RB Kyle Monangai, CHI (16 Viewers)

I posted this in the game thread as well. Before we get too excited about Monangai going forward this Bengals defense is bad, like really , really bad. And they are missing by far, their best defender.
Swift
Yeah as Swift owner, I'm hoping Monangai gets the Sean Tucker treatment. But, he was being given way more credit than Tucker before the Swift injury. But still hopefully his role doesn't change.

Yes. That was a big part of my thinking. This week we're going to hear a bunch of people talking about 50/50 timeshare going forward.

Certainly Monangai will see more work but, this is still Swift's backfield.

In fact, getting more in-game rest will probably be a great thing for Swift.
No one knows when Swift is actually returning.

We might get another RB1 week for Monangai.

Also, Swift has historically been made of glass, so there’s that.

Really a false narrative. Over his first three seasons he missed 10 games on 520 touches.

On his last 681 touches over 2.5 seasons He's missed two games. And, judging by Ben Johnson's comments, if this were a playoff game Swift might have played.

He seems to be following the "Fragile" Fred career playbook.

lol

He needed to “learn the difference between hurt and injured”, according to his coach, no?

Duce Staley pretty much hated him for that, IIRC.

Maybe Staley wasn't a very good coach.

I opted for Kimani Vidal over Monangai in my starting lineup this week. D’oh!

In Dynasty, his future looks bright. After his big week, what do you think his dynasty trade value is? Or is he a better hold?

I think Ben Johnson has always wanted to replicate what the Lions backfield is. Monangai, I think, has shown enough that Swift is very much in a timeshare now. 50-50 is possible, but I'd probably give Swift more credit than that. I do wonder if its a situation where Monangai gets GL work, and Swift gets 3rd downs, and its close to equal beyond that.

I get the argument that Monangai had a big game against the Bengals, but Swift's best game was against NO, which isn't much different.

As I said above, I think that ship has sailed.

Josh Norris
I'm a massive fan of Kyle Monangai

easy to be when he goes for 198 yards on 29 touches

He's a bear to tackle on final contact and extremely decisive on starting line and first/second level cuts

but Chicago's OL + WR blocking buy in is what made all the difference
Watching Monangai's highlights this week, the push from the bears line really stood out. They were moving 1-2 yards up field as a unit on most of the runs.

Is it bad juju to root for another healing week for Swift?
Rooting for an injury is bad juju.
Rooting for sufficient time to heal just sounds like you're looking out for D'Andre.
Well then, I am hoping they heal the crap out of D'Andre. I don't want to see him dress out until I know he is 110%. I don't care if it takes all season. Just looking out for the guy.

As a Swift and Monangai owner I am pretty certain the fantasy gods will see to it that Swift will play and both RBs will be devalued moving forward.

This is Monangai’s backfield .. Ben Johnson’s been praising him since camp and the rook exploded in his first start. I see Swift as the receiving/hurry up offense back going forward.
I don’t know - seems like Swift has been running hard himself and generating a lot of yards after contact. But we don’t see what they do obviously. I see some sort of RBBC going forward.

Monangai’s value may increase though as the weather gets colder and they want to grind it out more.

Monagai's pass protection has been inconsistent enough that Swift will remain the starter and play most downs assuming he's healthy. This may change next season, but I doubt Johnson will roll out Monagai as a bell cow back right now because he needs to protect Caleb.

Caleb can’t even protect Caleb. Monangai is the superior back.

Do you have any definitive evidence on this about his pass pro?

His poor pass pro during the preseason was all over Bears media. Most pundits loved his running ability, but thought he needed a lot of work in pass pro.

“If you’re not protecting the quarterback, you won’t play,” Bieniemy said.

Or as coach Ben Johnson likes to put it: “No block, no rock.”

Any goofs in pass pro jump out from last week? It is Week 10 now... he might have improved in that area?

I looked. Found an article that said his overall PFF grade was negatively affected by poor pass pro. This was from last game.

Here's a video of every pass attempt from Caleb in week 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS2neMrk46I
For reference, he's #25, long dreadlocks with orange shoes. Make sure you don't confuse him with DJM #2 orange shoes, short hair.
It's an all-22 video and it's helpful to me to see it that way.

Notes on Mongai based on that video:

1. He was in for true pass protection 3 times on passing downs. #1 at the 7:50ish mark in the video above, he whiffed hard on a LB. #2 @ the 8:39ish mark he did a good job chipping the DE, who was already engaged with the OT on his way to a wheel route. #3 @ the 9:30ish mark he was faux blocking on the opposite site of the field from the direction of the play.
2. He was most often not in during pass pro downs. Travis Homer was in on the vast majority.
3. When he was in on a passing down, he most often than not ran a wheel route away from the play.
4. His route running is still suspect, especially on broken or extended plays. At one point he ran around in close loop circles before giving up entirely.
5. He was notably absent on passing downs during the final play of the game.

Obviously these are hypercritical of a 7th round rookie who had an overall great game in week 9. That said, Ben Johnson clearly does not trust him in pass pro enough to put him into position to make blocks right now. That is enough for me to confidently opine he will not be a bell cow back this season. With a full season of experience and another offseason/camp, I expect he will improve most areas noted above. If so, that absolutely gives the Bears the flexibility to part ways with Swift and use that cap space at another position.

With both healthy, expecting this to turn into Temu Gibbs/Monty.
Who do you see as Gibbs?

IMO Swift is still the lead back but, it will be close. My guess is a 55%:45% split.

With this matchup both are probably startable depending on format.

Who do you see as Gibbs?

Swift has been and remains Homeless Gibbs. Just a Gai is young MontyJam.

Importantly, Ben Johnson pie could be fairly large if Caleb can keep his **** together.
I would bet against that last part. The bears schedule gets really tough RoS and Caleb won’t be playing against Cincy every week.

We need the Tyson Bagent era to begin sooner than later, for the sake of all Bears fantasy pieces.

LOL That's some serious wish casting.

It is, yes. As a holder of a couple of Bears.

But it won’t surprise me at all if Caleb gets benched at some point this season for his league worst inaccuracy and bonehead decisions. Ben Johnson wants to win games, and might do what needs to be done if it comes down to it.
