Attack The Block....Fun movie, although I think high expectations hurt it a bit. Gets the ball rolling quick and a short running time prevents it from getting tired. Wouldve been helped by more action/violence for me (why couldnt these kids find a few more glocks and samurai swords??). While I found the slang and speech structure of the teens funny, I expected more direct humor overall. Maybe someone could clue me in on this, but I didnt understand why the one guy who they first visited with the female alien in his grow room or whatever was so hell bent on killing them, or at least the leader of the gang, especially with glow in the dark gorillas running rampant in the neighborhood. Thought how it was shot was pretty cool. Bonus points for being original. I thought it was going to be better but still enjoyed it....3/5

The Guard....Also had high expectations for this one, but it met them. Gleeson was fantastic, I dont know why he didnt get nominated for Best Actor. Cheadle was solid as usual, but more importantly thought the 2 of them were a perfect "odd couple" type pairing in this on numerous levels. Quick moving and interesting storyline, not many surprises until the somewhat twist ending which I thought was great. Excellent and funny dialogue, though this was one of those flicks where I think I only caught 80% of the dialogue so Im sure I missed some things. Quite a few memorable scenes (video room at the station, Gleeson held at gunpoint in his house, to name a couple). Only complaint was maybe it couldve used a little more of the criminals, especially Mark Strong....4.2/5

Killing Zoe....Been awhile since Ive seen this under the radar heist movie, but loved it as much as I remember, if not more. Dont recall thinking this specifically before, but I loved how this film is set up around Eric Stoltz's character, who somehow is almost a moral compass. Its really a 3 act downward spiral for him going from a euphoric night with call girl Zoe, to a whirlwind drug binge in the slums of Paris, to a hastily attempted bank robbery on Bastille Day that transpires over the last half of the film. Paralleling Stoltz's character story arc is his childhood friend and leader of the group, played by Jean-Hugues Anglade, whose conflicted character slowly descends into madness, willing to do whatever it takes to leave the bank rich. Its a great performance from him that really carries the film. Gritty, uncompromising, and disturbingly fun with a subtle ending that is more open to conversation and tragic than the viewer might realize at first....4.5/5

Martha Marcy May Marlene:

What a damn impressive movie for being a 1st film for the director and basically the same for the Olsen twins' younger sister. Without giving too much away, the movie is about Elizabeth Olsen getting away from a situation and reconnecting with her estranged sister. Got a Polanski vibe as the psychological tension builds up in the last half of the movie. This movie is a glaring omission from the Oscar nominations - I would say it's the best movie I've seen so far of the 2011 releases. I think the ending will put some off though. Highly recommended - 8.5/10
I love movies like this so I really dug it. Had me on the edge of my seat even though not much was really happening. Wonderfully acted, especially by Olsen ( :stalker: ). Not sure it was my favorite from last year but it's up there. I felt the ending was perfect.
Thanks again to this thread for recommending this. Probably never would have heard of it otherwise. It could have been tightened up a little as it got a little slow at one point but it didn't take away from what was a very good movie. Well acted all around. Olsen has a Maggie Gyllenhaal vibe to her and John Hawkes always is impressive. I didn't hate the ending and actually liked it more as I thought about. Solid movie, highly recommended. 3.5/5
I can see that - but younger and better looking.
Closer to Claire Forlani IMO. The chick from Meet Joe Black. Always thought she was a knockout.Loved the older sister character. So real. At her wits' end and blows up yet able to regroup and do what is best. Terrific depiction and hits close to home to anyone who has a troubled loved one.

Will definetly be paying attention to this director. Sean Durkin. Such a deft-hand. Truly impressive for a first time outing.

I'd say this movie accomplished most of what it set out to do. Underratted? I'd say no. Not enough drama in the third act to make it a movie I'd tell everyone to watch. Movie was kind of a slow drawl and the ambiguous ending left me wanting more. I would have preferred a violent-abrupt Coen Broes ending.
Lot of talent on display and definetly worth watching if you are a movie nut.

Olsen has a big future. Beautiful but not a barbie. Surprisingly not a skeleton like her sisters. I read into that she is smart one.

3 out of 4 stars.

 It's been a while since I've seen this movie, but it has always stuck with me I think because it gave me a different view of Paris(true or not)not always portrayed in movies.

Plus I like Julie Delpy naked.

Square Grouper

Documentary about weed smuggling in south Florida in 3 vignettes. Recommend it for anyone interested in 70s and 80s Florida history and old school drug smuggling. 4/5

Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles

Odd little documentary that I really liked. The movie is about tracking down the person who is dropping cryptic tiles around the US and South America and what their meaning is. The guys started noticing them around the Philadelphia area and took pictures. Upon researching them more, they realized how spread out they were. They are dropped all over - busy intersections, crosswalks, etc.. and the core message was usually:

toynbee idea

in movie 2001

resurrect dead

on planet jupiter

Would recommend this jem to any of the documentary fans out there. Never heard of it until the Film Vault guys were talking about it during a few podcasts.

Agree with that. Had a thing for her since Mallrats.

Wasteland:

Another fantastic documentary. I would say one of the best and most moving ones I have seen lately. Reminded me a bit of Born Into Brothels. I dare you to watch it and not take something away from it.

The Trip - Steve Coogan and some other dude go on a food tasting something or other in Northern England and spend most of the time doing impersenations of other people. As I understand it this is just an edit of a six episode television show which is said to be much funnier. It wouldn't be difficult to be much funnier than this. I got a couple chuckles out of it.

off redbox:

Immortals - Bleh. Takes a crap all over Greek mythology, pointless storyline. 1/5 for Freida Pinto and Isabelle Lucas.

some netflix streaming titles:

The Game - classic with Michael Douglas. Didn't like it as much as I remembered. 2.5/5.

Troll Hunter - Norwegian 'found footage' film about ... trolls. Campy fun I guess. 2.5/5.

Bunraku - what a mess. The visual style was interesting, but my goodness everything else was awful. 1.5/5.

I love comedy and I love food, but this left me flat. Only got about halfway thru before I bailed

I liked the series. Steve Coogan can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned.Watch Alan Partridge or Hamlet II, instead.

I'm not knocking Coogan just The Trip. Two dudes doing Michael Caine impersonations, albiet really good ones, and not much else for 1h 45m just gets old.

The Grey: Meh. Really didn't like anything to do with the wolves. Thought they were portrayed quite unrealistically and had some pretty terrible CGI. The interactions/dialogue between the survivors was good. Movie would have been better without the wolves and the ####### flashbacks. 2/5

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Or as I like to call it: Spaceballs II The Search for More Money

I don't know which is worse: 1) This horrible claptrap of a film 2) The fact that it made around $800 million net or 3) The fact that I sat through the whole thing. I get the whole suspending disbelief thing, I am more than happy to do that when the need arises but this film was pretty much insulting from start to finish. No suspense, no tension, no drama just one inexplicable moment of derring-do followed by another without a second thought towards writing an even remotely decent story around it. How does a film like this gross over a billion dollars? Are we really nothing more than a bunch of mindless mouth breathing primates satisfied with little more than a mindless visual feast? (rhetorical question) I can't imagine paying money to see something like this.

The Killing Fields A powerful, touching account of one man's stuggle to survive the horrors of the Khmer Rouge. 4/5
Powerful film. It's tragic that Haing Ngor, the actor who portrayed Dith Pran, was a survivor of the Khmer Rouge himself only to be killed in Los Angeles during a mugging in 1996.

The movie was cut down from the TV show, which was about 3 hours.

I rarely won't finish a movie. But on this one I finally took a stand. Lasted about 30 minutes. It was the scene where Depp is standing next to an open window and instead of escaping through it their is a whole elaborate chase throughout the room, hanging on chandeliers, only for him to finally escape their clutches and escape out that window. I know that's about par for all the movies but I finally cracked.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - wasn't too bad. Too long, took two viewings to get through. There's no real tension or twists, pretty straight forward scene after scene of action. A little more story and intrigue would have been nice. But some great action scenes as expected. 2/5

The Hunger Games- Wanted to like this better than I did, although I did still enjoy it. Just didn't seem to have the 'wow' factor I was expecting from all the hype. Did capture the book fairly accurately I thought. And Jennifer Lawrence

One thing I really liked is that the movie wasn't afraid of silence. I get so sick of movies that feel every scene needs music of some kind in it and THG just let scenes speak for themselves without some orchestra score or pop song going off in the background to let you know how you're supposed to feel. Hope more movies go this route but I doubt it'll catch on.

Chronicle: When the tagline is '3 teens get superpowers' my expectations plummet. Shockingly, it was actually pretty decent. I liked the first-hand video and that it stayed away from using shaky-cam like Blair Witch and Cloverfield. It didn't follow the typical love each other, hate each other, love each other plot. Had some good action and the finale scene was well done. Run-time is a tight 1:20. Could have used some more explanation behind their powers. 3.5/5

My cousin's movie is MUCH better in the theater in 3D and, even then, it sucks. The 3D is a great deal of the reason. It feels like they skipped the writing and went straight to the storyboarding. Nothing connects here except what's needed to make the scenes look cool - with Rob's musical-theater sense of action scenes as "numbers" complicating matters. I cant imagine how awful it must be on plain DVD. Hate it to say, but i think Rob's stilted picture of what happens between men & women - we knew he was gay when he was 4yo - really hurts his work, giving the "romance" a cartoonish unicornity that just dont play. Same thing hurt his previous picture, "Nine", exhibiting a complete misunderstanding of the inner struggle of a roué, kind of important when he's the central character.

I'm hoping his next, "Thin Man" - with Johnny Depp and a yet unchosen (i voted Scarlett Johansson, he replied "too young") Nora - is cartoonish enough on its own merits not to be affected this way.

At the risk of raising Chaka's ire, I'll say that I liked that movie the first time I saw it, when it was called Akira.

I am sure it was a visual feast in 3D. It was also a crappy movie. And I am pretty sure Jack Sparrow is gay, or at least he is in Rob's mind.

i felt like the film was at its best when it switches over to his experience. the bit where he talks about "year zero" always gives me chills.

It was decent. I kept waiting for it to slip into sucks, but it never really did. Worth watching.
I plan to watch it when it comes to DVD in a couple weeks. If for no other reason than it's got Wallace in it.Poor Wallace.

Akira is a top 5 anime film. Worth watching.
among anime genre, "akira" is at or near the head of the class. that said, anime is a pretty tired genre.
Yes to all of that.
Yes but Akira holds up and was the shniz long before anime became tired. And I wouldn't necessarily say anime has become stale but the ultra-violent, futuristic, sci-fi mecha stuff hasn't had much to offer for a long time. However there is still some very good stuff being made and as long as Studio Ghibil is producing features I like the prospects for anime.

I remember loving Robotech and Star Blazers as a teen. But at 45, I think I am a bit old for the genre.

I tried to revisit the American import of Robotech a few years ago. While I love giant robots fighting it was pretty much a hot mess story wise. I think we lost a lot in the translation. But there is still good anime out there. Spirited Away is probably one of the 10 best films of the past decade IMO.
