RB/WR Ty Montgomery, NE (2 Viewers)

I mean, if people want to ##### that he didn't play in this killer matchup that's cool, that's their business. But to act like we didn't have the info to mitigate this bad situation at all, that's just disingenuous. Unless you're in a weird league that locks later game bench guys when the 1:00 games start, if you ####ed up you ####ed up. Most people didn't get stuck with a goose egg.

 
When men were men? you mean the men that now cannot tell who their grandchildren are? or are dieing from the ailments from pushing themselves or being pushed by society and the game? The ones that are now pennyless because they didn't make anything? Both of you need to shut up and not post anymore of this crap.

ATLANTA -- The Green Bay Packers, already without their top two running backs, now have to play without their two receivers who have moonlighted at running back.

Packers receiver Ty Montgomery is inactive for Sunday's game in Atlanta because he dealing with a kidney-related ailment, sources tell ESPN's Josina Anderson and Ed Werder.

One source said Montgomery "observed blood in his urine" after taking a blow in last week's game, but he's feeling better now.

The Packers rested Montgomery Sunday as a "precautionary" measure.

Montgomery took most of his snaps out of the backfield the past two weeks.

Obviously I pulled Monty out of my lineup when I heard the news but it does seriously blow. I was counting on him and now stuck choosing from the droppings on the wire with only 4 games left. Not an impossible situation but not excited to pick up Sanu or Sproles just to have a play. Wish we had known by noon

 
If it's a kidney stone, it's like peeing sand spurs. Most painful thing I have ever dealt with.  Feel it going down the back and out the weiner. Once it passes he should be ready to play a day or two later.  For his sake, I hope it's something else.

 
I had a kidney infection once. The most painful night of my life. Antibiotics took care of it but I didn't regain my appetite for a few days.

 
Montgomery not concerned with health issue

ATLANTA - Green Bay Packers wide receiver Ty Montgomery was inactive against the Atlanta Falcons with an illness he does not believe will influence his ability to play football moving forward.

The illness, according to a report from ESPN, is a kidney-related problem. The report went on to say Montgomery "observed blood in his urine" after a tough hit in last week's win over the Chicago Bears.

A league source told the Journal Sentinel and PackersNews that the decision to hold him out of Sunday's game was precautionary.

"I don’t want to go into too much detail," Montgomery said in the locker room after the game. "I want to try to keep it as personal as possible."

When Montgomery was made aware of the ESPN report, he said the information could not be denied.

"Like I said, I don’t want to go into too much detail," Montgomery said. "You know everything gets somehow related to the sickle cell trait. Fortunately, not everybody experiences symptoms. Unfortunately, I had to deal with some of those symptoms and I’m just taking it day by day."

Montgomery said the team monitored his status throughout the week with the hope that he would be available against the Falcons. He was on the field with his teammates during warmups and watched the game from the sideline.

There is no concern, Montgomery said, of a long-term issue on or off the field.

Without him, the Packers once again used a running back by committee approach: Fullback Aaron Ripkowski had six carries for 34 yards; running back Don Jackson had four carries for 10 yards; newcomer Knile Davis had three carries for 4 yards.

The leading rusher, though, was quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who scrambled his way to 60 yards and a number of crucial first downs.

Pending health, which is always the key, yesterday's game reinforced what Ty brings to this offense.  Jackson's been with the team all year and got 4 carries in a game they were leading, against a defense that's weak vs. the run, and where the game plan might call for keeping the ball away from Matt Ryan picking apart GB's destroyed secondary.  Knile Davis was "up to speed" and "part of the game plan" and whatever -- 3 carries for 4 yards (what a stud).

Ripkowski leads the team in carries and yards...

This is Ty's backfield when he's healthy.  Hopefully that's next week, given all the comments about no long term concerns and him being close to playing.

It sounds like the kidney ailment is related to his sickle cell.

Now we need some doctor to explain what that is saying... however...

In addition, however, the use of ACE inhibitors has been associated with improvement of the hyperfiltration glomerulopathy. Also - I guess there's some difference between sickle cell trait and sickle cell disease, which I'm not sure which one Montgomery has... doesn't *sound* like a long term thing though.

Never saw this coming. Sorry guys. My info was limited on what was going on... and it sounds like he was keeping it hushed up best he could. I ended up with a zero and probably a loss because I had no one else to play for him because of byes and everyone else on my bench played at noon. 

An "Infarctive Episode" is basically tissue death resulting from lack of blood supply. A Myocardial Infarct (MI) is a heart attack. Where the muscle of the heart dies because it does not receive blood. So basically an area of the renal medulla, which is the area that filters blood, is not receiving blood supply to stay healthy so it dies. Sounds kind of serious TBH. That's the extent I can help decode medical jargon. I'm not a urologist. 

However, it should be noted that this is documented as blood in the urine resulting from a hard hit against Chicago. This may happen more frequently than we probably all realize across the league, but for someone with sickle cell it may be more difficult for them to heal from it, so it may very well be not a long term issue. Just will take more time for it to heal for him. 

It would make sense he could not go if this was the case. He basically had kidney damage that was not healed. He could take another shot and that's bad news.

The bolded is kinda what I was thinking as well.  The medical lingo makes it sound horrible, but no one on the team has given that impression yet.

The fact he almost played and was even warming up pregame has to be indicative that it's not that serious.

I would be shocked if he didn't play next week unless an unforeseen setback occurs.

Not sure if the first was even true. It would be easier for me to believe that GB knew he was out all along but saw definite value in letting the Falcons staff think that he was likely to play.

Regarding your second comment. I wouldn't be shocked at all if this had more lingering effects.

Still not seeing it.  I think a Starks return means the run the ball a little more...but I don't think it cuts many snaps from Montgomery who has shown his value coming out of the backfield.

And Starks better have improved while he has been out...he was pretty bad to start the year.

 
Not surprise at all that players keep ailments covered up. From another thread I posted in the other day, some would say this is not possible, things like this some players dont want to get out. I'm surprised they didnt cover it up with a hamstring or ankle injury somehow to avoid any suspicion of personal issues. Some players are unable to lie though, some are, so this is good to see they didnt circumvent the injury report either. I know of a player right now in the NFL lying about his leg injury to cover up a STD he acquired, so its good to see some teams are above lying on the injury report.

So, is he ready to play this week is the question. Seems if Jordy is hurt, he may be the player we thought he would be last week, this week.

 
I would say the cutting of Knile probably speaks to not expecting Montgomery to be out long term, but perhaps that's just wishful thinking on my part...

I disagree. I think cutting Knile speaks to how they feel about Ripkowski. He fills the Kuhn role better than Kuhn could today. We haven't' seen that yet this year until just recently when they've been forced to use him more. He has grown a lot since being drafted. He looked lost last year, just weak. Now he looks like he's hitting holes hard and taking/giving some nice hits. 

Ripkowski/Jackson/Montgomery is "good enough for now" I think. And when Starks comes back it's just another guy to take some carries. Jackson isn't terrible but he's not great. I think Ripkowski is the best of the HBs, including Starks. Montgomery is great in his role and the most effective weapon, especially for fantasy purposes.

Packers completed their first trade for a player since I think 2010 in getting Knile and you think they're going to trade for someone better than him 2 weeks later? And give up substantial picks in the process? The same GM who wouldn't give up a 3rd round pick for Lynch all those years ago? The price for Ingram certainly would be more than a 3rd. 

No. Never will happen. Keep dreaming. This isn't MLB or the NBA. Trade deadline is so overblown/overrated in the NFL. The biggest name traded last year was Vernon Davis and he amounted to not much more than a role player.  

 
I said "or" and "maybe" and have no interest in "dreaming" it up as I dont want to see the Pack get another RB as Monty will serve just nice.

 
Should we be concerned with Ty's illness going forward?  I mean he was out during pregame, from what I read, running around.

He had an injured kidney, and because of a blood abnormality this healed slower than normal resulting in a high risk of a ruptured kidney if he took a hit just right. He was warming up, wanted to go, and GB determined best to just play it safe. In these cases they will often take urine samples and test for presence of blood. They could have been waiting until the last minute to test his urine to see if there were any traces of blood. My guess is that came up positive and that was the final word on if he played or not. 

From what we've heard, this wouldn't threaten his career; he can still play with it, but the team needs to be cautious with organ injuries

There was a Milwaukee Brewer several years ago who has herpes and would end up with mysterious injuries from time to time to cover up his flare ups. It happens. Reason I know this is I know someone who contracted it from him. For Milwaukee women, it was a good day when he was traded away...

Ugh. Wish we got to see him play last weekend; wanted to see where he fit in the carries ratio. I personall don't think he will be used as a RB any more than one more game. It surprises me that people think he will still get snaps when Starks comes back. The Starks/Jackson/Ripkowski combo isn't any better when you add Monty. Let him catch a couple out of the backfield, but don't have the poor guy run it up the gut if he doesn't have to.

 
I am glad we know what we have with Montgomery now as far as illness and its not unknown for us. I am hearing Nelson hurt his wrist, any updates on that?

I see no reason why they can't use him in a Riddick type role out of the backfield. They seem inclined to keep their best offense talent on the field, and this means making room for Monty.

 
I'm not worried about Montgomery's role at all.  People act as if Starks was this stud RB... he was playing horribly this year, and the Packers nearly let him walk in the offseason. 

Again - Rodgers has said RB is Montgomery's best position.  The team has said they drafted him with a thought of moving him to RB, just hadn't felt the need to yet.  They've thrown him through a crash course and into the fire, and in the two games he played, the offense hummed along.  Ripkowski looked good this weekend in a Kuhn-type role, which probably keeps him involved in a short yardage and goal line capacity.  Maybe Starks takes the scraps Knile and Jackson were getting, but to me the fantasy play here is Montgomery... and honestly his handcuff is probably Ripkowski... at least that's how I'll be approaching it.

With all of the injuries and issues with RB around the league, I think Ty has one of the more secure roles at this point.

 
Everything I read says Montgomery is set to play? I got burned last week in more ways than one!

Plugging in Montgomery in my Flex with Blount on a bye. He is playing, Packer fans or Sharks or Bloom?

Good outlook for his production this week?

6-8 carries for 40 yards / 5-7 receptions for 40 yards and a TD?

 
All reports are that he is playing. I'd estimate your projections are about right. In PPR I would think his floor is about 13-15 points.

 
I'm deciding between Ty and AR15.  Right now I'm going with AR and hoping they get things right with the new OC.  I'm just not comfortable going with Ty based on last week's scratch.
