Funny People

I didn't know what to make of this movie. I suppose it's a dark comedy, but there was too much slap stick and stupid voices by Sandler to be dark.

The ex-girl friend plot line dragged on way to long. I liked Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill's characters but I didn't really feel bad for the George Simmons character.

The "Yo Teach" portions were random and didn't add to plot at all.

Overall, I think they could have cut a good half hour out. I would have liked to have seen less ex-GF and more interaction between Rogan and the girl he had a crush on.

2/5
Not a bad movie. I think this suffers from the exact problem that Knocked Up suffered: the preachy final 1/3.

How was pre-Swingers Favreau any different? Gutter from PCU and D-Bob from Rudy were about the same type of character as he plays now. Except he is rich as ####. Favreau is probably one of the most powerful men in Hollywood that you would never expect.
He also puts himself in his own movies but you don't mind so much because he seems like the kind of guy who would help you move your couch.
Just caught this reference. Well played, sir.

I'm sure it has been mentioned earlier in this thread, but I finally saw There Will Be Blood. meh. DDL's performance was awesome, and I enjoyed the dynamic between him and his fake brother, but other than that, I didn't really enjoy it too much. just kept waiting for something interesting to happen. I didn't really like Paul Dano in this, and the score was getting on my nerves. I don't think I've ever heard a movie score that grated on me so much. it didn't seem to be in harmony with the movie, but rather seemed like it was trying to compete with the visuals for my attention. I actually found the music quite unnerving. overall, I'd give it about a 6.5. I'm glad I finally saw it, but I will never have the desire to watch it again.
Interesting. I can't argue with what you've written, but I loved the movie. I think the enjoyment (or not) of this movie goes to what you're looking for in a movie. I'm so tired of movies that try to manipulate me into feeling good, I like it when movies make the viewer uncomfortable. As for the soundtrack, this has been debated ad nauseam. However, while I appreciate the music's intentions, I agree that it clashes with the movie. I am a fan of the avant garde, but there were several moments where I don't think the composer was watching the scene he was scoring. The Radiohead dude (Jonny Greenwood) wrote the soundtrack, and that brings supporters to the table that might not otherwise speak up.

I really liked the movie as well. Though I thought it was kind of odd for the movie to end somewhat comically.

honestly, if not for the score, I would probably give the movie at least an 8. but I was constantly aware of the score, and how it didn't really serve the scene being shown, many times. for instance, there was a scene in which 2 guys were having a quiet conversation (can't remember which 2 guys). instead of a score that supported a scene like that, it sounded more like there was a monster outside who was going to break into the cabin at any moment.I really enjoyed DDL's performance, and I "got" the movie, and there were actually several scenes that I really liked. like the church baptism scene, and the scene where the oil well blows and catches on fire as HW goes deaf, and others. but overall, I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. and the ending didn't really work for me.

Thank you. I'm not a huge fan of the show but I love the Star Wars specials.

I dig. While I have some problems with the score, I'll defend it now just for fun: the seemingly random, disjointed score kind of emulates the psychotic, manic lead character.

I need to watch this again. As the final scenes left a bad taste in my mouth. The "I drink your milkshake" and throwing bowling balls around just seemed so over the top and comical. That's what sticks with me and afterwards and drops my ranking of the movie.

Last scene is kind of what sealed it for being one of my all time favorites.

btw- not that the score ruined the movie for me... I didn't like it anyways- but the score for Eyes Wide Shut was soooooo distracting/annoying to me (let's let our 2yo nephew bang out individual notes on the piano as loud as he can).

fwiw- I liked- not loved- the score for TWBB. Don't remember it getting into the way of my enjoyment of the movie.

Watching a movie and hanging out with the girls tonight. Unfortunately, they rented this new Karate Kid movie. Anyone know how bad it is? Should I keep my laptop on in the backround? I'm figuring the answer is yes.

Worst score of all time for me is The Perfect Storm. It's completely intrusive and takes away from the drama unfolding in the storm. I think pumping up the sounds of the storm would have been far more dramatic and immersive.

Juice

Watched this for the first time last night. Tupac was a very natural actor. Love the climax scene to "Just Kill a Man" by Cypress Hill. Soundtrack rocked. Kind of weird how fast everything went downhill, but that's my only real beef for the 90 minute run time. Very realistic for the early 90's I would say.

3.5/5
6/5, IMOawesome movie

This is England - Not bad. Never really felt a real attachment to the characters but it was an interesting storyline. It probably could have been a little longer to allow a little depth.

Didnt feel an attachment to the kid?! I find that hard to believe. Kid was excellent, as was Stephen Graham...Wouldnt call it great, but a solid 8/10....Toots soundtrack was :lmao: as well

Rumble Fish - This is Mickey Rourke's best work... I also want to say it is Coppola's but I'm not sure I want to open that can of worms. It was nice to see something by Coppola that was tightly wound and not bloated and stretched. Instantly one of my favorites. If you haven't seen it and you love cinema go watch it now.

I'd go with There Will Be Blood. In general PT Anderson picks poor soundtracks for his films which is the opposite of Quentin Tarantino who usually picks something that fits really well.

The girls really enjoyed it (ages 8 and 11) and to be honest, besides from being a tad too long, was quite watchable. 2.5/5.

Yeah, I don't know. I really liked the characters but just didn't feel like they were developed enough. Everything happened in such a short period of time. The kid went from seeming almost a bit of an outcast to being accepted by the group to jumping to the ex-con's side in the span of what seemed like a week. His new clothes still looked new. Great news though. The whole cast, minus Graham, have started a TV show that debuted this September called This is England '86 Definately going to be looking for it on DVD. :pickle:

Four Christmases- pretty much what you would expect, but it did have some laughs early on.

The Blind Side- again, just what you expect, but it was well done and I understand all the acclaim/praise it got.

Zach and Miri- pretty terrible.

The book was awesome. I read all of her books in Jr. high. By far the best of her series: Rumble Fish, The Outsiders, That Was Then This is Now, Tex.

Bill Cosby-Himself-Sheer comedy brilliance. I saw it as a jr high kid. Laughed then. Now as a teacher w/ kids of my own, PURE BRILLIANCE!!! 5/5

Monster Where to start. HOLY HELL! This was a sad depiction of her life. It was well acted and very believable. Dirty, gritty, sad. One of the very best movies I'll never watch again. 4/5

WTH was Alyson Hannigan thinking? I hope she got a ton of money for this. The first 10 minutes of her in a fat suit is :lmao:

speaking of nuts... really? I really didn't like this one. loved the opening party scene (was it the opening scene?) and it just went downhill continuously from there.

watched "cyrus" on the flight back from denver today. not as bad as i thought it would be. reilly is really hit or miss for me. seeing him in a lead role and able to carry the load was a pleasant surprise. marissa tomei needs to stop being the girlfriend in movies and move from being a character actress. she is too good for strictly small movies. jonah hall did well with a kind of understated role. good for him...

Grown to love this movie too. I you are in the majority though - there might be about 10 people on these boards who dig this movie.

Boogie Nights has a great soundtrack, but it's so Tarantino, it's practically an homage to Tarantino. So I'll throw that out. But I like the music in Magnolia a lot.

Eyes Wide Shut is almost universally hated. I'll research the critics' opinions some time. I'll wager there are some critics that defend the movie fairly well.

City Island- Pretty good comedy with Andy Garcia.

Edge of Darkness- I really liked this movie. Gibson does a good job of playing a guy that is about to lose his ####. Imagine that.

Brothers- Decent. Portman is amazingly hot.

Up In the Air- I'm a big Clooney fan and he doesn't disappoint.

The Ghost Writer- I think I may be in the minority here but thought it was ultra boring and done to death.

Date Night- Horrible. Longest 1:30 movie ever.

50 Dead Men Walking- Very good flick

Seven Days- Pretty powerful movie, not for everyone.

Lady Vengeance- Again, not for everyone but I would definitely recommend this movie and the trilogy as well.

Survival of the Dead- I'm a huge fan of the Zombie Genre but this one blew goats.

Reilly is one of the funniest people alive, IMO.this movie was good but not great.

Get Him to the Greek

I thought it was really funny but like so many comedies in the last few years it was a bit too long and couldn't keep the funny up through the end. I still enjoyed it and had quite a few laugh out loud moments.

I agree it's flawed, although I can't remember the last time I saw a flawless comedy. Office Space is one of the only recent comedies I've seen that is pitch perfect throughout. That said, Greek made me laugh out loud several times and that's enough for me to recommend it.

Yeah... himmm- I actually like Anderson's sound-tracks. BN, Magnolia... thought he did a great job selecting songs to go with the narrative.

Tonight I watched Peeping Tom.

While I really dug the concept of the movie, the execution was pretty boring. IMO really didn't do a good job building up any tension or capitalizing on the creepy nature of the movie and main character.

you mean the 1960 "peeping tom"? if so then context is key. it's kind of famous for what it was doing in its day. think of it as the little brother of "psycho".

Yes, that one. As I said I dug the concept and understand why it might have been famous back in the day, but it doesn't make it any better to watch. Maybe the better comparison is it's the little brother of Psycho who goofs around and never lives up to it's potential. Psycho is amazing in it's ability to keep the interest and tension throughout the movie, this movie didn't do any of that for me.

i didn't much care for it either but then i am not a huge fan of "psycho" either. i think in the context of its time, it succeeds pretty well in what it was trying to accomplish. it's more brian depalma than hitchcock.ETA - have you seen todd browning's "freaks"?
