Rented - Charlie Wilson's War.It was ok. Not great not the worst movie I've seen.

Would have been better with better casting. I like Hanks, but he was wrong for the role.And I always hate Julia Roberts.

How much of that was "truth"?I didn't realize it was "based on a true story" but we all know what that could mean..

Quite a bit of it. Who knows what was artistic license and what wasn't though.

Gee, I just don't watch nearly as many foreign comedies as dramas, or I don't like much the ones I do. Some that are at least a bit comedic and I'd highly recommend:

Mostly Martha (don't be fooled by the fact that this was remade into a presumably horrible American movie with Catherine Zeta Jones) (Germany)

Elling (Norway)

Il Postino (Italy)

Monsoon Wedding (India)

Eat Drink Man Woman (Taiwan)

Goodbye, Lenin! (Germany)

Delicatessen (France) (probably not good unless you like dark comedies)

My Life as a Dog (Sweden)

Persepolis (France, animated)

The Triplets of Belleville (France, animated, musical)

The Wedding Banquet (Taiwan)

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Spain)

My second tier would include Italian for Beginners, Mediterraneo, L'Auberge Espanole, Late Marriage, The Dinner Game, Ma Vie En Rose (not the one about Edith Piaf), Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, and Kitchen Stories.

Haven't seen 5 on the list.

"anchorman: the legend of ron burgundy" last night. that's an awful lot of will ferrell in his "blustery manchild mode" to consume, i think. perhaps too much. the wife and i laughed at times - the news team gang fight was the highlight - but it was pretty "ho-hum". i couldn't help but marvel at how slender and threadbare a plot it was. i think i'll stick to his other work like "stranger than fiction".

That movie and 40 Year Old Virgin are dumb, but they were better for me the second time around.

Persepolis - Excellent film. Great animation. Gripping story. Two thumbs up, all that.

Paranoid Park - Terrible. A glorified skate video. Awful acting. Van Sant needs to get over his man-crush on damaged young boys and go back to what works. This doesn't.

Caught part of a doc about Christopher (?) Doyle, the cinematographer based in Hong Kong. Worked with Wong Kar-Wai on a movie that I've long considered one of my top 10, Fallen Angels. But at this point in time, I have absolutely no recollection of that movie... anybody else see it and/or enjoy it as much as I did when it first came out?

I was surprised we didn't get slow mo of the pigs eating the prisoners. The graphic violence was way over the top and really unneccesary. Ruined what little story there was.Was he trying to make some kind of statement?

By the way, I liked Audition a lot. So I am not saying that Oldboy is just as good. I do think that Oldboy is certainly on the same cutting edge that Audition is, though.

I'd say the same thing about myself. I've seen enough graphic violence in film to last two lifetimes. My point (maybe I'm not making it very well) is that Oldboy isn't just mindless violence. The plot, script, cinematography are all solid.Still, given what you said about violence, I am sure you wouldn't like Oldboy. And even though I am not a fan of that kind of extreme violence, the movie isn't The Crow and it isn't a Michael Bay schlock-fest.
