Keep in mind, my parents are at an 'advance age' so horror is probably off the radar, and movies in the newer comedy style of being gross and having akward sexual jokes are probably off the radar too. They love cop, crime, and lawyer shows. Seriously, I think they watch so much of them that it caused my backlash against them. Maybe not a backlash so much... but more of... I seriously just got my fill. I would say that cop / lawyer movies are their preference.
Funny story, when I went to Cabin in the Woods opening day there were a couple in the front row that appeared to be in their 80's. Right as the lights dim, I heard the gentleman ask "What is this about?" and the wife answer "I don't know, it just came out today."I really, really, really wish I had a chance to ask them what they thought of the movie when it was done. Something tells me that very well have been their last trip to the theater.
Remember seeing Rules of Attraction 10 years ago or so. Elderly couple 70+ sat down in front of me. Could not for the life of me see how they could be up for this movie. They left about 20-30 minutes in after Dawson talked about raping/murdering a girl I think. Warped movie.
One of my all time favorites. Captured a Brett Easton Ellis novel perfectly. Especially when you think of the connection of Vanderbeek being Patrick Bateman's (American Psycho) little brother. That is who he is speaking with on the payphone. Glad I saw this in college so I learned what a dress to get ####ed party was.Speaking of American Pyscho, that and Very Bad Things have been the only two films I've seen where >30% of the people left before the end credits. Granted there were probably only a dozen people in each of the theaters. The couple in Cabin in the Woods did sit through the entire thing, but the guy was out peeing or puking in the hallway or something for at least half of it.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Thought it was the worst of the four. The 2nd one is ridiculous, but I'm a John Woo fan so it gets a bit of a pass. Big step down from the original and the third. The coolest set piece was used first, I kept waiting for something crazy to happen.

2/5
I'm beginning to wonder if you guys can watch "just for fun" movies.
Tons of them. I watched Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man twice last week on HBO Go. But I didn't think there was much fun to be had here. It was slow, boring, and not even really very clever at this point. The series took a major step forward with MI:3 and a big step back here. The Dubai building was cool and I know it was pretty "real" as far as major Hollywood stunts go, but it didn't entertain me very much. They still haven't topped the pressure trigger floor stunt from the first movie. PSH at least made a great villain in MI3.
:lmao:

Just watched "Everything Must Go" with WIll Farrell. Pretty good. Not exactly funny or dramatic, just kind of "there." I liked it though.
I like Ferrell more in those kind of roles than his straight comedy. Like in Stranger Than Fiction, he's great in dramatic comedy.
Aside from Anchorman, many of Ferrell's comedies are mediocre. Agree on the dramedy point. Ferrell is solid in Stranger Than Fiction.
Agreed. I really like Stranger than Fiction and Anchorman is one of my all time favorite comedies. Pretty much all of the other comedies where he is the featured guy (i.e. not Old School) are derivative of the previous one. They all have a few good moments but it gets old pretty quickly.
Wat?! Step Brothers is great, Talladega Nights isnt far behind it, and Elf is very good although a different type of comedy. Now he definitely has his share of mediocre movies and even clunkers (Land of the Lost, Semi-Pro), but he has more than just Anchorman, and thats also just sticking with your criteria of starring roles. Now I cant say I like him more in his dramedy roles than his comedic ones because I dont think he's done enough, but I do wish he did more movies in the vein of STF and EMGo, despite still needing to see the latter.

I'm afraid I have semi-high expectations - only because so many horror films are terrible. But I always try to temper those feelings, so I think I will like it.

C'mon now, you're missing out.
Those actors are some of my favorites. I just didn't get into it. I shut it off after the hospital scene where Ferrell isn't really injured. Does it get better?

Those films have some laughs but it's the same formula repeated over and over again. Ferrell playse the same clueless character which is funny for awhile but after 5-10 movies of the same thing it gets a little old.

The wife and I saw Tree of Life at an art house cimema - so the audience was mostly appropriate. But this theater always has about 10% filled with elderly people that won't get the movie. The moment the credits rolled, the wife said, "Get me out of here before someone says something stupid and ruins this movie for me."
wow. Are you guys going for the poster couple of ageism? Inappropriate for the audience? Their comments after the film may ruin the experience for you wife? wow.

Besides, I'm 45 - so I practically qualify as elderly.

In defense of the movie, I think comedy is really difficult to pull off.

I know I'm in the wrong place when I love every movie that is getting dumped on

Little baby Jesus is weeping somewhere.

As far a Get Him to The Greek. I really like this movie, got better after a second watch.

I love the awful songs :lmao:

My beans and mash

I shouldn't say this too loud, but I'm a big NASCAR fan.

Talladega Nights is to NASCAR as Billy Madison is to Golf.

as is

Tin Cup is to Golf as Days of Thunder is to NASCAR.

Talladega Nights is probably my favorite Will Ferrell Comedy.

"If you don't like Big Red, then #### you!"

Not to turn this into a tribute thread butWhen he is complaining about the sponsor on the windshield just cracks me up everytimeand thisThere is something I want to get off my chest. It's about that summer, when you went away to community college. I got an offer to do Playgirl Magazine, and I did it. I did a full spread for Playgirl Magazine. I mean spread man, I pulled my butt apart and stuff. I was totally nude. it was weird, I... I mean you probably didn't hear about it because I went under the name of Mike Honcho. But I just wanted you to know that. If you can hear me, if it got into your brain somehow. That I spread my buttcheeks as Mike Honcho.

I am not dogging Ferrell. He can be absolutely hysterical and I'm a big fan of his. I have seen all his films and will see any new ones he makes. But more often than not he opts to be a one note comic and just put the same character into a bunch of different situations. Is there any difference between his character in Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory, Semi-Pro or Step Brothers? That guy is funny, hysterical at times, and those films all have really funny moments but nothing worth 7 hours of film (obviously Hollywood thinks otherwise and I accept that I am in the minority on this). I'm just tired of that guy. I like his films where he shows something different like Stranger Than Fiction or even The Other Guys. I guess he has just gone to the well too often for my taste. Of course he'll still get my patronage based on the hope that I will see something new and I will settle for the 2-3 laughs I will get if, instead, he goes back to the well again.

If you're tired of the same old Ferrell shtick, I recommend this:Will Ferrell: You're Welcome, America: A Final Night with George W. Bush
Saw it. Good stuff, although is GW really much different than Ricky Bobby?
I know what you're saying, but Eddie Murphy and Clint Eastwood have made a lot of great movies playing the same guy.

What?? That's his funniest role.

I would never knock Clint Eastwood for playing the same guy but that's mostly because even at 82 years old he terrifies me.

I think Old School is the only time i've ever laughed at Ferrell
Not even his SNL bits?
Will had a lot of "meh" skits from having to carry the show as long as he did, a lot of them ended up as just "filler".But the Order of the Hand, Wake up and Smile skit with him, Cheri O'Teri, and David Alan Grier might be a top 5 skit of all time. I laughed so hard at that as a kid.

Speaking of skits, I've been watching The Whitest Kids You Know Season 5 on instant watch. Their material has become a bit more brash and gross, but there is a lot of good stuff here.

The Civil War.....on drugs.

I saw 60 Minutes interview Eastwood a few years ago, and they made the mistake of asking about his kids. Apparently, Eastood has fathered several children he doesn't know or seem to care about. Anyway, Eastwood looked at the interviewer and I swear, if he'd killed the guy, I wouldn't have been the least bit surprised.

The Whitest Kids U Know is hit or miss, but it's very clever. Mr. Show is probably my all time favorite sketch show after Monty Python.

Senna - Gonna echo the sentiments of pretty much everyone who posted about his documentary. It was very interesting and you certainly don't need any understanding of Formula One racing to appreciate the story. Definitely worth watching.

Rabbit Hole:

Thought this one was great. Story about a husband and wife dealing with the loss of their toddler. I thought it was great in bringing up the different ways people deal with it and react to it and how it can tear at families. Thought it had very good and realistic dialogue throughout. There was one scene in a supermarket with Kidman I thought was out of place, but that's about it. This would end up on my best of 2011 list and would recommend it. Similar in tone to In the Bedroom, but this one hit closer to home for me. Be prepared - as a father of a son the age they were dealing with, I was sobbing a couple times. 8/10.
Watched Rabbit Hole last night and I absolutely agree. I will add that the director, John Cameron Mitchell, did a tremendous job telling the story economically. In only 86 minutes he built interesting, fully fleshed characters with a powerful and difficult storyline without creating a feeling of being rushed in the least. Very good film from start to finish.

This reminded me of another doc about a motorcycle racer that i thought was really good: Troy's Story. Pretty sure it's on Netflix.

"We Bought The Zoo" the family and I checked out last night. 3 out of 5. Had a premise that was a bit of a stretch(what movies don't) but was a feelgood movie and even made our little one cry a bit. Nothing spectacular but mostly good for the family. One bad spot of language near the end. Not a big fan of Matt Damon but he did a good job in the role.

The premise was a bit of a stretch... but it was based on a true story. From wiki:
The fictional zoo in the film is called Rosemoor Wildlife Park and is situated in California. The real zoo is named Dartmoor Zoological Park, which is located in Devon, England. The original story was adapted for an American audience and the changes met with the approval of the author, Benjamin Mee.There are several differences between the movie storyline and what happened in the real world. For example, Benjamin's wife, Katherine, died after they had bought the zoo and had moved in. In the film, she died before. Also, instead of an escaping bear, as portrayed by the film, it was a jaguar called Sovereign that had escaped. additionally, Benjamin's children were much younger (aged four and six respectively) than the children in the film.In the film, the zoo was a lot easier to buy. In real life, the zoo took almost two years to buy. Benjamin's first offer to buy the zoo was rejected due to his lack of experience in the zoological world.
Looks like they didn't veer too far from the real story. At least they consluted with the guy that bought the zoo (Benujamin Mee) on the changes.

The Three Stooges - Woob-woob-woob, nyuk-nyuk-nyuk :lmao:
Let's see if I understand this right...You paid money...like American dollars...to go see this movie?
:lmao: And you liked it? Seriously? I'm intrigued now I think.
There isn't enough money in the world to make me watch this. I've seen Kate Upton in her outfit. That's the only part I needed to see.
Oh, an aristocrat.
