Predators - another example of a movie that makes it hard to decide whether I'm just getting too old for these kind of movies or that it just wasn't that good. Probably a combo of both. I can't buy Adrian Brody in a tough guy role. The only real intrigue is who was going to get whacked next but I didn't care enough about any of them that it made a difference. But there were a lot of bullets and explosions and great creatures and effects. Had it on my DVR for almost a year and needed some room so I finally got around to watching it. 2/5
Brody would be a better tough guy if he didn't always look like he was about to cry.
and attempt a Christian Bale/Batman snarly voice.

Watched Fargo again last night. Now THAT'S how you make a movie. You don't need a huge budget and you don't have to have the biggest stars in Holywood. Just give me a damn good story, fresh dialog, interesting characters and dark humor. As good a watch in 2011 as it was for me back in 1996.
Top Five All Time in my book.

I'm pretty sure that's just his face. Hence, he shouldn't be portraying a tough guy in a film.

I have to watch this again. I like most of the Coen Bros. stuff (even Ladykillers)but didn't like Fargo in my only viewing. The only other one I really hated was Intolerable Cruelty. How is Barton Fink?

It's a pretty polarizing film. So people call it genius. I call it selfindulgent and boring.

I thought Brody was fine as a tough guy in this series. Better/more believable as a tough guy than Glover.
Same. Its funny how almost everyone's first complaint on the movie is that they didnt buy Brody as a tough guy. Sure, it helps if youre 6'4 245lbs and ripped, but I didnt realize it was mandatory. Not to mention he was an assassin in the movie, not a bodyguard or something. Did people not buy Jean Reno in The Professional or Clive Owen in Bourne Identity as assassins as well?

I've never seen Barton Fink. Also never seen Intolerable Cruelty or Ladykillers. But I love Fargo.

Bartin Fink is worth watching just to see if you can figure out what the hell is going on. Goodman's portrayal of Satan is as interesting of a character as there has ever been. John Mahoney steals the show.

Those guys kept their cool under pressure, it doesn't work if you constantly look worried. Even if it is just your face.

Worried?ETA: he looks more like a real life mercenary than Arnold and many of the Hollywood "tough guys".

The thing about Barton Fink is that not everything in it contributes to the main narrative of "self indulgent uppity writer thinks he understands the common man, believing him to be a noble spirit, but in reality he knows nothing about him and his animalistic tendencies."The stuff with the writer (who is supposed to be Faulkner, I think) just shows the character that his craft isn't as noble and ennobling as he thinks it is. Kind of like how Mike Yanagita teaches Marge Gunderson about dishonesty. Then there's some insight into being Jewish in the 1930's and some other stuff just for mood setting.

It's a great movie, but it's no Miller's Crossing. I just watched that one again a couple weeks ago and ### #### that movie is perfect.

Trainspotting:

I have come to the conclusion that while I appreciate what Boyle brings to the table, I never fully like his movies. This is one of the movies that I feel my college self missed the boat on. Probably would have liked it then, but did not dig this movie at all watching it tonight for the first time. Probably a step above The Beach for my least favorite of his movies.
Wow. Trainspotting is one of my all time favorites, might make my desert island list.Great story, interesting characters, good writing, Kelly MacDonald naked, awesome soundtrack...what's not to love?
I will give you one. To me this movie just came across as thinking it's a lot cooler than it is. Didn't like any of the characters, and I have seen drug movies that are done a lot better than this one. Like I said, I think I am just about 10yrs too late to the party on this one. Remember every one of my friends in college raving about this one too. Probably a lot to do with the language and Scottish-isms. Just seems like Boyle wanted to have his cake and eat it too - have both a fun party movie, but still show the serious drug use. Honestly had trouble keeping my interest through the hole thing.
Maybe how much your friends hyped it contributed to the disappointment. That's what happened for me with The Big Lebowski and Shrek. Several friends of mine said they thought of my sense of humor when watching those movies. I thought they were good but not to the extent that people seemed to be giving them. All the hype made me more critical or cynical I think.
Hype might be part of it, but I think it's more about missing out on the experience. I got the feeling that this was a "90s" movie, and so many people have seen it since then, quote the movie, etc... becomes embedded in the culture more than other movies. People watching them for the first time 15 years later and miss out on all that. Unless the movie is great, there is something missed in that. Same thing I felt watching stuff like Caddyshack 20 years after the fact. Felt like an outsider - I can see how people like the movies, but I felt nothing while watching them. From the responses, it looks like I am in a very small minority that didn't dig the movie.
I get that for Caddyshack but I must have seen Trainspotting at least a dozen times but don't think I quote it very often, if ever. It's very memorable but not highly quotable.
Maybe quoting isn't the right way to put it either. Maybe I have it wrong, but Trainspotting seemed like one of "those" movies that you had to see at the time. Along with Pulp Fiction and a few others it was a movie that everybody in the dorms seemed to be watching and talking about. I worked at a poster shop on campus around that time and they were some of the most popular (along with Tarantino movie posters) that were being bought. Just feels like I missed something by not being a part of that and now having seen too many other Boyle movies.

Super 8:

Ended up disappointed in this one. Wished I hadn't heard anything about it before popping this in tonight. Kept hearing comparisons to 80s movies like E.T. and Goonies and how it was so refreshing to have that again. Really? To me it felt like War of the Worlds meets Battle: LA with splash of Close Encounters. Maybe started off centered around the kids, but it quickly turned into a typical loud action/sci-fi movie. Might have liked it more if they fleshed out the kids a little more, but they were happy to have them as one-note characters for the most part. Does the one kid with the fireworks have any dialogue that doesn't have to do with setting some off? Of course we have the Chunk of the group that has to stop in the middle of the action to steal a soda out of the fridge. Just had a hard time caring about any of them. Then we have the ending of the movie:

The alien could have made a spaceship to go home at any point, but he had to wait until a kid yelled at him to do so? Just terrible
IMO this was a cool concept, but wasn't executed very well. Thought it was slightly above average, but I am in no hurry to watch it again. 5/10

This was one of those movies that I watched for entertainment and enjoyed it like I was 12 years old again. I probably could be critical, but that never occurred to me.

For this one it was too hard to turn off the expectations. Really wish I had seen it the first week it came out. My review was negative - and after thinking about it I would probably bump it up a point. I know I didn't express it, but I did have fun with the movie. However: a) I didn't think it was that much different from other summer movies of the genre, and b) most importantly I don't think it delivered on the mood or mystery that it presented in the trailer. Probably will enjoy the movie more on second viewing, but as soon as I hit one early scene I had a gut feeling that I wasn't going to get that and it took my old ### out of the mood:

Was really getting into the movie until the seemingly 5min long Hollywood train explosion.

Super 8 was a bomb for me too, Karma. Major letdown.

ETA: And I saw it opening friday and had only seen the teaser trailer, I didn't know what to expect. I was hoping for some type of tie in with the Cloverfield monster.

Really liked this movie  Cool. I am just curious what people saw in this that was above and beyond other summer fare. Seems like people got ET and Goonies out of this when I got War of the Worlds and Cloverfield. I guess it hinges on how much you liked the kids?

It's a Michael Bay world now, KP.

Tower HeistFinancial revenge/heist caper with all-star cast follows a paint by numbers storyline and plot. Predictable results elevated somewhat by the solid cast. Stiller does good work, Tia Leone was very interesting, and Eddie Murphy still has a dose of charisma, but looks like he's been in the joint the last two decades. I liked it okay. 2.85/5 stars
Yeah, I would officially rate it "ok"
I was pretty entertained with this movie. Not a great flick, but decent enough. There were some weak points though. I enjoyed Casey Affleck's character a good amount... and also thought the scene where Murphy made the rest of the crew prove their worth in the mall was funny.

any movie with derek zoolander, axel foley, hawkeye pierce and ferris bueller ought be a hell of a lot funnier. it's not un-funny but i felt like they were squandering the considerable talents of pretty much every single actor involved. that said, tea leoni was funny and still looks damn good.

I thought the kids were arguably the best part so at least for me that was a big reason why I really liked it.Havent seen Cloverfield but I didnt get a WotW feel at all. WotW felt like people were running to stay alive, Super 8 felt more like trying to figure out what exactly was going on and for those who knew there was an alien, finding out more about that.

Fair point. It was not thoroughly funny and didn't have enough LOL moments, but there was enough humor sprinkled in for me. I felt like the movie was more focused on the story than getting big laughs. -But was the story ultimately good enough? For me, the story was fairly interesting, despite some weak points.

Staten Island..seems like this is 1 of those movies that goes by multiple names. The credits call it "Staten Island, New York", imbd has it as "Little New York", but it comes up as Staten Island on amazon. Anyhow, this was decent movie that really got upgraded thanks to the acting. Its one of those movies that are vignettes of multiple characters connections to each other, and although you can tell is was done on a budget, that isnt distracting. At first, I felt like they opened the movie with the most entertaining character (and arguably they did), but as it continued, I was definitely proved wrong. Vincent D'Onofrio at first struck me as overdoing his part, but when his character is totally fleshed out by the end - as a mob boss who is merely a guy that just wants more attention and notoriety - you realize how good of a job he did here. Ethan Hawke was very good as always and brings the most emotion to the movie. Despite both of these excellent performances, Seymour Cassel manages to steal the last 1/3 of the movie without even speaking a word as a deaf mute character who wraps the film up better than I imagined. Overall, this still isnt a great film, but the 3 lead actors definitely make it worth watching...6.5/10

Have had 3 out of the 6 beers in my house. Should I start Tree of Life?

edit to add warm Dos Equis in the garage from Halloween.

Scorcesse was on the Daily Show. Pretty funny. He has like a 10-year-old daughter which surprised me.

Driving home from set of "Hugo" the daughter tells Scorcesse he should find out what people like and make movies based off of that. Funny clip.

Fans of Blair Witch/Paranormal Activity will probably dig this one. Another 'found footage' movie. This one follows a Ghost Hunter-type show as they lock themselves inside an old asylum. I had a blast with this one. There are a couple good scares in it, and some really clever twists. Pretty impressed with this one considering the budget they were probably working with. One of the better new horror movies that I've watched lately. 7/10

Barney's Version:

Giamatti (sp?) is a natural for these types of movies. Also liked Dustin Hoffman in this as well, which is a surprise for me. A great choice for those looking for a more 'adult' drama/romance/comedy. Not perfect, but one of my favorite movies of the year so far. Sorry for poor write-up. 8/10

Movies I've seen the last couple weeks:

This movie is hilariously awful. Santa Clause horror flick. 90% RTTucker and Dale vs. Evil. Not quite what I was expecting but still very good. A fun and silly comedy. I've wanted to see this for awhile and am glad I finally got around to checking it out. 87% RT

Movies I've seen the last couple weeks:

Wow. That's a helluva superfecta.

Loved exports and tucker. Couldn't not drag myself to theater to see circus because of my clown aversion. Looking forward to the dvd release. Snowtown not in Austin yet, but definitely on my must see list.

I've been watching more foreign movies lately thanks to Netflix Instant Streaming. Here's a couple good ones:

Cronos: this is an inventive vampire film from Guillermo del Toro.

Terribly Happy: Danish film with a spooky atmosphere reminiscent of the Coen Brother's takes on noir. I really enjoyed this one.

Sin Nombre: Mexican movie that tells the stories of an Honduran family heading for the US border and a Mexican gang member fleeing his former gang. The male lead is charismatic, the story well told, and the cinematography is gorgeous.

Oldboy: Korean revenge flick reviewed elsewhere in this thread. Highly recommended.

Let the Right One In: Swedish vampire movie. The snowy setting and two child leads help give this an especially creepy feel.

 I've seen the last two but not the others; appreciate these recommendations.

 I've realized how far behind I am on the foreign movies as well. Added about 30 to the queue.

Harry Knowles reviews can be hit or miss but his review of Scorcesse's "Hugo" could not be more glowing. In all respects.

Will have to check this one out now.

Immortals

Pretty awesome. Does it owe a lot to 300? Sure. But it's not a ripoff. Fact is, 300's visuals were groundbreaking, and they'll influence action movies for years to come. Immortals is bloody good fun.

13 Assassins - 7.5/10

I probably would have liked it even more if I knew more about how the bushido code and the Shogunate worked.

But as it is, it's a pretty kick butt movie.

I enjoyed Limitless Cool storyline, loved the effects and how they differentiated the people when they were on and off the drug. Solid job by Cooper. Fun movie, definitely worth checking out. 3/5

My only gripe:

Why didn't he pay off the Russian sooner?

Our Idiot Brother: Meh. Even with the fantastic lineup of women in this movie, it was still pretty average. A couple really funny scenes and thats about it. Could have used a bunch more of the makeout scenes between Zooey Deschanel and Rashida Jones. First movie that I've found TJ Miller entertaining. 2.5/5

Hangover 2: Same as the first one. And by same I mean not nearly as good because it is pretty much identical with the element of surprise. Lets hope they don't try for a 3rd. 2.5/5
