BTW WB Krista. I was wondering where you went. Seen Winter's Bone yet? Still the best I've seen this year.
My best non-FBG movie friend just e-mailed me yesterday that it is finally in wide release, which I read to mean "Why did you move from Chicago to some backwater, dummy?" Anyway, it re-sparked my desire to see it SOON.We were in Africa for three weeks, which accounted for a bit of my absence but allowed me to watch a bunch of movies. :(

You certainly don't need to defend this thread to me. It is my primary movie resource.

I don't consider anyone a movie snob here.
What he saidI'm trying to think of what my guiltiest pleasure movies would be. How about this: I really liked A Knight's Tale? :(
whoa.I'll call your Knight's Tale and raise you The Postman
You guys are such amateurs. I'll see those movies and raise you:Evil Dead

Flash Gordon

Re-Animator

Blood In, Blood Out: Bound By Honor
*cough* Battlefield Earth *cough*
Haven't seen it. It's so cheesy it's entertaining?

I'm kind of the same way about Excalibur. It's John Boorman and he's done some really good work over the years. But I saw this when I was 11 and deeply into D & D. It wasn't exactly influential but watching it makes me feel 11 years old again. Watching it now, as an adult, it is often cringe-worthy but I don't care. I'm pretty powerless to resist its charms. :lmao:
Really? I loved this movie. Saw it maybe 5 years ago and still enjoyed it, but perhaps it was the nostalgia (you and I are the same age apparently). What did you find to be cringe worthy? Excalibur also has some real star power that probably holds up better today than it did at the time (Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne).
The acting is pretty awful across the board. Patrick, Gabriel, and Liam are only minor offenders here because of their smallish roles. Nigel Terry is pretty bad though and that's a problem for someone playing Arthur. Nicol Williamson is great and really kind of steals the show. Mirren is fine in a minor role. I actually kind of like Paul Geoffrey as Percival. It looks good despite being pretty dated. The acting is just too hammy even though the roles lend themselves to that. Maybe I want it to be more true to the tales themselves and would have liked it to be longer?
I watched this again last week since it's one of my all time favorites.I still find it great.

I would put Seabiscuit at the top of my sports movies list. Seven Oscar nominations, but it was released in 2003 when LOTR was rewarded for the work done in the entire trilogy. Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper were outstanding and I think Seabiscuit is one of the most underrated dramas ever released. The racing scenes look and sound fantastic on blu-ray too.
I have never had any desire at all to see Seabiscuit but this post is changing my mind. And get prepared for some Krippling; I'm two months behind in here.
Not trying to be harsh here, but Seabiscuit is a total piece of ####.
Really?I think it's an entertaining movie. Not great but definitely enjoyable. It beats the heck out of most PT Anderson's depressing films.
I suppose it depends on what you want out of a movie. I don't like depressing movies any more than I like happy movies. But I *really* don't like movies where the happiness feels forced and rote.

Fanboys...wasnt expecting a great comedy, but I had been wanting to see this for like 3 years it seems when I first saw the trailer. None of the 4 main actors are very funny on their own, but they definitely worked as a ensemble. Overall, thought there were some good lines and it had enough laughs to keep me interested. I enjoy the original Star Wars movies as much as the next guy, maybe slightly less actually, but all the Star Wars-related humor was good as well. Im probably just comparing it to this movie because the 1 guy was also in it, but its in that Detroit Rock City ballpark as a comedy for me: not hilariously funny yet still lots of laughs, plenty of situational humor, and an above average storyline for a buddy comedy....7/10
Good movie. Nothing special, but fun and silly.

It's funny that a movie as deeply flawed as Excalibur is so great to a kid. This was my favorite movie when I was abou 11 years old. Interesting that the negative things an adult can notice are imperceptible to kids.

American Movie -

Been pimping this doc for a bit now. Decided to watch it again while I wait for my next shipment of movies in the mail. Love this movie. It's about a guy in WI trying to make a couple of low-budget movies. Great cast of characters that makes this movie funny as hell. I am laughing every time his buddy (Mike, I think?) is on screen - he's a combo of Silent Bob and Spiccoli.
:lmao: Big fan.
Me too. And :lmao: that anyone could hate Clerks.
I love this movie. One of the most inspiring movies I've ever seen, and a beautiful study of true friendship.

I don't know why it didn't sink in until now, but the movie had another big thing working against it for me - voice over. I was getting used to Liotta's narration and then his wife starting piping up. I know it might be silly, but for the most it will start ruining a movie for me when you tell me what's going on.
I've been on a one-woman crusade against voiceovers for years. Welcome! Nothing ruins a movie for me more easily.
I think it depends on the voiceover. Scorsese uses it well with Casino and Goodfellas.

I think it was Jdog that recommended it originally, but big thumbs up for "Ghost Writer" with Pierce Brosnan and Obi-Wan. Crisp little mystery/thriller that I really enjoyed about the ghost writer of the autobiography of a former Prime Minister (fictious, but meant to be Tony Blair).

Always good to find a little gem out there.

ETA: read that after I wrote it, and it's hard to imagine a story about a ghost writer to be all that gripping...but it is.
I know I already commented that I only found this movie OK, but it did have one of my favorite lines ever, delivered by  Tom Wilkinson

 great line.

Watched Following on Netflix instant last night. It's one of Christopher Nolan's early efforts.

Really good budget flick, IMO, full of Nolan quirks like fractured narrative, high suspense, near omniscient villains. Check it out.
Oooooo. Sweet. This is already way up high in my queue
I loved this movie when I saw it years ago, but wonder if it held up. Eagerly anticipating the jdogg review.
It's way up in the queue. Up next this week JCVD and the Ivanhoe miniseries.

I'm certain I would have felt differently had I seen it as a child. Kind of like The Jerk. That doesn't hold up well.
Please stop.
The Jerk, Caddyshack, Airplane!, etc. These are iconic movies from my childhood that I adore. But when I see them now they just aren't funny anymore.
You'll smoke a turd in Hell for that, blasphemer!
 All except Caddyshack, which has too many long scenes involving the kid and his girlfriend and her possible pregnancy.
Rodney Dangerfield is about as funny as an actor can get. And Ted Knight is awesome. But I don't think Chevy Chase is nearly as funny as he thinks he is.

I came back into the thread because I realized I was way behind again, and I had actually seen some good and not-so-good movies lately to report on. Most of them have been well-discussed already, including those I hated (A Serious Man, Date Night), those I was meh on (The Ghost Writer and The Lovely Bones, and having read the book I expected and understood the voiceover in the latter), and those I thought were great (Precious, which falls into the category of "great movies I kind of wish I hadn't seen", and The Hurt Locker, which I seem to appreciate much more than people in this thread).
I'm surprised you hated A Serious Man. I would have guessed that movie was squarely in your wheelhouse. I liked Hurt Locker more than most. It wasn't great, but it was unique and well acted. I'd never seen a character so addicted to such a dangerous job before, so that was interesting.

you are incorrect sir
It's unfortunate that the story of Seabiscuit is a Hollywood cliche, but it is. The movie executes well considering the tired plotline they were given, and Tobey did a fairly good job despite being typecast as Spiderman as the victim of his too-quick rise to fame. If you saw Seabiscuit before you saw Rocky, or that other boxing one, or that one with the football player, or that one with the football team, or that one with the basketball team, or that other one one with the guy who overcame incredible odds to take on the greatest thing that they'll ever get to do, or that other one with the other guy who overcame incredible odds to take on the greatest thing that he'd ever get to do, and so on - if this was really and truly the first and only inspirational sports movie you'd ever seen, MAYBE then I could understand liking it the best of the bunch.

I prefer "Stick It" with Missy Peregrym. "It's not called 'gymNICEstics!"

The Uninvited Interesting concept. Pretty OK acting. Twist @ end. better than Meh. 3/5

Couples Retreat I thought I'd absolutely hate it. Turns out I was....wrong. Cheezy, not well acted, I don't like the sex n the city couple....but it all came together. I actually laughed several times. Smiled @ the end. Enjoyed it. 3.5/5

i thought this was pretty okay. the cast is the key though. straithairn and banks you could count on to pull their weight. the others - namely the sisters - were surprisingly good. the younger one is doing the zach snyder flick "sucker punch". they both were pretty and interesting looking.

No, it's me. :lmao: :) I admitted to having an inexplicable fondness for high-school movies.

Red Road - I wanted to watch a "thriller" last night, and this was in my queue and available on netflix instant viewing. First, why is it that I can't watch Scottish films without turning on the subtitles? Does anyone else have this problem? Second, it is the farthest thing in the world from a thriller. Not a bad movie, but there is about 1-1/2 hours of very slow buildup for a "twist" that comes near the end. Anyway, it's about a woman whose job is to watch some CCTVs and call the police or security for anything bad going on. She sees a guy she recognizes and spends 90 minutes of movie time trying to implement a plan...for what? Can't tell you without ruining it. Oh, also contained the most explicit sex scene I've seen outside of pron, but don't get too excited about that unless you're a big fan of giant 70s-style ladyparts (hellllloooo, Christo). Not bad but not a thriller. 3/5

I haven't seen this one yet b/c I hold the original in such high regard. For those who don't know, it's based on A Tale Of Two Sisters. Along with Audition and The Orphanage, this is my favorite horror movie that I've seen in the last few years, and I highly suggest it for those who like the foreign horror movies. I am sure I'll get around to watching this version sooner or later though.

Yeah, I really don't get why you're so annoyed with voiceovers. I've heard the device described as "lazy storytelling," and I don't agree with that. I don't think it's lazy - and I don't think it's bulletproof. It's no more (and no less) lazy than any other myriad device.

Saw Bring It On probably 3 or 4 times in theaters. It was a very tolerable date movie for me. Always remember it because it's probably the only film in history where the main character shares my last name.
Three separate women? You playa.

So Im going through netflix last nite and want to watch a short film before bed, so I find Aftermath. Only 32 minutes long and I say that will work, so I decide to watch it.

I think maybe it's because when it's done (in a way I consider poorly- which is most of the time), I feel like the director is holding my hand during the movie. I don't need a voiceover telling me the character is walking into the bar to look for the man in black - I am watching the ####in' movie, and I can see that. I've been known to say that it's lazy filmmaking b/c I think it can be used as too much of a crutch. I just feel like you should be able to get the feeling you want and relay the messages you want 95% of the time through the performance of the actors and the shots you choose. If there is a VO rolling and it's telling me the exact thing the movie is telling me I get annoyed because I feel that the director is saying that the audience isn't smart enough to follow what's going on. I realize that is probably not their reason or intent, but it's why I think it's unneeded and it annoys me.

Navy Seals

Started watching this for free on Comcast last night. Even cheesier than I remember. Look how bold and brash Charlie Sheen is! Look at him jumping on a tow truck to steal his car back! This movie isn't just rife with bad acting, horrible script, and terrible music. Like, the SEAL team carries suppressed Heckler & Koch MP5s. Finally, something authentic in the movie. But the sound editing is so bad, they used the muzzle sounds from 10 different weapons.

I guess what I'm trying to say is Navy Seals doesn't just suck, it sucks on a sub-atomic level.
