RB Saquon Barkley, PHI (3 Viewers)

Saquon Barkley said after the Giants' Week 12 loss to the Bucs that he's getting his "feet caught back up" after a multi-week ankle injury.

“It’s just a little frustrating to have to sit out again and come back and feel like how I was Week 1 — getting my feet caught back up,” said Barkely, who rushed six times for 25 yards against Tampa, adding six receptions. “That just comes with missing a little time and getting my body back. I’m going to do whatever it takes to get my brain and my feet and my legs caught up together.” Barkley has averaged 3.21 yards per carry over his past eight full games behind New York's suspect offensive line. That's a steep drop off from his 4.8 yards per carry during his first two NFL seasons. The Giants' offensive ineptitude and Barkley's constant injury issues offers a nearly nonexistent path to rushing production. He'll have to produce as a pass catcher out of the backfield if he's going to deliver for fantasy managers in the season's final six weeks.

He doesn't have his legs under him. I counted no less than 4 times he ran, made a cut and seemingly lost his footing for no reason/just fell down. Nice to see him admit it post-game though, no "I just need to run harder/execute" athlete-speak.

There was at least one time where he ran towards the line and stopped... like didn't make a cut or maneuver back or slow down he just stopped for a second or two.
It's called the RB Yips.  He is like MMA legend Chuck "Iceman" Liddell.  Everyone feared him until Quinton Jackson KO'ed him in 2007.  He was never the same, developing a glass chin and finishing his career going 1 - 6.

So did he get nicked up again last night, or did they simply pull him halfway thru the 4th QTR to save him for 3-5 years from now for when the team starts to improve?

If Kitchens is smart he will find a way to get Barkley 20+ touches. Bad line or not, Barkleys super elite talent should be the focus of this offense every game when you have Daniel Jones. Regardless of game script. Feed the talent, dont force the sucky players to make plays.

FWIW, I compared Kitchens' usage of Chubb/Hunt in 2019 to Stefanski's in 2020. I counted Rush Att + Pass Tgt per game and divided by the team's # of plays per game (so rough estimate in that they must have run more plays when they had both Chubb and Hunt, but this I could figure in a minute). I counted Chubb/Hunt getting 54% of the plays with Kitchens compared to 51% with Stefanski. I had thought of Kitchens as more of a pass-happy coach, and he was a little bit, but the Browns passed to their RBs.

What value should a rebuilding team in dynasty or devy get for trading Barkley?  Or should the rebuilding team keep him?  After all, he is only 24.

Saquon Barkley (ankle) is questionable for Week 12 against the Eagles.

Barkley noted that he expects the injury to nag him throughout the season but that he expects to play Sunday. Barkley played 62% of snaps in his return from injury and could have a bigger role in his second game back. The Giants are very likely to be more run-heavy this week, moving from a Buccaneers' defense that shifts teams heavily to the pass to a run-funnel Eagles defense. Barkley remains a high-end RB2, despite his frustrating season.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Saquon Barkley (ankle, questionable) is expected to play in Week 12 against the Eagles.

No surprise here as Barkley played last week and then logged three limited practices. He was officially listed as questionable but was always expected to play. Barkley played 62 percent of the Giants’ offensive snaps last week but should see his role ramp up as he gets back to full strength. Expect 15 or more touches in a competitive game versus the Eagles this week.

He is just a really really bad player as a whole, all context included.

Talented players make things happen. This is multiple OCs who just dont trust to give him the ball.

He has 9 carries in a game they lead by 10. They didnt even give him the GL TD.

I do not play fantasy, this has nothing to do with that. Im just a bitter Giants fan who is angry we wasted an early pick on this guy.
I have spent the last week bashing Saquon in here, but you couldn't be more wrong.  Obviously you didn't watch him during his rookie season.  He is a physical specimen who just happened to suffer some injuries, and now he seems to be waiting for his next one.

RG3 had a good rookie season too.

Injuries ruined his career and made him a bad player too. We doing the you must not of watched him schtick?

Clearly you aint watching him now, right now, which is what matters...not the past.

I understand people see how he was in college and as a rookie and think he is a the same player, but facts are he isnt a game changer and thats what physical specimens should be.

If you're a redraft Barkley owner and you have other options in the RB2/Flex range, what are you doing with him going forward?

I am starting him as RB3/Flex as I think he has a higher floor and ceiling than Collins, but he's been absolutely miserable this season.

Thank God Fournette has emerged or I'd be totally cooked at RB.

Have been using Saquon as my RB2 but may have to rethink going forward. Javonte would be next man up, and he has a cake schedule ROS, but of course you're always dealing with a limited ceiling with him. On the other hand, with Saquon you're dealing with a very low floor.

Also have Chuba but not sure he's trustable, especially with his schedule, so don't see starting him over Barkley.

I'm in a guillotine league so I have to constantly assess his $ value in comparison to other studs. I do not believe he is a top 10 back. I believe he is a top 20 back with upside but has not proven himself back yet so most likely he sits on my bench unless he has a good matchup.

I currently have him between Hubbard / Jacobs in number 18. He's somewhere in that tier. He has more upside than Jacobs / Hubbard though but I think he'll score like them.

  1. Taylor
  2. Harris
  3. Ekeler
  4. Mixon
  5. Fournette
  6. Patterson - Think this guy is underrated. Most probably have him lower.
  7. Mitchell - underrated. He has so many good games and a good schedule. As long as he's healthy, he's a stud.
  8. Conner (assuming no Edmunds)
  9. Kamara (assuming hes back next week)
  10. Robinson
  11. Elliot/Pollard - worried about timeshare going forward
  12. Montgomery
  13. Chubb
  14. Henderson
  15. Dillon/Jones - I assume Dillon is the one you want but I can't tell with this.
  16. Williams/Swift - I assume Swift is out multiple weeks but I prefer any of the Dillon/Pollard/Mattison above Williams.
  17. Hubbard
  18. Barkley
  19. Jacobs
  20. CEH
  21. Gibson
  22. Gaskin
  23. Hunt
  24. Gordon/Williams
  25. Carter (injured)
  26. Harris

Possibly playing matchups with he and Javonte.  Eli Mitchell now my RB1.  Aaron Jones my RB2...flexing one of those others (and now Pollard in for Jones for this bye week thinking he gets more work this week even if Zeke plays).  Unless I am able to grab Mattison...in which case he is my co-RB1 with Mitchell.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I have Barkley a bit lower. I think I'd put him below CEH, Gibson, Gordon/Williams, and maybe even Gaskin. I was surprised to see some of the rankings for this coming week.

Moment of truth… who is starting him today and what are your expectations?

I think I have to start him over Henderson and Robinson due to them being late game time decisions.

and not sure Williams is any safer versus Minnesota. Just hoping Barkley volume gives us a decent day in ppr. Fine with 10 points or over ppr.

15 for 50 rush 4 for 15 receiving.

Sitting him for Mattison, Mitchell, and Javonte.   Yeah...with playoff spots on the line...my RB corps is now guys picked up off the FA pool (Javonte dropped by someone midseason who had bye and injury issues).  All while Aaron Jones is on a bye, Barkley still meh after injury, and Carson on IR.

This week those guys are all top 10. I would take those guys over Henderson Robinson and Williams in a heart beat this week.

11 carries (and a bunch of terrible targets) while Mike Glennon has aired it out 38 times with give minutes still left in the game.  This entire organization is clueless.

I can't imagine he's even close to being 100%. Hopefully, this isn't his NEW 100%. Devontae Booker looked better than this version of Barkley.  I kind of wish the Giants would just shut him down and hope for the "Old Barkley back next year.

Definitely lucky to have them with how other things went this year.  THis week...paid off huge to keep me in the hunt.

Looked to me like he is still on a pitch count.

Hes pretty bad. Dregs like Gallman and Booker have both put up high end RB2 #s the last two years with this same cast of characters. Heck it's hard to tell him and Booker apart right now.

What an epic bust by Gettleman. Funny though in the debate between him and Darnold we thought we'd be having for years the answer was neither.

How badly do you guys hate Barkley? Is his upside truly gone and he is worthless now? Or is everyone just venting? Like if you had to choose to drop either Barkley, Robinson, or Henderson who do you choose? This is to make room for Montgomery in PPR Guillotine league.

I'm definitely still bitter about the fact that I took Saquon over Taylor, but even in the context of my adjusted expectations he's been pretty bad. Looked like he was getting back on track before the ankle injury, but for whatever reason he's done nothing since he returned.

Between those three I would drop him before Robinson because JRob has shown he can produce in a dysfunctional offense and Saquon hasn't (plus the Giants are about to get a whole lot more dysfunctional with some combo of Fromm/Glennon finishing out the season).

I know its probably not for this thread, but I still think Darnold would have been a lot better, if the Giants had drafted him, and instead of being thrown into the fire, he got to sit and learn from Eli for a year or 2.

Sam Darnold? Ah no, no, no... that's a bust. And it happens (a lot). Hardest thing to predict is long term QB success in the NFL. Nobody can see it... NOBODY.

On Barkley, it looks to me like he is on a limited snap count ROS. I saw a few plays from Sunday's game and it looks like he knows exactly when he's coming out and not ready to go right back in (not spelling him, but purposely not playing him). Whether it is due to injury, conditioning, trying to preserve an asset, or what ever.

Seen this in their last two games... he'll bust a run towards the NYG sideline he immediately takes his helmet off and starts walking towards the bench. Almost like a "OK, that's my 2nd carry this QTR... I'm done for a while" kind of look to it.

Not saying he would have been good or anything, just saying he would have been better.

FYI, just so we have the actual snap count numbers:

Week 1 - 29 / 48%

2 - 58 / 84%

3 - 60 / 86%
4 - 56 / 89%
5 - 6 / 9%
6 - 0
7 - 0
8 - 0
9 - 0
10 - bye
11 - 36 / 62%
12 - 52 / 87%
13 - 49/75%

Booker had 39%/14%/0%/11%/88% before Barkley injury  36%/17%/35% after

At least A and B, and probably D.

I respectfully disagree. Darnold strikes me as the type of QB that was good enough to throw to wide-open WRs in college, but hesitates in the tight windows of the NFL.

NFL QB is arguably the most demanding job in professional sports. There are few that are truly good at it and even fewer that excel. The rest are journeymen... career back-ups or bridge-loans... and I think it is impossible for the best talent evaluators in the business to predict until the NFL bullets start flying.

If we're looking at S. Darnold vs D. Jones... I would say that there is plenty of proof that both are destined to be back-ups for the rest of their days. Maybe a notch above 3rd string (emergency) QB, but neither strikes me as a potential "winning" QB IMO.

Saquon Barkley (ankle) was "limited" in Wednesday and Thursday's practices.

Barkley, who probably won't get in another full session the rest of the season, will presumably be removed from the final injury report on Friday. Barkley is heading into an A+ matchup with the Chargers' soft run defense, but doing so alongside a passing attack in injury and production disarray. That is going to make sustaining drives difficult, and renders Barkley a mid-range RB2 despite the Bolts' ground struggles.

Saquon Barkley (ankle) does not have an injury designation for Week 14 against the Chargers.

Barkley (ankle) was limited in practice all week, but the lack of an injury designation indicates the Giants are likely just managing his practice reps. Barkley will likely be operating in a Mike Glennon offense or, worse, a Jake Fromm one, which makes him a low-floor option. However, Barkley is facing a weak Chargers run defense, and it seems very likely that the Chargers will be interested in running as much as possible in this matchup. Barkley profiles as a boom/bust RB2.

Dec 10, 2021, 5:02 PM ET

Saquon Barkley rushed 16 times for 64 yards, catching all three of his targets for 31 yards and a touchdown in New York's embarrassing Week 14 loss to the Chargers.

Barkley gained 22 yards on New York's opening drive but was put to bed thereafter, gashing Los Angeles' front-seven for 13 yards in the fourth quarter and simultaneously surpassing 60 yards rushing in a game for the first time all year. His 18-yard touchdown reception from Mike Glennon with 4:33 remaining in a 37-7 blowout made Barkley's box score more respectable. Attached to one of the league's worst offenses, Barkley remains a weekly touch-based RB2 with little explosiveness.
