You do realize that the Lions ran 77 offensive plays right?Touchbacks, Jerome Simpson's hot hand and a disjointed offense essentially rendered rookie wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson a non-factor during his NFL debut, which the Vikings vow to rectify in Sunday's game at Soldier Field.
Patterson's only touch on offense last week at Detroit was a 10-yard screen pass for a first down that helped set up Adrian Peterson's third rushing touchdown, but the first-round draft pick surprisingly played only five plays in the game.
"Cordarrelle will get more snaps during the course of (this) game," receivers coach George Stewart said of Sunday's matchup at Chicago. "He's our future. He's going to have more opportunities to make plays as we go forward."
Minnesota had only 19 offensive snaps the entire first half thanks to Peterson's 78-yard touchdown run on its first play from scrimmage and several sustained drives by the Lions. And Simpson proved invaluable to quarterback Christian Ponder, as the pair connected seven times for 140 yards, Simpson's most productive game in almost two years.
"The guy he was playing behind was hot," Stewart said of Patterson. "That's like Michael Jordan shooting threes. It's hard to replace that guy with a rookie."
Patterson wasn't the only playmaker who stagnated on the Vikings' sideline. Greg Jennings had only three receptions for 33 yards, and Pro Bowl tight end Kyle Rudolph was limited to two catches.
"I'm just trying to get better every day, and when the opportunity comes, maybe I can show what I can bring to the table," Patterson said this week.
His patience also was tested in the kicking game, where the rookie had just two returns, for 54 yards, because the Lions' Sam Martin boomed five touchbacks.
"I had my little 'Don't be frustrated' talk ready and I didn't have to use it because he was locked in and he was ready to roll," Vikings special-teams coordinator Mike Priefer said. "He just knows that when he gets his opportunities he needs to be ready for them."
Patterson is not limited to playing two-receiver sets, so if the Vikings plan to spread out three or four receivers to challenge Chicago's defense, he should have more opportunities to be targeted.
The former Tennessee receiver is unproven, having played only one year of Division I football, but he is a high-value asset. The Vikings traded second-, third-, fourth- and seventh-round draft picks to the New England Patriots in April to re-enter the first round of the draft and nab Patterson with the 29th selection.
Stewart said Patterson is fully acclimated to the Vikings' playbook and that the rookie "has excellent football intelligence."
He just needs more chances to show it.
"Every young guy thinks this is college in some respects, that you're going to show up and be better. And some guys are better," Stewart. "He's working hard every day to rhythm up with the rest of the guys in the league. Obviously, he's a talent. He's going to help us win football games."

I cut him to make room for another player. While I think he may do OK (I'll keep and eye on him on the wire), he does have Ponder throwing to him. With Jennings and Simpson ahead of him...not sure if that offense throws enough to warrant a roster spot for him on my team right now.Cut him loose in FFPC, can't see ever starting him this season.
Same here, chopped Patterson for Andre Roberts in a redraft. If I'm going to have a WR3 I'd rather have the one with the better QB and better offense, and one that actually plays.I cut him to make room for another player. Bob,hilton and gordon were two of the top rookie WRs last year...
hilton only had one reception in first two games combined last year...
gordon in first month went 2,1,3,1 receptions...
Unfortunately, it's about the only way he's going to be able to score this season (at least with Ponder at QB).kickoff return TD (105 yards).
I disagree, because I feel that Patterson is the kind of player that that could complement Ponder's lack of talent. Get him on short outs, bubble screens, or end arounds, basically high percentage completion plays, and it's obvious to everyone that he has the talent and physical ability to house it. I think it's somewhat of a mystery why the Vikings haven't utilized this obvious asset yet. I do think that time is coming though.Unfortunately, it's about the only way he's going to be able to score this season (at least with Ponder at QB).kickoff return TD (105 yards).
I'd take a chance on the potential of Patterson over an average Joe like Roberts any day.Roberts is a veteran in a much better situation. Not sure why you would have had Patterson over someone like him in redraft ever. Good move.
That said I do not expect the Vikings to try the Bears downfield as much as they did the Lions. The Bears are better overall defense I think, but if they are soft it is on the line or linebackers. So besides running a ton, Which the Vikings will always try to do, while the Cardinals will not, I also see them trying to get the ball to receivers in space and more screen game. So Patterson may be more involved.
Dynasty I likely would have Patterson higher than Roberts, but it is close enough that I am not entirely sure.
Percy Harvin was a stud in Return Yardage leagues his rookie seasonBob,hilton and gordon were two of the top rookie WRs last year...

Are you trying to say rookie WR do not have a very good track record of instantly producing?
I seem to recall hearing this somewhere before.. like 25 or so years ago (and every season after).. I think it was on a FF rule of thumb list, but I could be wrong.
Of course there are exceptions, such as Quan. But yeah generally rookie WR do not produce right away. If they do in their rookie season it usually takes awhile.
Bob Magaw said:i actually think roberts has some talent, but his production will be inconsistent, as are pretty much all WR3s...
we agree patterson has a chance to make some noise if he gets the opportunity...
whether he will is the current redraft debate...
below is article that suggests he could be due for an increase of snaps in near future...

I love the kid in dynasty but if he see's an uptick in playing time and targets this week I'm probably going to be looking to grab him in redraft leagues.Yeah I get the feeling it's coming and he'll start to be worked in a lot. I'd be looking to trade for him in redraft if he's rostered, or pick hi up.Bob Magaw said:i actually think roberts has some talent, but his production will be inconsistent, as are pretty much all WR3s...

Grabbing him this week before it's too late. Could get some targets, rushing attempts and return yardage (he was supposed to replace Harvin) If he doesnt do anything before the bye I'll drop himBob Magaw said:i actually think roberts has some talent, but his production will be inconsistent, as are pretty much all WR3s...

Coach Leslie Frazier reiterated that first-round WR Cordarrelle Patterson will see more playing time going forward.
Vikings OC Bill Musgrave is the same coordinator who couldn't, for the life of him, figure out how to keep Percy Harvin on the field. Through two weeks, explosive all-purpose playmaker Patterson has played 11 snaps. "It's just an oversight on our part; a major oversight because Cordarrelle is a playmaker," Frazier said. "He should be out there. We've just got to get him on the field." Patterson can only play the X spot, which is Jerome Simpson's position. Frazier said they'll look at moving Simpson around some, thus creating opportunity. Look for some manufactured touches for Patterson this week and a growing role going forward.

I mean, wouldn't it really just take a hamstring tweak for him to see the field in place of somebody? The Vikings have openly stated they want to get him more involved.Cut him loose in FFPC, can't see ever starting him this season.
A popular bad one then, like KC Donnie BrascoI think he'll be a popular waiver wire pickup in redraft after this week.
I think you're right. He's going to have a big game at some point this year. Maybe it's on a gadget play or two, but it'll happen. Who knows if he'll repeat it, but he'll be more involved going forward.I think he'll be a popular waiver wire pickup in redraft after this week.
I dropped him to pick up Rainey. Was regretting it thinking someone would grab him. A guy picked up Jerome Simpson instead. Ill probably get him back when Rainey does nothing. So nobody thinks he's worth a pickup in redraft? Was interesting to read the bikes say essentially the exact same thing after week 1. Still it's one of those headscratchers. I mean, Jerome Simpson? Like all of a sudden he's going to be a great receiver? Seems like they have to start this kid sooner or later.
But when do you think he'll be startable? Or do you view more of a good longshot hold for a week or two?I definitely think he should be picked up in redraft
Really? Maybe Ponder might be the reason?I think long shot hold. There's at least reason to think they will get him more involved and if he does something with those touches he could carve out a real role.
I was thinking he's a hold till about week 6 or 7 to see if he can do something. If you can of course. He might be startable in the second half of the year.
People have Vincent Brown, Marlon Brown, guys like that rostered. I don't see why Patterson doesn't have as much upside as those guys in the second half of the year.
Ponder is bad, but he's not Blaine Gabbert. Those other guys are nothing more than high risk flex plays - don't see why Patterson can't be that in a few weeks.Really? Maybe Ponder might be the reason?I think long shot hold. There's at least reason to think they will get him more involved and if he does something with those touches he could carve out a real role.

Your'e right. Ponder has never made a WR fantasy relevant.Really? Maybe Ponder might be the reason?I think long shot hold. There's at least reason to think they will get him more involved and if he does something with those touches he could carve out a real role.

Cordarrelle Patterson played on a season-high 19-of-79 snaps in Sunday's loss to the Browns.
Patterson saw a grand total of 12 snaps in the first two weeks combined, so seeing 24.0 percent of the snaps is an improvement. He produced two catches for 49 yards on four targets. Patterson is going to be a weak fantasy play until he gets closer to 50 percent of the snaps, but that time should eventually come. Jerome Simpson has struggled since his Week 1 demolition of Lions rookie Darius Slay.

not so sure about thatAt the very least, he should throw downfield more than Ponder.
I think he's a good stash regardless of the QB situation. There really isn't a better WR stash in terms of upside for the second half of the season IMO.Does anyone else consider Cordarrelle a good preemptive pick-up/stash this week? It pains me to say this but I think Matt Cassel is probably an upgrade over Ponder. At the very least, he should throw downfield more than Ponder. Cordarrelle is an explosive WR and I wouldn't be surprised to see things start clicking for him on Sunday.
