RB Ty Johnson, NYJ (4 Viewers)

I grabbed him up - dumped Deion Lewis.

Usage is already looking solid - 12-15 touches a game?

KJ gets hurt he’s a feature back.

Good lottery ticket with a high floor.

Do you see TJ as carving out a role in this offense even if KJ is ready to roll most weeks? If KJ were to miss time, would Ty be an auto-start at Flex?
100% yes, though the Lions won’t - they love RBBCs. Maybe they bring back CJ.

But he could be the lead back in whatever they throw out there.

I'm starting to think that maybe just a small group of us on here are interested in TY.  I'm not hearing much buzz in general.
I think until the masses see the big picture of CJA’s release and what it means for TY’s touches, there won’t be a buzz.

He’ll likely be on a lot of WW add lists next week if he gets 12-15 touches this weekend.

Definitely an under the radar/writing on the wall pickup.

I love the enthusiasm but there's an awful lot of hype over very little here. Johnson is the starter, sure an injury could thrust TJ out there but trying to hype this guy and cash in on some box scores...let's follow the snap count over the next few weeks. I think this is a bunch of hot air. He's not pushing KJ out the door so this is simply a COP and how much he can do with fewer touches...I have one of those with Cohen as my RB3/4-Flex, what is Ty going to offer for most owners? It's a lottery ticket, maybe at the end of your bench or if you own KJ, in fact he is worth the most to KJ owners.

I'm not cutting Mel Gordon for this guy and that's my RB stash for later in the season. I wouldn't cut Peyton Barber for this guy either right now. But I'll add him to the growing watch list on my league site.
If your league was deep enough to roster C.J., then it is deep enough to roster T.J.  IMHO

He can definitely carve out a role in the absence of Theo, Zenner and C.J.

hes a backup behind a starter with a little injury history who can also have value now...

Ok, some buzz perhaps:

by RotoWire Staff

(17 hrs ago) Johnson will take over as the Lions' No. 2 running back after C.J. Anderson was released, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.

Johnson was efficient but not overly productive for Maryland in college, generating 7.7 YPC, 506 yards and three touchdowns in his senior season. The rookie sixth-round pick impressed during limited action Week 2 versus the Chargers, rushing six times for 36 yards and catching both of his targets for six yards. Johnson has the foundation to be a stud as well with a 4.26-second 40-yard dash, and the Lions clearly feel comfortable with him if they released Anderson. The Lions fed Anderson 16 touches through the first two games, and Johnson figures to absorb a good chunk of those moving forward, although he's still playing second fiddle behind Kerryon Johnson.

Points taken, but it's not like KJ is a stud. A stash like TJ is attractive simply because of his upside. Part of it is if something happens to KJ, but long-term, I'm looking past that.

Nobody really knows what TJ can do. He wasn't used a lot in college, but RBs have come out of nowhere before. It's not like it would be a shock. From what we've seen, it wouldn't be a huge surprise if TJ outplays KJ. Not saying it's likely, but TJ really has some things going for him.

The bottom line is KJ MIGHT not be good enough to hold TJ off. I'm not talking so much about redraft, but long-term. That's the attractive part to me.

I picked up Ty for $6 WW bid late August.... 12 Team PPR Dynasty.  He went untouched in our Rookie draft.

Since CJA's release, I have received a few "low ball" offers for Ty. Dontrell Hilliard or D'ernst Johnson - my choice for Ty (I own Chubb).

Best offer I considered was A Mattison (I do not own Cook), but he wanted a QB swap also....

My view - Ty offers COP, home run threat and could see 8-10 touches/game in support of KJ.  I do not see Ty getting more than 30% load without significant KJ injury.  There was a pre-season report on how CJA's legs looked good, but he could not pick up the offense.  Did not make sense to me at the time, since is has experience with several OC formats, but maybe they expected more from him in packages.  Could not find the report ... too old to recall source 🧓

What size league was this? Do you know what the runner up bid was? Is this a deep bench league?

I have my FAAB running tonight and want to get him.

Thanks!

16 team league, start 2 RB (and only 2).  5 bench spots.   There were other bids at $5 and $4 so I barely got him.

I think this is a good take. I’d up the touches to the 12-15 range, but obvioisly that’s game-flow related. Right now I see him as a Reddick-type COP.

And I’ve rostered / started Reddick several times over the years in PPR and had flex value return.

Verdict: he’s an add in Redraft for sure.

It'd be easier to get excited about this guy's potential if he wasn't on the Lions.  That team's backfield has been a fantasy wasteland lately.  Their top fantasy RB has finished in the RB30-40 range the last 4 seasons.
:goodposting:   Gotta be reserved for deeper leagues IMO.

I'm stashing Justice Hill right now, he's like my 6th RB until I drop Mostert when Coleman comes back. Would it be better to use that spot on Ty Johnson?

I dropped Justice for him but as a KJ handcuff.  In a bubble, I’d rather have a piece of the Ravens than the Lions.

Yes I am or even as say a 60/40 split so KJ doesn't get abused. Can he carve out one of the better COP roles like you see in Chicago, SF, Houston, multiple backs get touches and opportunities. I'm not a Patricia fan however they are better maybe even a lot better than they were last year. I liked them to upset San Diego last week and I think they will continue to improve. I like Stafford as an above average QB, they have talent at WR and TE, this offense could be pretty nifty if it all comes together.

I don’t think Ty has a worthwhile fantasy role if Kerryon is healthy. The Lions will use 3 backs and play slow.

Lions seem to want a Carson Penny type situation. But they better run block way better than last week to achieve anything like that.

LOL. 5-10, 210 is a COP back and 5-11, 211 is not. Maybe it's the other way around and they want the guy that runs a 4.37 40 and runs over people as the starter and the slow guy who gets hurt a lot as the COP.
I’m a Ty owner and that is even too bullish for me.  Kerryon has earned a lot of trust and can keep Stafford upright.  Let’s walk before we run.  Let Ty earn his way up in carries if he can...

I bet the Lions sign a running back tomorrow.  They basically have 3 passing down running backs right now and none are bigger than 210 pounds.  Maybe Jay Ajayi?

For better or worse, they have made a concerted effort to stop their former way of being obvious with their formations. Teams saying they knew the plays before the lions did based on offensive packages. Unless of course you see the fullback out there on 4th and 1.

4 for 5 running and 1 for 0 receiving in a game where Kerryon had 20 carries.

McKissick had a flukey scamper for 44 but that was his only carry as well.

Are we sure Ty is going to get looks? It's one game, but seems like the team is committed to Kerryon as their workhorse. This game was close throughout -- maybe Ty is only valuable when the game is in hand (and how many times are the Lions going to be in that position).

Only one game, but are we still sure gambles on Ty are going to pay off?

Seems new more of a handcuff for the sometimes injured starter than a week by week play.

So what happened with Ty?   Everyone thought when CJ was let go that Ty was the clear #2 but it’s starting to look like Detroit may have just been making room for McKissic.

Neither Ty or McKissic have looked like the clear #2 there.  If Kerryon goes down, who steps up?  Does it become a split backfield?

I still think it’s Ty and he’s looked okay on limited touches.

Ty Johnson handled 10 carries for 29 yards, tacking on four catches for another 28 yards in Detroit's Week 7 loss to the Vikings.

The yardage wasn't there, but the rookie was Detroit's clear-cut workhorse without Kerryon Johnson (knee) available for the majority of play. Pending the latter's availability, Johnson needs to be prioritized among Week 8's waiver wire pickups. The sixth-rounder also got goal line work sans Kerryon throughout.

Is anyone surprised Kerryon is injured? This was only a matter if when, not if
We have yet to see how badly Kerryon is injured and how much time he may miss -- if any.

He was back in after he first got injured, and was on a stationary bike after getting taken out -- seems that if it was a serious injury, they wouldn't have him on a bike.

His injury didn’t seem serious last year either and he was out all season

Fwiw, Marquise Brown finished the game after his injury but has missed the last 2 games.
