Williams will not go on injured reserve at this time. The Rams were down to Zach Evans as their only running back after losing Williams and Ronnie Rivers to injuries. The team has since added Myles Gaskin and Darrell Henderson. They also have Royce Freeman on their practice squad. Evans should get the first crack at the starting role, though a committee looks likely to form in LA.

i assume they add henderson to active roster before sunday since he knows the playbook. Im not gonna lie it does not feel like Evans will handle the lead work.

My gut says hopes that Evans is the next man up, and the other signings are in case he catches a case of fumblitis. That is, he's there until he loses the job.

I read a bit about Evans as a draft prospect and fumbles was an issue that came up in some of the evaluations.

Not sure of Evans ability but thinking whoever they turn to must be able to know protections & pass block pretty well as their not going to want Stafford getting busted up again...

Faust posted something from pff showing Evans had a bad pass protection grade from their charting FWIW.

In reading a few prospect articles about Evans I saw fumbling as a negative come up more than pass protection, but sometimes thats not something evaluators focus on much compared to other things RB do.

fumbling was the big issue with him. and given Staffords Health I dont think they want him doing a whole lot of Pass Pro unless he has cleaned that up.

but he and Henderson are the only credible option that knows the playbook. I could see Gaskin being a serviceable option for a week or two if Kyren Williams is missing more than a couple of weeks. but Gaskin wont be able to go in for more than a handful of plays as he does not know Enough of the playbook. Maybe they use him on passing downs to start to take some pressure off the kid. I admit I dont base this on anything other than personal opinion. But Gaskin has at least been a starter in the past. That counts for something

Yeah the playbooks are different. However considering McVay and Oconnell are both running similar offenses maybe it wont be that hard to get Gaskin up to speed as it would be for a RB from a less similar scheme.

That might be part of why they grabbed him over someone else.

I agree Gaskin has the right skillset. but for this week at least, we are likely looking at Evans. I could see Gaskin getting in on some situational stuff.
If Evans struggles in pass pro, I could see Gaskin learning the no huddle/3rd down/ passing situations part of the offense first so they can take this part of the game away from Evans. in theory, that could even happen this week if Gaskin is a quick study. Though I do think thats asking a lot of a guy who just joined the team less than a week prior to game day.

I agree. They need to see what Evans has got in a real game some time.

Rodrigue was in on Kyren being a bigger part of the offense than we expected. Evans is my guy but I picked up Gaskin today as well just in case (and dropped Hendo). Probably has the most “juice” between Freeman, Hendo, and himself.

Agreed. Healthiest team in my league is 6-0. His team isnt even very good. Its gotten to the point now where theres so much shared info there is very little strategy and the scores generally come down to who's team is healthier.

I don't really agree of disagree with what you are saying other then to say I think it's easy to conclude any of the 4 would be the "logical" choice. Personally I have Henderson last, for this week, but for sure I'd not be surprised if you are correct.

This is the kind of situation I'm going to be scrambling for reports all the way till Sunday to finalize my opinions but here is how I got it right now.

Freeman as the lead guy as much there is might be one. I watched all of their preseason games(because I was fairly big into Evans) and Freeman consistently was playing in games before Evans which I recall bumming me at the time. When Evans did get into games they would pull him out in passing situations, for Freeman, which again was bumming me out. IMO the only reason Evans was on the active roster over Freeman was because they knew no one would poach Freeman, it's not a reflection of some kind of written in stone dept chart.

Evans-he and Freeman are easily the best bests to be active. Without any doubt Evans has the most juice but how much has he learned in the last 6 weeks or so to go from someone they did not want on the field in passing situations when the QB was Stetson Bennett or worse to trusting him in those situations with Stafford? And would that make them predictable when he's in the game? They can have him run routes instead of pass protect, which they did last week, but again that makes them predictable and keep in mind Kyren is a big time pass protector and that's the role we are talking about him obtaining. Rodrigue before the season started labeled him as somewhat of a redshirt who was being developed for 2024. In many way's he's about as opposite of Kyren Williams as you can draw up. But he might just get in the game, rip of chunk runs and be hard to keep down.

Gaskin-probably closest comp to Kyren. Main reason I got him over Henderson is as simple as the fact Henderson is on the practice squad and they don't have to burn a roster spot promoting him. Gaskin meanwhile is on the 53 man roster and likely would not have left the Vikings practice squad for the Rams without thinking he's likely to remain there, so in other words he did not leave the Vikings to go from one practice squad to another. Some similar things in Vikings/Rams offense that should help his transition but this week will likely remain a little behind the the first two just with respect to knowing his assigments.

Henderson-My best guess to not be active for reasons I just stated which is he's on the practice squad and would take up a roster spot to promote him to the active roster which I think they'll want to hold off on doing. Should have firm grip on knowing the offense, but is he in game shape?

I agree. its the not knowing the playbook that makes me think he wont get a lot of play this week. without a doubt of the new roster additions hes likely the best player. but even good players can be suspect if they dont know the playbook. so I think his use this week wont be very high. but next week may be a different story

I'd actually be glad if I had him in dynasty, Not that he got hurt, that I can put him on IR and free up a spot because this only adds a game to what I was thinking anyway. Only places I own him are FFPC redraft leagues with no IR and 12 week regular seasons so he'll just clogging up a roster spot hoping it still matters for me if he's good to go for that last week or the playoffs.

The production was a gift, will miss it. 18 PPG RB's for close to free don't grow on trees.

If anyone is looking for a silver lining he was probably never going to sustain at his incredibly high use. If he returns healthy later and does not lose his grasp on his role he might be better at the end of the season now that he's going to take an extended absence.

I'd probably lean Henderson as well, as he has done it in this offense for stretches.

I do think the more likely outcome is more redzone passing and a possible return of WR1 overall Cooper Kupp.

Couldn’t agree more with that last part. What I fear most is that maybe IR stint stretches well beyond Week 12 and/or he comes back not as effective due to the HAS. Another concern, since he isn’t really a proven talent, is that one of his backfills (eg Darrell Henderson) does well enough to where they have a significant role even after Kyren returns.

I think we will be extremely lucky if he’s still putting up these types of numbers consistently once he returns, but I hope I’m wrong.

This escalated quickly. Went from McVay saying Williams is “going to be good. Just got his ankle tweaked at the end”, to missing Week 7 but not expected to be out long, to getting a cast on his leg and moving around in a scooter, to avoiding IR and being back in Week 11 “at the latest”, to now on IR and back in Week 12 at the earliest.

The Rams were always playing with fire with giving Williams the amount of work that they did. When he comes back I have to imagine he won’t be anywhere near that type of volume again. It’s just a matter of who he’s going to share with.

I mean, the first thing I had heard was that he was going to be hurt bad and out for a while. The first take was not positive. Somehow during the week some positive stuff came out but the first prognosis I had heard was high ankle sprain and it was bad. That's why I moved him for a 3rd. Wouldn't have been the end of the world to stash him on my IR but then I wouldn't have a QB to put in my SF spot because I had to have a roster spot to pick one up on Wednesday. I picked him up off waivers got great production while Barkley was out and then got paid a 3rd for another team to stash him. And would have the same roster problem once he comes back if I'd kept him. And I just don't see him coming back in week 12 and dominating touches right out of the gate again. If Kupp and Puka continue to dominate in the passing game, that offense can support basically any RB plugging in and producing. The prospect of him regaining his prior form after an injury like this is not good, and the job may not be open at that time if someone comes in and earns it.

Heard someone joke the farther the week went along the higher his ankle sprain kept getting.

McVay did address why he said initially why he thought he’d be ok. Paraphrasing but basically after the game he was walking ok and displaying good energy. Only later did MRI results show it was worse.

I’m grateful the litttle warrior gutted it out and gave us all he could last week.

Williams was placed on injured reserve after suffering an ankle injury in Week 6 against the Steelers. Prior to going down, Williams was seeing an unprecedented bell cow role, playing on 82 percent of the team’s snaps while handling 33 percent of the opportunities. Far from an efficient back, Williams’ opportunities were carrying fantasy managers through the first seven weeks of the season, as he averaged 18.5 fantasy points per game with four top-12 finishes. The Rams are now heading into their Week 10 bye and will return in Week 11 to face the Seahawks. If all continues to go well from there, Williams sounds like a near lock to return in Week 12 against the Cardinals.

I like to see guys prove it 1 game if I can after coming back from injury. I’ve seen it too many times where they ease a guy back in his first week back. He might get half the touches that he normally does. That’s why I say pay attention to the practices this week and see. If you’re unsure about him being a 100% full go then Singletary is a great option still
