RB Kareem Hunt, KC (3 Viewers)

Is it a given Pachecho isn't coming back? I haven't seen anything definitive.
I don't think we have heard anything definitive yet. I'm in he ain't coming back in time for it to matter camp. For Hunt rosterers that is. If you have Pacheco I probably hold until news comes out. I just think it's going to be an uphill climb for him to rehab in time for us fantasy folks. If Hunt is playing good it will be interesting for sure. I would think the Chiefs would love to have that problem. The majority of the fantasy football regular season for KC from here on out will be the Hunt show. If Pacheco gets back on the field in time for the fantasy playoffs then it will likely be pretty difficult for all of us.

I kind of don't care as long as I can plug in Hunt for two months. When we get to the FF playoffs, show me all the teams rostering Pacheco. Of course there will be many but I'd venture a smaller split.

I firmly believe Pacheco is back between week 9 and 10.

There was no ligament damage.
The bone he broke is not weight bearing. They added a titanium plate to the break during surgery. It needs to heal which takes ~6 weeks, and then it will be stronger than ever.

He absolutely will be back when it matters.

He'll be back this year but likely won't be 100% until about 6 months.

That'll be about week 30, right?

Hunt is a 3 down back

I have nothing to go on here but feelings but I think Hunt is just depth. It’s a nice story but there a reason he wasn’t on a roster this year.

Carson had 18 touches last week, Perine 9.

Could it change? Sure. My bet is Steele is the guy to have in the KC backfield for now.
I think Hunt is more than just depth .. He has chemistry with the guys, knows the offense, and has a chip on his shoulder to right his wrongs from his last stint with the franchise

Hunt was last there 6 years ago. lol.
Yeah all this bands back together stuff has been weird.

This has been interesting after the Ray Rice incident lingered; this happened.

No team wanted him.

Then he signs with Cleveland to put the incidents in KC behind him. Ummm they happened in Cleveland.

The pr work by teams was so interesting on this as they tried to navigate post Ray Rice

So, some bro in a backward cap who has bad intel (his ankle was fine and uninjured, per the doctor who did the surgery) makes a tweet and you take it as gospel? This injury is NOT like the one Mark Andrews had.

Chona is about as solid as it gets in terms of twitter fantasy docs. Harvard educated and his takes are data driven. Nobody is going to be right all the time but saying Pacheco won't be 100% until next season is what those twitter docs said pretty much across the board when he went down. Granted, the link I provided was from right after the injury and maybe new information has come to light since then.

Chona does these concise round ups a few times a week that I find helpful and he's usually pretty accurate.

I don't know him so no judgement on him overall.

The take is wrong because he's assumed the injury is the same as MAndrews' injury and we got info from the surgeon that indicated that it is not. Strangely, there has been very minimal reporting on it since. But, given what we know, the 6-8 week timeline is accurate.

I missed this. Did the surgeon say no ligament damage?
Yes. Exactly that.

It was the same day Coach Reed said he didn't know and it might be the whole year. News came like 3 hours later but it was buried by the Reed comment (which was BEFORE the surgery). No ligament damage, clean break of a non-weight bearing bone, they slapped a titanium plate over the break to re-enforce. 6-8 weeks to heal and he should be good as new (maybe more so given the plate).

FYI, for those who need to see it from somewhere reputable:
Chona didn't dispute the timeline of Pacheco's return. He said this injury typically involves a high ankle which means the player's explosiveness doesn't return until about the six month mark. That would be true with or without the fracture. The doctor who performed the surgery said there were no ligament issues (he needed to repair). I guess we will see what Pacheco is in week 8 or 10 but as a Pacheco owner I am not expecting him to be at 100% right upon return. Happy to be wrong.

You understand that a sprain is mild ligament damage, right? There is no sprain, just the break. Or the doctor missed something (possible) or just outright lied in his report (unlikely).

I expect he'll need some tone up time from being off his leg for 2 months but nothing like what we've seen with tightrope surgery folks, nothing at all like that. Pacheco is going to be stomping the ground like it disrespected his mamma come November.

He said he didn't repair any ligaments. That doesn't mean there isn't plenty to heal on it's own. But we can't really parse that either so I'd say that your take is closest to accurate in terms of the timeline. But there absolutely was ligament damage, even if just a mild sprain. And if true, with the rest and immobilization that will come with the broken leg, any mild sprains should take care of themselves during that time as well. So the timeline might look good as you say. But taking that the doctor didn't repair any ligaments and saying that is equal to "there was no sprain" is not true. Unless I missed it in there somewhere where he specifically said there was no sprain.

I think for the sake of this conversation "ligament damage" implies significant ligamentous injury that would increase his recovery time. I don't think a mild ankle sprain significantly affects his recovery. Ankle sprains heal/recover with rest. He's going to rest. Guys frequently play through

I don't think he'll be 100% where he was the 1st week back. But I don't think we should be worried about a mild ankle sprain extending it.

FWIW, I went out and got Hunt in about 1/3 of my FAAB leagues for ~25% of my budget last night. I'm not here to hate on Hunt. I'm not convinced he's going to be as good as he was in week 4 every single week. But between injuries and bye weeks--I felt like I had to take my shot on the upside.

Good RB depth is hard to find. Especially those who can be starters on winning teams. Nabbed him last night. I just don’t believe in any of their other backs. Steele fumbled away any trust. Perine is the ultimate JAG and couldn’t get the job over Steele. And CEH has been disappointing for years. Now he has PTSD on top of that? No thanks. Hunt looked the part. And if it’s true he was slowed by hernias last year and is healthy now all the better. It’s his job to lose and I don’t see RB’s like Pacheco coming back from broken legs in season very often.

Hey,

Anyone know if Hunt is injured? He's listed as questionable in my ESPN league.

:oldunsure:
He hurt his shoulder on his last run as the Chiefs were running out the clock against the Chargers .. He’ll be fine and is going to play .. They’ve just been limiting his contact in practice all week

The odds of this happening-jeez. Had a chance in every league and just wrote him off. We will see if it sustains but it’s a nice start

Does anyone view this an immediate sell high situation with Pacheco back in a month or so? I think that there is some potential to get some good long term value from a player in a trade.

I think Hunt is better than Pacheco .. His running style fits this offense better. He’s a bull and moves the chains with his front forward falling style of play and he’s nearly unstoppable on short conversions and goal line situations.

I don't agree with this personally.
I think they really complement each other. When Pacheco gets back this will be one hell of a one-two punch for the Chiefs.
Preferably a one two kick

The thing about pacheco return is...

The chiefs dont give an F about the FF playoffs-- they care about the NFL playoffs--- that will always be the target return if possible. Not your week 15 semi-final matchup.
Based on all reports , he is expected back sometime around weeks 8-10.

I saw nothing last night to indicate Pacheco is better than Hunt. If he keeps it up there is no way Pacheco assumes the workhorse role when he returns
Wel, since Pacheco didn't play, that somewhat limits your ability to see which is better.

But it's not an argument worth having. I agree with the end point. Hunt is playing good enough that it wouldn't make sense to give Pacheco 18-20 carries upon return.

For fantasy purposes...there are 2 options:

Either

A). This was his high water mark (28 touches/game is entirely unsustainable long-term), and the 2 settle into a committee upon Pacheco's return

or

B). They keep feeding him like this, happy to squeeze everything they can out of him in a short time frame, then pass that work load off to Pacheco when he gets back fresh for the playoffs.

Pacheco has certainly gained Reid's trust as the main guy, but Hunt looks very effective 2 games in. Idk which way it goes.

The armchair coach in me thinks that if Hunt is giving you everything you need to win, you keep Pacheco out of contact for as long as possible. If the chiefs start dropping games, there will be an urgency to “fix” the backfield, but if it isn’t broke…

This game was an outlier for a lot of reasons, both in workload (I doubt we see Hunt with this many carries again) and YPC consistency. Give some credit to the Saints front 7, they didn’t give up big runs to anyone all day. But the chiefs apparently don’t need long runs to win, they need a back who can get them 4 yards with absurd consistency to squeeze out 2nd and Short, goal line carries, and kill clock in the third and fourth. Hunt can be that guy, and that’s at a minimum- the big runs will come against softer front 7s.

I'm afraid he'll break down quickly like if he keeps getting fed like that. Took a ton of big shots last night. He is a real tough runner so he can take it, for awhile. I would guess that is the high water mark in part because they knew they were headed to bye.

Steele had a bad fumble. Prior week was bad cause it was at the goal line but last night was an ugly one. Only ended up causing them yardage loss but he held the ball out in a really dumb rookie way.

So my question is whether CEH gets a chance to take more than the Perine role. I see this settling into a Hunt and CEH show until Pacheco might come back around fantasy playoff time. If the Chiefs haven't locked up the 1 seed by then lol. And by Hunt and CEH show I mean Hunt show. I don't know if he can hold up though. So I'm riding the wave.

Small to moderate victory lap here. Won a ton of matchups this week with Hunt in my lineup, including a close on in my one main event.

Week 6 is All-Play week in FPC and Main Event leagues. KC is on bye. Rest up Kareem et al and we'll see you in week 7.

Short bench league, he was still sitting there unclaimed last week in our league.

Can’t wait to see what happens after the bye and they start to throw to him more. Doesn’t matter who is better between him and Pacheco. You rest Pacheco as long as you can. I don’t even think Coach Reid has confirmed that he will be back this season. He left it open so there is that….what a great find.

I get why people are excited about Hunt if you snagged him off waivers before this week, but I don’t really get how Pacheco’s 6-8 week injury is suddenly being talked about like it could end his season or be a reason for Reid to sit him until the playoffs just because Hunt played well. KC needs all the offensive firepower they can get right now. Will they rush Pacheco back to help out? Probably not, but I doubt they’ll keep him sidelined for no reason either. As soon as the docs and trainers clear him, I bet he’s back on the field. Their first assessment, after realizing there was no ligament damage, was 6-8 weeks. Reading some of the comments, some of you believe that could be close to doubled.
