Okay. Let me amend my statement to say that 2001 is no fun to watch. Also, how is a movie being not fun to watch the equivalent to being bad film? There are tonnes of movies out there that aren't fun to watch but are outstanding.
Teenagers? For some reason I felt the need to click on a trailer for the remake of 21 jump street. Just curious who the hell this movie is for. Also, good for him for getting in shape, but the skinny Jonah hill is kinda creepy.
I think Im more creeped out by skinny Seth Rogen. Jonah Hill isnt exactly skinny yet, he's just not morbidly obese anymore. I think its creepier because he looks like he's 27 going on 48Good point. 2001 has an esoteric quality. The first Hulk movie seemed to have the same thing where the director was trying to convey something, but rather than being interesting it became boring. That Hulk movie too I've heard was very director driven.Having watched 2001: is making think about reading the book. I've read though the film is so different from the book that some consider them separate entities or concepts. I get the feeling that the book may have had more too it that didn't get into the movie due to Kubrick's uneconomical style. Kubrick tried to touch on some emotional or philosophical point but it's like it's so obvious to him that he doesn't realize that it isn't apparent to everyone else. I wonder if either the book had so much content that it was hard to make into a movie, or if Kubrick's style made it impossible to include more of the book.no, i didn't either but i do remember it feeling all rather tedious.Could be, it's been a while since I've seen A Clockwork Orange, so I can't compare stylistic similarities. I don't recall feeling that Eyes Wide Shut felt slow, but that's a more modern film.the 70's was the golden age of the director. studious gave directors a lot of leeway and most were pretty self-indulgent. they got to shoot on location. they got a more naturalized performance from the actors (thank you actor's studio!) but also did it with camera too. contrast that with the tightly control exerted by the studios for decades prior. the studio system was focused on getting people into the seats and keeping them happy. The French Connection I recall that had needless scenes of people just walking somewhere, it's like filler. I've felt the same way about other '60s & '70s movies like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Harold and Maude, The King of Comedy, Lenny, Apocalypse Now and Network. Can't recall if Serpico did.
I don't get the same impression from movies before the '60s like 12 Angry Men, To Kill a Mocking Bird, Street Car named Desire, On the Waterfront, Harvey, Citizen Cane, Hitchcock films and The Maltese Falcon to name a few.
I plan on watching more from this time, I'll see if it happens in those too. Dog Day Afternoon and Easy Rider are next.
). The final scene did feel a little sudden, but it shouldve ended around that point because of a couple great ones that preceded it. Really just a lot of likeable characters that were easy to connect or empathize with, a very good script, and a great performance from Paul Newman make this a movie I dont see how anyone could dislike...4.5/5A condemned man gets his last wish, right? I got my truck out back, how about you and me go out there and get ourselves naked and just see what happens
Willis: Sixty years old and still getting crushes on other men's wives. I would hope by the time I'm your age, I'm a little smarter than that.
Newman: Can't hurt to hope. You sure are off to a slow start.
Vaya con huevos, amigos!!

Haven't seen this in years, but I thoroughly enjoyed it when I saw it originally.Nobody's Fool....I expected Newman to be good, but Id probably put this in my top 5 favorite performances for him all time, and best post 70's performance by him. Really, I should try to start watching some of his lesser films because I cant say Ive ever seen him in a film I didnt like. I find loveable loser and/or small town films like this to be easy to enjoy, but this one felt like it had a little more character than most of them, likely thanks to Newman but also a great job by the supporting cast (had no idea Philip Seymour Hoffman was in this). Willis didnt over-Willis his character, and Melanie Griffith made me want to marry her and go to Hawaii with her (I dont remember her rack being this great in Something Wild). The final scene did feel a little sudden, but it shouldve ended around that point because of a couple great ones that preceded it. Started watching this for free on demand. Only 1/3 of the way in, but this is so bad it's practically a comedy. Worth a rental for you and your drunk / high friends.

I think that pic is a still from "Night Moves". She would have been about 16. IIRC there is a quick shot of her bare butt during a swimming scene. She even kind of looked like Reese Witherspoon here.
ETA: Just checked...there's a topless scene too. WTH. She HAD to be underage.Bad sci-fi x (Natasha Henstridge) + Michael Madsen =Species II

I couldn't finish The Beach. Wasn't a fan of Slumdog, either.Trainspotting:
I have come to the conclusion that while I appreciate what Boyle brings to the table, I never fully like his movies. This is one of the movies that I feel my college self missed the boat on. Probably would have liked it then, but did not dig this movie at all watching it tonight for the first time. Probably a step above The Beach for my least favorite of his movies.
Wow. Trainspotting is one of my all time favorites, might make my desert island list.Great story, interesting characters, good writing, Kelly MacDonald naked, awesome soundtrack...what's not to love?Trainspotting:

I will give you one. To me this movie just came across as thinking it's a lot cooler than it is. Didn't like any of the characters, and I have seen drug movies that are done a lot better than this one. Like I said, I think I am just about 10yrs too late to the party on this one. Remember every one of my friends in college raving about this one too. Probably a lot to do with the language and Scottish-isms. Just seems like Boyle wanted to have his cake and eat it too - have both a fun party movie, but still show the serious drug use. Honestly had trouble keeping my interest through the hole thing.Wow. I just saw this for the first time.I agree with all the accolades. It is a great movie. Jamie Lee Curtis was ridiculously hot (I can't believe she is a gray-haired mom who does yogurt commercials).A Fish Called Wanda
So I'm just over 20 years late to the party. Should have watched this a lot sooner, the title always bothered me. One of the all time greatest crime comedies. Kevin Kline is 10x better than he is in anything else.

There is one question I have. It's stuck in my head, and there is no polite way to phrase it. So here goes....
What did Kevin Kline's first crap look like after ingesting three dozen tropical fish?
Maybe how much your friends hyped it contributed to the disappointment. That's what happened for me with The Big Lebowski and Shrek. Several friends of mine said they thought of my sense of humor when watching those movies. I thought they were good but not to the extent that people seemed to be giving them. Same for me and same thing with Something About Mary. Might be once the surprise is gone, the amount of humor declines. Ricky Gervais talked about something like this. How most people can enjoy a song they love and get the same or more enjoyment each time they listen to it. But with jokes, once heard the response is lessened with each repetition. I think there might be some truth to it. Most of the movies I watch over and over are action or drama. The Holy Grail is a comedy that holds up to repeated viewings for me. But it could be it keeps my interest because I'm looking for those lines people like to quote. When this came out I loved it. Then I saw it a few years later and liked nothing but the Kline scenes. not boyle's best work - that would be "Shallow Grave" - but certainly a good film. i think it plays to the audience a little too much for my liking. also, as much as i like robert carlyle, he is far from the unholy terror that Begbie was in the novel. great soundtrack, some great scenes but it does not add up.I will give you one. beautiful looking film but it bored me to tears. The New World:
I didn't latch onto this movie like I have the others of Malick's. Felt that it was not quite as beautiful and the story wasn't as interesting. I could have done with a little less focus on the romance which didn't do much for me and more on the struggles of the colonists. If there was more balance I might not have started to feel the length of the movie as it was going past 2 hours.
I think I am going to take a break from Malick since I reached my 3 movie minimum for the director. Going to move on to John Ford and others, but will probably dip back to Malick to watch The Tree of Life in a few weeks. Feeling like 4 or 5 movies of this type in a week is really going to push it.
Kevin Kline was also really good in I Love You to Death.I just saw this for the first time.I agree with all the accolades. It is a great movie. Jamie Lee Curtis was ridiculously hot (I can't believe she is a gray-haired mom who does yogurt commercials).A Fish Called Wanda

Same here. Aniston was smoking.Horrible BossesWas looking forward to this. Wasn't impressed. Started strong, ended poorly. Aniston is hot though.
I loved it on 2nd viewing. First viewing (in a theater, even), it felt visually gratuitous and yeah... boring. The coda in England felt completely unnecessary. IIRC, I made the mistake of watching Thin Red Line right before seeing New World and the man with/vs nature themes felt overwrought with the double-viewing. I'm a huge fan of Malick, but I can't imagine KP doing three in a row the way he did.Oh- there was a great doc about cinematography that talked about Days of Heaven and how Malick did most of the shooting schedule during the "magic hours" at dusk and dawn when the light is practically edible. Made for a long, long shoot, but paid off in spades obviously.beautiful looking film but it bored me to tears. The New World:
