Brothers

Agree with almost all of KP's review. Very emotional but the story isn't deep enough for it to ever be "great". Some great acting by McGuire and Jake G. Very believable as brothers. Not nearly as gritty as the European version. Portman has never looked better.

What didn't you agree with? What did you think of the oldest daughter's part?

Also, watch for McGuire to give Norton a run for his money with the crazy eyes towards the end. Looks like Norton after the 'curb stomp'.

Mostly just the miscast part. I thought all the roles were great. Didn't think I'd buy Jake G as the black sheep, but it worked. Not sure what kind of crime he committed to end up in prison for so long. Didn't act like a doper at all, wasn't a drunk, and didn't seem to hang out with the wrong crowd. McGuire crazy eyes were intense, especially with him being so underweight. Sam Shepard also played the role of the father perfectly, probably could have been in the talks for Best Supporting Actor.

Oldest girl was very good in her role, she could have had just a little more to do.

One of those films where everything is in place so well that you really don't know just how far it will go when it comes crashing down. By the end, I thought it could have went just a bit further.

Just got done watching Brothers:

This movie might be the anti-Hurt Locker. Brothers is all about attempting to explore the damage left behind back home when a husband/father gets shipped to war and comes back. Predictable plot of Toby getting shipped out, shot down and presumed dead. Enter Jake (his brother) who's been in his shadow to fall for his wife and his family. Toby comes back after being tortured and broken down to commit a terrible act. Drama ensues. The ending was blah, but it packed enough emotional punch to tell others to give it a try. I think some of the characters were miscast, notably Portman, but overall the acting was decent. I dare anybody with kids not to be moved by the job the oldest daughter did.

While I accused Hurt Locker of being too much one way, I think this movie did too much with the emotional side and it seemed like they were trying to beat you over the head with the impact these people feel on their lives. Both movies were average, so it might be worth seeing another type of war movie if you dug the Hurt Locker.

I am very skeptical about this movie. I saw a scene out of context where Toby Maguire freaks out and trashes his kitchen, and the acting was awful.

Two movies:

The Promotion

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I expected to hate it. But as usual, John C. Reilly plays a character so genuine, it's hard not to like him. The movie had some real laughs, and despite all the cliches, I think the content is not crass.

Heartburn

I only rented this because it has Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. What a pile of garbage. Five seconds into the movie, that lame, plucky 80s style music starts, and I said, "Uh oh." Then I see it's based on a Norah Ephron novel, and I knew it'd be ####. I liked When Harry Met Sally. But Ephron penned the horrible movies You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. I watched about 10 minutes of this junk and then fast forwarded through the rest.

Sure. But I don't think Maguire is the appropriate caliber actor to play a scene like that.

For a miniseries of it's time attempting to cover a story of The Stand's magnitude I think it was decent.The Stand really belongs on the "should be remade" list.

The opening scene to Don't Fear the Reaper was awesome.Molly Ringwold, Miguel Ferrer, and Bill Fagerbakke weren't bad at all.For a tv miniseries, this was pretty awesome.

Damage

If you enjoy the ole' 80's and 90's one man wrecking machine movies with the likes of Segal or Van Damme, you'd probably enjoy this. The fights could have been better if Steve Austin could do anything but punch, but at least there aren't any hokey piledrivers or Stone Cold Stunners. Walton Goggins as his shady manager was pretty decent, I'm always stoked to see him get work. Austin should have known better than to get a manager that shares a name with a city. Laura Vandervoort was gorgeous.

i liked the beginnning. ending was meh.you can't compare this to a theatrical movie.

Far and away my favorite film of 2009.

The essence of Wes Anderson transcends perfectly to the animation. Clooney, Murray, and Schwartzman all provide top notch voice work. Feels just like you are flipping through the pages of the book. Not for young children, it will scare the crap out of them, even more than Where the Wild Things are.

Warning: This is basically an R rated script with all the swear words replaced with the word "cuss". You'll hear things like cluster-cuss, what the cuss?, and the cuss you are.

I just went through my netflix rating list of everything from 2009 I gave 5 stars to, Extract was on that list. While not on par with any of the other 12 listed. It is a very watchable film that amused me. It does feel amateur, but that only adds to the allure for me. Much more appealing than the big budget comedies Hollywood tries to jam down our throats.

I liked Extract a lot. Judge will always be held to the impossible standard that Office Space created. But with Extract, you have an original movie with some laughs and some silly, clever dialogue. It doesn't appear that Judge is interested in making movies that will make an audience roll with thunderous laughter. But if Extract is any indication of Judge's future output, I am happy.

See here's the deal...I watched it and I can tell you with 100% conviction it wasn't "awesome". It may have been a big event in '94 but this movie was a visual and audio abomination; the likes of which I have never before seen.

You will find this is the case of almost any film I give a very high review on. Stop motion photography scares the crap out of a lot of young children, I have a buddy my age that still can't watch Rudolph because of the Abdominal Snowman. Add in the dark nature in general of a Roald Dahl literature, and the main theme of the film being killing chickens and in turn the farmers wanting to kill the fox and any creature it associates with, and its about as dark and violent as a PG film could get.

This is visionary work and the best adaptation of a children's book I've ever seen. I don't blame most adults and children for not going for Anderson's snarky form of humor, though.

If you enjoyed films like The Life Aquatic and Bottle Rocket as much as I did, don't discount this as standard children's fare. This is the sharpest Anderson has ever been as a director.

Swingers

Finally saw this movie, and didn't like it all that much. Vince Vaughn was great, there were some genuinely funny scenes, but the movie just felt terribly unrealistic.

Some background info on how Vaughn and Favreau became friends would have been nice, made no sense to me that Vaughn, Sue, and all those guys from LA would bother to be friends with Favreau who is completely different than all of them. I also find it hard to believe Favreau's character to be a comedian, guy shows absolutely no confidence throughout the film but he has little trouble making jokes in front of crowds? Not to mention his character says nothing (intentionally) funny the whole movie. Overall the amount of holes in the plot took away from the cool/comedic scenes in the movie for me.

IMO you are overthinking this movie. IIRC, Favreau was friends with Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingston in NY, and thats why them and the other couple guys hung out. Favreau's character was basically the antithesis of a comedian, and thats part of what makes it funny. Lets remember this came out nearly 15 years ago and during the swing fad (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin Daddies, Brian Setzer, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, etc) and doesnt necessarily relate to everything 2010 - although I think the movie still holds up after the years. Love this movie, and I dont think Vince Vaughn will ever top his performance in this. Tons of great scenes, although my favorite one is probably the pre-barhopping, getting delivery, and playing NHL94 and making Gretzky bleed scene.

Shutter Island- nice visuals of course, but sadly I knew the story in the first frame... exactly the same as Twinkle Twinkle Killer Kane, a movie I saw as a kid that I remember liking (Stacey Keach). Really liked Di Caprio in this along with Ruffalo. Even knowing the story, or at least the "story", I still enjoyed it.

I think the "real" storyline is a lot more blurred than people seem to realize. There's only one scene that would lean me towards believing one storyline over the other

I'll probably forget a few, but the rundown of mostly meh movies Ive seen recently includes:

2012.....I liked it more than any blockbuster of recent memory besides Star Trek probably, but thats not saying much. For a 2 and a half hour movie where nothing really happened the first 45 it kept me surprisingly entertained. Felt a little light on the disaster scenes and couldve been made more interesting if they showed how other countries/cultures where dealing with the situation. Even if everything sucked, hard for me to not at least mildly enjoy a movie with Cusack and Ejiofer.....6.6/10

The Box...The premise really interested me when I first saw the preview, but the execution overall fails. Basically, you could watch the first half hour and the last half hour and not miss anything, as well as making it far more entertaining at the same time......4/10

Extract...Really enjoyed it. Despite Bateman playing the same character 80% of the time, he's still funny. Same goes for Kristen Wiig. Ben Affleck can be good in small doses, and he succeeds here. I didnt compare it to Office Space or Idiocracy going in, and I wouldnt after seeing it either. Treat it as a singular movie, and it's easily one of the best comedies of 2009...8/10

Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever....For as much as I love the first Cabin Fever for being hilarious and so bad its good, this one was just so bad its terrible. No laughs, no intensity. Despite being the lead name of the cast, dude from Boy Meets World is in it for like 87 seconds. The worst movie Ive actually finished since I can remember...0.7/10

Assassination of a High School President...I tend to enjoy movies based in high school, and I liked this, but something about it makes me feel like I think I liked it more than I really did. The story is interesting enough and the lead kid did a decent job, but its nothing all the special. Mischa Barton getting nekkid is easily one of the highlights. It falls way short of recent high school movies like Brick or Charlie Bartlett though IMO....5.5/10

The Soloist....Foxx and Downey Jr were both entertaining and solid as usual, Foxx was especially good and convincing. Despite that, by the end of the movie (or even halfway thru) I really didnt have any sympathy for Foxx's mentally ill, Juilliard-trained character. I really wanted to like this, but everything about it makes me understand why its release was pushed back out of "awards season" and into a february-march theater release. Definitely a movie where the whole is less than the sum of its parts. The only reason Id recommend seeing this would be for the 2 lead performances....6/10

....I think Im officially quitting my fling with redbox and going back to my first love, netflix.

Dream Girls

Like most musicals, this was well under my radar on release. I had no idea what the storyline was and was under some pretty seriously misguided preconceived ideas what it was about. I thought it was a Vegas showgirl musical...

Anyway, I had a HDDVD of it that I had never opened and popped it in last night, thinking it should get my new audio setup a decent musical workout. Wow. The soundtrack and the whole film was WAY WAY WAY beyong anything I was thinking it would be. Eddie Murphy gave an incredible performance. If he was not Oscar nominated, he was robbed. Phenomenal career performance by him. Beyonce and how the heel had I not heard of Jennifer Hudson? gave some great performances. Also a a craeer role for Jaimie Fox. He was the perfect Barry Gordy doppelganger.

THis was one of the best come out of no-where, blow me away unexpectedly movies I've ever seen.

The T.A.M.I. Show

THis happened to be pbs on right after I finished Dream Girls. THe actual filming of Diana Ross & the Supremes seemed so crude an unglamorous compared to the stunning presentation I's just seen in Dream Girls. It was kind of depressing at first, but the James Brown set was absolutely one of the best live musical performances ever filmed. His rendition of Baby Please Don't Go is amazing. ANd the final set of the show by the Stones is pretty incredible, too. You can see the madness and scary things watching Brian Jones, but it was a hoot watching a teenage Keith Richards, Really fine film here, too bad its compromised by the extremely poor audio.

Men Who Stare At Goats

The way of the Jedi as taught by the church of Lebowski. Light fare that relies more on characters than plot. I'm not sure why this received such lukewarm reviews. It was exactly what I expected. Clooney doing what he does best. One of my top 5 of 2009.

I caught Goats earlier this week. I really liked it a lot. It was engaging and the leads were top shelf. I enjoyed the story and recommend it. But for some reason at the end I kind of felt cheated. There was no satisfying payoff resolving what I had just viewed for 90 minutes. I liked it and recommend it, but the third act kind fizzles out and saps it. If it had been up to the standards of the first hour, we'd be talking oscars. But as it is... good, funny and well-intentioned, but a little too far from the bullseye.4/5 stars

The bolded makes me think you didnt see this sober + combined with you being pumped for your new stereo system = you probably overrating this movie....although if the movie is actually that good, I almost want to see it because I dismissed it as well as something I wouldnt enjoy.Kidding aside, I do believe both Murphy and Hudson were best supporting actor Oscar noms, and if not oscar, at least the Globes and/or other major film awards.

Even if Jamie Foxx was great in this, his role as Ray Charles in Ray is and always will be his career role/performance.

I've seen the rest of these films and liked them so per your recommendation I'm going to check out the two I've never heard of .

IMO you are overthinking this movie. IIRC, Favreau was friends with Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingston in NY, and thats why them and the other couple guys hung out. Favreau's character was basically the antithesis of a comedian, and thats part of what makes it funny. Lets remember this came out nearly 15 years ago and during the swing fad (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin Daddies, Brian Setzer, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, etc) and doesnt necessarily relate to everything 2010 - although I think the movie still holds up after the years. Love this movie, and I dont think Vince Vaughn will ever top his performance in this. Tons of great scenes, although my favorite one is probably the pre-barhopping, getting delivery, and playing NHL94 and making Gretzky bleed scene.

Stephen King's The Stand - I'll start by saying I like MOST of Stephen King's work, even when turned into movies, EVEN when turned into made for tv movies. That said, this was so bad I couldn't even finish it. That atrocious.

The opening scene to Don't Fear the Reaper was awesome.Molly Ringwold, Miguel Ferrer, and Bill Fagerbakke weren't bad at all.For a tv miniseries, this was pretty awesome.

Molly Ringwald was awful. She was the part of the miniseries that I did not like at all. Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe and Miquel Ferrer were the standout players. Along with Ray Walston.I really enjoyed it

Law Abiding Citizen

Not bad. Didn't know much about it except what I remember from the previews.

Pretty decent movie. Little over the top on the belief scale, but for just pure movie watching enjoyment I would rate it a 6.5/10

Just got done watching Brothers:

This movie might be the anti-Hurt Locker. Brothers is all about attempting to explore the damage left behind back home when a husband/father gets shipped to war and comes back. Predictable plot of Toby getting shipped out, shot down and presumed dead. Enter Jake (his brother) who's been in his shadow to fall for his wife and his family. Toby comes back after being tortured and broken down to commit a terrible act. Drama ensues. The ending was blah, but it packed enough emotional punch to tell others to give it a try. I think some of the characters were miscast, notably Portman, but overall the acting was decent. I dare anybody with kids not to be moved by the job the oldest daughter did.

While I accused Hurt Locker of being too much one way, I think this movie did too much with the emotional side and it seemed like they were trying to beat you over the head with the impact these people feel on their lives. Both movies were average, so it might be worth seeing another type of war movie if you dug the Hurt Locker.

Just saw this last night and really enjoyed it.

Shutter Island- nice visuals of course, but sadly I knew the story in the first frame... exactly the same as Twinkle Twinkle Killer Kane, a movie I saw as a kid that I remember liking (Stacey Keach). Really liked Di Caprio in this along with Ruffalo. Even knowing the story, or at least the "story", I still enjoyed it.

I think the "real" storyline is a lot more blurred than people seem to realize. There's only one scene that would lean me towards believing one storyline over the other

Just saying that I saw essentially the same movie already under a different name and knew from the git-go on the ferry ride to the island what was going on. Finally saw this movie, and didn't like it all that much. Vince Vaughn was great, there were some genuinely funny scenes, but the movie just felt terribly unrealistic.

Some background info on how Vaughn and Favreau became friends would have been nice, made no sense to me that Vaughn, Sue, and all those guys from LA would bother to be friends with Favreau who is completely different than all of them. I also find it hard to believe Favreau's character to be a comedian, guy shows absolutely no confidence throughout the film but he has little trouble making jokes in front of crowds? Not to mention his character says nothing (intentionally) funny the whole movie. Overall the amount of holes in the plot took away from the cool/comedic scenes in the movie for me.

... 'holes in the plot'... really not that kind of movie. And yeah- it's funny because he's an unfunny comedian... also unfunny to have to explain that.

Whip It: Really cute, fun, good movie. Both the wife and I really enjoyed this. We actually have a roller derby league here in Denver that we're going to go to (but can't this next week due to an Asylum Street Spankers concert! )

Green Zone

Good war thriller with Matt Damon. America, #### yeah! Nothing new here, but a very entertaining movie.

How To Train Your Dragon

Pixar has been setting the bar high for kids' films for years now, and this is the result. I liked it a lot. This is easily as good (or better) as a lower-tier Pixar movie like Finding Nemo. Beautiful animation and a story that is very satisfying. Highly recommended to parents with kids six or older..

I know my original post was pretty long... but dig through it and you'll find the name of the movie buried there in boldface somewhere towards the middle.As for the second part- "actual" truth, So by saying it's plausible last post- I guess I was saying I bought the storyline... but on quick recollection, only to a degree.

We saw Up finally... ... kinda underwhelmed. The lifelong montage was beautiful, but I feel like the tone of the movie became too adult and serious without particularly handling the adult themes well enough in a narrative sense. IMO, tried to straddle the kids/adult realms but didn't do a good enough job with either. Beautifully animated... genuinely. Still better than 99% of what's out there. Liked the more kid/comic elements... really wanted to see more of the bird and Doug and less of the kid/ed asner/pack of dogs. I still think Fantastic Mr. Fox was a far superior movie across the board.

did anybody else think the photo montage at the end was going to head into Hangover territory?
