The Last Exorcism: 3/5

Plenty of freaky scenes w/o much (if any) CGI. The ending was kind of hokey but still pretty satisfying. Could have used some ugly scary demon faces.

Saw two films. Finally broke down and watched the latest Spiderman. It was OK. As my wife said we've seen it all before. I don't really think they nailed the Gwen Stacy character but I like that she was in there. I don't really care for the soap opera connection to Oscorp either. And lastly too many people know exactly who he is. I'll give it a meh. Next up was Prometheus. Lots of cool visuals but left with way more questions. A bit too cryptic but I guess that is how you get a sequel.

Secretary:

Co-worker recommended this one to me, and I ended up enjoying it. Spader is great as the sleazy dominating boss, and I thought Maggie G was great in it as well. 7/10.
I don;t remember, but was Spader's character actually "sleazy", or just a dominant (in the B/D relationship)?
Just dominant. Spader and Gyllenhall were two halves made whole by fulfilling each others pschyological needs maniifested through primal physical desire. It's similar to that yakuza leader in "Ichi the Killer" seeking out the ultimate in pain and finally finding his euphoria in the torment that leads to his death.
yeah, "sleazy" probably wasn't the best description for the character.

i liked "secretary" well enough. i will say this about the film: i have yet to meet a woman that doesn't think the movie is kind of "hot" on some level. both maggie and spader are pretty enough for it not to be threatening. it's not some ridiculous roger vadim, adrian lynne, "red shoe diaries" kind of film either.

The Tall Man:

Couple creepy spots, but not worth the watch. Thought the 'twist' about what was going on was pretty silly as well. Tons of better horror/thriller movies out there that you should be watching before this one. 4/10

Wife and I polished off season 1 of American Horror Story last night. I thought it got a bit better towards the end, but not sure how I feel about how the season wrapped up. I would give it a slightly better than average grade. Got repetitive, but still brought enough plot and twists to keep me interested. I will watch more, but I am not mad I couldn't watch more like I have been with other shows lately - Homeland, Game of Thrones, etc..

Buried

I give it a 8/10. Has 86% at Rotten Tomatoes (62% audience) and IGN gave it 10/10 FWIW. Movie plays in "real time" so 90 minutes for the viewer is also 90 minutes in the movie.

Thought Ryan Reynolds did a very good job and really liked the ending.

A man is caught in a desperate race against time in this claustrophobic thriller from director Rodrigo Cortés. Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is an American truck driver who has been contracted to work in Iraq, and while delivering a load of kitchen equipment as part of a humanitarian aid program, he's captured by insurgent guerrillas who intend to hold him hostage. Paul is struck unconscious, put into a coffin-like box, and buried, and when he comes to, all he has to help him get out is a lighter and a cell phone. Trapped underground with a limited supply of air, Paul frantically calls his family, his employer, and American military and political representatives, trying to remain calm as his chances of survival slip farther away with each passing minute. Featuring the voice talent of Robert Paterson, Stephen Tobolowsky, Samantha Mathis, and Erik Palladino, with all the action taking place within the underground box, Buried received its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I loved it...guess it's not for everybody but if you like dark humor and twisted people/situations you'll enjoy it.

Should be a movie I go back to but Maggie G. just doesn't do anything for me. You don't want a stunner in the role but give me just a bit more. Like a younger Rachel Weisz.

Planes, Trains, & Automobiles

Re-watching some of our favorite movies with my 9 year old. This movie's rated R, but just for that one sequence where Martin drops the F bomb 20 times in one rant. My son loved it, and of course, it's one of my favorite comedies.

Next up:

Money Python and the Holy Grail

 IMO Weisz is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. I thought Gigglyhall was well cast as somebody not too pretty, but pretty enough.

This Must Be the Place

Sean Penn vehicle that he owns and completely carries on his shoulders. Penn portrays a laconic, directionless former rock star sleep-walking though his life in an Irish mansion with his firefighter wide (Francis McDormand). The death of his estranged father (a holocaust survivor) leads him to America and a most unusual road trip to track down the Nazi guard who had tormented his father.

An unusual, slow, deliberate pacing that matches the mindset of the main character is not real accessible, but if you let it in and follow along with Penn in this understated, beautiful performance, its quite a satisfying story.

"moonrise kingdom" anyone?

saw it last night and liked it. it's anderson being true to himself, which probably doesn't help him win over any new fans. it drags in a number of places but always seems to be spot on with murray's screen time (and schwartzman). mcdormand and willis just don't fit here while swinton's tiny role is tailor made for her. the kids were hit-and-miss much of the time. this film didn't seem to be trying quite so hard and isn't as "precious" moment to moment. i was amused but not in love. "rushmore" still is his most mature and fully realized film to date.
Local art house theaters showed previews of this every time I attended the last couple months ( alot). I picture it as I think you describe it. Clever and entertaining, but sluggish and non-compelling.
I can only take so much of people crisscrossing an island not saying much.I nearly laughed once.

"Was he a good dog?"

"Who's to say?"

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises 3/5.

Entertainment, but overly drawn out. Big effects.

SkyFall - 007 2.5/5.

Nothing much special, but its what you kind of expect. A little to "modernized".

Twilight Saga Part 2 - Breaking Dawn 4/5

I'm no fan of Twilight (wife is) but this is a somewhat solid flick. Massively epic dream sequence. I can see how fans would really dig this episode. It got me to ask questions repeatedly (as I dont know the entire story).

Looper 3.5/5.

Really good story and acting. Film is just "good" overall. Fun, but it slows down a bit too much.

Hotel Transylvania 3.5/5.

A very good Halloween offering. Some solid laughs and nice to see a flip on the typical script of bad/good.

ParaNorman 3.5/5.

And yet another enjoyable Halloween type of film. Plenty of laughs from the audience. Cute and happy, despite the subject matter (undead/dead).

Lol.Just finished watching Sinister. Was doing some work while I was watching it on my second monitor, I managed to somehow unplug my headset in the middle of a jumpscare and scared the #### out of myself.

Overall the movie was pretty meh, reminded me a lot of Amityville Horror.

Yet another example of why BST is on ignore.

Anyway...

Finally saw John Carpenter's The Thing. It's great, especially the practical visual effects.

caught Argo in my annual movies-with-dad night. solid - the first 15 minutes' capture of the awful Tehran moment we obsessed about for over a yr was worth a ticket on its own. fine storytelling in the Sydney Pollack tradition, only detracted by Affleck's inexplicably copious offer of shots of him looking excellent as a 70s guy and an artificially-close climax. 4.11/5

finally saw The Artist - easily the worst Best Picture i've ever seen. if youre gonna make a paean to silent films, shouldnt it at least be one that silent-film people might have liked? havent waited longer for a reveal that never came since Zelda Wasserstein. 1.1/5

I liked it. Lots of interesting camera work. The theme of hubris gets its comeuppance only to be redeemed by that which caused it is well played. And Bérénice Bejo is a dish.

Ted: If you've seen the trailers, you've already laughed as much as you will. Not terrible but certainly spoiled by the trailers. 2.5/5
I'd give it a 6.5/10...maybe a little high but there's been a dearth of comedies this year. I didn't laugh a whole lot but it was entertaining enough.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green - 6/10

If schmaltzy Spielberg-esque movies are your thing, this is the movie for you.

Why would his posts cause that?

Skyfall - I think this may be my favorite of the Daniel Craig Bond films. It is a little try-hard in going for a retro feel (from the clothing to the somewhat disappointing lack of gadgets from Q) and Bardem is a little tough to wrap your mind around initially (and I am not sure we needed to see Craig shirtless 116 times in a 143 minute movie). But overall this is a well scripted and acted Bond film. It is in many ways toned down and more subtle while still being very action packed.

Significantly it is the most human Bond story that I think I have seen and, to that end, uncharacteristically has nothing to do with saving the world while still preserving the quality of villain that is capable of reaching those heights.

I was very skeptical as I thought the first two Craig Bond films were mostly meh but I think this one is worth seeing.

I really dug this movie as well (heh). Definitely something worth watching. I'd probably give it a solid 8.5/10 as well.

Saw this with the wife recently as well. She drags me to all of them, and I thought the first few were tolerable enough. The 4th one was so hideous that I was really dreading this one, but it wasn't that bad. There was some really cheesy acting (even for Twilight) throughout the first hour but the last 45 minutes was pretty fun. My wife told me how the end goes in the book and it looks like they completely changed it for the better in the movie.By the way, you've got a pretty big spoiler in your description so I'd take that out.

they have been talking about how Bond is grittier, less superspy for years now (back to the timothy dalton years). brosnan touches on it - in a cursory way - with an early scene in "die another day" too. "Skyfall" certainly does it better, in a more thoughtful way. It's not a bad Bond film at all but it is a bit jumbled. It's trying to explore Bond and his meaning while also enjoying the obligatory supervillian nonsense. it's less successful as a result but still does some nice things. it has some nice performances but it doesn't hold up well if you think too much about it. the plotting overall is not exactly lean.

Life is grittier in HD. I don't even notice anymore.I agree there there were a few plot conveniences (not quite McGuffins) but I thought this story was much tighter than either Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace.

Yeah sucks for people to have a differing opinion and taste. anyway...
I appreciate differing taste, I just assumed that a 4/5 rating for sparkly vampires was a joke, right?
Kind of. I was relating a lot for the people around me and how much they enjoyed themselves.Gives a run with Argo for the best response from the crowd. But don't get too stuck on a Twilight review, Im sure we can all agree its over critiqued - both ways.

Magic Mike.

Yeah a lot of dude. So does all of our beloved porno fellas. Not a good movie. But fascinating to see Tatum and McConaughey act this stuff out. Olivia Munn  .

Story doesn't amount to much.

I'll check any Soderbergh pic out. Not missing anything with this one.

1.5/4 stars.

Will say it's the best of the Twilight movies by far. :bag: Minimal Ashley Greene was a bummer.

So I saw Expendables 2 and Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter last night. I found the Expendables very enjoyable and exactly what I expected. Another good throw back action flick with everyone in it. Really enjoyed this from start to finish. As for Abe I liked it but not quite as much as Expendables. I thought they did a good job with it and the use of minimal silliness was nice. I was hoping they wouldn't camp it up too much and they didn't. I thought the guy playing Abe really looked the part and played it well. I would recommend either. My wife liked them both equally.

I don't know exactly why, but it's what broke the GMTAN thread and deleting them fixed it. When he was banned and had all his posts deleted, it screwed up threads he had posted in often.

. Really well done monster movie with better CGI than I was expecting. 4.5/5.0

Another Earth - 3.5/5

I can understand the mixed reviews. But it worked for me. I'm always on the lookout for low budget gems. This was an interesting concept and well executed. The ending was clever. It left a lot to the imagination but provided sufficient closure.

I thought it was great. I have a few complaints but overall thought it was quite enjoyable. Insanely dark comedy filled with a great combination of stupid, greedy, psychotic, naive, white trash characters. I disliked all the characters by the end but rooting against folks can be a lot of fun. Almost all of them were loathsome and there were few - if any - redeeming qualities about any of the family members. But it all fit for me as aside from Joe they all seemed one step (if that) above mental ######ation. Trailer trash has never been so entertaining. And McConahauy (sp?) made an excellent villain. Watching him change from a methodical killer into flashing his inner insanity was riveting. Wish they had played the change up a bit more and he received even more screen time. Felt like the movie could have thrown a bit more effort into that and done away with a few other scenes but not every flick is perfect. RT and popcorn score were similar with a high 70's. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

Saw two movies in the theater this month...

Skyfall

Overall, I liked it a lot. Very entertaining. Not sure I saw the point in part of Bardem's character makeup, though. Seemed unnecessary.

---

Seven Psychopaths

Yuck. A couple of laughs and a lot of heavy-handed melodrama. Terrible.

"super 8" last night. fun watching abrams ape spielberg for a movie. the kids were pretty good too. kyle chandler needs a comedy in the worst way.
