts refused to do that, he made the trade request. I honestly think JT wasn't trying to become the highest paid RB in football, he was just looking for some respect from the Colts and a salary adjustment in line with his talent and waht he brings to the team.

It's definitely a win/win for both parties, especially considering what it looked like a few weeks ago.

Its 3rd in the NFL, behind CMC and Kamara.
The NFL is so hard to look at how much a player is getting paid simply by per year basis. You gotta look way deeper. They are always restructering deals. Which I always find funny. They praise a Tom Brady for restructering his deal to help the team. In most cases, that means instead of his 40 million dollar salary he is set to earn during the season he converts 20 million into signing bonus. He then only "earns" 20 million during the season. Way to take one for the team Tom. Before being traded McCaffrey converted 7 million of his 8 million dollar salary for the year into a signing bonus.. His base salary for the year was 1 million. So when u look at it he was tremendously underpaid for the year. Except for that 7 million deposit that didn't count on the books. Ha ha

In the end Taylor got 26 million. If they didn't sign him he would have gotten the 12 for the franchise tag. Then maybe hit with it again. Big risk with that. He got his money and took away the risk.

among currently active deals, he got the second most guaranteed money, after CMC. Excluding rookies, Henry's and AK's deals would be roughly equivalent, considering that those deals are a year or 2 older.

Do you really think that’s plausible? A team basically not extending any offer whatsoever for a homegrown productive player?

What leverage has JT suddenly exercised for the Colts to all of a sudden extend this new offer they weren’t willing to present before?

Absolutely. Did you see Irsay's comments back when this all started? He basically said the Colts refused to talk extension with him. And even today, he stated they gave an extension earlier than they wanted to.

I think Ballard knew it was the right thing to do for both the player and the team, and finally convinced Irsay that they didn't need the distraction/sideshow around it anymore. Or at least caught Irsay in a sober 12-24 hour period to get it done.

Reportedly Edgerrin James stepped in and got the sides talking again

That's pretty cool if true.

Starting him over....Moss. At this point, if his CAP is 15 carries and he's running well (game flow depending), they'll keep riding him because winning is all that matters.

Great deal for the Colts.

After that horrific Zeke contract, ain't no way RB's are getting 6 year deals anymore. 3-4 years is the new norm....max.

BTW I am not forcing Taylor into my lineup. New year, yes. But still needs to get some snaps and rhythm in. Plus his splits vs the Titans are truly horrific. That plus the run D, not feeling good.

So they went from offering nothing at all to $14M per year? Why?

How big of a financial risk is this for Indy?

The exact salary-cap breakdown isn't yet clear, but the Colts are scheduled to be among the teams with the most cap space in 2024. Whatever the particulars of Taylor's deal, the Colts have substantial flexibility. They've spent a staggering amount of money on veteran quarterbacks in recent years, to little avail, but the arrival of Richardson -- on a rookie contract that averages $8.5 million -- allows the Colts to gain flexibility.

Among the coming financial decisions facing the Colts will be the decision to extend wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.'s contract after the season. He is scheduled to be a free agent in the spring and has averaged 75.7 catches in his first three seasons.

Big-salary Colts players like guard Quenton Nelson, tackle Braden Smith and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner are all under contract through at least next season.
