Dead Heat

More trash than horror. Joe Piscopo is so awful at everything he does its hard not to jeer him with joy. Seems like he only has one liners and they are all equally painful. Treat Williams gained a little charisma over the years he doesn't have here. Highlight is Asian restaurant cousine coming alive and attacking them. This includes broiled ducks, stuffed hogs, chicken wings, and a beef cow corpse. Cool ending though.

Hoffa

Spectacular acting by Nicholas in a very unspectacular film. Storytelling completely sucked the last 1/3 of the film, unusually poor for a Mamet script. Held together as a whole by a couple of key scenes that Jack just dominates. Didn't know much about Hoffa before this, still don't know how much I actually know. Devito is in nearly every scene and sucks as a dramatic actor, let alone as Hoffa's muscle. Really wish they would have focused a tad more on John C. Reily's character.

i kind of like the movie but i can't figure out why beyond nicholson's performance and the character. it wants to be important and doesn't really get there. it lumbers along, i guess.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Great paranoia film. Very well directed, and interesting characters. Love how it is all through the viewpoints of just a couple of characters and how you have no idea of the scope of the epidemic. Modern films could take a lot of notes from this. One of Sutherland's better characters.

4.5/5

Bandslam - I really liked this movie, but I am very partial to HS movies. There was a lot of discussion / dialogue about bands that was pretty cool. It did have a 'geek gets the girl' type plot that is often overplayed, but I don't really get tired of it. At least it wasn't Cera this time. Lisa Kudrow played her part pretty well. I like HS movies, and I like bands / music... so I liked this film.

i agree that it works pretty damn well. i remember seeing it in the theater with my mom actually. have you ever seen abel ferrara's "body snatchers"? there's a great scene with megan tilly in it.

Caught The Others this weekend on Showtime- saw it when it first came out and liked it ok. Interesting watching it again knowing the story line. Thought it did a great job getting the scary mood right (albeit with the conceipt of having the kids be photosensitive, so lots of gloomy/dark shots) visually and through the pacing. good use of the soundtrack there too. I'm not sure whether Kidman was over the top or not, but either way, I thought she did the job well to convey the mood and I actually liked the performances from the child actors. Not amazing, but very well made and worth a halloween watch if you haven't seen it yet.

Gotta be honest, until last night the best version of this storyline I've seen was The Faculty. Josh Harnett

I'm intrigued though, loved a lot of the other early 90's trash films.

you might like it. abel ferrara has done some interesting work as a director - "king of new york", "bad lieutenant" and "the addiction" - over the years. "body snatchers" has a young gabrielle anwar in it and kind of works. tilly's scene is creepy fun.

Good movie. Along the same lines, Kevin Bacon made a very underrated thriller called Stir of Echoes that I recommend.

Unfortunatley came out the same year as Sixth Sense (if I remember right) and it got overshadowed by that movie. I think it's the better movie of the two, but a lot of people haven't seen Stir of Echoes.

The fingernail scene has always stuck with me, probably one of the most brutal single shots in horror history.

Just messing with you bro. But it WAS great acting on his part. Totally lost himself in that role.
I actually just went home for lunch and watched the actual clips of the senate hearings. Man, did Jack totally nail the real thing there. Word for word, just incredible. And boy did Hoffa have a set of balls on him going up against Kennedy. The bit on the dvd where the real Hoffa is questioned about his personal cash level and how he obtained it is absolute gold.ETA: Also decided that I really liked how this movie "showed" us Hoffa instead of "explained" Hoffa. We're never really given the motivation that led him to become the man he became, we just watch it unfold. Maybe bump it up to a 3.5/5.

I'll also add a :goodposting: . Anybody who hasn't seen this movie, see it, horror fan or not. Just a well done movie. Good dialogue, good story, good acting, good ending. Kevin Bacon does a great job with it.

I remember feeling kind of meh about SoE when we saw it in the theater. Then again, had a similar reaction to The Others... so maybe I owe it a rewatch.

Pretty much agree with this. I love Nicholson, but he didnt really get me all that interested in Hoffa or the movie. This felt like one of those movies that shouldve been a lot better but fell flat and Im not sure Ive ever been so bored watching a Nicholson movie

I think The Faculty is actually good enough where I wouldnt even call it a guilty pleasure, btu Im sure some would...Great cast top to bottom in that movie.ETA: Sniffing speed or whatever it was out of pens has got to be 1 of the sweetest antidotes of any movie

Leaves of Grass

All kinds of wasted potential here. Starts out great. Norton's pothead character is great. His straight guy character, not so much. Richard Dreyfus is ridiculously terrible, maybe even worse. Film goes absolutely nowhere and the 2nd half is terrible.

2.5/5 (I wanted to love this film)

Stickmen

Another great little indi-crime buddy film. Like Lock, Stock, and 2 Smoking Barrels only it's about an underground pool tournament in New Zealand instead of a poker game. Really enjoyed this.

Ip Man

Nothing revolutionary, but just a good all around martial arts flick. I'd recommended it if you are a fan of that genre.

Bummer. I thought it looked like it couldve been Norton's best performance since Fight Club...I'll still end up watching it at some point

Norton is a fantastic actor. But listening to his southern accent in the movie trailer gave me cancer.

There was one point where I was completely flabbergasted that Norton had seemingly forgotten how to act.The twin character stuff was very entertaining before the film went downhill. I laughed a lot the first 45 minutes and whoever made the film did know there stuff when it came to grow operations, which is something I can also appreciate. Both characters are on screen together a lot of the time in full view, which I'm sure had to take a ton of camera tricks and the actual film quality itself is pretty poor, probably to cover up some of the blue screen issues.

Ninja Assassin -

Obviously a popcorn action flick but I loved it. Forgot about this movie until I saw it this weekend.

watched "cyrus" on the flight back from denver today. not as bad as i thought it would be. reilly is really hit or miss for me. seeing him in a lead role and able to carry the load was a pleasant surprise. marissa tomei needs to stop being the girlfriend in movies and move from being a character actress. she is too good for strictly small movies. jonah hall did well with a kind of understated role. good for him...
I just watched this last night and i really liked it. It was good but not great. They had a lot of 'silent spaces' in the dialogue which always makes it feel more realistic to me. When they did speak it seemed much more realistic in that they somewhat stumbled through the dialogue... similar to what usually happens in real life. It definitely falls into the 'not a normal hollywood movie' category. Sometimes movies in this category turn out well... sometimes they flop. I thought this one was good.It ended somewhat 'open ended' which I thought was pretty cool. A lot of very strage akward moments that you didn't know exactly weather to laugh or just say WTF? I did laugh alot... but not in the traditional laugh out loud comedy way. It was a nice change of pace compared to the usual comedy's I watch.

Lifeforce

If you only see one 80's apocalyptic space vampire movie in your lifetime, make it this one. Some great model special effects from space and an overly-complex intriguing plot. This movie is pretty cool and has some decent creature effects.

Took me a little while to get into it, but once London started burning and everyone starts screaming in each other's faces, I was hooked.

Marky Mark in a hair metal band? Sweet! Alright. This movie is officially one of my guilty pleasures. Silly story, bad wigs, and some extremely corny writing. But it's a fitting love letter to 80s hair metal. There are thousands of reasons to hate this movie, but what can I say? It makes me smile.

I actually really like that song.

Half of Wahlberg movies are like this, the other half are actually good. Thats why I said awhile back hes one of the most consistently watchable actors for me. Out of his 24 movies through 2009, Max Payne and The Happening were his only swings and misses IMO (and The Happening is so bad its almost good/funny)...He's got plenty of well known movies, but he also got some smaller, underrated movies in his resume like The Yards, Traveller, and The Truth About Charlie.

I've said it before- I think he's truly awful. Consistently awful. He's done some good movies, fun movies- but I've never liked him in any of them.

Daybreakers could have been a lot worse. As it is, it wasn't too bad. Do like I did and go in knowing nothing about it.

this is pretty much my assessment of him. he has absolutely no range as an actor. when he's able to hit the right note for his role, it is the same note over and over again.

Agreed. In Invincible, he played the same low key character as always. Then when they show the clips of the real Pappale at the end, you can see he's actually an outgoing, boisterous guy.

yeah- I like him best in BN when he's "bad acting" the porn movies.... and the song demo is $$... but any time he's being called on to actually "act", not good.eta- I cringe saying this, but I think I'd put Keanu above Marky Mark as an actor.
