It's funny how old movies are never as funny as the generation that was 15-25 at the time of the movie's release thinks they are.

The Jerk, Caddyshack, Airplane!, etc. These are iconic movies from my childhood that I adore. But when I see them now they just aren't funny anymore.
Saw Caddyshack about a month ago and it was just as funny as I remembered, if not funnier. Top 5 comedy of all-time imo.
Hey, I'm in the minority here. So there's that.

Part of it is the language in these movies. I remember seeing R rated movies as a teen and being totally stoked that there was a lot of cussing and crude humor there.

Did it hurt when your soul died?
;) :lmao:But I do agree with jdog here. I don't laugh at Caddyshack.

The only scenes I don't laugh at all involve Maggie.

I understand this...does physical comedy still make you laugh? I think it's even funnier to me now in my late 30's. Kramer is more funny to me now....the scenes with Nordberg in Naked Gun make me cry...etc.

Yeah, physical comedy still kills me. I watch The Three Stooges with my little boy all the time. And while George Costanza is my favorite Seinfeld character, Kramer's pratfalls still crack me up after watching the show a millions times.I love Airplane and The Naked Gun, so I am still a fan.

Airplane is still awesome and hilarious and holds up very well IMO
Out of the movies mentioned, Airplane definitely holds up. Airplane and Bad News Bears are two "older" comedies I'd consider timeless.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Not horrible for a summer  flick, but nothing special. Still not sure I buy Jake Gyllenhaal as an action star.

3/5.

Series 7

Reality show mockumentary people drawn at random to hunt each other. Pretty good stuff, but it was released when Survivor was pretty much the only one to lampoon. Some parts are very graphic and disturbing but worth a watch if you like intelligent, dark comedies. Filming style reminded me of Cops.

3.5/5

Good Will Hunting Watched it again. It is easily one of my all time favorite 5 movies. Every time I watch it I find another scene that blows me away. This one was when he and Skylar are @ the bistro. She's doing her work...struggling. She asks him how he can do so much. He explains that he "can just play." Great scene.

I haven't seen Series 7 but it seems like an American version of the Japanese film Batoru Rowaiaru (Battle Royale) which I thought was a very interesting film.

Battle Royale was higher concept and executed better, but I just didn't really care for it.

:goodposting: Looked like it basically had the budget of a Sci-Fi channel reality series which is kind of hard to work with, but I'm convinced this could have been done better and probably will be soon enough. Like the mockumentary type feel to it rather than an actual straight forward film.

Re-watched this on HBO in high def. Love this movie. To me, it's every bit as good as Goodfellas. Brilliant movie.
I remember having this on VHS as a kid, the huge 2 tape edition. As a result I've seen the first hour and half about 100 times and the last hour and a half twice, because it's so depressing. The corn field scene is probably the most gut wrenching scene I've ever sat through.Still gotta go Goodfellas though. :lmao:

What about the original The Longest Yard KP?What's the complaint there?
Never seen that either. I think I realized awhile ago that I never seem to love sports movies, so I probably haven't seen as many as most around here. It's not to the level that I hate them, but I can't remember seeing won that I thought was great. People ##### about Titanic - "well, you know the boat's going to sink". Also works for probably 95% of sports movies - you watch Miracle, and you know WTF is going to happen at the end. I just always find them meh b/c like jdog stated, they are full of cliches, and they are predictable.
I would put The Longest Yard very close to the top of my all time best sports movies list. I am having trouble coming up with one I enjoy more. Rocky, which is in most ways not cliche, comes close. I was serious about Horse Feathers too, but as a Marx Brothers movie it has obvious appeal for other reasons, ditto for M*A*S*H. They're both great but not truly movies centered around sports.I think TLY is definitely worth checking out as a true sports comedy. Although I think Major League is hysterical so what do I know?ETA: Not sure I see many similarities between Major League and Bull Durham.
I would put Seabiscuit at the top of my sports movies list. Seven Oscar nominations, but it was released in 2003 when LOTR was rewarded for the work done in the entire trilogy. Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper were outstanding and I think Seabiscuit is one of the most underrated dramas ever released. The racing scenes look and sound fantastic on blu-ray too.
I have never had any desire at all to see Seabiscuit but this post is changing my mind. And get prepared for some Krippling; I'm two months behind in here. :goodposting:

Just saw A Serious Man and this is easily the biggest piece of crap I've seen in a while.

Maybe my expectations were too high since it was the Coen Brothers.

A wimpy schmuck lead, obnoxious kids, #####y wife, deadbeat brother and an abrupt ending.

I'm shocked it was this bad. :goodposting:
I'm not surprised that someone wouldn't like this movie. But I am surprised to hear that a Coen fan doesn't like this movie. A Serious Man was 100% Coen.
Personally I find that Coen brothers movies get better after repeat viewings. It's been awhile, and it's difficult for me to imagine I ever felt this way but I am pretty sure I didn't really like The Big Lebowski the first time I saw it.I think Raising Arizona, and Fargo are the only ones of their films that I truly enjoyed on first viewing.
This is a good point, and I wonder if I should give A Serious Man another try. I attempted to watch it on a plane, which might have had an effect, too. But I agree with the first poster.

Tonight's fare was Oldboy .

:2cents:

I'll write more tomorrow after I digest it more.
:lmao: is right.
I really need to take notes while I am watching movies. By the end of the movie I was spent, and just had the general "now that was ####ed up" feeling. However, I remember at the beginning of the movie thinking that there were some impressive shots in the movie and feeling that it was well filmed. Then you have the squid, the 'twist', etc.. and that what you are thinking about at the end. I'll probably watch it one more time for a rating, but that's about it. Very glad I finally got around to seeing it though.

Anybody watch the director's other movies?
:goodposting: It was crazy and wore/grossed me out but was extremely well done.

I post here because Jdogg, Krista, Karma, Kenny Powers, cosjobs, and saintfool do. (Sorry if I left anyone out I converse with a lot)I value the taste of this thread more than 99.99% of the internet.
 Lots of people whose opinions I trust, much more than any "known" movie critic, who give me great suggestions I would not otherwise have had.But I wouldn't care if someone called me a movie snob. I mostly am.

You certainly don't need to defend this thread to me. It is my primary movie resource.

I don't consider anyone a movie snob here.

I'm trying to think of what my guiltiest pleasure movies would be. How about this: I really liked A Knight's Tale? :bag:

ETA: I can't get enough of the "drug" movies, I'm past the point in my life of consuming copious amounts, but it's nice to reflect once in a while. Maybe in another 10 years I'll be to the point where you are.
This. Same with gangster/mob, high school (when done right), and heist movies. I was actually just thinking today or yesterday how there are a handful of subgenres I enjoy 80% of the time or more, even if the movie is average or subpar, because it includes 1 of the aforementioned topics. I probably forgetting a couple more.
I have an embarrassing affection for high school movies, too. :bag: again

Oldboy is part of his "Revenge" trilogy...I recommend both

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - try to get the Fade to Black version if you can....

his earlier effort, Joint Security Area is worth a watch as well...

I have been intending to watch Mr & Lady Vengeance for quite some time but I have just not been able to gear myself up for what I know are going to be a couple of mentally exhausting hours.

For me, the two are tied. I love them both equally.

Date Night:

I am a boring married man, a lover of all things Tina Fey and think Mr. Carell has his moments so I figured I'd give this a try. I am sorry I did. It's worth a couple married chuckles at the beginning, but then spirals into a lame actiony-chase type movie that neither actor is suited for. It's below average and completely misuses two people who I think can be fairly funny. Maybe it's because they didn't have a role in the writing of the movie...

ETA: One of the few funny things in the movie was Mr. Franco as "Taste". He needs to do more comedy movies...

I have heard that Marky Mark has the funniest part in the movie. That's never a good thing.

I just saw this for the first time a few nights ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Different strokes for different folks indeed.

The scene(s) he was in were alright, but it was more to do with Tina's reaction to him than Marky himself. As I added late above, Franco was one of the funnier things for me.
