Silver Lining Playbook

Dramedy about manic depression and dealing with those dealing with it. A smart, funny movie that did a good job of acknowledging the issues of the disorder without sugar-coating it, minimizing it, or using it for cheap humor. Well done on those fronts and above that a semi-smart romcom/dramedy psychofusion.

Blood Simple:

Finally got around to watching this one, and I was really impressed. Not their best movie, but still great for a debut. Their comedies are usually a big whiff for me, so by default Blood Simple would be in the top 3rd of their movies for me.

Moonrise Kingdom:

I am 50/50 on Wes Anderson so I thought I'd give it a shot, and I think I am just done trying. Beautifully shot and kinda 'cute' but overall I wasn't enjoying my experience. I think I liked it slightly better than his last two films, but that is not saying a lot.

I know I've watched more movies, but can't seem to remember what they were. I also watched Season 2 of Walking Dead, and liked it a bit more than Season 1 although they still need to figure out how to introduce more people. Also polished off Season 8 of The Office and was pleasantly surprised - I think I liked it a bit more overall than the last two seasons.

The Lorax - 0/10

Anti-business, environmental claptrap. Never has a movie made a bigger (and worse) about face than this. I was shocked.

i saw "Argo" last night in the theater. curiously effective and tense despite a very spare script and character development. you know what happens but it still kind of works.

Twilight Saga Part 2 - Breaking Dawn 4/5
Saw this with the wife recently as well. She drags me to all of them, and I thought the first few were tolerable enough. The 4th one was so hideous that I was really dreading this one, but it wasn't that bad. There was some really cheesy acting (even for Twilight) throughout the first hour but the last 45 minutes was pretty fun. My wife told me how the end goes in the book and it looks like they completely changed it for the better in the movie.By the way, you've got a pretty big spoiler in your description so I'd take that out.
What would you give it freebagel?2-3? stars?
I usually rate out of 10 and I would probably give it about a 5/10.

having read the book pretty recently with my 2 1/2 year old, it's clearly anti-business. i think the any environmental message is coached in more anti-consumption though. it's pretty obvious like that.it's only "meh" to read aloud. i really like marvin k. mooney, will you please go now? to read to my boy.

Finally saw The Orphanage. Nicely made film. Good tension & scares.
Awesome movie. The last two times I watched it, it was in my "perfect 10" category. I'm wondering if I'll still think so the third time.
I put this movie in my Netflix queue a while ago, probably based on these comments. Finally watched it over the long weekend. Didn't even know going in that it was subtitled, but that didn't really bother me. Was a good movie.

It was terrible but not because of its agenda.
It was terrible in addition to its agenda. It's certainly no Fox In Sox.
Wasn't the outrage about The Lorax the fact that it had dozens of product placements/tie-ins despite the book's anti-consumerism and pro-environment agenda? There was even SUV commercials with Lorax characters.

I didn't like Rushmore at all but Moonrise Kingdom was very good. The kids were somewhat likable as opposed to the usual obnoxious people Wes Anderson has in his films.

Love Wes, but he tends to stock his films with people that are quirky to the point of being annoying. I think these kids brought a very human element to Anderson's film.

I haven't watched it yet but it was the commercialization that I read about that made me not want to see it. As far as the anti-business, environmental claptrap goes, the book isn't really anti-business but anti-greed.

Wild Bill

British drama about a former "nutter" ex-convict re-introducing himself to his 2 youthful boys. It's at times touching, humorous, and suspenseful, all while maintaining the seediness that's become common with British crime films. What the film lacks in original story it makes up for with above average acting performances, particularly from Charlie Creed-Miles as Bill. The last 15 odd minutes of the film was particularly well done. I'd probably rank it somewhere in my top 10 films of 2012, so far.

It's also the directorial debut of Dexter Fletcher, who was the cook in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and was in Band of Brothers.

In my proudest movie "Aha!" moment of all time, I also picked him out as a child actor in The Elephant Man.

QUEEN OF VERSAILLES

Documentary that chronicles the rise and fall of the Siegels, who own one of the largest timeshare operations in the world and were in the midst of building the country's largest home (90,000sf) when the bottom fell out in 2008. Watching them struggle as they reduce their household staff from 30 to4 and have to rent out their rolls to a local limo driver. Completely fascinating look at the this couple and their 13 kids as they own, then lose it all. Not warm or especially fun, but quite satisfying in many ways.

4.18/ 5 stars
It's hard to watch a film where I despise the main characters.I'll pass on this one.
It's hard to despise the main characters too much as the film does a wonderful job of humanizing them; and really I didn't find myself despising the wife at all, she comes across as a kind woman whose only crime is her ignorance. The husband is quite despicable though, but that just allows for some of the most delicious schadenfreude you'll ever see to be served. And the incredible amount of irony that is displayed as largest timeshare mogul in the USA blames greedy bankers for tempting him to take out loans that he couldn't repay in a staunch straight face is both astounding and incredibly satisfying. The only sad thing is that there's a lot of young children involved in that mess of a family.

Damn impressive. Story was solid and well fleshed out from all points of interest. Plenty of action that was all pretty much believable and yet a visual spectacle. Way better then Skyfall. The acting and characters are very well done. Definitely lives up to its namesake... and I should have ignored the critique's on this one.

Two spy-thriller type movies that I have just seen both in recent days. Thus the comparison.

I liked the Bourne Legacy - despite poor reviews. But I think Skyfall was better.

V/H/S:

I am usually a sucker for the 'found footage movies, but this thing was horrible. Somebody hires a few dumb guys to break into a house and steal a VHS tape. While there, they start watching a few. Thought all the segments were pretty lame, and the anthology style for this type of movie really defeats the purpose. Usually what makes the found footage good is the slow build up, and the rawness/realism of the movie. This movie had no build up because we are only with each group of people for 15mins or so, and there is way too much dependence on f/x and gore. Long story short, this was one of the worst movies I've tried to watch in the past year or so. 3/10.

Harold and Maude - In a desert island situation this movie would definitely make my top 5 comedy list and possibly make my top 5 overall films. It is so intelligently written and thoughtful that it holds up to scrutiny even after 40 years. I don't know much about the other films by the five actresses who were nominated for Oscars (except for Fonda in Klute, meh) but I am continually shocked that Ruth Gordon wasn't even nominated. She is brilliant in this role and at 75 years old she is positively radiant and brings so much energy and life to her role that even the hardest heart would have to be captivated by her. When contrasted against Bud Cort who capably portrays the goth archetype with a straight faced melancholy and a subtle humor I can't imagine anyone not being charmed by the brilliance of this classic dramedy.

And bonus points for the best movie car ever.

10 out of 1 stars.

Not sure where else to post this. It's not worth it's own thread, but indy cinema fans might enjoy this:

Mark Maron's excellent WTF Podcast interviewed Todd Solondz recently.

He's every bit as odd as his movies. Good stuff.

it is usually flattering when someone compares you a movie actor. when i was in my high school years, i got a lot of "you look like the guy 'harold and maude'". i didn't see the film until later in college and i wasn't happy. now, in retrospect, i am rather okay with it.

There was something about this movie that bugged me in HS when I first watched it. I think it was mostly that I watched it because a series of fairly culturally unintersting people seemed to love it, like it gave them some kind of street quirky cred or something. Or I'm drunk. But #### this movie.

I can see why this movie is iconic. But perhaps the context in which you see it in makes all the difference? Maybe I'd love it if I had seen it as a teen.

I don't think I am the only one with this problem but the "White Corner" seems to be malfunctioning and now only takes me to the last post in the thread. Is there a fix or are we screwed?

Moonrise Kingdom:

I am 50/50 on Wes Anderson so I thought I'd give it a shot, and I think I am just done trying. Beautifully shot and kinda 'cute' but overall I wasn't enjoying my experience. I think I liked it slightly better than his last two films, but that is not saying a lot.
Loved it
I never know what to expect going into a Wes Anderson film. It's really dependant on my mood but I generally like them, my favorite being Steve Zissou. I really liked Moonrise Kingdom. It was a bit uncomfortable at times though with the girl being just a kid. The story was very touching though.

Yeah, there's a scene with the kids in underwear, and I felt weird, too.

A little bit, but yes, overall the story was touching and funny. My favorite of his is still The Royal Tenenbaums. It's in my top 3 films.

The 5th Element

I liked it, but don't think I'd re-watch it. Quirky, goofy movie. Reminded me of the RPG Tales From the Floating Vagabond.

weird... down there?

10 out of 1 stars.
it is usually flattering when someone compares you a movie actor. when i was in my high school years, i got a lot of "you look like the guy 'harold and maude'". i didn't see the film until later in college and i wasn't happy. now, in retrospect, i am rather okay with it.
Not a fan of this movie
Dude
There was something about this movie that bugged me in HS when I first watched it. I think it was mostly that I watched it because a series of fairly culturally unintersting people seemed to love it, like it gave them some kind of street quirky cred or something. Or I'm drunk. But #### this movie.
I can see why this movie is iconic. But perhaps the context in which you see it in makes all the difference? Maybe I'd love it if I had seen it as a teen.
I've never seen it but I read the synopsis (as well as a bunch of spoilers) and it doesn't seem like a comedy to me. I'm going to give it a try but I'm keeping my expectations low based on what I've read.

I can't believe this trash has a 5.8 on IMDB. You're being generous with the 3/10.
