J. Edgar wasn't bad. Really good performance by DiCaprio. The back and forth timeline worked at times but took away from the movie at others. Too much jumping around. If you know a bit about Hoover you can follow along but with limited time they really had to gloss over a lot of his professional life to cover his personal life. I would have preferred it more the other way around but that's not what they were going for. They did a good job on DiCaprio to make him look old but not so much on his partner, Tolson. His makeup looked fake, imo. Not bad, not great. Wait for it on HBO. 2.5/5
I agree with your take.He was pretty much an SOB in the movie, I wondered if he was really that bad.

By all accounts, yes.

My theater is showing Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Thor consecutively followed by a showing of The Avengers on May 3rd for $40. Really tempted to do this. Yes, I am a comic book :nerd: .

If I sat my ### in a theater for that long I suspect I would develop a blood clot and die before The Avengers started.

Hulk/The Incredible Hulk:

Just like just about everybody else, I am gearing up a bit for The Avengers. I had only seen these once, and was interested in what they would be like back to back. My wish is that I could have combined the two movies. I really appreciate what Ang Lee was going for with the human drama of Hulk. Really about the circle of abuse passed on from father to son. Couple decent action scenes, but mostly it felt like Lee was a little out of his element here. I also think I read that most of the people were working on the Star Wars movies and that is probably the reason for the subpar graphics. Incredible Hulk is more of a streamlined action/comic movie, but I felt myself getting bored a bit more during it. Liked Norton in this role, but that's about as far as my interest went with the characters. Got tired of the chase and think the romance was played a little too much. I know I am in the minority, but if I had to pick one I would probably go with Ang Lee's version.
I don't know how a giant bunny rabbit ever made it past the writing stage.

Do they give you a break between films to go outside and get high?

:goodposting: Funny you posted this now because I finally saw Ang Lee's Hulk a few nights ago for the first time. While not a great film or one without flaws, Im surprised at all the backlash it got and how almost everyone seems to think the more recent version is significantly better. I agree Lee really succeeded with the human drama and character development, so much so Id probably say its the best in that facet among all the comic book movies besides Nolan's Batmans. The character development was very good and vastly better than the Norton version. I think Bana/Connelly had better chemistry and were more believable than Norton/Tyler. I liked what I believe was an original storyline of Bruce Banner's father actually being behind this research first and essentially using Bruce as a guinea pig. That said, the pacing is slow for stretches, and for a movie that is 2hrs20min long, the ending/villain development felt pretty rushed. I think the Norton version had better action scenes as well as CGI (although it had the advantage of being made 5 yrs later), and agree its definitely more in line with the majority of these comic movies as far as pace and action. As for the actors, I think both Bana and Norton were solid, with Norton maybe showing more vulnerability but Bana being slightly better overall. Sam Elliott I think was better than William Hurt. Jennifer Connelly was better than Liv Tyler. I think one thing that really helps the more recent version is that Tim Roth killed it as the villain and was better and more entertaining/interesting than Nolte. Nolte was good, but I dont think his character got the attention it deserved and was sort of mishandled here. You didnt see his character for long stretches at a time (one of my problems with the pacing), and goes along with what I said with him all of a sudden being the supervillain when there's like 20 minutes or less left in the movie.

Id give the Ang Lee version like a 3.4/5. Id have to watch the Norton version again to decide which I prefer but I thought both were good and each have their advantages over the other.

Get him to the Greek - liked it a lot better than I thought I would. Russel Brand is growing on me. 3.4/5
Big fan of this movie.
Agreed. I'm surprised it doesn't get more credit. I loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall and thought this was pretty solid too. Watching FSM made me like it more though i think. I was very surprised to see as many negative reviews as I did regardless-taking in the movie for what it was of course.

The Descendants - Howbout we just give Clooney the Best Actor Oscar he so desperately desires so he'll stop making end-of-the-year inner dissonance movies where he's charming in service to the life process. And they should change the "y" to an "i" in the director's name anymore. My dad - family occasions being the only thing that gets me in movie theaters anymore - nailed it: "Why did i just pay ten bucks to go to a wake for a stranger?!".
This is the best movie of the year? I don't get it. Slow, tense, depressing. Clooney's character was good, the rest were pretty standard, and I did not feel the side story of the family money and land was all that realistic. Agree with pissah on most points above. Then again, have I seen a better movie this year? I don't even know.
Movie really lacked laughs. Thought many of the scenes with the kids were just so forced. The alzheimer's bit with the daughter's friend was preposterous. The relationships with the kids were just odd. Not like Clooney and the wife were divorced and he lived apart from them. Guess he was absent but it just didn't add up to me. The kids were like strangers to him.Just a miserable movie with a lot of awkward scenes.

1.5 out of 4 stars.

Russel Brand is a guy that on the surface seems like a hack. But I heard him interviewed on Mark Mayron's WTF podcast, and he's very bright. I am a fan.

In the Land of Blood and Honey.

Somewhat interesting to learn a bit more about the conflict. A bit meandering and kind of plods along. Don't think the motivations of the lead actress were entirely communicated. But for a first effort I give Jolie a lot of credit. Movie has a wide scope and deals with difficult subject matter. This could have been a disaster instead it's a movie that was a solid effort that did have potential for more. Would definetly not shy away from seeing her next directorial pic.

2 out of 4 stars.

Brand was the only thing good about that movie. It wasn't that good. I'm tired of the fat guys "oh my gosh, what's happening to me" shctick. It's not funny anymore. And as I've said before, it isn't like there haven't been a lot of hilarious fat comedians. Jonah Hill isn't one of them. He was ok in Superbad, and has basically sucked in everything since. This movie wasn't very good.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Thought it was the worst of the four. The 2nd one is ridiculous, but I'm a John Woo fan so it gets a bit of a pass. Big step down from the original and the third. The coolest set piece was used first, I kept waiting for something crazy to happen.

I'm beginning to wonder if you guys can watch "just for fun" movies.

OK... so most of you know i have a 'different' tase in movies then most of the ffa. But... somehow (and I'm not exactly sure how) I convinced my parents that the ffa is the best resource for picking good movies. When they talk about a movie they saw, they say weather they liked it or not, and what they say is usually much more in line with the ffa.

So my mom starts asking me... what does footballguys think about this movie. I wonder of movie (X) is any good... you'll have to ask footballguys. Well, she asked me about 2 movies in particular: Hugo and The Atist. I dug through this thread and it seems quite a mixed bag out there on these movies. From what I read, this is what I interpreted... and I wanted to ask if you think this is accurate.

It seemed to me that no one really liked either story that much. People seemed to love the cinimatography and acting in Hugo... but most said the story was just meh. Similar for The Artist as well. People seemed to like the visuals, and the nod to silent film aspect, but as far as the story goes... meh. Which brings me to my next question: what would you recommend?

I scoured the ffa and unfortunately I didn't find many movies that had a consensus 'like'. The best examples I could come up with that most of the ffa liked were: The Guard, Win Win, and 50/50. Unfortunately my parents saw 50/50 already. My mom said she may have seen The Guard as well, but not sure. She has never heard of Win Win so I definitely recommended that.

Keep in mind, my parents are at an 'advance age' so horror is probably off the radar, and movies in the newer comedy style of being gross and having akward sexual jokes are probably off the radar too. They love cop, crime, and lawyer shows. Seriously, I think they watch so much of them that it caused my backlash against them. Maybe not a backlash so much... but more of... I seriously just got my fill. I would say that cop / lawyer movies are their preference.

To give you some idea of what my mom likes... probably her favorite show on tv right now is The Good Wife. Another thing that makes it tough is they have seen qute a few movies alread so it's hard to find one they haven't seen. They are no doubt going to watch WBAZ and I'm sure they will love it... but that's about all I got for them.

That might be all I watch. Just re-watched F&F Tokoyo Drift this weekend with my parents. My dad liked it because it follows the same plot of all the cowboy and war movies he grew up with. In fact, the last race was... asian dude in an asian car vs. american dude in an american car. America vs. Japan... sound familiar? AND WE KICKED THEIR ASSES AGAIN!!! GO USA!!!

I don't know. I'll ask. My dad definitely likes spy related movies like that. I will tell them about it. I think they would like aspect that is is based on a true story too.

Tons of them. I watched Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man twice last week on HBO Go. But I didn't think there was much fun to be had here. It was slow, boring, and not even really very clever at this point. The series took a major step forward with MI:3 and a big step back here. The Dubai building was cool and I know it was pretty "real" as far as major Hollywood stunts go, but it didn't entertain me very much. They still haven't topped the pressure trigger floor stunt from the first movie. PSH at least made a great villain in MI3.

Funny story, when I went to Cabin in the Woods opening day there were a couple in the front row that appeared to be in their 80's. Right as the lights dim, I heard the gentleman ask "What is this about?" and the wife answer "I don't know, it just came out today."I really, really, really wish I had a chance to ask them what they thought of the movie when it was done. Something tells me that very well have been their last trip to the theater.

Just watched "Everything Must Go" with WIll Farrell. Pretty good. Not exactly funny or dramatic, just kind of "there." I liked it though.

Are you the one that was pimping Jonah Hill as the best young actor or something? If that was you, :lmao: . If not, disregard.
The answer is somewhere in the middle: Jonah Hill is not Daniel Day Lewis, but he is a solid comic actor.

I like Ferrell more in those kind of roles than his straight comedy. Like in Stranger Than Fiction, he's great in dramatic comedy.

Many of the movies I mentioned are pretty mainstream. But the gem I beg everyone to see is Dear Frankie. Gerard Butler (before he started making ####ty Jennifer Aniston films) stars as a guy that is asked to pose as a deaf boy's estranged father. I know that sounds cliche, but trust me: it's not. It's a beautiful, touching movie.

Aside from Anchorman, many of Ferrell's comedies are mediocre. Agree on the dramedy point. Ferrell is solid in Stranger Than Fiction.

Agreed. I really like Stranger than Fiction and Anchorman is one of my all time favorite comedies. Pretty much all of the other comedies where he is the featured guy (i.e. not Old School) are derivative of the previous one. They all have a few good moments but it gets old pretty quickly.

It's much more tongue-in-cheek than actual horror. Cool monster effects over gross out torture type stuff. On a scary scale we are talking like Friday the 13th sequel type stuff.

I love Ferrell's comedies, but yeah, they are definitely mediocre as in... not groundbreaking or anything like that. They allow me to veg and chuckle a lot. I would also agree that he did branch out in Stranger Than Fiction and was very impressive in that movie.

Remember seeing Rules of Attraction 10 years ago or so. Elderly couple 70+ sat down in front of me. Could not for the life of me see how they could be up for this movie. They left about 20-30 minutes in after Dawson talked about raping/murdering a girl I think. Warped movie.

The wife and I saw Tree of Life at an art house cimema - so the audience was mostly appropriate. But this theater always has about 10% filled with elderly people that won't get the movie. The moment the credits rolled, the wife said, "Get me out of here before someone says something stupid and ruins this movie for me."
